The sweet tea was terrible though, I dumped it out and got some soda. I eat bbq all over this country and I must say... These folks are pretty darn good I've tried their ribs, pulled pork, smoked turkey, and brisket... All top notch Cole slaw and baked beans are excellent choices for sides, although okra and fried mushrooms are also great choices Smoked wings aren't quite on par as the rest of the menu... Pretty good bbq. The pork sandwich was moist yet firm. The toasted bun made this sandwich far better than others. They offer several sauces. I had the sweet smokie which was good enough for me to buy a bottle to go. The baked beans were good too but I'm not a fan of their potato salad. Personal preference. Great place to get BBQ off Hwy 57. The sauces are great, half chicken was well smoked and ribs fell off the bone. Roadside stop that was remarkably clean, we appreciated the tables outside so our dog could join us. Only complaint is the fountain soda had a small selection; no Diet Pepsi. However, picking up some of Joe's tangy BBQ and sweet mustard sauces to-go makes up for it. They're going to make a great marinade. read more

We were looking for somewhere interesting to eat lunch in the Mount Vernon area. The Yelp reviews and menu convinced us to try Uncle Joe's. It did not disappoint. There were four of us and the order included ribs, fried bologna sandwich, brisket sandwich and sloppy joe. All but the sloppy joe got rave reviews. The sloppy joe was deemed okay. The fries, beans, Mac & cheese, and coleslaw were all great too. Service was quick and friendly. We'll definitely come back if we're in the area. read more

This place was fantastic. It's a little place across the street from the loves. Perfect place for truckers looking for some good grub. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. My husband had the brisket sandwich with the chili cheese fries... he LOVED it! I had the 1/2 smoked chicken. The chicken was really flavorful, with crispy skin and juicy on the inside. Stopped here for a quick lunch on the way home to Kansas City. The staff was very friendly and the place was very clean. I had the pulled pork and baked beans and my wife had the smoked turkey sandwich and chili. The pulled pork was good/decent but the smoked turkey was out of this world amazing! Let's not forget the chili, it was to die for! Good flavor and not too spicy. While the baked beans were good I found them to be on the sweet side so if that isn't your thing I'd avoid it. I preferred the smoked sweet BBQ sauce they offered over the others since it had a smoky robust flavor. The seasoned fries were also delicious. Young lady at cash register ( where you order ) was friendly. I order the 3 pick. Three meats of yoir choide and 2 sides. So i ordered brisket , smoked sausage and 2 st louis style ribs. Ok the 1/4 lb of brisket was dry and only 2 complete slices the rest was like what was scraped up from the cutting board. The sausage was a somewhat white / lite tan colored sausage not sure what it was. The ribs were on the small side and dry. A fellow yelper raved about the coleslaw so i ordered that. Sorry bud but it was way to sweet and way to wet. Fried okra was frozen but hot and cooked just right i would eat the okra all day. So for the low score but for 16 dollars i was not impressed. Awful service, the lady at the register is a walking cracker zombie with rude "dont want to be alive attitude". awful food. Hamburger was dry. Brisket sandwich nasty. Had to ear something but wanted to vomit when i tried the smoked sausage, almost raw definitely not well smoked. Couldn't eat the fries they put some nasty cheese on them. Awful awful awful. NEVER GO THERE .... You are better off heading a few hours south to Texas then eating obamas home-state wanna be bbq. I think Texas ships them their spoiled meat to serve... Awesome spot across from the truck stop!!! Split an order of Ribs and the Sloppy Joe Queso fries, after we finished it was so good we bought another rack to go. The ribs are good enough to eat dry but their sauces are wonderful as well. I especially liked the sweet mustard sauce. read more

Pulled into Gun Creek CEO campground next exit south of this restaurant for an overnight stop! Went back to Uncle Joes for carryout supper! No disappointment whatsoever! Husband had brisket sandwich, slaw and fries! I had half smoked chicken, breaded mushrooms and slaw! It was all very good! Brisket sandwich is on a very large bun - very meaty and smoked nicely! Tender, not dry! Said his fries were great! Both of us loved the creamy slaw! My chicken was smoked perfectly -tender, moist and very tasty! Breaded mushrooms were amazing! Ok, so maybe the place doesn't rate on the scale of regional BBQ legends but I don't understand the harshness of the criticisms on here. It certainly beats McD across the way, and I found that certain pairings were exponentially more appealing than others. Then there were the signature crockpot pork 'n beans..sweet, savory, meaty goodness As to the pairings, I found that the Hot BBQ sauce went equally well on both the ribs and pulled pork that I enjoyed, but not so well as the Sweet Smoke to the ribs and the Sweet Mustard to the pulled pork. The dry rub on the ribs was flavorful but not overpowering, and both meats were tastefully balanced between dry and moist such that either could be enjoyed either dry or sauced :D (As a loyal saucer, this last point is of particular significance to me personally) All in all, if you're in the area and anywhere near hungry, this spot would not be a waste of your time read more

Great sauces, however the BBQ was totally lacking a true BBQ Taste. It appeared that nothing was smoked. The brisket without sauce was dry. Meh. Ribs, pulled pork, beans, seasoned fries... just about all 2 stars. Rib rub was good, but texture was just ok. Pulled pork was too greasy. Beans weren't memorable in really a bad or good way... and the fries, though seasoned well, were soggy. The sauces really take one far away from the traditional BBQ... their tangy and mustard sauces had quite an extra zip to them (not heat) that just wasn't what either of us wanted on BBQ. Have you heard of Ina, Illinois? If you don't live in the area, chances are slim. But... you may have heard of Uncle Joe... their BBQ sauces are distributed in 100s of places in North America and I had seen it before in Montreal at Marché Atwater's "Les douceurs du marché". At first, I didn't linked the two. The place really looked like an independent local BBQ joint, but when I walked inside and saw the sauces, I did begin to wonder if they were a chain. So, the answer is no, not a chain, Uncle Joe's restaurant is one of a kind but their main business is the BBQ sauces. So how is it? Good. Especially the brisket. Good smoked taste and their sauces are very good, I did like the spicy one a lot. The place is basic. Service is also but the staff is very nice if you engage them on their products of the area. A great place to stop whenever you are travelling... between Chicago and Memphis... maybe? read more

The more I think about my meal here, the lower I want to rate it. We stopped here on our way to St Louis looking for some good barbecue. I would like to think they were just having a bad day, but it really just wasn't very good. I got a pulled pork sandwich. The pork tasted a little off, was VERY fatty, and was served on a heavily buttered roll (which would have been good, were the meat lean, but just added to the greasy feeling). The sides (my brother had seasoned fries that they forgot to season & I had potato salad) were ok, but just ok. Their one saving grace was they had several sauces that were all quite good. I feel this restaurant deserves another chance, but after eating two of the best BBQ meals I've ever had in St Louis & Kansas City, I can't imagine stopping here again even if I was in the area (which is unlikely) read more

Stopped at the gas station across the street and was lured in by the good smell of BBQ. Service was fast and staff was friendly. The restaurant and bathrooms were clean too. I ordered the pulled pork and he got the double cheeseburger with bacon. The bbq sauce (sweet and smoky) was really good. I could have drunk a bottle of it. The pork was a little fatty but it was still good. The bun was soft and sweet. We joked about driving there (which is 2 hours away from us) just to get more. The price was nice. read more

We graze from pit Q to pit Q, and Joe's gets mixed reviews. Three of us loved the turkey, but another was not fond of it. I did find an inordinate amount of fat in mine (which probably profoundly influenced the one nay-sayer) as pictured with the plastic fork for perspective. This does not count what I accidentally ate before I knew to pick it out. One rib eater approved them; the other not so much. Pulled pork was unremarkable, except as being dry. Mushrooms, baked beans, and coke slaw got good reviews, the mac an' cheese was ruled an unhealthy pure delight, and the guy who ordered the turkey/slaw "bowl" gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up. Sweet tea is polluted by strong-flavored water. Sauces were very good, especially Smokey and Mustard, which we all voted for. Original scored just behind Smokey, but Vinegar produced some faces. Over all, some mentioned preferring Backwoods BBQ in Paducah. Decor is Early Dive - corrugated, galvanized tin and chalkboards; noisy and echoey; blindingly bright ceiling lights; order at the counter. Lots of truckers. read more
