My wife and kids and I just got back from a trip around the state, visiting all the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Sites. Driving into town after traveling many long and lonely country roads, we vowed we'd celebrate the end of our journey with ice cream after visiting our final debate site. We had our fingers crossed that Freeport would have an ice cream parlor, or at the least a Dairy Queen. As it turned out, Union Dairy is right next door to where the Second Debate was held. We only ordered ice cream, so I can't speak for the food they serve, but it is mighty, mighty tasty ice cream. I had a malt which was wonderfully chocolatey and malty. The kids liked their Superman ice cream, and my wife had the Tortoise and the Fair. All were well-satisfied. Not a fan of retro-places, but the fifties decor isn't too ridiculous. Debate Square is a pleasant place to hang out before and after as well. read more

The grilled cheese is just BEGGING for a bowl of tomato soup! This little gem of a throwback was fantastic! I personally had the grilled cheese (two slices of thick Texas toast with LOADS of melted cheese) and loaded fries - whoa. Super tasty!! Managed to snag a couple of my daughter's cheese curds as well and they were also quite tasty. Hand dipped shakes and fantastic sundaes- try the basic hot fudge!! I recommend!! - this place was great. The kids also enjoyed sitting at the counter to order and eat. Such a novelty these days. Highly recommend!! read more

Very good burgers, made to order. Friendly atmosphere and service. Great team work! This place can get packed with lines out the door- so keep that in mind. Always a favorite place of mine to bring out of town guests and to grab lunch from. Call to order ahead and save some time! Stop by for some ice cream or a root beer float. Order a shake and split it- you get two full servings. The heated debate is my absolute go to burger. If you enjoy good food with 1950s parlor decor and juke box tunes, this place is for you. read more

A great place to end a great weekend, my husband brought my mother in law and I here after we took a couple of pictures in Lincoln Douglas Debate Square. The restaurant is set up like I imagine it was back in the 50's and serves luscious and creamy Cedar Crest Ice Cream. The servers are teens that don't seem as if they are interested in working such a busy ice cream counter on a warm summer day, but the ice cream was well worth the lackluster service. Would I say this on an average day when I had been here a hundred times before? Probably not. But the newness of the experience and the fact that I love ice cream, especially ice cream at the end of a perfect day has me being a tad lenient. Love this place. A single dip here is like a triple dip elsewhere. Be prepared to wait in the evenings and weekends. It's very busy.

i love this place! except the staff has no clue what they're doing.... me and my friend sat here for about 30 minutes without them being helped and they were out of multiple flavors of ice cream for the sundaes. makes me very sad. read more

Union Dairy (really Alber Ice Cream - but you'll see the Union Dairy sign when you drive up.) - is the place to have Ice Cream in Freeport. Environment is definitely 1950's Ice Cream Parlor. Food (like burgers and chili dogs etc) are newer offering (and 3-star, Ok). But for Ice Cream, its a "Where the Locals Eat" place. Whatever your favorites are, single-scoop is the way to go, double-scoop is really quite a lot for 1 person, and I'm not sure why they even have 3 & 12 scoops on the menu! Best ice-cream ever! The ice cream they serve is Cedar Crest from Wisconsin. There are many flavors to choose from (51 in fact). The atmosphere has an old time feel. This place has been around for a long time, and people still line up to have a taste. They change their hours when fall is near and close over the winter months, so be sure to call or check their website if you plan to visit anytime other than the summer months. read more

Great lunch in an unpretentious, old-school soda fountain. Burgers are yummy, noninstitutional and creatively topped. Shake was tasty and came in the frosty metal cup it was mixed in. Service is friendly and fast. Those paper towel dispensers everywhere? That's your napkin. Sadly, we were too full to taste what looks like homemade German chocolate cake. Next time! read more

This 1950's-style ice cream parlor has great flavors (black cherry ice cream with black cherry halves in each bite, after-dinner mint with generous mint chunks) and heaping servings for a reasonable price. I highly recommend this creamery! read more

If you're visiting Freeport and looking for a dessert treat you must come here. It's a Freeport institution. It's an old fashioned soda fountain type place that's been here for a hundred years. Fun summer night stop on the Harley or whatever! After you're done you can stroll across the parking lot and visit the site of the Lincoln Douglas debate in the cute little park the city has put there in tribute. They have great burgers too. I remember this place from when I was a small child. My mother was born and raised in Freeport and every once in a while we would drive there from Rockford and I would have the best ice cream I ever tasted called Blue Moon. We would also buy I large container of Cheese Potato chips which I heard they no longer make but they were awesome too! I need to have some sent to me. read more
