I hosted a holiday brunch at my house today and decided to serve an avocado toast bar using Uncle Matt's sourdough and multigrain breads. They were both an absolute hit. With the leftovers we ended up using the bread for "breakfast for dinner" egg sandwiches. The loaves of bread are fresh and mighty. For an additional dollar the staff will pre slice the bread. Coffee was also excellent. We have tried their croissants on other occasions and were enamored by their flavor and flakiness. We love supporting this local business! read more

Love the bread here! First time getting a sandwich and it was pretty good! I went on a Friday afternoon and there was barely any people there but I waited over 15min for the sandwich. There was also no acknowledgment that it was taking a long time from the staff. The section to wait is also where people eat so it gets crowded and feels awkward to stand there. Great pastries, staff has strange customer service vibes, as they are soo quiet and didn't greet us as we walked in the door, which is kinda strange when entering a cafe, but whatever, they weren't rude, and we needed coffee bad. Instead, they made our drinks perfectly and sold us amazing pastries. Lots of room in the other rooms, not as much in the front of the store. Stopped in here recently with my wife, first time visitor. Amazing pastry case full of top notch baked goods. We each ordered a coffee and a pastrami and egg sandwich. I opted for a plain coffee with cream my wife got a latte of some kind. I was very surprised at the quality of the coffee, would go back here again just for that. Wow, what an absolute hidden gem! This beautiful little cafe is serving up some of most sensational treats I've enjoyed in Connecticut. I am always on the hunt for a good hazelnut latte that doesn't taste sickly sweet and Uncle Matt's really delivered a rich, velvety, and decadent version that I finished before I started my car. The croissants were perfect and flaky and my breakfast sandwich was everything I could have dreamed of. The staff members were all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, providing exquisite customer service with a smile. This is a cute little cafe/bakery in downtown newtown. They have outdoor and indoor seating so it's great place to sit and eat on a nice day. I just ordered via their takeout app (Toast) and got everything on time and as ordered. They even called when they had run out of bagels asking what we'd like as a replacement. The bacon egg and cheese is tasty, the bacon was cooked well done and was not skimped out on. The yogurt parfait comes with strawberries, blueberries, granola and honey. The yogurt had an interesting texture that makes me think it was made in house since it was so fluffy. We also got the cinnamon raisin bread, which you can have unsliced or sliced. The slices are nice and thick and the bread is not super sweet, but with plenty of raisins. Each sandwich comes with homemade potato chips-these were good, not overly salty or greasy, but crispy. The smoked salmon avocado toast was ok, a little lacking in the avocado. Husband also got the curry chicken wrap and enjoyed that. Will definitely come back again when in the area. read more

Everyone loves to rave about the quality of overpriced food items, as if to justify their paying too much for a mini roll claiming to be a bagel. The location is nice-it is on the main road going into Sandy Hook, with decent parking since it's open during earlier hours (Sandy Hook gets tricky in the afternoons and evenings). The logo is puzzling (orange, blac, and basic) and does not give the customer a sense of what to expect (I was expecting a hot dog joint the first time). The interior is fairly basic, and that's not a complaint. For a bakery, less is more. There is a little indoor, self-seating, and outdoors as well. The building has a mature landscape that makes for a private setting even though it's on the main road. I realize there are premium ingredients being used in the items crafted here, but despite all the upper middle-class, housewife fanfare, my friends and I find the food underwhelming. While perhaps some can justify the price of the items, there is nothing we've tried here that is so spectacular that we are dying to throw our money into the register. If we want to linger over a nice coffee in a setting more calming and less frenetic than Starbucks, this is a great option. Just eat before you go and save your money for the coffee. read more

Other than the food being overly priced and very small portions, it was so uncomfortably hot that I was sweating and opted to leave instead of finishing our breakfast. I was really bummed out because I had been in a few times to take some pastries to go which never did disappoint, however the portion was pathetic and unjustifiable to pay $40 for dry eggs and less than caring customer service. The place is adorable and cozy, just much too cozy on an extremely hot day. Too bad the rest doesn't match up. It's a sad shame. read more

Typically, I'll get regular baked goods and are completely satisfied with the product. However, today I decided to order two gluten-free blueberry cakes for someone in the household with a gluten allergy. They are roughly the size of a drakes cake coffee cake. As well, I ordered an everything bagel. The total came out to $16.83. The bagels are $2.50 so You do the math to determine the cost of those bite-size gluten-free cakes. I find this completely unreasonable and unfriendly towards anyone with a gluten allergy. The bagel is $2.50... The bagel was not up to par to what it usually is. Again, I'm leaving 4 stars because my only gripe is the price. read more

The bread and baked goods are delicious, the staff is friendly and it's probably the best coffee place around but I can't give five stars because the interior is very run down and not in a shabby chic way in a there's insulating foam falling out of the fireplace way. This place usually sells out and stays busy so it's unclear why they can't invest a little bit in the overall cleanliness and aesthetic of the place. Stopped in for lunch on Saturday. Got the eggplant sandwich with fries, angry bird sandwich and a chocolate chip cookie. Both sandwiches were good, nothing crazy or over the top but great bread and a solid sandwich. The fries left something to be desired. They somehow were very overcooked and dark yet sooooo soggy at the same time. I don't even know how that happens. The chocolate chip cookie was the biggest disappointment. It was super dry, had a weird taste to it and barely any chocolate. I do agree with most of the other reviews that the prices are way too high. Probably won't be returning. read more

Uncle Matt's is overall overpriced. It takes a long time so preordering is kind of the move. I only really go for the breakfast sandwiches. Went once for some cookies and treats to bring to a party and they just weren't good. First it was like $4 per rainbow cookie and they were actually terrible. Super dry. And didn't even taste like a traditional rainbow cookie. Also got a dirt bomb. Literally as dry as a dirt bomb would be. The macarons were decent but that's about it. Afraid to spend the money to try other things. It all just really isn't worth the price. read more

The staff is friendly and helpful -- when I was delayed in picking up an iced coffee I had ordered, they called me -- and then remade it when I arrived! Picked up our weekly loaf of sourdough, so good with fresh pesto. Also a loaf of rye bread, a danish to go and just on impulse a custard and peach pie. Everything is so good. The custard is so rich and creamy, with just a touch of caramelized sugar on top. The peaches added the perfect sweetness to finish off the flavors. I highly recommend any and all baked goods, along with a medium dark coffee with cream on Saturday morning. read more

Eggs were tasteless and hastily cooked, burnt bacon and not quality cheddar. $9.50 was too expensive for bagel and lox served. Should have said something then but didn't.
