Run, don't walk to Uncle John's. First time here. Had read Trip Advisor, got great reviews. Moseyed on over from Rockford on a little weekend ride. Best chicken wild rice soup EVER. If you'd made it at home, it wouldn't be better than this! Served Sundays only. I got the open faced roast beef. Best ever in a diner as well! REAL roast beef not that deli shaved stuff you get in other places. Looked like rump roast. Tender and very tasty. I could not make it any better at home and I'm a good cook. Even the mashed potatoes and gravy were a cut above anywhere else. Decaf was excellent as was the service. And they actually had Christmas music playing, typical church songs. Waitress Jennifer rude as hell threw my food bag at me, when getting order to go, talks back and scream at me while been overcharged on my bill. Owner Patty comes and instead solving the issue creates an argument. How much food a petite old lady, 80 years old can eat? I requested kid menu item: small pancakes, 2 eggs, side of bacon, I usually paid $5.40 when Miriane owners daughter served me this item with no problem, no argument. Now comes rude attitude waitress Jennifer tried to charge me $12.00 when requested same item. I requested to Patty review price. She comes with $8.00 as described: (short pancake stock) 2 small pancakes $5.00, side of bacon $3.00, still not my regular kids menu value. Patty (owner) becomes all defensive stating that kids menu it's meant for kids under 12 y/o, remind you Miriane (owners daughter) never had an issue full filing my order and charging me as kids menu stated. Waitress Jennifer has to go with that bad attitude. Patty you've just lost a regular customer since you've been greedy, rude and not satisfying your customers while overcharging. Biscuits and gravy are disgusting! My wife and I were there in Nov 8 for breakfast. She ordered biscuits and gravy. There was something wrong with that gravy. It tasted funky. We kept tasting it to try to determine what was in it, but literally could not put it in our mouths for more than a couple tastes. Putrid! We are not fussy eaters at all, but there was something in that gravy that didn't belong there. The really weird thing is that one of the cooks kept looking at my wife from the kitchen. Did he know there was something weird with her food? I had eggs, sausage, pancakes and it was good. I won't be back though. How do you screw up sausage gravy so badly that it is not edible? A nice, small town diner feel, owned by a local family. Fairly priced, good and fast service. Expect a short wait during peak time weekend hours. Best biscuits and gravy around. We mainly come for breakfast so I can't say much about other meals but we have never left disappointed. read more

It sucks for a business but being open during a pandemic when everyday it gets worse and the county has a no indoor dining order is selfish, dangerous and irresponsible. Uncle John's diner, is a home town place for a home town boy. I've been eating at this place for more than half of my life. It's the classic family, friendly neighborhood. If you've eaten here it's like your back home with your family for a great Hungry man skillet, hash browns, jalapenos and a side of toast. Usually I get a couple slices of their amazing pies and cheese cakes, especially the strawberry cheese cake. Holy crap it was one of the best cheese cakes I have ever had. Well working in Belvidere I heard a couple of people talk about this place, well guess this was my karma for cheating on Johnny Pamcakes! So about 3 quarters of the way through my egg white veggie omelette I find something that I don't believe was supposed to be in the ingredients for my meal, a damn BUG! Never again will I go back! I finally decided to eat here now I must say the price is reasonable the portions are great but yes there is a but i had the eggs hash browns and hamburger steak my hash browns were too hard was too much crisp the eggs were wonderful the steak had no seasoning it was very juicy but no seasoning and it tasted like a cow like raw even though well cooked my husband on the other hand loved it so that's why I gave it 3 stars personally I won't do breakfast again I will try lunch and review again read more

I've driven past this place a gajillion times and so finally this morning I decided it was time to visit this crowded joint. I usually judge a breakfast place by its biscuits and gravy. So I set out to see if this place was all I thought it'd be. There was supposed to be 2 eggs, over easy. After two delicious cups of coffee, my piping hot food came out. Not 2 but a bonus 3 eggs! Our waitress, Theresa I believe, was very friendly and did a great job keeping my cup full. The biscuits were amazing! The 3 runny eggs were stacked on the gravy which was thick and flavorful. It was a trifecta of perfecta! Very solid place with many regulars and definitely a place I will be going to in the future on hopefully a regular basis. Been here 3 times and each time I gain 10 pounds. They serve huge amounts, but beware...they ALWAYS give you more than you order. Order two eggs, you get three. Order one pancake, you get two. It is a nice touch they ask if you would like onions, peppers, etc. in your hash browns. Good sized omelets with ingredients of your choice, but they were a tad overcooked. Toast was buttered and hot, eggs cooked properly. The decor on the outside and the decor of the interior are drastically different. A good clean place for a large amount of food at an exceptionally low price. Two people can eat a large breakfast with additional sides and beverages for $10, not something one can do at many places these days. Great and tasty menu selections for your typical breakfast items. There are a few specialties which sounded really good but haven't tried them as of yet. If you like coffee, the service is extremely fast for fill up's. I would have a sip and my cup would be filled right back to the rim. I went there on a monday because it was recommended too bad they were wrong . I had swedish pancakes with strawberries and bacon . They covered them in so much whipped cream that it looked like a mid winter snow storm . It was also too cold inside the restaurant and the decor looks as if it came from a 1970's restaurant due to the age . We were driving west on I-90 and looking for a good local breakfast after the wasteland surrounding O'Hare and found this place. Tasty, generous and very reasonably priced breakfast. The people are nice and the coffee keeps coming. The Swedish pancakes are delicious and different. Order lightly, portions are very large. read more

John's is a great dive. If you want an elegant dinner, you have to go somewhere else. The food and service is usually very good and the prices are great. They have a large selection and the menu is the typical family resturant style. It is great comfort food. The decor is dive but my wife and I enjoyed many lunches and breakfasts there. read more
