Got some Sweet potato fries and Korean Kalbi sliders. Very little fries and a small slider for $7.00. The Kalbi sliders is really salty and sweet at the same time and the fries are greasy. Our friend got a teriyaki bowl for $10. Although the bowl was pretty tasty but didn't expect an Hawaiian teriyaki bowl has black beans, salsa, salad all stuffed in a bowl. It tasted more like the chicken bowl you can get at El Pollo Loco. Some fellow yelper mention on one of the review below that it's only a Food truck and we shouldn't have that high of an expectations. I agree but if you want us to low down our expectations, they should lower down their prices!! Uncle Lau's is in the category of a "Gourmet" food truck right? "Aloha au ia 'oe" For those of you on the mainland, that's Hawaiian for "I love you" and what I said to my pulled pork sandwich at Uncle Lau's after taking my first bite. Yeah....yeah....those of you reading this are saying to yourself "Why in the hell is Rodney trying to pass himself off as an Islander when his pasty white Haole-ass is in Los Angeles" but after eating here, I'm now calling me a native. Just ask Cin T. or Emi H. or Santi T. - we're now Ohana. I can go on and on about all the great things we Hawaiians do but there is nothing better than pork done well. When Bill C. told me about Uncle Lau's, and how they pretty much just frequent Santa Monica, I knew they were at the top of my truck list next time I was in that area. The only question in my mind when I approached the truck was do I get the sandwich or the rice bowl? I debated long enough to engage the owner and ultimately went with the sandwich. Why engage the owner? If you have ever seen "Honeymoon in Vegas" he is a dead ringer for Pat Morita's character and funny as hell. I understood about half of what he said but everything he did say was followed by a laugh. Only a few minutes later my order was called and off I went to enjoy. While they give you BBQ sauce, save it for the fries as the pork needs nothing else. It's tender, juicy and has the right amount of seasoning. In fact, it's even better than that. The flavors of the cole slaw neither hide or take over the sandwich and add the right amount of texture to it. The only thing missing to make this perfect was my toes in the sand at Tunnels beach! I also tried the Korean Kalbi Ribs which were good and packed the right amount of punch but came nowhere near the goodness of the pork. Speaking of the fries, they were done perfectly and much better than one truck that proclaims these as their product. Found this truck today @ Pennsylvania and Stewart a.k.a MTV Parking lot along with Yum2 Bowls and BooL. Ordered: - Shrimp Scampi (spicy) - $7 came with 6 jumbo Shrimps and 2 scoops of rice - Kalbi Burrito - $6 came with some chips I was expecting a spicier scampi from the smell, however, it wasn't exactly that. It's sweet and spicy garlicy jumbo shrimp, a bit too sweet for my palette. The burrito was okay, a bit bland for the taste, could use more sauce and seasoning for the kalbi. I like the fact that they gave u a card for buy 10 get 1 free, it's like an incentive to return, however, unless there's no other better truck around, then I will come back for this. Be warned, it took about 15-20minutes for ur order to come out if there's some crowd around. read more

I stopped on Santa Monica's foof truck alley fully expecting to try India Jones; but two of the three employees were standing at their truck (under the overhang) sucking on tubes of burning tobacco and exhaling customer repellent into the environment. So I kept walking down the block and came across Uncle Lau. Almost ordered a Moco Loco until I spied Shrimp Scampi on the menu??? Hawaiians eat Scampi? well not the same way Italians do, but nonetheless Uncle Lau serves up one heck of a good meal. Normally, the Scampi I am familiar with is on a bed of rice in the scampi sauce; but today it was served Hawaiian Style, that is served up from an ice cream scoop. 2 big mounds of white rice. Plain white rice. Boring old rice. what the heck I 'll try the dumb old rice. Man this is good rice. the fluffiest white rice ever. Man I wish I had more rice. And the shrimp, there were 6 and they were humongous, and the were fried in a sweet spicy, Asian Garlic sauce. And they were good too. As it "happens" I have had shrimp burritos that cost more than the 7.00 I paid today where the whole burrito had less than half of one single shrimp from Uncle Lau. And he gave me 6 of them. I decided to go surf and turf today to get a feel for what Uncle Lau's has to offer. When I received my order of one spicy shrimp taco and one Kalbi beef taco I immediately noticed that the beef taco looked a little dry. So I went back to the truck to squirt a little of the red sauce on it. In the middle of saucing the second taco I realized the "sauce" was ketchup. I'm an idiot, fine, I'll find a way to deal with the situation. Since I was eating by myself I was free to try to lick off the excess ketchup, but I was less successful on the shrimp taco. I loved the shrimp taco though. I spied a bottle of Sriracha in the truck, and that is where I assumed the spiciness comes from. It had only a mild to medium spiciness, but it was full of flavor, freshness, and the shrimp were cooked nicely. On the other hand, the Kalbi beef taco was just okay. I wish it was deeply marinated and had some type of sauce on the meat. Besides the meat, there was just a little kim chi and some red lettuce that wasn't really needed. I think the next time I come here I'll try the shrimp scampi. read more

The spicy shrimp taco was standard issue. A couple of grilled shrimp which were slightly overcooked and chewy, with a salsa of cilantro, onion, and tomatoes. I ate it like I would eat a McDonald's big mac. Which reminds me...why was it so damn greasy? There was a pool of orange grease at the bottom of my tortilla and it was kind of gross. read more

Loved their new item of Fried Spam. Not too salty but definitely yummy with the perfect crunch on the outside. I have tried basically everything on their truck and I have to say that I am always coming back for more. My favorites are their shrimp scampi. I love the spicy garlic butter sauce. And to the person who thought it was all grease, it is not. It is all delicious yummy butter and garlic. I can't forget their chicken sandwich with the spicy mixed peppers. Went to the Long Beach Street Food Fest at the Rainbow Lagoon Park. After the brisk walk from my apartment I had to grab an ice cold beer to start the festivities...just a lotta hurry up and wait. So I couldn't help but notice the sun, cool breeze, and short shorts all over the place. So many short shorts so little time...tsk tsk. Went through the whole park full of at least 20 trucks to scope out the offerings. There was no way I was gonna wait 2 hours+ to get no grilled cheese sammiches though. The grilled cheese truck had a line that stretched though most of the park at all times! People were waiting in line with lawn chairs for chrissake. So my first destination was Uncle Lau's Island BBQ because I had to try the kalbi slider and sweet potato fries ($7). Pretty decent price for a great sandwich and fries from a truck. The kalbi (which I think is more bulgogi than kalbi) was tender and tasty with the kimchee on top made my day. The sweet potato fries were real good going down, sweet and crunchy but not hard. I was happy now and excited to try other trucks. I've had truck food before but nothing like what I experienced here. I'm tempted to drop their star rating down a notch based on my very frustrating lunch experience. And, if my portion of chicken teriyaki hadn't been super delicious and flavorful, not to mention reasonably priced, I might have done just that. Lucky for them I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch. I waited thirty minutes for my food and I was not the only person in the crowd getting a little disgruntled. I think they really need to inspect their deployment because the poor women outside who was enduring much of the angry mob was just standing there. Her services would have been much more helpful inside the truck helping prepare food. From inside she can just as easily take orders and such, especially since the man inside preparing the food has to pause what he is doing to ring up a card transaction. I've seen three people work inside before and it is fine. This needs to happen with Uncle Lau's. It's a bit annoying for the poor lady out front to be reorganizing the sodas while people wait so long for their food. Good thing their teriyaki chicken was so tender and flavorful. Add in a healthy serving of black beans and I feel light and happy with my lunch choice. Last time I had Uncle Lau's I didn't wait nearly as long. For this reason I will give them a pass but this could have been very very bad.... read more

We ordered: - Shrimp Scampi (mild) $7 - came with 6 jumbo Shrimps and 2 scoops of rice - Loco Moco $7 - came with a hamburger patty, 2 scoops of rice, a fried egg and gravy The mild scampi was spicier than I expected. Maybe I caught this food truck on the wrong day or maybe I ordered the wrong things? I've been craving sweet potato fries for the past month, so when it came to decide which food truck- Uncle Lau's or The Bun Truck- to choose at the Gourmet Music Carnival, I went with Uncle Lau's. I regret my decision...very much. I asked them before I ordered how the sweet potato fries were. They told me they were "very good" "crispy" crinkly-cut fries the width of a person's finger. I was sold. I also got the BBQ Beef Brisket Slider because I think I misinterpreted the lady telling me that there was an $8 minimum for credit cards (?)...maybe she said $0.80 fee. Either way, I wasted $8 on food that I threw away after a few bites (which I rarely do). Sweet Potato Fries- Most were soggy, oily, and (worst) undercooked. A few fries were burnt, but still were undercooked. This may be due to the thickness of the fries. I don't know, but I was disappointed. I don't even want sweet potato fries anymore...except really yummy ones that are full of crunchy yet fluffy goodness. BBQ Beef Brisket- Thin slices of fatty beef brisket drenched in sweet BBQ sauce, served on a toasted slider bun. The meat was kind of cold, the bun was average, the BBQ sauce was really sweet (and usually, I love sweet BBQ). Some of the meat slices were lukewarm/cold which added to my sadness. After reluctantly eating a few fries, a few slices of the meat and a bite of the bun, I waved my white flag and forfeited. I don't remember the last time I did that with food. I'm so sad. I don't know if it's because of the Brady Bunch's cursed Tiki Idol, but it does seem like Island food seems to be a rare thing around these parts. The whole Tiki theme sort of went out the door in the last few decades. Yeah, you have your Tiki Hut and Bahooka's, but let's face it, not all things Tiki need to give you a bowl of alcohol, they should be able to give you some good quality Islander food.. without having to go to that stupid Island's Burger joint. And while it is generally a tiki sounding name, I don't count Trader Joe's as anything like that.. save for a few of their locations. But enter Uncle Lau's into the mix. Sure, it won't get you drunk like Tiki Hut will, but they will satisfy your hunger. Their pulled pork with cole slaw is something to be believed. The option of a rice bowl is always a positive, especially when they give you so many choices in toppings. Since I'm a shrimp head, the shrimp scampi in spicey form sort of reminds me of a very strange Killer Shrimp style meal in itself. Only without all the butter and what not. Now if you want to walk on the wild side, they do have a spam and egg burger. How more islander can you get than by getting some delicious spam off a truck? The service was fairly quick even with a couple of customers before me. So you have to be thankful for that. read more

Pass... I walked up to the truck eager to try their offerings of Hawaiian food. Having a pleasant experience with a different Hawaiian food truck, I decided to give this one a try. Unfortunately, it was not what I was expecting. FIrst of all, who I presume is the manager of the truck, was just yapping away on his cell phone loudly while there were a few people in front of the truck waiting to order. Instead of ending the call or saying anything about how to order or whatnot he keeps yapping, leaving the customers confused. There was only one cook in the truck and she ended up having to take orders. So the one cook is taking orders while cooking at the same time, with manager still on the phone. When the food is ready, the manager is still talking on the phone while handing out the ready food and even collecting money without any communication except for the one he's having with whoever is on the other line of the cell phone. Rude and awkward service is one thing. But another thing, is terrible food. I had an order of Chicken Katsu (with curry) that sounded delicious. Unfortunately, not. Katsu breading was overcooked, but SOME OF THE CHICKEN WAS STILL PINK/RAW. I don't have to go on about why this is so bad. Next, was the mediocre curry that was really salty without much flavor. Then the macaroni salad that was really bad, drenched in some sort of thick mayo sauce. Ugh. I won't recommend this truck at all... read more

Love this truck. I have the sticker on my desk at Hulu. I've had the pulled pork sandwich and the kalbi rib taco. Both are outstanding. At 7 for the sandwich plus a side or 2 dollars for a taco, this truck is a great deal. Top notch quality. A nice change up from the typical korean BBQ tacos, Uncle Lau's has a unique flavor. I got their beef brisket. It was ok. Not super tender, not super anything, but ok. If I have choices, I'd probably skip this one.

I don't know why I thought this truck would be more Chinese than "Island." I mean, they got a freakin' tiki painted on the side of the truck. For the Silver Lake Jubilee, they were basically only offering their sliders and fries. Pulled pork- lots of mayo-y cole slaw. Pork was pretty good, tiny bit too salty. Korean Kalbi- lots of beef, very tender. Definitely the winner. The only problem was the buns were horrible. They should have used Hawaiian rolls but I suppose those rolls are too small? Odd. I found these other people's ratings quite odd. Uncle Lau is an OG from Hawaii. Total Pidgin when you talk to him. He's cool, relaxed, and he got stuff on that ain't even on the menu. I got Chili-cheese fries. It was a bit expensive.. $3.50 but t'was good. It's seasoned fries with chili and cheese. Almost taste's link Pink's fries, except, no American cheese.. it was Nacho cheese, I believe. TOday, I had the Quesadilla. Talk about generous portions of chicken and cheese in that 5 dollar deal. Yesterday, I had the Lahaina chicken burrito. I was quite scared as I normally avoid rice in my burrito, but I never knock it till I try it. I tried it. Perfect portion of rice. It's there just to balance out the guac and other delicious things tossed in there. If anything at all, the rice felt like just another piece of tortilla on one side instead of the normal gut truck scam of making 3/4s of the burrito rice. I like uncle Lau and his steak fries were a steal for 5 bux. If you're a real hawaiian and can speak pidgin, I challenge you to challenge me that he ain't the real deal. lol Good man, good food, fair price, quit cryin' about the card charge. Uncle Lau's came to Glendale a few days ago. Apparently he was dipping his toe into the Disney/Dreamworks campus market. Good for him, I hope he keeps coming back. The food was really good. The pulled pork wasn't smothered but still had a ton of flavor and was pretty tender. The BBQ Beef Brisket was probably the BEST BBQd anything I've ever had and I lived in the South for a stretch. Super tender, moist and lip smacking delicious. I got the slider meal which comes with a side and as a personal preference I got the sweet potato fries. They were good, really good. Although putting them into a to go box kind of kills the fried goodness on the outside. Overall, I liked it a lot. Perhaps a little salt on the fries, perhaps a sweet or savory topping and I would have given 5 stars. Keep coming back to Glendale Uncle Lau! read more

Ok. For food taste/quality/portion alone, I will give them 3 stars, as it was pretty alright. Nothing fancy, but not bad either. I had Korean Kalbi Rice Bowl. Then one might ask why only 1 Star? Because, what I got was not Korean Kalbi in my Korean Kalbi Rice Bowl. It is BBQ Beef at best, but the meat is definitely not Galbi - Korean Short Rib meat. I work nearby "Food Truck Alley" and fancy myself a food truck fanatic. Being n Hawaiian transplant, in LA, I was excited when I saw Uncle Laus and eager to try some of this "island bbq." Please notice my use of quotations. The menu confused me and should've been my first indication that I was about to order the worst attempt at chicken teriyaki of my life - and an embarrassment for island food. But, I decided to trudge on and order the item I felt was the least possible mess-up-able. My chicken teriyaki bowl was delivered with pico de gallo and black beans. This is where my confusion stemmed from on the menu. I mean - Really? What about that even sounds good? And I'm not sure if Uncle Lau has ever been to Hawaii but it will be a cold day in Hawaii nei if pico de gallo and black beans were ever served side by side with Hawaiian food. Authenticity aside, I can definitely appreciate some fusion food. But this combination didn't even taste good. The pico de gallo sauce soaked up most of my rice giving it a soggy texture and onion taste, the black beans also soaked through the rice and altogether flooded my bowl with a cornucopia of stank. The chicken teriyaki itself was mediocre at best. It tasted like a too-sweet sesame based sauce my college roommate used to buy and quickly boil his chicken in. How do you mess up one of the easiest Asian - not Hawaiian - dishes there is? Uncle Laus found a way. It seemed like other patrons were ordering the brisket sliders and while that might be a better option, there is no way I will find myself ordering at this truck again due to my very dissapointing experience. read more

I used to work in the buildings right where this truck parks. I LOVE THIS TRUCK and I love OG Uncle Lau -- he's so chill and yeah maybe he's hard to understand sometimes but hey, it's all good. It's cute and endearing Hawaii lingo. Never ever ever had I ever had a better breakfast burrito. Take it from me, I grew up in Socal with the BEST Mexican food. Burritos are my favorite food. The Lahaina Chicken Burrito is not bad-- it's pretty good but let me tell you... the breakfast burrito is off the chain and two levels above this burrito. So can you imagine? This is one food item I get unnecessarily enthusiastic about. The breakfast burrito is not on the menu so it's considered a special request. I live about 20 min away and everyday, i want to drive over just so i can buy a breakfast burrito. Try it, and you will be amazed. PS. Another food truck that had a great location at OC Foodie fest. This island girl loves Hawaiian food, and thankfully someone in our group stepped over to Uncle Lau's BBQ while we were waiting at Buttermilk truck. AMAZING....the tender brisket slider and wonderfully cooked pulled pork sliders were amazing. I'm still drooling thinking about these sliders. This was before I had the breakfast sliders from Buttermilk truck. It totally hit the spot because it was a great fusion mix of Hawaiian-Korean food. These guys were at the Taco Cinema, as well, so I finally got a chance to taste them. We got a pulled pork slider. Honestly, I don't know anything about Island food, but the meat was very well cooked and had a really good taste. I admit, I am used to pulled pork being slathered in BBQ sauce so I was surprised when this was not. But that turned out to be a good thing because I was actually able to taste the meat. I will try this truck again if I come across it again. I would love to try the Loco Moco or the shrimp. read more

I like the hawaiian fusion idea...until it's fused with Korean. Is anyone else getting tired of Korean BBQ-something or other? Geez. I opted for the burger instead of the tacos: it was DELISH! I am not a fan of teriyaki in general so I decided to get the Maui burger and asked for pineapple additionally: very good. The sweet potato fries are straight from a freezer, nothing fancy. It is a food truck..expect to wait to order your food and receive your food unless you arrive 20 minutes before the truck arrives and stand and wait for them to pull alongside you. 2. Since it is a food truck, they may only have 1 or 2 people cooking. 3. It is a food truck..whadya want????!!! Now, a coworker (thanks KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTT) actually brought back my helpings. I got the shrimp scampi (spicy). It was awesome!!! The right amount of spice and sauce and you get 4 or 5 huge shrimp and two balls of rice for $8. I went to the Long Beach Street Food Festival yesterday and tried their sliders... Their Kalbi (beef topped with Kimchi) slider was THE BEST thing I ate at the festival! The meat was soooo flavourful, and the spicy kimchi ontop killed it for me! They even took the time to grill the bun..how thoughtful =) read more

I tried their stuff at the Long Beach street food fest. Their sliders were $4 each-- maybe a bit high, maybe not. Their sweet potato fries were crinkle cut, giving them more crispiness, but overall they were still lacking in that extra flavor. Their pulled pork was good, but was not as juicy as I would have hoped. Coleslaw on the pulled pork is a classic topping to add a crisp bite to it-- I was glad they included this and that eased my mind over the $4 price tag per slider. They were fairly fast with their service-- it always adds time when someone pays with a credit card for a $7 ticket at the food truck when you know they are using a wireless credit card machine, so they were going as fast as they could. Overall, it's good and I would go back. They weren't my favorite, but the sweet potato fries hit the spot for my craving. read more

this is just one more reason why i love food trucks. came here for lunch when it was parked in santa monica and i was fully satisfied with my maui burger. guac, swiss cheese, and a big fat burger patty was exactly what i wanted. after second thought, i think next time im going to have to try the pulled beef brisket sandwich because that looked great as well. the fries were great...they were very reminiscent of this old diner's fries that i had a long time ago back up in the bay...basically it's a cross between seasoned fries and regular fries that are cooked to a crisp and it's great. so...delicious burger + a side of fries for $7 is a great deal for me! demolished the burger and the fries and felt fully satisfied =] food trucks ftw! read more

The food is decent, but the fact that they sneak this in is horrendous. @unclelausbbq I think I need to retry this truck but I almost never see it around the Valley or El Segundo. Problem is I can't remember what I tried here. I know I did try something. But either the Alzheimer's is setting or I had too much fun in the 60's because it's just not coming to me and I'm looking at their menu. So why the 3 star rating? Well I don't remember disliking it and the fact that I can't remember says something in and of itself. I do remember the people being very nice. Uncle Lau's truck has been coming fairly consistently to the Glendale/Disney/Dreamworks area as of last October and I've tried a number items on the menu. Pulled Pork Slider - a little dry Korean Ribs Slider - a little chewy Loco Moco(beef) - pretty good, gravy is not too salty Lahaina Chicken burrito - very tasty, lots of flavors in a tortilla. I'm an Oahu transplant, so I think I should have a decent palate for Hawaiian food. If you're stuck at work with nowhere to get a quick bite, Uncle Lau's truck can fill that Hawaiian food gap. One of my former coworkers is a real-life relative of Uncle Lau. The man is his actual uncle. But, due to this coworker not eating at the truck, Uncle Lau disavows any knowledge of this coworker. Tis sad. Very good food. I miss a good spam loco moco, and the food this truck churns out reminds me of the best Hawaiian restaurants in the SF Bay Area--I know, not a good reference point, but what am I gonna do? several issues... first, the wait is incredibly long. second, if the food was great, it would've been worth it... but no, the food was only so-so. As a previous reviewer pointed out, the "kalbi" slider was not made of "Korean Short Rib Meat- Galbi" the name is quite misleading. to make matters worse, the "kalbi" was actually a piece of really tough bbq beef. In light of all the nice reviews, I think what is really taking place is that this food truck is taking advantage of the fact that it is, well, a food truck. People are hungry and less demanding when it comes to a not-in-a-restaurant setting. They make you wait for it, and when people are hungry is always seems to be better tasting, as I witnessed my fellow patrons swarming over the food truck tonight. what makes it even worse on top of all that? they do accept credit cards but they don't tell you that they charge you a LOT for it (well at least until you sign the receipt and notice the additional charge anyway). LOVE the spam loco moco. Never had a loco moco in my life until now and I AM IN LOVE. White rice topped with 3 thick slices of spam, two fried eggs, and lots of gravy! DELISH! I've always wanted to try some of the other menu items but always end up ordering the loco moco because I just cannot resist. read more

Many of the over-hyped food trucks out there are kind of a rip-off. If I'm going to have to stand on the sidewalk and eat my food, it better be either really tasty or a great deal - ideally both. Uncle Lau's is one of the few that fits the bill. The fries are delicious and nicely seasoned. Beef brisket BBQ sandwich is sweet, salty, and fatty - a little bit of everything good in life. Pulled pork is less satisfying in quality, meat was a bit too fatty and gristly for me, and the bread tasted a bit stale. They offer crinkle cut sweet potato fries, or regular fries with a tasty seasoning. Decent sandwich, big enough portion to save the rest for dinner. One thumb up. read more

The worst food truck service EVER!!!!!! I waited 40+ minutes for my food, and the Kalbi Bowl is not worth the $10. The portion is so small, it's only big enough for your pets. read more

you guys werent too bad. i enjoyed eating the pulled pork slider with the slaw and the sweet potato fries at the foodie fest in anaheim. i have to check out the other items on the menu next time i see the truck around in la. hopefully soon coz i love me some hawaiian food. read more

Yum yum and more yum. This was the last truck we stopped by at the OC Foodie Fest. The line wasn't long at all so it was a win win situation. We ordered the pulled pork and kalbi rolls. The pulled pork was flavored well and the kalbi came with delicious kim chee. I'm not usually down for kim chee, but damn...there was legit especially with the kalbi. The bread was nothing super special, just a roll, but it really went well with the meat. It absorbed all the yummy meat juices just how i like it. I heard their watermelon juice is really good too, but unfortunately they ran out. Definitely wanna visit them again, just gotta stock more of that watermelon juice. read more

I tried this truck for the first and last time today. the food wasn't horrible, but it was nothing to write home about. i tried the Maui burger and the pulled pork sandwich. also the sweet potato fries. those really let me down, i thought they'd be homemade. the guava and cappuccino drinks are tasty but for 2 bucks, too expensive. and the wait was way too long. read more
