Been to Underbelly in North Park a few times and really like this spot. The Ramen is always consistently good. Parking can be a little difficult and it's usually busy, but I've never waited too long to order or get my food. You order at the front and find your own open seating, so you may end up sharing a table with other people, which is totally fine. The oxtail dumplings are really good and the eggs are always perfectly jammy. Love the ambiance too. I prefer sitting at the bar so I can easily order another drink, otherwise you have to get back up to order. read more

5/10 - this place was so good back then when I was a student, and we tried it again after 10+ years. I am actually shook that the prices stayed the same after 10 years, inflation who is she?! And the drinks looked yummy and was affordable too. I would say that the quality of the Ramen isn't as good as I remembered. Back then the oxtail dumplings and the beef in the Belly of the Beast was so delicious and tender. This time it seemed like it wasn't as good, but maybe my taste has changed after 10 years. I actually also really love the ambience and thought that the vibes were on point with the nice upscale bar-like atmosphere... without needing to drink. Our noodles were definitely overcooked, and way too mushy for me. They were kind enough to remake my bowl for me with the noodles being more al dente and it was much better! I rarely leave negative Yelp reviews, but I had a very disappointing experience here on Sunday, August 2. The moment we walked in, we were told to order and pay right at the entrance. I asked, "What if we want to order more beer or sake later?" because whenever we come here, we usually order three or four sakes and three or four beers throughout the meal. His response was simply, "It's just the two of us." I understand that they were short-staffed, but that's not an excuse to make customers feel rushed and unwelcome. Honestly, the way he spoke to me and looked at me genuinely scared me. After we sat down, I turned to my friend and said, "I'm scared of him." I rushed through the menu and ordered the first thing I saw because I just wanted to get away from the counter. I've been here before, and I loved the food. In fact, that's exactly why we came back. But this time, because of the atmosphere and the way I was treated, I couldn't enjoy the meal at all. The same food I had loved before tasted awful to me because the experience completely ruined it. No one checked on us afterward. We had to get our own napkins and anything else we needed. I worked in the restaurant industry for 16 years, so I understand how stressful and difficult the job can be. I've dealt with all kinds of difficult customers, but I still treated people with kindness and respect. I really do love this restaurant, which is exactly why this experience was so upsetting. Outdoor dinning during the winter is the BEST here! Super cute and quaint this location of Underbelly in North Park is most DEFINITELY one of my go to big bowl of soup places in sd! Service is always super fast, you pay up front, then self seating is available near a cute little on table fireplace! It was delicious, but if I were to nitpick, the pork belly chunks are kinda bite size. The flavor is still good, but definitely not the most impressive I've had. The additional pulled pork does help augment, but is not very Japanese, and I don't think fits ramen quite as well in my personal preference. The seaweed was in one giant blanket for some reason. Normally, you would cut this up more. The broth was tasty and super well balanced with the amount of sesame and saltiness. The noodles were also pretty good. One of the better Ramen places you'll find in SD. My fav bowl here is the Belly of the Beast Ramen, add the Fireball spice & it's delicious! The other bowls are good too but this one is my fav. If you have a big appetite like me get the Pork Belly little sandwiches, it's a perfect side with your Ramen Bowl. Miso soup & wings were ok. What I loved tho is their Cucumber salad, went perfect with my spicy Ramen, Dumplings are very good too. Customer service was good from the door to the table to the bar all very attentive & nice. Now it can get busy at times especially dinner so there might be a wait & parking ain't the best. But it's still worth the wait just come before 6 if you don't want to wait too long. I've heard so much about this place online I decided to finally give it a try. You order at and pay and pay at the counter and then take a number and the staff brings you your food. I believe I got the underbelly ramen. It was watered down and didn't have much flavor, I also got the pork belly bites and those were really good they saved the meal. I'll be honest -- my last visit during lunch a while back left a bad taste in my mouth. I waited forever while the cashier was running around delivering food and wiping tables, even though there were already people in line(and I don't think they were short staff) . Felt pretty chaotic and I left kinda annoyed so I ended up leaving. Gave it another shot on my lunch break and wow, total 180! The casual method of ordering upfront and little to no service gives you context of how the atmosphere is here. Totally underwhelming the first time I ever came and on my recent visit. I love the vibes and hidden feeling of this place here in NP, just not a big fan of the food. I got their Belly of the Beast ramen, and everything was completely off. The seaweed and short rib tasted old, the noodles were soggy, and their concept of an oxtail dumpling just didn't work for me. I did like their marinated egg, but that was just about it. It was a bit windy for us so we sat at the bar next to the kitchen. You order at the front and then they bring your food to you. It's open seating and if you have a large party it can be hard to get a table big enough for the whole party if you don't get there before the rush hits. The food was quick to come out. I really love this spot. I actually used to live down the street, so it started as a convenient go-to, but I still come back because the ambiance is great and the ramen is consistently good. I also appreciate that I don't get that heavy MSG aftertaste that I get at some other ramen places. The noodles are flavorful, and they're very generous with the toppings. The belly of the beast comes with dumplings in the ramen. It is order as you walk in and they bring you your food. They are so fast less than 5 minutes and you get your meal. On a rainy day they are very busy. They are great for eating there with lots of outdoor seating and fireplaces and super fun festive cocktail glasses. I love the chicken confit ramen here (trust me!!) and would come more if it were not for the single file line/ordering situation. I think it is by design to control the customer and kitchen flow, but waiting for 30 minutes to order at a counter at full service prices is not ideal. Even the beers take a long time to arrive because it's all ticketed upon ordering upfront. Like other Consortium spots, they know despite the flaws in user experience, people will wait and pay top dollar to order at the counter for a cool vibe. If they change the set up, I'd come more, other wise a cool spot to take guests during off hours to avoid a 30-40 minute line to order. But the jfc had me on the toilet the next day for hours, I was lucky I didn't have to work. Another issue I had was that this seemed like a fairly nice restaurant, but they don't offer wait service. Like imagine you're sitting at a huge, communal concrete table, having to ask every member of your party to let you out to get up and order another drink from the cashier. The best Ramen in northpark. I go here often and I like to get the belly of the beast ramen. It's one of my favorite spots.

Really enjoyed the environment of Underbelly. The food however wasn't very memorable. The Thai curry ramen came with 2 pieces of shrimp, however it was still pretty good.
