I got a haircut here with Madison before the hourly all inclusive pricing. I had researched hair cutters in the Asheville area who were well versed in cutting naturally curly hair and that was how I came to choose her. At the time, I was living in Stecoah Valley (Graham County) and it would take me an hour and a half to get to the salon, but because I have a long history of subpar haircuts, I felt it would be worth the time and effort. I was the first appointment of her day on a Saturday morning, and I knew that I wanted to be punctual for her, because I understand how it can impact a stylist's entire days schedule when they have tardy clients. I foolishly expected the same courtesy and respect for time to be extended to me. When I was roughly 30 minutes away from the Salon I received a phone call from reception asking if they could push my appointment out by half an hour. I let them know that I had other plans that day that I might end up being late for if I could not leave the salon at the same time. Long story short, they kept my appointment as it was and Madison walked through the door at my original appointment time. My haircut was technically sound, but the bangs were way too short, which is commonly what usually happens to me. My husband called them "toddler length" because they were the length that we used to give our daughter's bangs so that we could go longer between trimming. During the haircut I asked for a price for highlights and was taken aback by what I was quoted and realized that even though I had short hair and only average density, Madison's prices were what I would expect for hair that is more labor intensive (longer, thicker, denser). For reference, if I were to book 3 hours with Madison under the current all inclusive pricing, it would cost me less than the price range that she quoted me. I have NEVER heard of such exorbitant prices before and I was coming from a California economy. Overall, I've had better haircuts and several more worse ones, but based on the experience that I had here I wasn't going to be going back. The salon seems to have a high end vibe, but they did not deliver a high end experience at all. read more

Teryn is a phenomenal colorist and is great with layering long hair. It's so hard to find a salon/stylist who vibes with your vibes, and as a Maryland resident, I wait until my bi-annual trips to Asheville to visit family to get my hair colored/cut by Teryn -- she is professional, creative, cool, kind, and chill, which is worth the wait (and the drive)! I'm a premature gray and always ask Teryn to weave some of my grays into the blonde blends she creates, and her final coloring of my hair always comes out flawless and looking organic/natural. Great place for a splurge. They take time and use amazing products. Went here last year and had a not so great experience with Courtney (randomly stated she just got a raise and charged me more at the last second. And she never talked but the cut was good.) this time it was spectacular. They use a lot of product but it's good. Love davines. The momo is great for my wavy hair that frizzes. Stylists listen to you. My hair looked a bit choppy. Think the lady (Kimberly) didn't know how to cut thick hair as well as some do. She said "oh this is thick" a million times and then "if you don't like it, come back". So I called after hating it for a month. Then they said you have to reschedule within a week. That would have been nice to know. They offered a discount but I'll go somewhere else next time. read more

I have always appreciated the heck out of my hair stylist. Maybe it's because of flashbacks to bang trims gone wrong or the perm I wasn't talked out of in middle school - to be fair, I insisted - but I learned early on that having a skilled professional help guide me in my hair journey is a big deal. In San Diego, my stylist/roommate taught me how a girl with a huge cowlick CAN tame her hair into blunt bangs. In San Francisco (then, by chance, in Raleigh, NC), my friend Jenny helped me understand color, taking my dark, thick hair to the Shakira blonde I always wanted. I had been super hesitant to let anyone touch my hair since moving to Asheville, but I am so thankful to have found Skip Boman. I was craving a change, swooning over pictures of 70's shag hairstyles, but not entirely certain I could pull it off. I was ready to change color again, but to what?! I have a wedding coming up in August and was also hesitant to make any drastic moves before then. Enter Skip. Connected through a friend of a friend on social media, she was receptive to me sending some pictures before my appointment (in lieu of a consultation). Day of, our conversation before the cut itself was easy and informative. She explained key products to use during styling to really enhance my natural curls. She refined the cut to shag perfection, and discussed a plan for upcoming appointments, in preparation for what I want my hair to look like on the daily but also for my wedding. She made the experience easy, fun, and her 10 years as a stylist was obvious. The anxiety about trusting someone with my hair fell away and I am obsessed with my cut. It is better than what I pictured - light, with tons of volume, and fringe growing out to frame my face just so. I can't wait for my color appointment. First off, I guess I didn't give my stylist a good idea of what I was wanting? She didn't really ask any questions so I just assumed her and I were on the same page. Long story short, I got some color and an undercut done.. I'm not sure if this particular stylus worked with undercuts and colored hair a lot. But I definitely was not happen after coming home. Nor did the stylus really show me my hair before leaving. Basically I only got a good look at it when I was at home. The undercut looks uneven, you can't really see the design. How she colored my hair wasn't what I wanted at all. I paid over $300 (including tip) and i was very unhappy. It honestly looked like I did my hair at my house. The quality just wasn't there. I ended up called and they scheduled for me to come in the next day at 10. I guess my stylist and I weren't on the same page, again. She ended up dying mostly all of my hair blue, instead of the blonde pieces that were left out. My favorite part of my hair was the ends, but now instead of the beautiful light blue and white, it's just all blue. I'm just super disappointed in how this turned out. My stylist is listed as a master stylist and I had very high hopes. I just recommend researching your stylist first, because they might just book you with a stylist that doesn't have a lot of experience with the cut and style that you want. I do love this company and will be coming back but will be asking for someone else. read more

There are much better ways to run a business. I've been getting a nice, straightforward bob haircut for about $65. Today I was told they are switching to an "hourly model" and my next haircut would be $125. $125!!!! For a haircut - and this isn't NEW YORK CITY! This, even though today's shampoo/haircut only took 45 minutes. No mention of prorating for less than an hour - you know, the way lawyers do. So big surprise, I'm going to find someone new. I Really do not like having to call a stylist out on his work. I would much rather that the salon do the right thing and refund my money. As you will see in the screenshots they are refusing. I paid 65.00 for a cut in April 8 at west location. I brought a picture, had a consultation and clearly agreed on a cut with the stylist. See pictures to see how it turned out. Huge chunks of hair gone from my head....2 inch difference between layers with noticable cut marks. 2-3 inch difference in left and right side of my head. Not just a bad haircut...we have all had those. But literally butchered my hair. *yelp won't let me upload photos but I will figure out how to upload on other review sites and share. Trust me when I say that my hair is butchered. The salon refuses a reund but will gladly 'fix' it. I wouldn't let anyone in that salon near my hair again. This place is fabulous. Today was my first time here, and no knowledge of who my hair dresser was, other than that's who I chose online. Let me just say Michele is fantastic! She is so professional, and gives you a great experience. I absolutely LOVE my haircut and before you leave her chair she asks you if there is anything else you need and to make sure you're satisfied. From the time you walk in the door you are greeted with a friendly smile, they give you a tour and ask you if you would like anything to drink. From an overly hyped salon in The Mission in San Francisco to an overly fluorescent Great Clips, from Rapunzel lengths to a buzz cut, I've learned to not care about my hair. I come to Kendall and like this salon a lot. I either get a haircut or color and a cut. They are right next to the Wedge and have tons of parking. The place looks like an old garage they made into a hair salon, changing artwork on the wall is for sell too! The service is quick and good and everybody is very friendly. Occasionally I find myself in a pinch to get a haircut and branch-out from my normal, several locations salon, due to wanting same day availability. Ananda Hair Salon was accommodating in that regard. The receptionist was kind and welcoming over the phone booking my same day, first visit appointment. They were equally so when I arrived. I was immediately offered a few beverage options (water, tea, beer) while I waited and I opted for the local bottled beer. Great! I was familiar with the space, having been there for an art show once. It's reflective of the downtown Asheville vibe. My stylist took her time with the consultation, ensuring she understood what I wanted and didn't want. My shampoo and condition didn't feel rushed. Same with the cut. While I was happy with my cut, it was a little too choppy for my liking, but this also has to do with me being so accustomed to the method of cutting my hair dry and then spending that much time again with texturizing and smoothing-out lines. With that said, by no means will this keep me from coming back for another service. I purchased some hair product upon leaving and my tab was exactly what I imagined it would total up to. I just had my second visit to this salon. When I was there in Jan 2022, I had full head highlights and a haircut, plus a blowdry and style. I paid $174 (I checked my bank statement to be sure). At the time I was advised that they were shifting to a new pricing system where we would pay hourly for any services that we received. It was explained that this is a new gender-free, all inclusive (including tips) system that was better for everyone. I was skeptical, especially after seeing the hourly rates by stylist that they were posting. However, this is one of two salons in town that uses Davines color, so I thought I would give it a try. I booked myself for a two color color, no cut, just the usual blowdry and style. After receiving my color, there was about 15-20 minutes remaining. The stylist dried my hair, using minimal product, and no attempt at styling it. Literally, she just dried my hair. I do more on my own at home. Round brush? Anything? When she showed me the back of my hair, I commented that it was frizzy, and I had flyaways or broken hair sticking out from the middle of my head. Even doing my own hair at home I don't have this. She just told me it would go away as my hair grew and suggested I might put some curl in my hair later before heading out of town. Really? Maybe she was hoping I would add another paid service to fix it. The color itself was adequate. Nothing special. I sure didn't leave feeling good about myself, like I usually expect after visiting the salon. When I checked out, the all inclusive cost was $270 - $100 more than I paid last time without receiving a haircut or any attempt at a style. I was concerned enough about what the back of my head looked like, I put on a hat when I left, which I have NEVER had to do before after any salon. I did in fact have to go home to do something with my hair before heading out of town. Paid more, received less, and I was unhappy when I left. This system might be upfront about costs, but this price structure in no way benefits their clients, and it ensures a higher than average gratuity whether it was earned or not. I would rather drive 2 hours to Knoxville to see my former salon than experience this again. Even at current prices, the gas would be less than the upcharge. read more

I recently moved to Asheville and had a very faded, sad-looking ombré that desperately needed some reviving, but was very nervous about finding a new salon. My experience from scheduling a consult to my new balayage style was excellent and professional. The salon is very clean with a cool atmosphere and has plenty of parking right outside. Everyone was very friendly and my stylist, Moira took the time needed to give me the look I was hoping for. I've visited this salon twice. My first experience was subpar. The stylist was not great, I felt like I was being rushed over. Today I went in and got my haircut by Keelin and it totally made up for my past experience. She asked me specific questions about what I wanted to do with my hair, in a language I could understand. While we talked a bit, I enjoyed that she was respectful of me relaxing and not overly pushy with making conversation. I have very thick hair that takes a long time to blow dry; not once did I feel rushed or like she was doing a half-assed job because she was pressed for time. This hair studio gives the best haircuts, service, and has some pretty cool vibes. Located next to the old Wedge brewery by the Haywood bridge, this salon features different artist every few months and displays their work on the walls. I've never had to wait longer than 10 minutes for my appointment. My hair is pretty easy to cut - it's straight and fine, but it has been surprisingly hard to find a hair studio that I like. Their prices are reasonable and you get great service every time. I've also tried balayage on my hair for the first time and loved it! The hair stylist made it look natural and didn't overdo it. And it was only $100! I can't wait to go back and try something even more dramatic. My friend goes to the one downtown and has had equal success with it. Amazing blowout experience here with Sarah & Ari. While visiting from Cali to see my friend here in Asheville we decided we wanted to get our hair done one afternoon. We were able to secure 2 appointments same-day on a Friday afternoon with Sarah & Ari. We were both super happy with the results and left feeling like sparkly movie stars. Plus, we had a lovely adult beverage while getting styled. Super hip setting (exposed brick, roll up door, industrial vibe). Oh....and the hair product!!!! I've been going to Ananda for three years. They're not cheap, but you get great service. My stylist is Kendall, and he's been incredible. Every cut I've gotten has been top notch and grown out beautifully. He always has suggestions for maintenance and doesn't try to push product on you. They send you email reminders on appointments, as well as a phone call if you ask. You also get your choice of alcoholic beverage, or tea/water. The added bonus with the West location is you can always stop in at Bull & Beggar for food and cocktails, or hit the Wedge for a pint. read more

I had my hair dyed two days ago in a salon in CA, and the results were terrible. On my trip to NC, we called ananda west and asked if they could squeeze me in for an appointment. My hair stylist, Kendall, did a fantastic job!!! She had her work cut out for her since she had to correct such a bad dye job but she did amazingly! The results were beautiful. I came to Ananda West to have my wedding hair trial done by Hanna and had a great experience! Hanna works fast and does a beautiful job. I absolutely loved the up-do she gave me-- it was the perfect synthesis of all the Pinterest photos I showed her! I'm not used to having my hair done for formal occasions, so I was a little nervous about all the texturizers/hairspray involved, but the products they use at AW are awesome and natural and they smell like heaven. They certainly toot their own horns here at this place. The first stylist used a razor on my coarse, thick wavy hair which is a "no-no" for my type hair. He also proceeded to put color all over my head instead of just touching up roots. I have never in my life had such a horrible outcome. My hair was so dark (I'm a blonde) and matte. It was drab with no shine or life and so dry. I did give this salon another chance and booked with another hair stylist. The color was good, cut was ok, but looked nothing like the picture I gave to her. I went a second time to the same stylist and could tell the cut was not good and she had no idea how I wore my hair even though I had it styled the way I wear it upon coming in. When she was through with the cut she told her shampoo assistant to blow my hair out and told her to blow it all forward as she had a consultation with another client. I did forget to say that this girl is considered a "master" stylist with "master" stylist prices. So this assistant puts product in my hair and proceeds to blow my hair out and it was looking awful. I told her I never use a brush, only my fingers, and she then gets out a brush. I took the picture out of my purse to show her how I wear my hair and that's when she got the "master" stylist and said "help me out here". Stylist rewashed my hair, made a few adjustments with the cut and blew it out. It looked awful. I WILL NEVER go back to this salon. This stylist did say she is a perfectionist and to not be surprised if she would give me a call after a haircut to come back in for a adjustment that she had been thinking about that she felt she didn't do right. My Daughter and I happened upon this beautiful salon on a recent visit to Asheville. Her hair is very long, she's a teenager and when she gets it cut, it usually looks cleaned up and that is about it. I suggested she come here mainly for the experience. Amanda, who cut her hair, is an artist. My daughter walked in looking like an awkward teenager and came out looking like a movie star.
