A friend picked this and we came as a group. I have to say, I am not big on fried chicken or southern home cooked meal, but I still enjoyed myself here. Hubby and I weren't sure what to expect but we figured we would try some stuff. We ended up getting the 7 piece white breast meat, half homestyle and half spicy. I am sadly not a fan of the sauce but I was pretty impressed with the homestyle. It became clear quickly that 7 was way too much with all the sides and everything all together. I managed to eat one and I think hubby managed his three. So we could have been fine with just three homestyle. I had the okra, which was good but tasted like the same stuff I get at Walmart. The corn nuggets were unarguably the best side of the day. The fried pickles were the oddest but they weren't terrible. All in all, I couldn't see myself coming back unless I was with a group as I just never crave this type of food. Still, I guess if I did I wouldn't mind coming back here. I don't even know how to talk about Uncle Lou's. If you're expecting a delicious blend of fried foods and a wonderfully local atmosphere, look no further than Uncle Lou's. There's really nothing fancy about this place. You walk in, see some tables, lots of people and a giant menu with quick snapshots of each item for easy pickin'. Of course, if you head to Uncle Lou's it would seem rather silly if you didn't order the chicken. It would be like going to a brewery and not trying the beer. It's just ridiculous to think about. I picked up the two piece meal coated in the delightfully named "Sweet Spicy Love" sauce. I also had to pick up the the deep-fried corn nuggets, as it is known you cannot eat a fried entree without a fried side. We waited patiently in the wings for a table to open up (the place gets uber crowded come lunch time), but the staff was very diligent about cleaning tables quickly and getting you seated ASAP. The wait wasn't very long and before I knew it, I was digging into a flurry of chicken and nuggets like a velociraptor after a hunger strike. I was drunk with plump, juicy pieces of chicken and sauce that was literally finger-lickin' good. And don't even get me started on the biscuit. Let's just say I shoulda put a ring on it. Maybe I'm a little late getting in on this place (Thanks, Trevor!), but wow, better late than never. This is some special chicken. Gus's, you've been served. Besides a cratered parking lot that would blend nicely in circa-1989 Beirut (don't be fooled, hood newbies: the locals usually only carry small arms around here), the first thing you'll notice is that Lou's has been on Food Network. There's a reminder in every sightline on the property. It's in the windows. It's on the food trucks. It's on the cups. More commentary on that later. Even at 2:00pm on a Friday, there was a solid crowd, and I probably waited ~15 minutes for food. Don't stop in here in a time crunch expecting Taco Bell. Your food will be made to order. Trust me, this is a good thing. I ordered the three piece dark meat chicken meal (prepared "hot") with "corrupted carrots" as my side. My meal was SOLID. The mega-moist chicken is extraordinary. The hot version combined a perfect mix of slowly-building heat with a nice sweet front end. I dug into one of the thighs, and I could see what looked like brown sugar collected under the skin. Hey, no one's claiming this is health food. When I left (safely, I might add), I noticed my lips were tingling nicely from the sauce. The carrots were a pleasant surprise (unlike Gus's tepid sides). I'm pretty sure the carrots are fried (watch it, they come out hot!) in a dry rub-like mix of spices, ruining my intention of picking the "healthier" side dish. I got over it, because they were great. I further corrupted them with the Ranch dressing that came with the meal. The serving was enough for two folks easily. But the icing on the cake at Uncle Lou's is the biscuit. OH, THE BISCUIT. Unbelievable. After sitting in the sauce... words fail. In some twisted way, I suspect that Lou's biscuits are somehow behind the disproportionate crime in South Memphis. They're sure worth defending with your life... I will be back. Featured on Fieri's Diners, Dives, and Drive-Ins - and happy to make the fact known both in-store and on their mobile "Fried Chicken. Burgers, and Hot Wings" truck parked outside - suffice it to say that Uncle Lou's fits the second noun quite well and although not particularly 'dingy' the space could certainly use a good scrub down and sprucing up, some adverse GI symptoms experienced later that day not guaranteed to be related, but certainly not helped by a bathroom I'd not recommend visiting, nor a kitchen that all but forced some "sweet and spicy love" atop the dark meat portion of our plate. Finding a seat with relative ease, the white walled restaurant soon to fill and generate a line nearly stretching out the door, it was after perhaps ten minutes that food arrived and although the coating surrounding the bird was indeed quite crispy and well-spiced the obviously pre-frozen poultry itself was largely lacking in flavor, a fact likely responsible for the suggestion of sauce that was a bit too sweet and far less fiery than I had originally feared. Ignoring the potato salad as the smell alone was far too mustard-laden for my taste, it was onward to biscuits and fritters of cream corn that the tasting progressed, and with both offering soft, piping-hot centers tinged with sweetness offset by golden exterior crunch there was nary a bad bite to be found, the same to be said of two small handpies from a nearby baker that were suggested in place of missing cakes and pudding, the pecan perhaps a bit too heavy in filler while the coconut came across surprisingly natural with a creamy custard center that could easily have been featured as the base of a very elegant slice somewhere more refined. read more

Best chicken in the south! Better yet.... The U.S.! I visit memphis 3x per year and I grab this chicken on the way in and on the way out. I can't get enough. It's always a family experience for us. We go and order about 50 pieces of chicken and go to town! They never fail! The chicken: seasoned and fried perfectly, we always get it dipped in the sauce and that makes it even more awesome. I can't explain how this sauce tastes but it's a must have. Even the chicken tenders are amazing. Very very far from ordinary! The sides: the potato salad tastes like my grandmother made it. The fries, corn nuggets, and onion rings are also must haves. They compliment the chicken very well. HOW COULD I FORGET THE HONEY BISCUITS!!! Get more than you think you need. The best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm from Memphis and I grew up not far from Uncle Lou's but I hadn't heard of it until a couple of years ago. On a recent trip home, I stopped by and ordered some chicken to go with a side of corn nuggets. The restaurant is located in a shopping complex and decked out with pictures of Guy Fieri's visit and the food network logo. Clearly they are quite proud of the recognition that they received on TV. The place was also appointed with some Grizzlies and Cowboys paraphernalia and the typical fixins of a fried chicken joint including a roll of paper towels at each table. Despite a quoted 10-15 minute wait, the food was ready in about 5 minutes and both the cashier and the guy who handed me the chicken were very pleasant. In fact, to my delight, he even threw in an extra piece of chicken! The dark meat was moist and well-seasoned but the crunch of great fried chicken was nonexistent secondary to the drenching in the sweet, spicy, love sauce. Don't get me wrong, the sauce was good but next time I'll probably get it on the side for dipping purposes. The corn nuggets that accompanied the chicken were fried and sweet, two things that I love! They tasted like corn pudding bites and dipping them into the sweet, spicy, love sauce gave them a little kick to juxtapose the extreme sweetness. This place was a hit for me. The counter dude was funny and sweet as heck and pretty much told me what I will be ordering when I walked up to the counter. Ok, why not. You know your food better than I. Sides we ordered and tried were fried pickles and corrupted carrots. Carrots had the cleverest name but we're over-fried little carrot pieces like you buy at a store for snacks. Then dusted heavily with their season salt. Ok, we tried and they died. Pickles were lightly breaded and fried, but were so soggy with fryer oil so the greasy texture took away from what otherwise would be decent and tasty fried pickles. We went through a lot of paper towels from the roll centered on our and all the other tables. Lips burning and fingers well coated with hot sauce I went into a bathroom that I can honestly call disgusting. The minute I entered the doors, I have never felt so welcomed. After letting them know that it was our first time there, they were very informative in explaining the menu to us. We ordered the regular fried chicken and the one drenched in sweet love spicy sauce. While both versions of the chicken tasted good, I especially loved the one with the sauce. Even though it is "spicy", I would say it is more on the mild side for me. The honey dipped biscuits were a good complement to the fried chicken as well the fries. Do sprinkle some of their special seasoning onto the fries to give them an extra dose of flavor. Cole slaw is also a good choice for a side. Had the spicy chicken strips today and can't stop thinking about them! We found this place while on a road trip. We used Google to find Food Network recommended places in Memphis. As usual they did not disappoint. Uncle Lou's had been featured on Diners, Drive-in's, and Dives as well as The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Uncle Lou's is unlike any fried chicken I have ever tasted. It does not have the batter heavy crunchy coating that many have. This instead was a nice tender coating that just sealed in the moisture and heavenly spices of Lou's great grandma's recipe. This 4 generation old secret recipe has just enough kick and will leave you wanting to make another road trip just to get it. There is a sweet heat that is clearly a mixture of Tabasco and honey. As for the rest of the secret. I don't know, but he can keep it as long as he keeps serving it up! We tried the mild chicken strips and honey butter biscuits. We also enjoyed fried okra and corn nugget sides. All were pretty great! That biscuit...Oh My Gosh GOOD!!! I also had the opportunity to chat with Lou, who founded and runs the place with his little staff daily. This guy is the fried chicken shack OG. Super nice and friendly, with a low gravely voice and a warm sincere smile. If you meet Lou, it is clear he loves what he does and is grateful to be able to do his it. He chatted with several customers and we talked Dallas Cowboys football because he had a Cowboys clock on the wall. As for the ambiance of the restaurant, don't bother worrying about that. You can just walk in and order and get it To Go. The place is in a little shopping strip and it is little more than a waiting room to get your food. There are a few little tables scattered around inside and 3 outside, but not a lot of reason to sit and eat unless you are chatting with Lou or just can't wait to devour that food. Bottom line. Eat here if you get the chance. You will love it! And, if you don't eat here, well you will probably kick yourself for not stopping. read more

Uncle Lou's was the first place I stopped for lunch after picking up my rental car. Since this was my first time, I reviewed the menu and wanted to stick with the wings... I had few questions before I ordered and they sensed that I was first timer and helped me with my questions. I went with 4 pcs wings, half and half on the sauce with cole slow and extra order of corn nuggets. Topped that off with Diet Coke. I got my food and divided right into their biscuit - not worth it... the biscuit itself was dry. I wasn't sure how hot the hot was, but if I could, I'm going to request the hot sauce in my drink cup next time so I can drink it! There is no hot hot flavor to the sauce, it's very sweet and mild sauce, yet the sauce's color is red... I mean, I could eat this all day... I was not a fan of the mild one... go for the hot when you order. The cole slaw was creamy, not bad... their corn nugget was okay... maybe its because I had to go up there and remind them of my order, when it came out, the nuggets were cold. There are many signs up of Guy Fieri's visit for DDD (food network) from what I'd guess was many years ago due to how faded the signs were. The food may have been great in those days, but it must have went downhill. Uncle Lou walks around greeting everyone, and he's a wonderful gentleman who was very friendly. Now for the food: the wings were pretty thin, with far too many feathers still sticking to the skin. There are only two flavors of sauce; mild and hot. "Regular" means no sauce. My friend got mild sauce, said it was a little vinegary. The corn nuggets were pretty tasty. With so many restaurants offering wings, I don't know if I'd get mine from Uncle Lou.
