This place gets a solid 4.5/5 for its authentic southern Italian food and very friendly & attentive service. It has a very homey, old-school Italian American restaurant ambience - the opposite of the stylish, hipster or touristy restaurant vibe. Apparently this restaurants gets a lot of regulars, and I could see why. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you're transported back to the 1960s with the red-and-white checkered tablecloths, red chairs, old-style wax candles, brick walls, and a large black-and-white photo of an Italian family on the wall (perhaps the founder or owner's?). I could see this place being a movie set for films that need an old, classic Italian American restaurant as a setting. In addition to the décor, I love the 1960s music being played in the background. Size-wise, the inside of the restaurant isn't that big so it feels very cozy. It can get very busy and crowded after 5 pm, as most people seem to come here for dinner. We came during lunch hour and we were the only patrons there. The southern Italian touches are very apparent in most of their dishes - with heavy reliance on olive oil, tomato-based sauces (especially in the fish and seafood dishes), fresh seafood, herbs, peppers, and vegetables such as eggplant. This is in contrast to northern Italian cuisine that is characterized by rich, creamy dishes using butter, lard, and cheeses, and puts more emphasis on rice, polenta, and meat-heavy dishes (where as seafood is more prevalent in the south). Dishes that we tried: 1) Baccala (Pan-Seared Black Cod) - This was the BEST and my favourite dish here. The black cod had a crispy exterior and flaky interior, and came with roasted mini potatoes and mixed vegetables (zucchini, red bell pepper, Brussels sprouts, eggplant) roasted with garlic -- such a well-rounded and wholesome dish. The roasted mini potatoes were so flavourful, and the vegetables had a nice char. I asked for the puttanesca sauce on the side, as the fish was already flavourful on its own without the sauce. But the sauce was better than I expected - it contained actual whole chunks of cherry tomatoes and olives. 2) Steamed Mixed Fish & Seafood in Tomato Sauce - This dish wasn't on the website menu, but it was on the printed menu in the restaurant. It reminded me of cioppino (Italian-American mixed seafood stew with tomato sauce, herbs, and spices). It came presented as wrapped inside aluminum tin foil, which the server then opened in front of us on the table with steam coming out. The fish was salmon, and seafood consisted of mussels and shrimps. This dish was just alright. For almost $50, there wasn't much seafood. 3) Pizza Funghi - I liked the very thin and crispy crust, and the sliced roasted mushrooms as toppings, but I wasn't a fan of the "truffled honey" they added on top of the pizza. I didn't taste any truffle, and the honey made it very sweet. Not a fan of sweet pizza. 4) SIDES: Rapini, Brussels Sprouts, Mushrooms - They got bonus points for being able to customize the sides. They didn't have asparagus that day, so they substituted it for steamed Brussels sprouts with garlic instead - which was heavenly. The Brussels sprouts weren't overcooked at all, and they were generous with the garlic (anything with extra garlic gets extra thumbs up from me). The rapini came out chopped with a side of lemon wedge. Mushrooms weren't on the menu as a side, but we asked and they were able to make a simple side of just mushrooms. Overall the vegetables got 9/10. The chef was very friendly as he came out and talked to us. The server was extremely attentive. Great service overall. read more

Nice local Italian restaurant that is enjoyed by us locals as well as those who come down for shows at the St Lawrence ctr for the arts and the Meridian Hall as well as sports fan here for games. They have a great stock of wines and an impressive drink list that we don't get to enjoy as we can't handle drinks these days. We do enjoy the food and the friendly service immensely tho. Lots of options for shareable apps; excellent options on pizzas and pastas; and I am always impressed with their mains (as someone that has to limit carbs, options can be limited at some Italian restos). They are also understanding of reasonable diet requests. They have gluten-free options as well. We traveled all the way from the states hoping to get some good dinner for the night! I stumbled upon this cute this place in hopes that my mom and I would have an enjoyable experience. I called first to see if it was a wait since we were staying nearby and could simply walk. When I called a gentleman answered the phone and said it was a half hour wait but he could call me back....so my mom and I decided to go and see if we could put our name on the list or hopefully get seated quicker. We walk in and I mentioned that I had spoken to him over the phone and i immediately noticed his attitude.."I already told you it was an half hour wait." And I said yes I know and you said you would call me back without even asking for my phone number so he walks away and says wait let me see what I can do. He walked back up and said I can seat you now(KEEP IN MIND, the restaurant was EMPTY!) it was at most 2 parties seated at the time. Why pretend like it was a crowd? When there wasn't! From start to finish, we felt rushed and it made me rush and order without actually really READING the menu. I ordered the Pasta Al Vodka which is one of my go to dishes at any Italian restaurant but when this one came out, I knew immediately it would not be good! It was served with meat which I did not know and I mentioned to the same gentleman working the door and who was our server. Cardboard with mystery cheese. 1 basil leaf for the whole margarita pizza! The man argued with me saying that is well done. I will be back. Hands down. I want to eat everything on the menu. Such and inviting space with warm service. Even our fabulous server couldn't tell you what his favourite dish was because everything is delicious. The lasagna was huge and cheesy and the sauce was on point. Will you be too full for dessert? After a long day in the city while on vacation, I came to Uncle Tony's for a late dinner. The ambiance is warm and quiet, the service near-perfect (it took awhile to get started but once it got going had no issues), and the decor makes it inviting and adds richness to the meal. I had a the Vitello Alla Parmigiana (breaded veal cutlet, which came with a side of spaghetti), and garlic bread. The last time I was in Toronto was years ago with my now-deceased father. He's Italian, and veal was one of his favorite meals. So this dinner was a bit of an homage to him, and as a result it meant a lot to me that the whole experience was wonderful. Though I write this from my home in California, I hope to go to Toronto again someday and if so will hope this restaurant is still here. Also note: right across the street is the Dog Fountain. The food was literally felt like the frozen food. I had pizza and their house made lasagna which was simply felt like the food that we heated up from Metro. Further more the ambiance was so old and dated. The service was very transactional and also uncaring. I like this place mostly for the atmosphere. All the tables are lined with red and white linen, the lights are dim and the candles are all lit for dinner. It is a romantic space and homely at the same time. We had a mix of dishes, including the fried calamari, the squash raviolli and the funghi pizza. I really like all of them, as they each had their own unique texture and flavors. When reserving a table, ask for the curved booths as they are tucked away to one side and provide even more privacy from the larger space. read more

Stepping into Uncle Tony's is like walking into one's Sicilian grandparents' ristorante. The service was pleasant and the good was pretty good. I ordered the Melanzana Parmigana as an appetizer, which could really be made into a standalone entree. Well I just had the worse dining experience of my life at this horrible restaurant. Words to the wise - eat at another place. There are a lot of better real Italian Restaurants in Toronto not this fake one. Their menu is not the same as on the website. When we got their they have a set menu with a set price of $35.00 per. You have no choice in the matter. The food was horrible and the service was just as horrible. They demanded 18% gratuities and said it is the law in Toronto to always tip 18%. I gave a tip but was a $1.00 short of 18%. The waitress ran back to this non Italian owner and told him and he came running out to me and was yelling and screaming at me over a $1.00. The restaurant was full of people and he would not stop yelling at me. He has no class and embarrassed himself. I stood up for myself in a respectful way but I will never go back there again. He said to me that if you can not afford to eat there then don't come back. WOW what a complete loser of a human being. Waste of skin that is for sure. The Owner completely lost it on me. Not acceptable in my world. Everyone around me were in shock and said they will never go back to that restaurant as well. Oh another thing. If you only order one item they charge you an extra $6.00. I should have known better - even on a Friday night, there was plenty of seating available. We got the arugula salad, the fungi pizza and the tiramisu. Everything was described on the menu in a way that was mouth watering, but the delivery falls short. The salad had 3 tomatoes, and about 5 pecans. That was it. The fungi pizza had common button/portobello mushrooms, very few scallions, and we couldn't taste the truffle oil. Somehow, for a thin crust pizza, the crust was soggy. I didn't know that was possible. The tiramisu was served in a mason jar, which is a cool idea, but it made it super wet, and there was only one layer of lady fingers. I was in Toronto today as a high school student from Kingston on a field trip. I was looking for a restaurant in the area while we were out for lunch around the St. Lawrence Market. I saw this place on my map and looked online. Looked like a nice Italian atmosphere, and I trusted that enough to think they'd have great pizza. I was just in Toronto 5 days ago, and I tried North of Brooklyn, Dave Portnoy's #1 pizza in Toronto. It was good, nothing wrong with it, but not an 8.4. I got a pepperoni at Uncle Tony's and it was amazing. Same style as NOB, but much better. An amazing spice on there (I'm not too good with detecting what's basil, garlic, oregano, etc.), and it was thin, crispy, cheesy...amazing. My waitress was amazing as well, a younger middle eastern lady. She was fast and very nice. The atmosphere was great too. The only problem I had was the old guy (either owner or manager), he seemed to be a mix of like Italian and eastern Asian. I walked in with a backpack on, so maybe he didn't like that (???), and I asked for a table for one. No response. Then he walked me to a table and said, "Sit in that seat," with an annoyed tone. Then he didn't talk to me the whole time. I was one of two tables in there since it was 2:30pm on a Wednesday. He kept walking by, looking at me on my phone like I was breaking a law. Apparently I should just sit in silence alone? He seemed to really boss the waitress around as well, sounding impatient and rude to her the whole time. At the end, I paid, told my waitress how great the pizza was, and while I was speaking to her, he came up and said, "Ok, thank you, she needs to go work now. Bye bye." One of the best pizzas I've had in a while, best I've had in Toronto, amazing atmosphere, amazing staff...just not the old guy. Uncle Tony's is a super cute Italian mom and pop shop in the heart of the St. Lawrence market area downtown. The interior is comprised of exposed brick and several round and intimate booths. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We went with a group of friends and we purchased the fat tony and funghi pizzas. They were cooked to perfection in stone ovens and every topping was super fresh (LOVED the spicy Italian sausage on the fat tony). We are also purchased the squash ravioli and it was amazing! Highly recommend this dish (see picture). To enhance your dishes, be sure to request their homemade spicy sauce...but beware...it is actually quite spicy! The vibe at Uncle Tony's is fantastic. Checkered tables, small intimidate setting with candle-lit tables, dimmed light (evening meal) with a soft backdrop of pleasant music to listen to... I was very pleased with what I saw! A sharp contrast to the busy & loud neighborhood you just stepped out of. I went with one of their pizzas and it was just fantastic. Thin crust, bursting with flavor it really made my evening. Barely 10 minute wait time. I matched the pizza with one of their jack cocktails and a little Brio, I was in heaven. MMMMMMM My waitress ended up being my hostess as well, very friendly and attentive, truly a 5 star experience. I will knock it down a notch however as the dessert of fried doughnuts and side chocolate left me less than impressed. Their dessert menu didn't seem very interesting and I feel they could do much better in that regards. Italian cuisine is FILLED with amazing Italian unique styled desserts, kindly incorporate those in your dessert menu, maybe even have a dessert of the week. They have these adorable little booths for 2 tops. We had the nozarella sticks calamari and a pizza to split. The pizza is brick oven which is so popular in Toronto. Most places won't have a nice crispy crust on the bottom but uncle Tony's does it perfectly. The mozzarella sticks and calamari were also really good. Sticks clearly homemade. This is a cute little 60s inspired pizza joint! In an area surrounded by overpriced restaurants, this is a glimmer of reasonably priced good food. The ingredients are fresh, the menu is concise but has something for everyone, and there is a great cocktail list. So why the three stars? I think this place was a solid four except for the service. The zucchini flowers were good but you got four small flowers for $12, I thought it'd be worth $8 at most. The pizza was good but it was pretty plain and standard, nothing special. And finally, the deep-fried cheesecake was the most disappointing of all, it tasted nothing like cheesecake. It was made of something like ricotta and wasn't the least bit sweet. I hosted a work dinner with some of my translators here earlier this month. Making a reservation for 10 people via Open Table turned out to be impossible, but it was easy enough via phone. The service was friendly and efficient enough throughout the dinner (we had to remind the waitress a couple of times about an ordered item - but no big deal). There was live music by a guy with an accordion 75% of the time - most folks in my group were able to enjoy it, but for some of them it was rather annoying and it also made conversations harder since the music was pretty loud. Now in regards to the food: I ordered the antipasti platter and the focaccia appetizer for my table to share as well as the Seafood Spaghetti as my main course. The appetizers were yummy but the order of focaccia was a bit too small. My Seafood Spaghetti was amazing! It was a generous portion with lots of mussels that were cooked just right. I would order that again in a heartbeat. 3 other people at the table ordered the same dish and liked it just as much. The spaghetti with meatballs, the butternut squash agnolotti and the mushroom risotto were also a big hit at the table, but the Veal Osso Bucon was a very small portion. It was bustling with Friday night diners, there was a gentleman playing the accordion, and they had the dining room lit with candlelight. Great ambiance. We didn't have a reservation and were offered a 15-minute wait, a seat at the bar or the chef's table. We selected the chef's table where we watched Tom, the chef, and his crew in action. Tom hosted us for appetizers and desserts and made us feel extremely welcome. We also ordered the fried calamari, Fat Tony's pizza, and spaghetti with meatballs. My company and I were hesitant to try Uncle Tony's due to the mixed reviews on Yelp. We decided to give it a try because the place had very cute retro vibe to it when we looked in from the outside window. We were worried about the service after reading all those mixed reviews, but our server was very professional and nice. We ordered a Vongole pasta dish and a potato pizza to share. Everything tasted amazing, and though I had not so high expectation for their food in the beginning, it was above just 'better-than-I-expected.' Vongole flavor was very well soaked into the pasta dish, and all the ingredients in the dish were fresh. They didn't over-sauce the pizza, which made thin crust not so soggy like some of other hipster pizza stores, and it was still flavorful. They had a live music going on while we were eating, and both of us enjoyed it a lot. I would have given them 5 stars if they had a better ventilation system.. The smoke out of kitchen was traveling in the store, and my eyes were hurting at one point. Other than that, everything else was great! read more

This place is a cute little spot that isn't as busy as it should be. The first time I went about a year ago, it was packed, but this time around, there were only 2 other tables that came after us during lunch time. The first time I went, I tried their fat tony pizza and didn't really enjoy it considering it cost $22. The pizza was too salty and although it is thin crust it was slightly mushy. This time around, I shared the funghi pizza, butternut squash agnolotti and the arugula salad. Everything was delicious! The pizza was perfectly thin and crispy with the right amount of cheese to mushroom ratio. The butternut squash agnolotti was soft, creamy and slightly sweet. I loved this dish! Meanwhile, the menu online is completely different from what they actually have. Plus they got rid of their whole cocktail menu. My gf and I tried their seafood pasta on our Valentine's Day dinner. The atmosphere is really nice and cosy. The seafood pasta has ample amount of seafood, especially the mussels. We wanted plain as neither of us could handle spicy tomato sauce and the kitchen accommodated our request. However, they seem to not clean the mussels cleanly because I can taste the sand in the mussel. They also appear not to replace the tablecloth because there were some garlic bread crumbs on my elbow when I put my arm on the table (and we did not order any bread in our visit). This restaurant does not have the capacity to serve a large party (20+ people) in an adequate time frame, has abysmal service, and mediocre food. My friend hosted her birthday here and it was for a large party of around 20 people. The restaurant was not busy for a Saturday night and there were maybe 3-4 other tables. Everyone arrived by 8:15 and we ordered by 8:30........only for our food to arrive around 10:30. What really gets on my nerves is the servers, they gave us ZERO reassurance about our food. They just came, filled our glasses with water and left. Nothing about getting some more appetizers, or apologizing for the delay, or suggesting that maybe some people can get there food first? When asked, they simply said "soon"...which meant waiting for another 1.5 hours. I think the strategy for the restaurant is to starve their patrons so the food would seem to taste better. As for the food, the pizza wasn't bad, but not good either. Thin crust, little sauce, little cheese, non-existent toppings. The taste was good, but for the value...not worth it. Some of my friends ordered the pasta and I have to say that it was the worst pasta I have ever eaten. The carbonara linguine was overcooked and every bite left this powdery residue in the mouth.
