I remember visiting this shop years ago in their previous location and was excited to return on my recent visit to Austin. Their new location has a different vibe but still plenty of neat and offbeat antiques to check out and you could easily spend a couple hours in here and not see everything. Prices veer a bit higher. I heard about this antique and "oddities" store a while back and told myself that if I ever visited Austin, TX, I would just have to go here. I visited Austin earlier this year and was SO excited to finally check this place out. I was able to find parking easily in the back of the shop. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to walk around in here, there is TONS to see. I think I spent about an hour just walking room to room and trying to soak it all in. The items they have are super unbelievable. From a funeral home sign, to old vintage photos, to taxidermy, to jewelry, furniture, to basically anything you can imagine. I ended up buying a vintage bottle opener called "Johny Guitar". I wish I could have fit more items in my bag to bring home. MUST-SEE if you are in Austin! read more

Can't think of a more fitting name for this store. Most of their items have a ton of history to them. Most of their stuff is antique style items. They've got single items and sets that you can use or display at home. Almost every area/section was organized by similar items and/or color coordinated. Every corner of the store requires your full undivided attention. It took me 40 minutes to checkout everything, but probably missed some things. Definitely come check it out! Not a fan. Was just here today and was shocked by the rude staff. A man with a beard was working the counter. He was very strange almost as if he were on drugs. There was an older women helping him and she was equally as unprofessional and rude. I'm a collector with years of experience, Ive shopped stores across the states, England and Europe this store has mostly overpriced knick knacks and junk. I could excuse them for that because they are basically a retail store in a high rent area, what I can not excuse is rude, unprofessional staff. Serious collectors don't waste your time, let the amateurs have it. read more

I always love showing SoCo off to my friends when they're in town. Its the perfect mix of eclectic, classy and historic. Uncommon Objects is always on the list of stores to check out. Its definitely a fun time wandering through the color-coded rooms. I feel like a voyeur going through all of the once-personal items of people not-yet forgotten. I do have to agree that as fun as it is, I feel the prices are inflated for kitsch, location and popularity. All of the three to me, are unjustifiable. I've eyed a few things and swiftly placed it back on the shelf after eyeing the price tag. No matter - its a fun stop for those stopping into Austin. Keep it weird. Keep it funky. I've paid this store quite a few visits, and like other reviewers have stated, it's easy on the eyes and something fun to do if you have extra time in Austin. However, I would never purchase anything from here and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. There's lots of shady business. There are quite a few items that they try to pass off as actual vintage items. For example, they have a shelf near the front of the store of McCoy vases, though, only some of them are authentic McCoy. Others are priced the exact same as the authentic, even though the tag specifies they aren't sure if it's an actual McCoy. I picked up an old ball of yarn that looked like it'd been through hell and back and it was priced at $6. There are so many items that are missing parts to something else and come with an insane price tag. A piece of plastic that acted as a vintage hairdryer receiver for $25? There's also a bowl of about 200-300 identical keys on one of the counters that are priced at $15 a piece. I just think that's ridiculous. The placement of the items is cute, and each individual section has somewhat of a theme going on. I just always thought the idea of a vintage/antique store was to offer actual uncommon pieces, and not things people modge podged together and brought in. It's hard to tell the difference between something someone might have made or something that's of value. Rarely do tags state what date an item traces back to. The best part of the selection are the vintage photographs of families dating back to the 1900's. I will say that the shop has some pretty weird, entertaining stuff. I really liked this store. It's nestled in all the cute little eclectic shops off South Congress in Austin and I had a blast roaming up and down the streets looking in the stores at the wares. This antique store is fairly large and has a ton of neat items all in great condition inside and not at all overpriced. I saw several pleateau mirrors, a recent obsession of mine, in various states of preservation for relatively reasonable prices. I found a really cute flat beveled one for $28 and a much larger couple for between $40-80. I mention this because, since I have purchased 4 of those in the last year I am familiar with their pricing and they go for anywhere from $100-300 usually. So this store is very reasonably priced. They had lots of old keys, antique mirrors, china, furniture, lamps, antlers (my friend bought two as a centerpiece for her Texas style) lightbulbs, crystals and jewelry up front in a glass case. I ended up buying an amethyst rock and a small antique jewelry box. I spent about $40 on those two items and the amethyst alone would cost $50-100 if I bought it new from a store. They employees were very friendly and helpful, ready and willing to answer any and all questions and help you hunt out the items you were looking for, they also would hold items up front for you until you were ready to pay and carefull wrapped them for safekeeping. Next time I visit Austin, which may be next year, I'll be stopping in again! read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place! I've been here plenty of times in my almost 10 years in Austin, it's pretty much an institution to me. I just expect it to be there for me forever. I'd be sad if it left SoCo. Uncommon Objects is a fun place to just explore. They have a great way of leading you in a circle around the store instead of not knowing where to go next. There's three billion things here, so either plan on spending some time here, or pace yourself accordingly! Even though they have so many things, I never feel claustrophobic or that I can't easily pick something up and look at it. They have a wonderful selection of stuff, you will most certainly find something interesting to look at, even if you don't buy....which brings me to the big elephant in the room.... ...It's just too damn expensive for me. In the many times I have been here, I have bought 1 item. It was amazing and I'm so glad I found it, but that means I've been here probably 15 times and not bought a single thing. But that doesn't really take away from my experience, I just like checking everything out. They have to pay the South Congress rent somehow, and people seem to buy stuff, so more power to ya Uncommon Objects. If you are on South Congress, you definitely have to check it out. I'm a fan of the vintage, antique, and weird, so I'm at home here. It's also a fun place to take those out-of-towners, because it's a good spot to be in town, right in the middle of the all the SoCo fun. read more

This is a cool little antique store I did not anticipate walking into as we strolled down Congress to make our way to the food trucks area. I have never really been big on antiques and treasure hunting stores because there's just a lot of effort to find that treasure. And also there are a lot of people trying to find what you're trying to find. But this store is very unique. There are different merchants at each counter and they sell different things. There is a great big jewelry collection from exotic and afar lands which were super awesome, lots of old signs, vintage leather accessories. Pretty awesome to see all kinds of goodies i here. There are a lot of people though, so competition for the perfect item is fierce. Read about this place on Austin365.com. Seemed like a fun stop while we waited out the rain. It's a weird flea-market/museum of sorts/novelty shop. Everything is for sale, but the prices are kind of ridiculous. There is a lot of taxidermy and antlers and old dolls. Some interesting art and furniture. For me, it was missing the "super weird" stuff I would have expected (like dead things in jars and archaic medical devices) and bordered on hipster and kitsch. Again, the prices in here are not for the faint of heart and were kind of a turn off. BUT it was an interesting way of killing an hour. read more

This place has so much: vintage clothing, rare dolls, super old postcards, jewelry, cameras, posters, tin containers with cool packaging, etc. It's a little expensive, like the rest of the SoCo shops, but I'm pretty sure people make the trip to Austin just to see what's inside this enormous and ridiculously entertaining store. I bought this stuffed oil-cloth (like vinyl table-cloth material) chicken, hand-stitched, from the '40s or '50s. It was only $15, what a find. read more

Their visual merchandising is freaking amazing and their vintage jewelry makes me drool. Are you looking for a jar full of troll heads? How about a 50 year old eyeless teddy bear? Well the odds are you will find it at Uncommon objects, the name really does justice to the place. This place is full of fun things on South Congress. You never know what you might find in here and it is fun to walk around whether you buy something or not. I recently found out that a gallery I really like in Waxahachie called Webb Gallery has some of their items on display in this store. I guess this store is operated like the San Francisco Antique Mall, where various people rent space and display their items. I might be wrong, but it felt that way during my visit. That would also explain why the prices are a bit high and not negotiable, which I do not know first hand but have read in other reviews. The location on South Congress is fantastic. It is situated between a handful of interesting stores that complement each other well. If you cannot find parking directly in front, the streets behind the stores offer more free parking. read more

Great operation. Lots of unique items. They value them very much but was worth even just looking. They were very cooperative and helpful in getting to things if you were unable to reach them. One of your party was in a wheelchair and she had no trouble getting through the store and finding the things she wanted to see. The taxidermy was interesting, painted portrait of Stephen F. Austin, great prints, vintage typewriters, overall the experience was a site. It had great merchandising and everyone found something at their price point high or low. read more

What a cool stop! I loved stopping in and seeing what they had to offer. A feast for the eyes and a wonderful experience for any lover of uncommon objects! Service is awesome, everyone is very willing to assist and answer any questions you may have. Youll need about 2 hours to see all the things in detail. There are items in every shelf and crevice and if you go too fast youll miss it! The only reason i knocked a star is just because of the prices being so extremely high for anything i had interest in. I added photos of all the cool stuff along with prices to give you a ballpark. I didnt get to take anything home but i very much loved seeing it all. read more

Beautiful selection of great finds. My biggest issue with a lot of places that sell "oddities" is that they often skip right over eccentric and jump right into "creepy" or medical and, while I appreciate those things, those aren't the kinds of things I like. This place was filled with all kinds of goodies and was very well curated. I didn't feel like I was sifting through junk, nor did I feel like someone had intentionally gone out of their way to be provocatively strange in a way that could feel tacky. I came home with many things to put in my new house. I shall surely be coming back. read more

This antique store does indeed have unique things. However they are quite pricey. The location isn't near any of the other Austin attractions. If you are crunched for time, skip it. Otherwise pop in and you will see why Austin's motto is "keeping Austin weird." read more

They say "Keep Austin Weird" - and this place is the poster child for it. Uncommon Objects is a must-see when in town. The store is jam-packed with curated oddities, old treasures and bizzare finds. I could have easily spent hours in here admiring all the goodies. Old tarot cards? Check. Tin types? Check. Bowties, boots, collars, signs, taxidermy animals, teeth, creepy dolls, game pieces -- everything, folks. Do yourself a favor and stop in. This place is full of junk, and that's the point. They've curated the best diamonds in the rough and some odd balls too. The entire rectangular box of a store has been made into several dozen little stores all color coordinated and content driven to match. You could walk into one cubby buy the lot, take it home and decorate a whole room and it's going to look like you know what's up. It'll cost you a fortune though. Good junk doesn't come cheap. If you're feeling nostalgic just stroll through, gently thumb through old memories that were never yours. Imagine the simpler times. Appreciate advertisements long faded for products now forgotten. Wonder at the weight and craftsmanship of furniture and items that make you want to donate all your IKEA pieces and go all vintage. Don't forgot on your way out to check the only non vintage section, the card wall. Clever witty cards pairing a single word and a single image to make a naughty phrase. Good for a laugh. Really neat shop for antique and vintage items. There are so many things here that you can browse and buy -- you really just have to see for yourself, but here are some examples: - Old cameras - Vintage glass bottles (medicine bottles, drink bottles, etc.) - Empty cannon shells - Old postcards - Jewelry and brooches - Utensils and plates/bowls - Old election pins - Antique keys - Sassy greeting cards One drawback: the items and or shop were dusty so it flared up my allergies after looking around in the store for only about 10 min. Even though I had low dose allergy medication in my system, it wasn't enough to counter the dust in the store and on the items. Hard to avoid in an antique shop I suppose. read more

Fun to browse!! The store is split into "stalls" with a winding corridor in the middle and you can peer/wander into the stalls to look at the objects more in detail. You can easily spend 30 mins to an hour window-shop the store with a friend. There's lots of interesting objects like vintage cameras, stuffed animal heads, glass figurines, etc. Definitely a good pick when looking to pick up gifts or adding on to your home decor! Note that since this is SoCo... Parking is non-existent. A good tip would be to park closer down the hill/closer to the bridge, and to walk up Congress Ave. Then you can hit more stores on your walk. Don't worry about holding up traffic if you happen to find a parking spot (reverse parking only or else it's a ticket/tow), it happens frequently enough anyway... read more

Very interesting place and a MUST visit shop for TOURISTS! There's a bunch of random things in here and it's set up like an organized hoarder museum. I love it! What they lack in cheap finds, they make up for in interesting items. You could spend hours in here looking through the antiques, upcycles, and just weird junk. The same thing can be said about most antique stores, but I've never been to one with quite so many unique items (check out my pictures). I recommend going during the week rather than the weekend because they do get pretty crowded. My favorite area is probably the drawers of jewelry, political pins, and miscellaneous littles. Spend time in each section, open drawers and search through nooks. You never know what you will find in this shop! read more

I've wanted to go to this store ever since I started watching Bunny on YouTube she has done a few hauls from this particular store and it looked like it would be such a cool store to go to. As soon as my sister asked me to go to Austin with her that was my chance to see what Uncommon Objects was like in person and I was definitely not let down. They had everything from taxidermy bats to mini plastic babies. This is the most unique antique store I've ever been to given the wide array of goods they have to offer. We actually liked looking around so much we came back a second time to look at everything again! I scored some pretty cool things I got a vile that had a butterfly wing in it, a few pin up playing cards and a old post card from world war ll. If I ever get a chance to come back to Austin I'm definitely going to stop in this store again. read more

As far as South Congress goes, Uncommon Objects is definitely a place to stop by and always has been. I'm actually really happy to see them move to the new South Austin location and hoping there will be more parking there. As for actually buying anything here, it's unlikely that anytime I come in that I'll walk out with anything. Even the smallest of trinkets are $20 and up and anything that you would put on a shelf or desk is usually $50 to $80 dollars. Even with the sale going on before they move, it's SO expensive. But three stars for having interesting things to look at! (Maybe it's too hopeful of me to think they'll lower their prices at this new location...) read more

As I'm sure the owners of Uncommon Objects already know this, their wonderfully eccentric store on Congress is probably 90% lookers and 10% buyers and boy, do I love to look. The museum of oddities would blow the Little Mermaid's mind...Screw your dinglehopper, they've got more whoz-its and whats-its than her tiny little redhead could even fathom. Though there are quite a bit of people in there, the little nooks help flow people through the store of taxidermied animals including a dapper rabbit (he's bound to be late now) to toys your grandmother probably thought were old to old photos and busts of people ready to bust out of the ouji boards and crystal balls tucked onto shelves. While this place looks like a sick game of eye spy, this array of strange is curated so well to to look like organized chaos. I especially like the color-themed areas because, who knows, you might need that little red velvet jewelry box to accent your vintage collection of red soup cans. I even love that everything is priced with little labels, with some just saying, "really old picture $XX" Yes, some things are expensive, if you're in the market for a two-headed troll or you've been seeking out a vintage lighter since you started going to concerts and want to appropriately pay tribute to your favorite bands ( wth is with the lighter image on Apple phones...) but we bought some patches, and saw other reasonably priced peculiar paraphernalia. I'd love to go back with a stack of cash to find fun uncommon objects to decorate my house with...till next time! read more

We were really impressed with the layout of the store. Each room has a different color/theme. My wife was a little weirded out by the creepy dolls with one eye. There were random old photographs for sale, to give an idea. Worth checking out although you probably won't leave with anything purchased. read more
