Spokane is a funny place for board gamers. Board game cafes are heavy on the "cafe" and light on the "board game." Game shops seem to either have no space to play a game or they have lots of space with no clear instructions on when/how the space can/should be used and by whom. And all of the shops we visited while in town were struggling with identity crisis. As for Uncles: Good: Board game selection is better than the other shops we visited in town Bummer: Not a cafe and no obvious place to play a game, so likely intended as strictly retail rather than a gaming space. (No harm no foul...just offering an observation for the advantage of others) Bad: Nobody offered to help (employees stayed behind the counter while we were there). Odd: Organization/layout and display shelves were a challenge. Some areas were clearly organized and others less so. Just when I started to think I was understanding the organizational scheme, I'd find a game that obviously belonged with a group of others on the other side of the store. Just my opinion, but there is enough selection here that an alphabetical layout scheme would probably make sense. Suggestion: Pick an identity: Toy store or game shop? Gone are the days of the bizarrely mixed toy department in the basement of the local sporting goods store. Board games have moved beyond classification as "toys" and into the realm of being a true hobby all its own. If Uncles decides to focus up as a game store, consider dumping the little kid toys and leaning heavier into collectibles loved by most gamers (e.g. Funko, Iron Studios, Superhero/Fantasy/Sci-Fi stuff, etc.) Parking: rough. (Seemed as though downtown paid street parking was the only option.) Pricing is pretty standard for brick and mortar...a touch higher than you can find online in most cases. (I call it the "Instant Gratification Tax.") At the end of the day, I came away feeling as though the shop might be run by a pair of contentious siblings...one who loves modern board games and the other who is convinced that kid's toys are the way to go. Combining them in this small a space was OK in the '80s but now is just confusing for both groups. read more

I am not sure if they are limited by location space or just cater to more specific needs, but the overall selection seemed a bit small compared to other game stores in the area. And what they do have seems to be at a premium price. Again, probably due to location. They are usually only staffed by one or sometimes two people, so you have to work to get questions answered. I like to pop in here if I happen to be downtown to check out what is new, but the prices usually scare me away to compare at other stores in the area. I wish these guys well because it is fun to stop. The prices are just too high to shop. read more

I love this game store. It's tucked in right next to Auntie's bookstore in the heart of downtown Spokane and is packed to the gills with fabulous puzzles, board games, and so much more. They have a whole wall of interesting and well priced puzzles. There are aisles of games ranging from the traditional and well-loved classics (Dominoes, Sorry, Monopoly) to the more unique and strategy and adventure games (Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Dixit). read more

Bought something a week ago that I ended up not needing. They had an issue with the receipt printer so the girl gave me a full page receipt and signed it. I told her I might need to return something, she said there would be no issue. Tried to return the unopened product with the receipt they gave me, the dipshit tells me he can't give me my money back because it's not a normal receipt. This is such a great area for gift shopping for yourself and others. Uncle's carries unusual and interesting games, most of which I have neither seen or played before. I recently scored a nice deck of Monty Python Flux there. The game possibilities are endless if you have a lot of money to spend. They are not cheap but the folks working there are plenty nice and helpful. Besides, what else are you going to do in Spokane? Stock up for those long snow days! read more

Don't call it a 30 day satisfaction guarantee if opening the packaging of the game means it can't be returned. That's not a satisfaction guarantee, it's false advertising. Why not just say no returns if opened? Then people wouldn't try to return games and have to talk to two clerks that don't know how to perform a return, and a manager who complains returns are for unopened products only. Just look at the two paragraph long tome on the back of their receipts. It's baffling and confusing. Just write "no returns for opened merchandise." Done. Then we'll understand one another like couples with a prenuptial. You seemed so friendly Uncle's. If only you treated me with some dignity when I came back for you. read more

Beautiful store, incredible selection, and super-friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff! Go to just to see the dice they have! But leave yourself time for the rest of the store, you'll need it! Neat game shop located under Auntie's Bookstore. What more can I say? Easy to get to and a good variety.

As the only dedicated board game shop in Spokane (as far as I know) I want to like this place. Compared to Seattle though, this place is paltry. Part of the meager offerings stems from their diversity. As Alyssa mentioned, they use space to carry classic America board games, puzzles, etc. If that is what you are in to, more power to you. But I want the German/Euro style board games. Sure they have Ticket to Ride and Settlers and a few others, but there are so many more out there! It is really frustrating that there is nowhere in Spokane to get them. To be fair, the Uncle's at the Valley mall is a bit larger and has a better selection, but even then it is small compared to the stores in Seattle (which, BTW, aren't big, they just don't waste space on puzzles and monopoly). I really feel like there are other places to get puzzles and monopoly and would love to see Uncle's pull away from this merchandise. You might be thinking that I should stop complaining and just buy games online. It isn't the same. True board game stores often host game nights where you can come and play store copies (or games other people bring) and try them out before you throw down all that cash (Euro games ain't cheap). Sometimes an employee will just start playing a game with you even if it isn't a game night. That is a unique service that no one in Spokane offers yet. The Comic Book Shop in North Town has the potential, but they aren't really striving for it. read more

What a fun store- Especially if you are a Catan fan. They hosted a fantastic fun tournament and everyone had a great time this past spring. They have games there that you would not find in most stores and if you want to play them can link up with others. The clerks are friendly and like to game themselves. read more

Games! Games! Games! This is a great place to stop if you enjoy playing games of any kind. It has board games, puzzles, card games, unique chess boards, checkers, backgammon, cribbage,dominoes, balls for juggling, ropes for jumping, kites, adventure games, and a good variety of other game-ish things you maybe didn't know existed. They have had game clubs here at times for chess or Dungeons and Dragons. Friendly staff, small store which connects to Aunties Books and a good coffee shop. You'll have fun here. If you can't find what you're lookig for, I believe the Spokane Mall has a game store similar to Uncle's. read more

UPDATE - James from Uncle's reached out to me regarding my experience with inflated pricing, and offered to refund the difference between what we paid and MSRP. He said that "A little while back we had someone who was trying to make us "more profitable" by changing prices to above MSRP", which was against their business practices. He also said that they had fixed the pricing on most items, but that they must have missed one. I am willing to accept this at face value, and am raising my rating to 4 stars, since generally speaking I like this shop and have patronized it without issue in the past. read more
