Ah... service took a minute. No menus visible so I just ordered my usual taste bud items lol. so I ordered 2 oxtail comes with cabbage and rice and peas, and plantains, not the sweet soft ones. Cabbage was good. You just don't get alot for a large order. I find a menu on the way out $26.00 for a large, not so large, oxtail and it was ok. More gravy needed. Curry chicken patty was good. It's an I tried it kind of place. . Oh had to get the pineapple soda and a ginger pineapple soda yessss, never go wrong with those. This is based on one visit. But would come back to try again. I wanted to check this place out. Located on the west side of the train tracks in a strip mall It's not very big. Kinda scarce. Not a warm and welcoming vibe. The person who took my order was nice but the rest weren't very welcoming. A lot of options to choose from. Limited drinks choices - including Carribean sodas and water. I decided to try the jerk pork since I've never had that option any other Place I've ever been to. It comes in a small or large . The Small was ALOT. I really liked the Jerk seasoning but I wasn't crazy about the pork. The peas and rice were just ok. As was the cabbage and the plantain. There were a few high top tables you could sit at inside if you wanted but to be honest - some of the customers were super ghetto and loud . Talking on the phone with speak on. Just rude . The $18 goat curry was pretty disappointing! For the price I was expecting more. The meat was cooked well but the halfhearted seasoning left me wanting more flavor. I asked for spicy and they just cut some habanero over the whole dish. The side dishes were also bland. The rice had no real flavor. I felt the whole dish was lazy!!!! I lived in the Caribbean for 2 years and they believe in beautifully aromatic and robust seasoning when it comes to goat. Overall, I was disappointed with the dish. read more

Fantastic quality food. I can't speak for the restaurant environment, as I've never been inside nor picked up food from there directly myself. However the food is phenomenal with great texture and flavor. Meats are deliciously seasoned and moist. Their beef patties were out of this world, cooked to a nice crisp, flaky, and does not skimp out on their meat filling! -- My most recent time having them was better than my first time, so I'm not sure if it depends on the time of the day you try them. read more

Went to this place yesterday for jerk pork and it was amazing! It's hard to find pork at many Jamaican spots, but this restaurant delivered! It's a shame I'm here only for vacation, because I most def would have come here as a regular if I lived in this area. The pork was succulent and tasted grilled, not baked. A lot of times Jamaican spots downplay the spice levels to cater to American palates, but not here! I was delighted to find that the jerk tasted like REAL JERK you'd get back home. Rice was fluffy and delicious, and you could taste the coconut. Vegetables were nice as well. My only complaint is that they gave me only 1 plantain. I ate it too fast to take a pic lol. Just go....hands down the best meal I've had in I don't know how long!! They have a real master chef behind the black kitchen curtain...someone who reeeeeally knows food. Each thing was better than the next...all the way from my succulent just-the-right-amount-of-fatty jerk pork to the best piece of white bread I've ever had. Small little space tucked away in a shopping complex of about 6 stores. The food.. amazing. I got the jerk pork with rice and beans and it was nothing short of delicious. Had a quick discussion with the guy who runs the place and they've been around for about 30 years. The wait time was a little much at about 8 mins or so for the food to come out but well worth it. Ehhh. It was ok. I wouldn't say its something I would highly recommend to someone. I went there almost 2 hours before they closed and the guy told me they had no beef patties because they are going to be closing in an hour. And at first I thought ok I can see that maybe they don't sell, but 5 people come in after me asking for the same thing and nothing. The chicken curry had more bones than anything. They didn't even pour the curry sauce over the rice so the rice was extremely dry. Plus its pretty pricey so I would not be going back there and i would rather take the drive to Long Branch to Norah's Irie. So much better and better area. read more

Went here one day when another Jamaican restaurant (Jammin' Jamaican) was closed for a week. After driving past it nearly twice, I figured out where it was and turned into the fenced-in lot. Obviously, not in the greatest of areas. Immediately after exiting my car, one of the famous Asbury Park hobos came meandering over to me to try to get money for their drug / booze habit. Oh boy, fun. After they waddled away like a zombie, I ventured inside. The Islander is more of a takeout place, they don't have any seating available. Since this wasn't really the scenic part of town, I probably wouldn't have stayed even if there were tables. The staff were very friendly and in a great mood, promptly taking my order - curry goat with a meat pie on the side. A friend ordered the oxtail stew, all of which came out within 5-6 minutes, and we were back on the road. The food wasn't too bad, although the curry goat seemed to have more bones than actual meat. Still, the meat that was there was flavorful enough, not too fatty, and spiced well. The portion I had came with a huge serving of rice, some veggies, and a few sweet plantains on the side. Having paid for the "large" portion, I was a little disappointed to find that the majority of the container was filled with rice instead of meat. My friend wasn't a huge fan of his oxtail stew, saying the meat was rather tough / fatty, and the seasoning was a bit bland. Tasting it for myself, I tend to agree. I had a taste and The meat pie was nice and spicy and cooked well, but obviously one of the "fresh from the freezer section" varieties. In all, the food here was hit or miss. I'd give this place a 2.5 if I could - it really isn't bad, it's just not all that special. read more

ate the curry chicken and shrimp for a summer straight. their curry meals are top notch. Only a few bar chairs to sit facing the good ol' Asbury Park Police Dept and train station. Their lunch specials are too small of a portion for me so I always grab either a small or large order. Marlon is always friendly when I come to order. I would say they are definitely the best Jamaican restaurant in Monmouth County. Their liquor store next door is very convenient as well =) read more
