Growing up in Chicago my favorite place to go for a Chicago dog was Dear Franks. Over 30 years later while Dear Franks is still in business, I found out that Dear Franks has an uncle named Frank. Well maybe they're not related but they both sure have great Chicago food. As a Chicagoan, we are very passionate about our hot dogs. Nothing says comfort to me like a Chicago dog. So we made our way over to Uncle Franky's. They have a menu with several different hot dogs, polish sausage, burgers and beefs. Johnnies in Chicago to this day is still my favorite beef. Well when in Minnesota, Johnnies is a long drive but good thing for me is there are some options here in MN where I can get a beef. So we ordered a beef, Chicago dog, some onion rings and my wife went rogue and ordered the Carolina dog that came with chili and coleslaw.  Big props for the Chicago dog. As good of a Chicago dog as I have outside of Chicago. Good snap to that dog, fresh bun and all the usual toppings. For this one hot dog I should have enjoyed it more instead of channeling my inner Joey Chestnut. Did I mention I love Chicago dogs? The beef was also very good. Not quite as good as in Chicago but hey we are 400 some miles away. The beef was tender and the giardiniera fresh and crisp. The onion rings, while not freshly made, were solid. My wife said she enjoyed her Carolina dog. I just can't do the chili and coleslaw combo, but she liked it. Very good Chicago food. Would love to come back again for another Chicago dog, beef and try one of those burgers that look good too. read more

Small burger/hot dog joint with decent parking and patio outside. We went for a quick bite before Art-A-Whirl and boy did they get busy fast. There were 2 cooks behind the grill but seemed like the main cook made sure food was done correctly despite how busy it was. We ordered a small fries, burger and the Chicago dog. Food was pretty inexpensive and was pretty good given the price. Only thing that bothered me was the artificial food coloring used in the relish. It was way too green, like we're still celebrating St. Patty's day in May. read more

I love this place, it's our second time eating here and each time the staff were amazing. They're welcoming and super funny. Just a chill place to have lunch & also get a couple laughs in! The chili is a hit or miss, I kind of realize that it's either you like it or you don't. Personally my boyfriend and I love it! The tater tots are crunchy and fresh, same with the fries. I saw a review about the chicago dog having no tomatoes or pickles, there is & I don't know what that person was talking about. This place is AMAZING!! The best hole in the wall food you can imagine. You can hear the food being cooked in front of you. I got the juicy juicy and my partner got the Philly cheesesteak and it was great. If you're ever in north-east Minneapolis, definitely make sure to check this place out. I had driven by this place about a hundred times when going through NE Minneapolis along Broadway. Looks divey. I love divey. Looks like a hole-in-the-wall. I live for hole-in-the-walls! Why hadn't I stopped sooner?? I'm making it a habit now to start stopping when I see something delicious looking. Their old school, chalk menu behind the counter is adorned with tons of great looking dog, sausage, and burger creations. I'm for sure headed back soon to check out them wieners. But I was craving burger, so burger I got. Uncle Franky Burger -- 1/5 lb. of 100% Angus ground beef, stacked with ketchup, mustard, pickle, and raw onion. Served on our toasted, home-baked bun. I drive by Franky's almost every day and love small neighborhood classics like this so it was only a matter of time before I stopped in. I let the staff know it was my first time there and they were very helpful with making recommendations. As you'll read in other reviews, the prices make this a great value for a quick bite. It's not the best thing you'll ever eat, but it's solid for the price and atmosphere adds to the experience. We tried a 4 different dogs, but the Carolina Slaw was by far our favorite. On paper the combination of ingredients doesn't all seem to go together, but it was delicious and could be a meal in itself. We also tried the Chicago Dog, Polish Franky, and Wall Street. The Polish dogs are quite a bit bigger and pack a little more flavor than the classic dogs, but size would be the biggest difference if looking to go that route. I am normally a big fan of sauerkraut and onions, but would skip the Wall Street for one of others next time. Make sure to have some napkins ready! read more

I loved it. The two older guys working behind the counter were bickering with each other the whole time I was there, which, if you're like me, constitutes free entertainment. We ordered the Chicago dog, chili dog, and cheese fries. The guy working the register graciously gave me the cheese topping to my fries for free, as an apology for making us wait to order (for what could've been no longer than a minute). The cheese fries were delicious, especially after we sprinkled on some of their free Cajun seasoning. The chili dog looked a mess (as it should) and tasted quite nice. The dogs themselves were snappy and not soggy. Prices weren't bad either. This is the place to come if you're looking to experience some old school Northeast Minneapolis grit. read more

You'll get a great hotdog, covered with cheese, chili, or whatever your thing is, with a side of welcoming hospitality and Scooby Doo themed decor. Never expected to walk into a tiny room with walls painted bright red and yellow, Scooby Doo toys abound, and some wild wall art, but also of course this is what the inside of Uncle Franky's looks like. Our first time there, which was called out immediately based on our bewildered 'omg this menu?? it looks amazing and is SO CHEAP?' looks, the guy working the till said something about being the Top 5 hotdogs of something something in the US. Ok! In hotdog reviews we trust, we ended up with a Chicago kielbasa, a slaw dog with chili, and an I don't even know what else but it had pickles and mustard. I've had many burgers around MN and heard this place has some great dive burgers cooked on the flat top and even local house made sodas to choose from. I came with a buddy and we got a triple cheeseburger, yes, triple! And Philly cheesesteak which they had a ton of varieties of. To start out, the burger looked great right off the bat. The cheese was melted nicely and the bun was toasted. Unfortunately, the patty was overcooked and was basically charred for how long it was cooked. It was almost burnt with black bits on the outside of the patties. The toppings and cheese helped mask the flavor a bit but it was tough to see through. The Philly had tons of flavor and was a perfect combo of meat, cheese and veggies. The downside for this one was the salt and surprisingly, it was too salty. Usually I don't run into this issue but with too much salt, you can't save it. At least with something being undersalted, you can add more, but in this case, we had to remove part of the filling so the bread helped balance out the saltiness. read more

I'm a Chicagoan always on the lookout for real Chicago foods . . . They do a fairly legit Maxwell Street Polish. No sport peppers, and not sure about them dicing the grilled onion, but solid enough that I told myself next time I'll try their Italian Beef Oof . . . I had the second worst Italian Beef of my life at Uncle Franky's on Broadway tonight (pic is from a minute or so after the order arrived . . . look at the pressed hunk of 'meat') The beef was obviously out of a frozen bag of IB, because there were HUGE chunks of it pressed and unbroken up. Like they dumped a frozen bag of 'meat' in a fairly flavorless jus and didn't bother coaxing them apart. The parts that were broken up got beaten to hell: shards of roof shingles. The roll had near zero integrity, and disintegrated by being dipped. I had to eat their IB with a fork. The giardiniera was of the mildest variety I've had, and they didn't add any of the sweet peppers I ordered Outright, it was a clusterpity from bell to bell, and . . . and . . . Franky has snappy hot dogs with flavorful toppings. We got the Coney Island and the Carolina Slaw Dog. The bread on both was overwhelming: too much and too dry, almost like a hoagie roll. The hot dogs had a crisp snappy bite and clean beefy flavor. The ground beef topping was too fine and came out overcooked and grainy. The Carolina was well balanced savoury slaw with spicy sriracha. Much better than the Coney dog which was essentially cheap chili on a hot dog. read more

It's a really small place with a few tables, seats at the counter and picnic tables outside (weather permitting). There are only 2 workers... the guy that takes the orders and the guy that cooks them. Since there's only one cook and everything is made to order the wait was pretty long. I wasn't given an order number, but was advised by colleagues who had visited before to just remember the person(s) that ordered before me and when they got theirs I'd know mines was coming up. That tip was helpful since there were lots of people waiting and since I couldn't understand a thing the cook said as he called out the orders when they were ready. When my meal was finally done, I committed the biggest mistake of the day...probably the week. I bit into an onion ring and scorched my tongue. Everything was piping hot, which I should have known, but I was just so hungry. I had to wait a few minutes for it al to cool and used that time to nurse my tongue with some soda (which is bottomless by the way). The onion rings were good and the portion was pretty decent. I got the Wall Street hot dog that came with sauerkraut, onions and mustard and thought it was only okay. I prefer dogs that are steamed or boiled, but this one was grilled. Also, since this is called a Wall Street dog I imagined the onions, would have been the onion sauce found as a condiment for hot dogs in NY where Wall Street is, but nope....it was just raw onions. I ate it anyway (doused with ketchup of course) feeling more than satisfy (stuffed) and making a mental note that it wasn't for me and I wouldn't get it again. If I visit again, I think I'll get a burger. One of my colleagues got one and it looked good. This is such an endearing neighborhood gem. It would be a toughie to find better deals and service in the Northeast. Uncle Franky's is a little building with a pretty big parking lot. There's about 10+ assorted table and high tops inside + bar seating by the open kitchen. Order at the register and they'll call your order when it's ready to be picked up at the counter. But enough with the boring stuff! We ordered: a Chicago dog, a coney dog + wizz, a double Franky's Burger + bacon + cheese, and tater tots. First of all, the prices!! A single Uncle Franky's Burger is $2.95!!! Making it a double and adding cheese and bacon was about $5! And boy is it all worth it and more. Their Vienna franks are juicy and snappy. The Chicago dog was perfect with all the right fixings on a soft poppy seed bun. The coney dog wasn't the best I've ever had, but it sure was a delicious mess. The burger had wonderfully seared thin patties and a buttered bun. I just still can't get over the value. They deep fry the bacon which made it kind of chewy, and the tots were a tad overcooked and greasy. Also very notable: the amazing service. The woman at the counter and the cook were both incredibly nice and honestly, just seemed like really cool people. My friends and I stopped in here right before the quarantine began and the food was so good and cheap. I love a dive feeling and this had that, no-frills. I ordered the Chicago dog and the snap of that hot dog was like a meaty whip cracking into my soul. I could def do the all you can eat challenge they have, I think it was like $12 but can't recall. An old fashioned 'hole in the wall' type of joint. It actually has a few tables (something like 10) and a few seats at the counter. Food is good. I think the specialty here are Chicago style hot dogs. I had the burger which was very good. Not too greasy and it tasted good. The bun was also nice and fresh. Everything is made to order just in front of you at the counter. I went here with my niece and a couple of her friends yesterday, just to get a quick bite to eat in that was in the area after our paint and sip excursion. It's the usual "greasy spoon" type of spot, where it's rather tight and small inside, but doles out the good stuff. We all ordered combos, mine was a salmon burger with fries and a ginger ale. My niece ordered a burger, as well as her other friends. Chili cheese fries were also ordered. Since the inside of the establishment is small, we placed our order and decided to sit outside. Our order was called out, and my niece and her friends went back inside to get our food. Hallelujah--the salmon burger was perfectly cooked and seasoned and was neither DRY NOR BLAND! It included mayo, tomato, onion, and chopped pickles. I really did enjoy it. The fries were OK; I prefer a little more salt and/or seasoning, but I really should have gone back inside and put some ketchup on them. It appeared that my niece and her friends were also enjoying their food. I did like their patio area outside; there were just too many bees buzzing around the time we were out there, so we kinda cut things short and headed out. All-in-all, a decent spot for some, as they claim, Chicago-style-I'm-not-on-a-diet type food, though the salmon burger was an excellent choice to feel like I was still eating something healthy yet tasty. I highly recommend it. :) It's not in my neck of the woods, so it's not a place I would return to often unless I were nearby. read more
