I visited Minneapolis for a week and found myself here just about every day, as my AirBnB was just down the street The service is good. Very east coast in terms of directness and promptness. Prices are very affordable. Just note that the meat patties are very small (1/5lb). You'll probably want at least a double if you're a meat eater. The veggie patties are hearty though. My daughter and I have eaten here for years. Only a few times, off and on since COVID. Loved the food today, same as usual. The young woman taking our order, which was a little complicated, was lovely. However, the woman cooking the food was rude, hostile, unfriendly, and endlessly complaining as she made our food and that of other customers. Our order may have caused her some stress. But, we don't need to hear about it while we are waiting for our food. Kindness goes a long way. We will go back for the food. But might expect to be treated poorly by the cook. read more

This place is small with a lot of options! My husband and I gave this place a try and for our first time, the food was decent. I say decent because we ordered the Chicago style polish and it was really good! And I ordered a Philly cheese steak and that wasn't so good. It lacked on meat and it was a bit dry. The food didn't live up to a video that was posted by an influencer. My husband also ordered an Italian beef and again, it lacked flavor and the fixings that would come with an Italian beef sandwich. Everything looked better on a video. We went back a second time for the Chicago style polish and it didn't taste the same as our first time. We decided to order a coney(?) island. It was regular sized and again, didn't live up to the video that an influencer posted but it was good. There is a lot of other things that could be worth trying from the menu. Any Illinois natives living in the Minneapolis area - Uncle Franky's has the best Italian beefs in the state. By miles. It's not close. Unbelievable hole in the wall spot. The building has as much grit as Dennis Rodman in the paint going up for rebounds. The people are fantastic (big shout out to Larry even though you're a Cub fan). 4.5 stars is fitting for this place. 5 would put it in the rarefied air of Hot Doug's in Chicago, and this is not that. As far as a Minneapolis hot dog joint goes, this gets my Chicagoan thumbs up . Prices are slightly lower than Chris and Rob's and you get more food. Classic Chicago dogs are the way to go, though they overloaded mine with relish. But unfortunately I ordered the cheese fries and what they should be called "frozen fries you could buy at the store topped with watered down cheese". (I know, a little long and it doesn't exactly have a ring to it) I have seen reviews where people liked the cheese fries but I personally did not. Now to the positive portion of the review and it is VERY positive. I got the Coney Island Chili dog and it might have been the best I've had in my life, certainly the best I've had in Minneapolis. I'm always looking for a local source for a traditional Italian Beef so when somebody suggested this place I had to try it out. My 12 yo daughter and I stopped in a Saturday afternoon once we found the place....and after seeing it decided to go in despite the "charm". The ratings: Deep fried pickles: 3 Italian Beef: 3.5 Chicago Dog: 3 (according to my daughter - the chicago dog expert) Soda: 1 they have some house brand soda machine that tastes like that crap you make for yourself at home The staff was nice, the service was pretty fast, and the food was OK. I'm pretty picked when it comes to Italian Beefs and this one was better than most I've had in the Twin Cities but certainly not the best - and definitely not even close to a true Chicago sandwich. However, the hot dog combinations are fewer and less creative than the Wienery offers. For example, there's no hot dog like the Wienery's Upsetter dog with Bacon and egg. During our recent visit, I had a cajun red hot dog with onions, mustard and relish. The dog had just the right amount of heat and snap -- making it an instant favorite. Every dog I order at Uncle Franky's going forward will include this slightly spicy dog variation. I also tried a chicago-style polish. It was sizeable and well topped, but lacked the 'snap' of other dogs offerings. Dogs at Uncle Franky's are steamed by default -- but I'd recommend asking for your polish to be grilled or deep fried (available by request) for a better texture. Uncle Frankie is right down the block for me. So it makes for a super easy lunch spot. The menu is pretty intense for how small the place is. During this visit I tried the cheese stuffed burger. It was fantastic and I would order it again. My coworker loves the root beer floats and the fact that you can get free refills all the fountain pop. I've had a number of hot dogs from this place. They have all been great. The only thing I haven't liked is the French fries but I'll will give them another shot. The tiny building has an eclectic, small diner kind of feel to it. It's smoky and greasy inside but smells delicious, and is by no means a turn-off, more like authentic feeling. The employees were friendly. I had the classic Uncle Franky Dog, my companion had the Triple Motown Chili Burger, and we also ordered a large fry. The fries were delicious and fresh and you get a HUGE amount for what you pay. My hot dog was probably the most satisfying I've had, although I wish it was a little warmer. Proceeded to wait another 15 minutes for a sad excuse of a replacement was presented to me 2 cheesesteaks, bread cold and almost no meat but drowning in cheese sauce thrown together in a box and a sopping wet chili cheese dog that had obviously been sitting way too long. I think it's all been said before, but this made to order small hotdog/burger/sandwich place hits the spot when you are craving some greasy food. The relish is neon green and the burgers are amazingly melty with american cheese. I've been in here twice and each time it wasn't very busy at all, was a hot day, the staff was friendly, and the food was delicious. We tried the chicago dog today and I was a fan! except I took the tomato off because it was a little too smooshy for my taste. We got an order of onion rings and they weren't anything special but good fried food and not too much to overwhelm you. They servve Vienna beef which is great. I had the Italian beef with hot peppers dipped. The downside is the beef. dry flaky bits of beef. I should have tried the Chicago dog but tried the Coney dog instead. The chili was pretty flavorless, not even the onions added flavor (maybe the cheese would have helped?) We also tried the "new" tater tots but the grease they were cooked in was so old they were not edible. An employee asked if everything was ok and when we told her about the tots, she just said "ok" and walked away. I'm not expecting Michelin star quality here but something edible would have been nice.
