Someone should answer the phone ! Omg. Can't even get appointment! Tried their online system but go nowhere

I was very baffled today upon arriving to the salon as a "walk in". The stylist asked if she could help me and I said yes, I would like to get a haircut and she said do you have an appointment? I said no, your site on Yelp says "walk ins are welcome" and she said no, that's not true, I'm not sure which site you looked at but that's not correct. I was turned away and told you use the website to book an appointment. At that moment, I no longer felt welcomed. I would highly suggest the owner review what they have on the Yelp page because this is a site that many individuals use when searching for services. For what I thought would be a great experience turned out to be a bad one. read more

I am growing my hair out and thought I no longer wanted a barber. But I also wasn't looking for a spa. I am very happy with my choice. I went in and while their signage spoke of masking up, I was pleased to see everyone was pretty relaxed on the issue. Anyway, I was looking for someone who knew how to trim longer hair for ease of care without shortening. I regret not recalling my cutters name (I'm negligent here always) but she had the chair nearest the front window and was easy to talk to and understood my goal for the visit. I can't make an appointment with them. I filled out Yelp's Book Appointment section. I selected a day and time, and left my name , number, and email address as required. An hour later, I received a text message from 89885 with the message "Appointment cannot be accommodated with Union Hill Salon on [date] due to: I flag any appointment without a name, sorry." I responded, but responses are not allowed; the automatic response told me to contact the business directly. So, I called their phone number: 828-785-1507. No one answered and there is no ability to leave a message, but they did say I could contact the stylist on Union Hill's website. I can't find a website for them, but it looks like Google hosts a page for them. I went to this page, found my stylist, who does not accept messages OR new clients. I don't understand why I was linked with her on Yelp. I hate my long hair. This is incredibly frustrating. I can't contact ANY salons--it's like they are playing games with me, trying to make me insane. read more

I am now a loyal client of Adrienne's and super happy with her work. Her dry cuts ($30) are incredible and, for us wavy and curly-haired girls, basically the same thing as those ridiculously overpriced "Diva" cuts being pushed elsewhere. I really love how easy Adrienne is to talk to and to communicate with about what I'm looking for in a cut. She is very intuitive and "gets" it without a lot of explaining. And let's be honest, haircutting is an art, not a science. It's going to be a little different each time based on humidity, hair washing, how much sleep everyone got the night before, etc. The important thing is to find a stylist like Adrienne whose top priority is to help you realize your vision and make you happy. Cate was a delight! Congenial with good energy that made you feel welcome. She listened closely as we collaborated on the right cut. She has a calm confidence as she created a style that suited me Her manner is gentle and end result was a beautiful cut that showed her experience and skill level. The salon is eclectic and comfortable. I highly recommend UHS if you're looking for an affordable cut/style with highly skilled professionals. Anne Gellen is wonderful! I had long curly frizzy, dry and brittle hair, it had been a year since my last haircut, and she did an amazing job. She gave me exactly what I was looking for, no time wasted, very pleasant conversation, I felt the most comfortable I've ever felt in a hairdresser's chair. I'm a fan of this Salon. I've been here before on and off with different stylists and have no been disappointed with haircuts. Service included in price is hit or miss though depending on the stylist. The price of the haircut varies between $25-30 which I think is fair. For the price I would think it would include a hair wash since you know that's the best part. If you are gonna charge $30 for a haircut I think a wash should be included. I get that you want to get as many clients in as you can but when the service feels rushed you feel cheated. If your not you could inform you clients on your price list so you are aware what you are getting for the price. read more

I must confess that I have really high standards for hair stylists...and Anne Gellen at Union Hill Salon did not disappoint...she listened, and gave me exactly what I wanted. I love my new bob and my hair looks fantastic! The salon itself is low-key and relaxed and I felt completely comfortable there on my first visit. Tonya is a magician. She did EXACTLY what I wanted even though I'm a horrible hair-do describer haha. Took my recently colored dark rooted hair to a silvery blond. Magic I tell you. It's perfect! Very chill Indy salon on Haywood! Great haircut! I spotted Tonya out front and asked if she could give me a cut. She squeezed me in as a walk in and put her 10 years of experience to work. She really has some scissor skills!! With just a few questions asked/answered, she gave me exactly what I wanted. Wash and cut was only $20. Union Hill is a new salon in West Asheville. The salon is home to four independent hair stylists. While you can definitley do a walk-in, this is the place where you go to have your haircut or styled by "your" stylist, someone whom you have or plan to develop a business relationship with that lasts years. These ladies are cool and quirky. If you are new to town and are desperately looking to find that new stylist or your current stylist is getting too cool for school and you are looking to see what else is out there, I highly recommend you give them a call. I have been a client of one of these operators, Jen, for over 3 years and she gives the best mens cut I've ever had. What she does with scissors others have to do with clippers. I'm a super loyal kinda person. I have wanted to find a person to give me a truly great cut for several years. It's been disappointing, time after time, stylist after stylist would rely on products upon products, tools upon tool, 15 minutes to cut, 45 to style. Next day? Just wanna spit. So, I booked with Jen on line. Sight unseen, but reading the reviews here, I thought what the heck. I did come prepared, I had a picture, it wasn't complicated, she agreed it would be something my hair would do well. Inverted Bob. I had 4 things I wanted to point out that I wanted to avoid, she had words for the things I wanted, actual words that made it clear to me that she heard and understood what I was saying. Oh, and I had dyed my hair the night before and just let it be, no product, no styling tools. Booked the first appointment of the day, so I just brushed my hair in the morning and went to the salon...so she could see what she was really working with. As soon as she began, I could feel what she was doing and I relaxed. I knew I was in good hands. A few minutes later...no product! No curling irons, no trying to sell me on a bunch of stuff to make my hair do something because the cut was crap. Just my hair, doing what it does, AND looking honestly good. Went to work, 8 hours later & my hair looks good, cause it is...its happy, its free to be itself. I will also say, its a chipper little place, but everyone has the room they need to work, music was great, but the atmosphere was let's do this, and get you on your merry way.... really really pleased, thank you Jen. my hair thanks you, too. read more

This place was a wonderful find for me as a new West Asheville resident. There are ALOT of choices in West and I am so happy that I chose Union Hill as my go-to spot. I went in after letting my hair grow for way too long(ahem.. Over a year)... Gave basically no instruction but a vague indication of desired length and Adrienne did a fabulous cut that was just right for me! Wonderful full stylist and mind reader too! I couldn't have asked for more. To top it off I brought my almost three year old son in to get his hair cut three days later and she was wonderful with him. He clearly thought the place was cool, and his hair looks great! Thank you, and I promise I won't wait another year to get my hair cut. read more

Ugh, it happened AGAIN! I thought going to a hair stylist was supposed to be fun, not emotionally painful. I want to be heard, I want to matter, I want to be listened to. I'm 54. When I ask a stylist to trim the minimal amount off the bottom of my long wavy hair (in this case 1/2-1 inch, which I thought generous), I know that is what I want. I am paying someone money to help me maintain my hair the way I want it to be, right? Why do stylists think I don't really know what I want? This stylist started to trim my hair from the back. I couldn't see what she was doing. As she moved to the side, I saw that not only was she "trimming" about 3-4", she was layering each piece as she went. When I said, "That isn't 1/2-1 !", she told me that it would still "look long" because of the tapered cut. Then she told me I still had "plenty of hair" and pulled the sides forward over my shoulders so I could see my hair in the mirror. I literally felt this tumbling inside my body. But I didn't WANT layered ends! That's what I said looked straggly in the beginning! And I didn't want 3-4"cut off! She made some comment about "people who are so attached to their hair" and told me I'd "like this cut". I told her that it had taken me a long time to get my hair to be this length - that it used to break off. She instantly concluded I must not have gotten it cut enough and, even though I'd told her my last trim was 8-9 months ago, asked accusingly, "So was it two years ago?" "No, 8-9 months," I replied, "and it doesn't break off any more!" (it was actually 7.5 months - I checked.) So now I'm a liar too? She then asked if I was displeased with the cut. I said I couldn't really see it (it was down my back, right?) to which she commented, "Why can't you see your own hair.?" I asked for a hand mirror and, with dread, looked at the back. The ends looked straggly but not as short as I dreaded. She picked up a shorter piece off the floor and told me it was "just 1 inch" and that the pile of hair "wasn't much". Surrounding me were 3-4-inch hunks. I paid her and left. I mean, I assume she thought she was doing me a favor and I know she was trying to do a good job, BUT COMMUNICATE! If she didn't think she could cut just 1/2-1' for whatever reason, say so! SO yes, I was VERY dissatisfied - by layering my hair she undid what took me years to try to fix. I have to learn to live with it now - that isn't the same as feeling great about my hair (and the money spent). But what's hardest to let go is my need to matter, to be heard, and for respect. I will say I sent this to the salon and got an immediate response from my stylist. She said she refunded my money and expressed empathy, which I appreciated. What was missing was communication about she planned to do before she did it. If she had explained that she was going to layer the ends, I'd have immediately said no. I like my hair to look full and even at the ends. I like a blunt look. My hair is thin and, when layered, the ends look wimpy. I hate that. I've worked hard to get the length as even as possible, which is why I knew I needed a trim - because it was looking straggly. Now I'll have to wait for these layers to grow out and will have to keep the length shorter to try to accommodate those shorter layers. Super frustrated by this. read more

Cate listened to me ramble, very carefully assessed my hair, and also was very informative of what she was planning on doing. I feel refreshed! The place is super cool, welcoming, and inclusive. This salon is ideal. Small and quirky without being overwhelming, and in the heart of west asheville. Nikki cut my hair and did an incredible job. They really listened to my needs as a transgender person and helped me determine what kind of cut would get me the look I wanted. They charge very reasonable rates based on hair length rather than on gender, which took so much of the stress out of my experience. I can't recommend Nikki or this salon enough, everyone working here has 10+ years experience, is respectful, and I must say my hair looks great! read more
