A cute little restaurant, nestled in the heart of downtown Culpeper. Stopped here on a whim on my way to an event and had a really nice time. We sat at the bar for a quick meal and the servers were all friendly and attentive. I opted for the chicken bacon ranch tacos based on a few other reviews and they were pretty good. My husband and I had lunch here today. I had the chicken bacon ranch tacos and they were amazing. My husband had the fish and chips. The food was good and the service was outstanding! The waiter was great. The reason for the 3 stars is because the place is filthy. If you don't see it look up at the ceiling fans. They are caked with dust as are the rails along the booths. If I had noticed before I ordered I would have left. I'll come back after a thorough cleaning. read more

This place did NOT disappoint. We experienced an incredible welcome from the staff, and they were exceptionally accommodating to our child. Our server provided him with your standard placemat & crayons, and then a sheet of super hero stickers. She also really interacted with him every time she visited our table, something I truly appreciate. To start off, my wife ordered a margarita flight, economically priced at $12. She gave them two thumbs up. I ordered the Cajun Shrimp Pasta, which was rich, spicy, and overall phenomenal. My wife ordered a vegetarian style mushroom Cajun Shrimp Alfredo burger, which she had no complaints about, and our son got the chicken quesadilla from the children's menu. I don't know if we're just accustomed to kids menu food being haphazardly prepared and chucked onto a plate, but his quesadillas looked superb. Lastly, the atmosphere really echos the historic feel that the rest of this part of town exudes. Decided to try Sweet Roux during an overnight stop in Culpepper, we could not have been happier with our choice. The restaurant is located in a vibrant downtown Culpepper district. Shops all seemed to close around 5:00pm, but wow what a cornucopia of choices. Roux offers great drink specials, Guinness as well as a great Irish coffee. After the waitress brought waters and our beers, we ordered an appetizer of Chicken Nachos. We travel regularly and the flavor of the chicken was amazing, it really made an otherwise traditional plate of chips, cheese, beans & peppers shine. We also ordered the Shrimp Tacos with a side of Mac 'cheese & Jägerschnitzel (Pork Tenderloin pan fried to perfection). The menu noted the pork came with cheddar mashed potatoes & he ordered a side of broccoli. While we waited for our appetizer, we had another couple of stouts. Unfortunately the appetizer arrived the same time as the entrees, kind of aggravating, but what are you going to do, you eat. The kitchen took it upon themselves to substitute the potatoes for sauerkraut, yuck. When my husband brought to the waitress's attention, she corrected with apologies. Our meals were excellent, only wish the shrimp had not been fried, but they were very tasty. We enjoyed ourselves at Sweet Roux! Stopped by for dinner after a bit of a drive and a lot of fresh air. Was looking for someplace casual and relaxed. This place is was it! The food was great, I had a Cobb salad with chicken and bacon and I even asked for items to be taken off - they made it just the way I liked it! My fiancé had a Bleu Burger and my mom had the Double "S" burger, they both loved their orders!! My dad got the chicken and waffles with a bourbon maple syrup. He liked his as well!! This restaurant has not failed us in three visits so far. The food is fantastic and the service is quick and friendly. Definitely the best restaurant I've eaten at to date in Culpepper. Not super impressed with my salmon and vegetables. The Snickerdoodle cake was too sweet, and I rarely say that about a dessert. Tried to split a piece with my mother, but even with her help we still had half of it left. Just meh, but I was hoping it would be delicious. The booths are plywood and not super comfy. This place has a unique vibe, but it's not well done. The trendy eclectic feel they try to convey on their website and menu blurbs just doesn't come through. Traveling through the area we decided to try Sweet Roux based on its Yelp review and we are delighted that we made the choice. First, both food and beverage servers were friendly and attentive. Our party of three shared the Around the World appetizer which provided a number of interesting and delicious apps accompanied by four tasty sauces. All were good, but the house barbecue sauce was notably good. While I had the Crispy Shrimp Tacos ( a great choice) the other two in the party shared the ample and very good serving of Pasta Del Mar, which they did not finish only because after the appetizer it was more than they could eat. Full as we were, we made room for desert and delighted that we did for the Bourbon Chocolate Pecan pie was outstanding. Stopped in for restaurant week since I was in the area. Too early for their dinner specials but most of the items I was interested in were available off the regular menu. Started with the fried green tomatoes- simply some of the best I've ever had. The breading was light and crisp and the bbq sauce they were served up with was on point. Then on to the chicken and waffles - the chicken was juicy and flavorful and though it looked overcooked it actually wasn't. The waffle was a little more spongy than crisp but it was still reasonably light and very tasty. The highlight though was the bourbon maple syrup - I practically licked the dish clean it was so good! It's seat yourself and half the tables are blocked off due to Covid, The decor isn't much - industrial meets diner, is the best I can describe it. This is not a fancy or romantic restaurant just a comfortable place with really good food. Kudos to the waitress who was friendly and very fast with clearing the plates - I wish I got her name. Great value for money. If you're looking for a good meal in Culpeper this place should be at the top of the list. read more

This is the kind of restaurant I wish was a block away from my own house. It is a stone's throw from the lovely suite we rented for the night, and a careful skim of the reviews here told me that we should try it for Carry-Out. We like to eat fairly wholesome and not go overboard on carbs, and Sweet Roux offered many Mediterranean options. I ordered a Mediterranean salad and the husband ordered the salmon entree. Oh, and wings to share. About online ordering-it's usually not as accurate as call-in ordering anywhere you go. Unless you don't stray from the order at all. So I wasn't surprised that they forgot the Buffalo sauce we requested on the side. But since it's a minute away from where we were, my husband had no problem retrieving it. And I won't take a star off this time-lol! The salad was fresh and tasty, and came with falafel. The salmon and sides looked perfect, and hubby reported that it tasted very good. Wings were good too with the hot sauce to dip them into. So for carry out, this earns a " thumbs up". read more

I get it, people are having a hard time finding good help but it's really undermining your business when the service isn't great. The food was excellent. We both had cajun shrimp alfredo which came with a big slice of really nice soft garlic herb bread and for dessert we shared a piece of the always delicious, although much smaller in size, piece of peanut butter pizza. The service that evening was provided by two very young women who quite honestly didn't look old enough to serve alcohol. Our server was very friendly just very inexperienced. She didn't offer specials, I had to ask. I feel like this restaurant could be so much more with better decor, better music playing (please no country music) and better service because the food is really great. My advice, go for the food but not the ambiance. This is my second review. I really want to give them a higher rating but both times service was the issue. I bumped up my rating from 2 stars to 3 this time because of the fact that I understand that finding good help is a real issue right now. read more

We stopped in for a quick snack and a couple drinks the other day around noon. There was one other patron in the restaurant. I ordered a Miller Lite, my daughter ordered a water and we ordered the Pimento Cheese Dip with Pita Bread. They were out of Miller Lite, so I ordered the next best thing.....Crown Royal on the rocks (double). MY drink was served quickly, my daughter's water not so quickly....we had to ask again. Back to my Crown Royal I have to say they give you a very generous pour! Like I said there was only one other customer and she checked out right after we ordered. You'd think Pimento Cheese and Pita would come out fairly quick, but it took about 15 minutes which is a bit long. But we weren't in a hurry and it did seem like they were doing a good amount of take out orders. My first bite of the Pimento Cheese threw me for a loop, it tasted like nothing but bacon. I'm from NC and have had my share of Pimento Cheese and have never even thought about adding bacon, even though I love bacon....just not in my Pimento Cheese. THANKFULLY the second bite tasted nothing like bacon and after eating more of the Pimento Cheese I didn't taste bacon again and don't even think there was bacon in it. But I'm telling you, my first bite had the flavor of bacon and I'm sticking to it! lol The Pimento Cheese Dip ended up being pretty good and the pita bread was fresh and warm. But I would have preferred pita chips or crackers with the Pimento Cheese. When we got the bill, at the last minute I decided to have one more drink added to the original bill. Well my first drink was $6.99 which for a double Crown Royal is a great price and part of the reason I ordered another. Well when the bill came back it was $12.99 for each drink which is still a decent price. I didn't say anything because it was an obvious mistake, but I wish they would have honored the $6.99 price for Double Crowns because I'd probably still be there! LOL Our waitress seemed a bit overwhelmed or maybe involved in something else and could have been more attentive considering we were the only ones there. My wife and I were looking for brunch, since Sunday is Brunch Day, after all. So onto my favorite search engine I went, searched for "brunch near me", and Sweet Roux in Culpeper, VA popped up. After looking at Sweet Roux's menu pics here on Yelp, we decided to check it out. We arrived, were greeted by a friendly server who sat us at a comfy booth. After looking at the menu we ordered: * Appetizer -- Chicken nachos - These were delicious, the chicken had an amazing flavor, and the server told us that it was thanks to a signature marinade used by the chef. I didn't get a picture of these because we ate them way too fast ;) * Entrees (pictures below) -- Grilled salmon with roasted red pepper sauce over basmati rice with mixed vegetables. This entrée was awesome, the flavor of the roasted red pepper sauce complimented a tasty grilled salmon - I also enjoyed the rice and mixed vegetables, which were seasoned nicely. My wife got a Greek salad with a cup of the Roasted red pepper soup, and she enjoyed both. I got to sample the roasted red pepper soup, and it had a really great flavor with a nice kick of heat. All in all, a great brunch on Sunday afternoon. Great, friendly service, and flavorful food at a decent price. Sweet Roux is a great addition to the growing food scene in Culpeper, VA, & we look forward to visiting again soon. read more

We came on Friday night at 6:35, sitting outside. A few minutes later the server came for drink orders and delivered my wife's wine. We then ordered and waited... Thirty minutes later my salad arrived. Finally, at 7:45 I went to the bar and told the bartender I wanted to pay for the wine since I am not waiting more than an hour an 10 minutes. She was attentive, quick to take up dirty plates, check on refills and super friendly. As far the food goes, it was okay but nothing amazing. We got the Grilled Salmon and The Duo (chicken and waffles with bourbon glazed steak strips) and a side of their onion rings. The onion rings and the mashed potatoes that come with The Duo were the best things we tried. The salmon and the veggies were overcooked, although the roasted red pepper sauce had good flavor. The chicken wings were decent but the steak strips were also overcooked and not as flavorful as we had hoped. Overall, the food was mediocre. read more

Came in for restaurant week and the food was amazing. Started with the fried green tomatoes topped with pulled pork - tomatoes were perfectly crispy and pork was juicy and tender. Got the filet with hollandaise and it surpassed my expectations. Topped it all off with chocolate cheesecake and I couldn't have asked for more from the food. Ended up with the wrong drink and had to wait for silverware, but I also understand that they were busy and it was the end of the night - not a deal breaker and I'll definitely be back. read more

My husband and I went here for our anniversary. We were sadly disappointed. For the prices, the service, servers and food did not line up. The servers were dressed in t-shirts and ripped jeans. The napkins were cheap paper. My entree came and had a finger print in the middle. Our server took a long time to remove our first 2 courses and then kept pestering us to get our dessert. The service was very attentive - more than we've seen in quite a while. The food was pretty good. We had the mac & cheese, Greek chicken pita and iced tea. The chicken sandwich was very good, especially the sauce/dressing. The mac & cheese was fine, and had a lot of meat on top. The iced tea was really fresh, high quality, and we had timely refills. (Seems like a small point, but really good iced tea can be hard to come by.) We didn't have mixed drinks, but they seemed to offer a pretty good selection of mixed cocktails. read more

Excellent food and service. Wide variety of food choices that are fresh and delicious. Caesar Salad had homemade croutons and dressing. The chicken in our salad and nachos tasted like it had been marinated and was tender and flavorful. Our burgers were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Dining area is clean and that's what matters to me. After a long, very hot day at Monticello we sought a nice air conditioned spot for a sit down on our way home. We found this little treasure in the heart of Culpepper! The restaurant upon entry is very clean and there's plenty of room between tables. The waitress was very friendly and never let a glass go dry. Our party of four had the Rib-eye (1xmedium /1xmedium well) which were cooked perfectly. Another member of the family had a Cobb Salad that was delicious. I went for the Cod and Shrimp which was really well seasoned and tasted great. Thanks Sweet Roux for giving us a great meal, great service, and a wonder break from the long day.
