I really love this spot. I actually used to live down the street, so it started as a convenient go-to, but I still come back because the ambiance is great and the ramen is consistently good. I also appreciate that I don't get that heavy MSG aftertaste that I get at some other ramen places. The noodles are flavorful, and they're very generous with the toppings. I've ordered the Farmers Market ramen a few times, and my boyfriend usually gets the tonkotsu -- both are always solid. Overall, for San Diego, I think this place is a great ramen spot. read more

Where do I start? This place is overly hyped all over social media. I had high hopes for this place because friends have raved about it, but I was gravely disappointed. The broth was room temp at best, no flavor. The noodles have an egg-y taste and all clumped up like they were sitting there in the fridge overnight and didn't even bother to untangle them, definitely off-putting. Overall had a great experience. Came here the a freind. The atmosphere and the music is good. Most seating is on an outdoor patio, but there are outdoor heaters. It was a bit windy for us so we sat at the bar next to the kitchen. You order at the front and then they bring your food to you. It's open seating and if you have a large party it can be hard to get a table big enough for the whole party if you don't get there before the rush hits. The food was quick to come out. I had the Underbelly Ramen and I enjoyed it but the pork chashu was under seasoned and I wish they had chili oil to add to the broth. Spicy edamame and freind dumpling were good too. Ordering another drink wasn't too hard, I just don't like having to leave my spot in order to get something else. Staff walks around pretty often making it easy as well. I've been here twice, years apart from each visit, and have to say not much has changed! The casual method of ordering upfront and little to no service gives you context of how the atmosphere is here. Totally underwhelming the first time I ever came and on my recent visit. I love the vibes and hidden feeling of this place here in NP, just not a big fan of the food. I got their Belly of the Beast ramen, and everything was completely off. The seaweed and short rib tasted old, the noodles were soggy, and their concept of an oxtail dumpling just didn't work for me. I did like their marinated egg, but that was just about it. Overall, I came hungry, left hungrier and I didn't finish the food. Definitely one of the older spots for ramen that has lasted and has even scored a second location. My absolutely favored ramen spot I have ever been to. The food is incredible so flavorful and at such a great price!! The underbelly is my favorite as it comes with both pork belly and shredded pork. The belly of the beast comes with dumplings in the ramen. It is order as you walk in and they bring you your food. They are so fast less than 5 minutes and you get your meal. On a rainy day they are very busy. They are great for eating there with lots of outdoor seating and fireplaces and super fun festive cocktail glasses. They are also great for take out and they separate the noodles from the broth so that it does not get soggy. Portions are also very large lasts me 2 meals. read more

I think it is by design to control the customer and kitchen flow, but waiting for 30 minutes to order at a counter at full service prices is not ideal. Even the beers take a long time to arrive because it's all ticketed upon ordering upfront. Like other Consortium spots, they know despite the flaws in user experience, people will wait and pay top dollar to order at the counter for a cool vibe. If they change the set up, I'd come more, other wise a cool spot to take guests during off hours to avoid a 30-40 minute line to order. Also agree the bar chairs are literally designed to make you not want to stay for beer #2 (trust me!!) read more

I'm all for moody ambiance, but if I need night vision goggles to read the menu, we've gone too far. Asked for a little help choosing and got... a finger pointing at the text. No explanation, no guidance, just "read." Cool. Got it. No water offered. No mention it's self-serve. Just vibes. (Dry ones.) Shoutout to the one kind staff member who noticed and stepped in, brought us water, explained things, and basically saved the experience. Give that man a raise. Seriously. He was the only one who remembered where he was and what he was doing there. Because everything else felt like we were inconveniencing someone by simply existing. The ramen looked good, but it's hard to enjoy a meal when the service makes you feel like you should've eaten somewhere else. All the seating is very cool, with a partially outdoor/indoor bar and plenty of heaters. Unfortunately, the ramen was... dare I say.... a bit.... bland. I was very underwhelmed by the Thai Curry ramen, there was no depth or intensity of flavor you get from curry and the whole bowl just fell really flat. We should have gone with our gut and turned around when we heard the music was as loud and as horrible as the little Italy location--starting with 'Hey Motherf*cker' (Google the lyrics, leave the kids at home) and moving on to 'No Shave November,' with the de rigueur irregular loud drum. (See my previous review.) But memories of the soup brought us in and so we tried but failed to find a quiet corner. Then my favorite ramen was brought to the table...beef like shoe leather--not the tender brisket it used to be--a tasteless egg, a different kind of noodle, and worst of all, the legendary ox tail dumplings were gritty and over salty with none of the buttery sweetness and texture from before...and probably no oxtail. I really wanted to like this place. The ambiance was beautiful. There was a long line to eat so it gave the impression of being fire! A cute little, hidden gem in North Park that is aesthetically pleasing, but the ramen was trash. I was so disappointed. I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen for me and the Chicken ramen for my husband. The noodles were so over cooked they were soggy and mushy. The small piece of pork that came with it was mostly fat. Bad enough, you barely get any pork and the piece you get barely had meat on it. The broth was flaaaaavvvoooorrrllleeesssss!. Where is the seasoning at? I had to use the packets of seasoning they give you and the hot sauce to try give it some life. It was still dead.
