THIS REVIEW ISN'T BASED ON FOOD! I stopped in for lunch because I was stationed in the area and aside from there not being many soul food spots in this town, this place had decent reviews. I went in and asked for a drink (which they didn't have because its apparently seasonal but doesn't specify that on the menu) I then asked for an item on the menu and again was told they didn't have it..... it was 1:30p in the afternoon and not a single other person was in this restaurant. Oddly Uncle Ralston's was recommended to me by the salesman who sold my mother her new car a few months back. Always interested in new food experiences, I bookmarked Uncle Ralston's for future reference. Finally had a chance to stop by and nearly missed it as it's a small restaurant tucked away in a side street. When walking in it's obvious the restaurant is setup pretty much as a take-out business as seating is limited to 5-6 stools lined along one wall of the restaurant with a small counter. Don't take that moniker of a "take-out" restaurant as a negative as the food was delicious and worth any tight seating arrangements or inconveniences. Started off with two starters in the ubiquitous beef patty and the Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese. Beef patty was solid; crispy golden flaky shell with a mildly spiced beef filling. The Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese was delicious. The mac and cheese was creamy, breaded nicely, and fried to a golden crispy shell. The only negative was that I really couldn't discern any chicken in the mac & cheese. I had the BBQ jerk chicken lunch special and it was an absolute bargain at $6. BBQ jerk chicken was on point; spicy and tangy, and the BBQ sauce added a nice sweet flavor that just paired well with the jerk seasoning. Served with your choice of vegetable (chose collard greens), starch (I chose rice and peas), and a drink; it was a pretty sizable container of food and three nice chicken pieces were provided. My sister enjoyed the oxtail lunch special and like my dish it was both tasty (she gave me some pieces to try) and a generous portion. I have ordered a number of times from Uncle Ralstons on Grub Hub and they cancelled my orders about 20-30 minujtes after I ordered. The last time they lied and said that it was a $15 miniumum when it was $10 on the site. Then when I asked for the owner she admitted that they had no drivers. If they don't have drivers they should not be taking Grub Hub orders. They should not lie to customers. It would be better if they cancelled right away. You waid 30 minutes when your hungry, find out your food isn't coming and have to do it all over again. They offered nothign for the problem and delay just make excuses and lie. My wife and i were so excited that a new place opened in our town and on top of that a Jamaican choice. Thats as far as our excitement got. Visit one or attempted visit one. Called ahead for dinner at 630pm on a Saturday. Was ordering the sampler, bbq jerk chicken and bbq ribs. Well for a Saturday night in freehold nj and being located on main street where there is a ton of traffic, they were not prepared and only had fish, shrimp and fried chicken left. 3 of the four sampler items were not available nor was the ribs or jerk chicken. We didn't find this out till we finished the order and the woman on the phone started reading us our order back. A guy in the back had to say they were out of most of the menu. No "im sorry", no explanation or anything. Just ok when we said never mind. Visit two. We decided to go in person and earlier in the day only to be greeted by a rude woman and that was after we stood there a good 10 mins with no "can i take your order". So we order fried chicken and ribs.......no ribs!!!! So instead we got jerk chicken. Jerk chicken was just ok and the fried chicken was dry and zero taste. Avoid if you can. Delivery was speedy and even received a call after order was placed informing us of certain items they didn't have so we can substitute. Even placed a side order of Sweet Potato Fries......Servings were plentiful all around and could not finish, so I've just finished my leftover lunch as I write this review.....EXCELLENT. The storefront is small and more of a take-out place with a few seats at a counter top.....no frills, but don't fret, the food was delicious and not found in Freehold OR anywhere in the area.... Ordered the ox tails and can see why one commented that it was dry because some of the meat was above the sauce in the pan and was drying out. A little bland and again, I would prefer it more spicy. We had the: Fried chicken - decent, 3.5 stars. Not dried out, even after reheating in the microwave. Angry jerk chicken, delicious, I wish it was a bit spicier. BBQ jerk chicken - my favorite. This is one of my favorite takeout spots in Freehold! I've had a chance to indulge in a variety of items on their menu, but it's the Angry Jerk chicken that keeps me coming every Friday for lunch. For me their jerk chicken rates in the top 5 best jerk chicken dishes I've ever had...and I've had my share of jerked prepared meats. Their seasonings hit every flavor note required in a well-prepared/marinated jerk dish. I personally do not believe that jerk meats should be served any other way besides SPICEY. That's genuine jerk and their jerk chicken is deliciously spiced while maintaining its juiciness. What more could a girl who's in love with Jamaican food ask for? Where to begin. I started going here for the jerk chicken, collard greens, and Mac n cheese. I love this meal it hits every spot and the jerk isn't shy. I never tried ox tails before so one day I ordered them. Well.. I fell in love lol I figured this was so good let me try more. Next was the fried fish. Then the red snapper. I've experienced better at this restaurant! The first time we visited this place it was late so the selection was limited and we understood. The Mac n Cheese was better than any I have ever had before and I myself make great Mac n cheese! I love oxtail and the first time they managed to give me a reasonable portion for the $$. The last time we went there, the mac n cheese tasted like left overs from 3 days ago, dry/bottom of the barrel! They gave me 4 pieces of oxtails and felt that was acceptable! I was not present at the time but was disgusted when I sat down to enjoy my meal. Both my husband and I are very good cooks. We enjoy good food and thought we had found a pleasant change from the usual ... when we are too tired or lacking time to cook. I was so offended, I have not returned since. I called to discuss this, asked for the manager, the woman on the phone said she was the manager ... and did not seem the least bit interested or concerned. I expressed my desire to support their business and she stated they" would not lose business over their macaroni and cheese." They lost this business ... 5 customers in my household alone and everyone I share this experience with. I work in an industry where I must do "backflips" to WOW the customer ... then to be treated with such ill regard is quite offensive. I was filled with excitement to see a Jamaican restaurant near me. My family was eager to taste the wonderful food. We ordered from Grubhub, so we knew ahead it was going to take a solid hour for it to be delivered. An hour passed, the food still had not shown. I gave it another 20 minutes then I called. The lady who answered alerted me it was on his its way. Almost a total of two hours went by and my father called. We were hungry and growing impatient. The lady answered with a reply to my father " I told you it was coming 20 minutes ago." My father was furious, he got into a shouting match with her then hung up. I called GrubHub to cancel and reported the business. The delivery man arrived and gave us the food on the house. The sad part despite everything. The food was actually pretty good. They missed the patties but it was free at this point. I would give Uncle Ralston's 5 stars because the food is really good. I am a child of Jamaicans, so I'm a tough critic of Caribbean food. Most other Jamaican restaurants you would WAIT an additional amount of time than what you were provided with to receive your food. (e.g. Told food would be ready in 45 minutes. Got there on time. Waited 20 more minutes and still wouldn't be ready). Uncle Ralston's isn't like that. My food was ready as soon as I got there. That's unheard of in the Caribbean restaurant circuit. I love that. The Ox Tail was great. And the Jerk Chicken was really good. Even though they don't have much seating, it doesn't matter. Ordering to go is the main purpose.
