Sale day was crazy, so parking was a pain. Their selection is amazing, given that most of the goodwills are 1/10th this size in the area. However, Goodwills are MUCH cheaper. even on their sale day (50% off) kids stuff was still 1.99-5.99 depending on the item. I like that goodwill has a flat price ($1) for children's stuff up to size 6 and on 50% off days its 50cents. Unique is great, and certainly cheaper than buying brand new, but you can get the same stuff, albeit smaller selection, at goodwill. read more

I will say this place is unique. It is a large scale thrift shop that has everything second hand. It has a large parking lot in a shopping center where many people come to. Turning into this place is rough but it is expected. The facility is well lit, but dusty. Something I kind of expect at a thrift store in a way. It is always crowded also, which means that there is a good rotation of product on the shelf. If you see something you want, you should get it. It probably won't be there the following day. They also provide discounts on certain days of the week, which is pretty awesome. I think it was a membership discount and a day for seniors. The employees were somewhat non-existent on the sales floor and the cashiers are somewhat in their own world, however, they are efficient. I get through the lines quick, but they do get crowded as I said earlier. One thing I do have an issue is the donation process. At one point, I was cleaning up my house to prepare for a move and I brought over a bunch of stuff I would like to donate. The person receiving the donation was very picky as to what I am allowed to donate, going through all the possessions and setting aside some stuff which I assumed was for himself and then set aside stuff for which I think was for the store. Overall, he opened my bags of clothing and left a mess in my car. I am not sure how the process is, however communication would have been important through the whole process instead of having an employee rip through the bags. Overall, my shopping experience there is great, but when it comes to donations, I would be ready for a search. read more

OMG. This place is sooo goooood. I live in Rockville MD and their unique does not compare with this one. This place has better stuff and it's way bigger. My only complaint and the reason why there isn't 5 is because In the back of the store there is so good stuff and we want to get it but we can't because it says employees only and that was really bad because I was looking for a bike and there were bikes in my size back there but I couldn't get them because it was employees only. I think perhaps some of the previous reviewers are spoiled by some of the other (sub-par) thrift stores in the area, with complaints about dressing rooms and the surliness factor of the staff. As for incomplete merchandise...buyer inspect and buyer beware. To those points, and a list of what I believe constitutes a super-awesome thrift experience (it's not really a store but a place where random shit gets together and makes friends...or a adoption center/pound for under-appreciated stuff): - Does the thrift have a large volume of stuff? Yes - It it well organized and labeled (sizes, spacing, etc.) Yes! - Do you have room to move around the stuff and other thrifters? Yes! - Does it smell? Yes but not terrible...it's a region-wide collection of used people's stuff...it kind always smells like that. - Can you find one-of-a-kind, I've-never-seen-that-at-a-thrift-store-before stuff? Yes! - Do they have decent prices and/or sales? Yes I don't know the stocking schedule or how often they rotate the stock...I never was that hardcore of a thrifter. But I used to supplement my meager NoCal income with books and western-wear shirts and found a few decent items for resale here. In the grand karmeric traditions of thrifters, I left anything I wasn't going to read or could not fit into (there are some awesome western shirts in XL as of this past Friday...) there for the next group. I'll be the first to preface that thrifting is not for everyone and it's a hobby that you have to be in the mood for - I definitely used to be one of those people who was completely grossed out by picking through a stranger's secondhand items and actually spending money on them. With that being said though, Unique has definitely changed my mindset and won me over. This place is a thrifter's dream: it is literally a warehouse full of everything you could imagine ranging from clothes and houseware to Walkmans from the 90s and even old engraved soccer trophies. I've been here a handful of times and have been most recently impressed with their complete reorganization of the whole store. What seemed barely manageable before is now nicely labeled in each respective section which is amazing for a thrift shop of this size. I mostly browse the clothing and accessory sections and have walked away with some great finds for extremely cheap prices, i.e. a Southwestern print vintage sweater for $6?! I'll definitely take it. Everything here is carefully selected and cleaned beforehand but just use your best judgement with your purchases if you're worried. So if you're up to it, grab a friend, turn up Macklemore, and have fun searching through the various racks here. You never know what you'll end up coming across! read more

I'm just a 20-something girl whose closet consists of mainly casual t-shirts and jeans with too many holes in them. I recently got a job that required me to wear a white blouse and black knee length skirt to work. I was freaking out that I wouldn't be able to find the outfit without spending an arm and a leg before my start date. My coworker suggested that I stopped by Unique because she said they have a very large selection of clothes. I was reluctant but figured I didn't have much to lose so I went with her one afternoon. We spent 30 minutes and found myself a very professional looking white blouse and black skirt for $10 and with a 25% off coupon I ended up having only to pay $8!!!! What a bargain!!!! Needless to say, I was a very happy girl and I showed up to my new job looking all nice and fancy....and nobody knew I got my outfit at a thrift store ;) My only problem with this store is that they do not have changing rooms :l read more

I heard about this place through Reddit, where people were saying it was the biggest and best thrift store in the area. Biggest - sure. Best - ahahaha, no. I went to get some toddler clothes, DVDs, maybe a book or two to read, and a toy for the toddler because she was with me. The toddler clothing section was pretty sad, the books were also pretty sad, I bought two DVDs and I *was* going to buy a toy for my daughter. However, when we got to the cash register the toy didn't have a price sticker on it, so after waiting five minutes to see if someone could put a price on it, they tried to sell it to me for...10 DOLLARS! I literally could buy it new on Amazon for the same price. I didn't buy the toy and left without a whole lot of items and a whole lot of regret driving 45 minutes in the car to buy so little. The.store has done away with dressing rooms. I purchased 4 top sheet -bottom sheet combos marked Queen. Two were twin and two were double when I got them home. No exchanges on linens. Prices by bed size so paid Queen prlces for twins and doubles. Do not even have any twin beds. Rip off.Only improvement is check oit now has self checkout spots so paying is faster. read more

NOPE. I have been wanting to stop here for the past 3 years, and since a few Elites gave it pretty good reviews, I dove in. ... And then hit my head on the cement pool floor. Parking here is terrible. Not only are there too few spots for the amount of people/cars, the spots themselves are suuuper tight. I waited 4 minutes for one car to back out, only to find the mini-van they were parked next to was sitting on the line and I had to find another spot in order to assure no one's door (including mine) got scratched. There was a sign about no public trespassing when I walked up to the door. I saw some people dropping donations off right next to the main door, and then this sign made me wonder if this was the right entrance or if this was actually a store instead of a donation center. The fact that what you see through the door is just concrete stairs and a landing didn't help that. And then once I walked up those and a few feet in, I saw some bodega/flea market style shops selling knock-off purses and accessories BLASTING music. Seven minutes after I pulled in to the parking lot, I'm still not sure what exactly I'm entering. Finally, when I bypass those, I realize it is more like a typical thrift store. It smelled bad and was super crowded. I did like the way they hung the pants so you could see what they looked like without having to thumb through them. But, I was here for home decor and furniture so I continued to the back of the store. Some really cheap chairs ($6.99) but really terrible quality, and kids playing and running on everything EVERYWHERE. Nothing at all worth buying around the back or far side of the store. This store is a hot mess and stresssses me out. No thanks. read more

I have been back a few times. First off, Monday mornings there will be a line outside of regulars because this is the time to come, 25% off the entire store no card needed. While you are there, register (driver's license required) for a Unique Thrift Savings Card which allows you to also save 25% on Thursdays, all day! They have a limited book selection but I attribute that to that fact that they carry current books and they fly off the shelves! I purchased the Twilight set as gift for $5, I was able to find all three books though it did take three trips. They often have globes, which I love for some reason but still have yet to own. Plenty of shoes, often name brand, though a bit may be "well-worn." Plenty of baby clothes for cheap but as the child gets older the pickings get slimmer. Toys are a revolving item so if you see it and like it buy it because if you put it down it will be gone! I found an Italian designer wool woven hat $2; rabbit fur gloves from Spain $8; huge box of Mega Blox for $8 (plus my 25% saving ;p); gobs of tea and hand towels which I buy to donate to shelters each for under $1 some in matching sets. As soon as I stepped into this place, I immediately felt overwhelmed... I'm used to the smaller Goodwill and Salvation Army stores that I've been to in the past. This place was HUGE! We decided to just to a 'quick' walk through, just to get an idea of the place. While you wouldn't have expected to find much at first glance, there are definitely some hidden gems to be found. Spent most of my visit perusing the dishware, cooking appliances, and used books. I will definitely come back again if only for the books (all the paperbacks I saw were 99 cents and I think most of the hard covers were less than $3! lots of selection, just leave before your pile gets too big!) I did not even venture into the clothing section... otherwise we would have likely been there another hour or so. Will have to come back to wander through the endless aisles. But, passing through the accessories, I did pick up a hot pink belt for a couple dollars to go along with my ensemble for 80s night! read more

Let me first say Thank you to my fellow Yelpers for all of their reviews on this place. Everyone is pretty much dead on. I went to Unique this morning around 10:30 thinking I would spend an hour shopping around...next thing I know its 1:00pm and I have a cart full of things! In my defense I did need work clothes and hey, who can turn down Banana Republic sweaters and button ups for $3.99? Not this girl! I applaud the store workers for keeping the place as neat as they possibly can with the amount of clothes that are in this store. Kudos people. I found some pretty good things...I did end up leaving the store with 24 items ranging from Jones New York, Banana Republic, Express, The Limited, Ellen Tracy, Hollister and American Eagle all for under $6 a piece..that's about 22 over what I anticipated buying lol but what the hell. I needed it. I found a pair of Couch slingbacks that were only 5 bucks! Too bad they were a size 9 =/ oh yeah and I found a white market/black market black lace dress for $12 bucks...too bad that was a 10...I should have bought it anyway =/ I will admit some of the clothing can be overpriced. Who in their right mind would mark a Target Mossimo shirt for $5? You could easily buy the same thing from Target brand new at the store. But thats about the only gripe I had about the place. Come well dressed. I always come with a cardigan and tank top and leggings in case I decide to try on a skirt or pants. It did some in handy. For the new ladies coming to shop here, stay away from the Men's section when you plan on trying on any clothes...there were some weirdos staring at me while I tried on shirts. Have you ever been moving out of an apartment or something, and you find yourself making a huge pile of worthless stuff that you don't have the energy to actually pack, but you feel bad throwing it all away ("these are perfectly good hair ties, SOMEONE COULD USE THESE"), so you end up guiltily shoving it all into a Goodwill box? Shopping here is like looking through the stuff everybody else didn't feel like packing when they moved. For instance, If you need a frying pan, sure, you'll be excited to see the shelf with a hundred frying pans on it, but they only have a hundred of them because thousands of people have looked at them before you, and they all said to themselves "this is not worth even $2.00," and then they didn't buy a frying pan. A few aisles down from the frying pans, there is a huge decoration section that includes plaques with other people's names on them and pictures of other people's youth soccer teams and artwork crafted by other people's young children. If you suddenly have to go into Witness Protection and you need some personal artifacts to shore up your new backstory, this is the place to go. I've heard a lot of people say that this place is really great for clothes. Personally, I was able to find a great winter coat and some cute dresses here a few years ago, but in the last couple of years I just haven't been able to find anything worth taking home. This place is fun to poke around in, but if you actually want to, like, get things, I'd recommend a smaller, more selective place where you'll be able to find good stuff without sifting through quite as much nonsense, like the Inova thrift store, which is close by and sometimes even cheaper than Unique. read more

So happy that there's a gi-normous thrift store in Northern VA! When you enter Unique, no matter how experienced you are with thrifting, it's seriously overwhelming in the beginning. HUGE warehouse but thankfully, everything is well-labeled in English and Spanish and it's clean! I've managed to find some nice clothing items from Lilly Pulitzer, The Limited, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor - all in great condition at reasonable prices. I also recommend hitting up Unique the next time you're looking for a Halloween costume; there's nothing cooler than a homemade costume and with the amount of clothes for sale, you're bound to find something for your kickass costume. I'm also a big fan of their Home Goods section; sure, a lot of it you probably would never need but you never know what you'll find. I bought a ton hangers (still in great condition) for a fraction of the price had I bought them brand-new. They have TONS of books for sale and they're all neatly organized by category (fiction, non-fiction, history, etc.) As with any second-hand store, make sure you thoroughly check your items to make sure it's still in good condition (stains, missing a belt, seams are coming undone, etc.). And it's true, you need to have the patience and be totally in the mood when you're at Unique (or really any thrift store). I am an AVID thrift store shopper, and this is honestly my favorite thrift store ever. Unfortunately, I no longer live in the area, but any time I'm near DC, I always stop here. The selection just can't be beat, and if you happen to be there on a 50% off day, you likely will not leave without 20 items. I have found some of my all-time favorite items (especially work dresses) here for around $5-7. I signed up for their VIP membership (which is free) and it was definitely worth it, if just to be notified when the 50% off days were coming up. read more

I really do love Unique. I am the definition of frequent shopper there and would most other days give it a 5, but I was appalled when I went today. I was looking through a rack of clothing when one of the workers came up to me extremely rudely, saying, "Excuse me, let me put the stuff in the store, THANK YOU." Wow. Okay.. I paid for what I had and left. This is a THRIFT STORE raising money for veterans and disease research. I've been here twice. Once in 2013, once in 2017. Overall I quite like Unique, but with a few caveats. This place is large, crowded, and dusty. I've bought a lot of secondhand clothing from other places, but I'd never do it here. Just walking past the clothing aisles made me feel itchy. The furniture section is tiny and the random chairs and tables scattered about look totally janky and like they're about to fall apart the next minute. However, what I think Unique is REALLY good for is small home goods. Cute, almost-new stuff that would sell for 2x or 3x the price at Target. Think bowls, picture frames, candles, hand towels, figurines, cushions, kitchenware, curtains, etc. I picked up a set of 7 wooden bowls for less than $5, for example. Don't come here looking to fill a void in your household needs. Just come in with an open mind and you'll probably find something you didn't even know you wanted. The reason why I did not give it 5 stars is because they increased their prices on many items... but still good! On holidays everything is 50% off so needless to say the place turned into a zoo. This is a really large thrift store and has a huge variety of things. I've only looked through the clothes once because it gets really warm in here and I just didn't have the patience but I did leave with a great name brand work shirt for $2. I like looking at the variety of things they have here but it definitely is a place I have left empty handed from which is kind of surprising considering how big it is. My father in law hasn't had the greatest luck with their cds/dvds, he says they are always scratched. The place is kind of overwhelming, there is a lot of junk, as I said it gets really warm, and I don't get the feeling it is a very clean place but the furniture prices are good. My fiance and I got a fabulous all wood table for our patio room for $20. Oh and the parking lot is always a mad house. read more

This is one of my go-to thrift stores. (I often go here, the Goodwill and Clocktower Thrift on the same day) There are racks and racks and racks and racks! Make sure to bring your walking shoes, game face, and hand sanitizer! Sign up for the customer loyalty program so you get a discount on Thursdays. Everyone gets a discount on Monday's. If you are lucky enough to be free on a holiday, they often have a 50% sale. Weekends are very busy. I am fortunate to be able to go mid-week mid-day. I never have to fight on the racks, which is nice. There are many people working at this thrift store which means new stock is constantly being added and the racks are well maintained. There is a fitting area that you typically don't have to wait too long to get into. Parking is easy, the lot is big. I have found a great selection of sweaters for winter. Occasionally I find some shoes I like, but they are priced a bit high. Also, don't forget the counters in the front of the store. They hold what they think are the best shoes, purses, and coats by the registers. Also, the jewelry counter is in the corner too. Happy thrifting! read more

Was ultra excited about this place because it came highly recommended for our vintage clothes hunting day. Pulling up into parking lot, the building looked so gigantic that we decided to gas up at Chinese restaurant next door before going in. Finally feeling ready to go inside, I got all giddy because it felt like we walked into an IKEA building full of used items, door greeter, cart ramp and all. There are flea markety type vendors in the front area before reaching the main thrift part. I headed directly to dress racks as always. For the size of this store, the dress selection was surprisingly small. Scored an awesome one and a several others I could work with. Moving on to purses and belts, the prices were way high! There were 1 or 2 cute old bags I could work with, but they were all priced at $20+. For non-branded purses at a thrift where you have to dig, I think that's a little high. Belts were $5 and up. All in all, it wasn't as productive as expected. read more

Unique is a great thrift store, and they have recently added fitting rooms! Yeah! Just wear comfortable shoes, and pack your patience because you will have to invest some time to make this work, and you will deal with a crowded parking lot and crowded aisle. My advice: keep your cool, be kind, and know we're all in this thing together. Yep, just keep smiling! To give you an idea of how you'll be rewarded, I'll tell you my most recent find: a $119 skirt from Jones New York for $12.99. Cool right! My major criticisms here are ... The bathroom is gross (badly ventilated and dirty) and sometime the clothes are not well sorted, like perhaps they have a staff member or two who need policing. (I will say I mostly find the staff to be helpful and fun, even in the cases where language is a barrier.) These items make a five star a four star. read more

The only thing I found Unique about this thrift store was its ability for it to have absolutely nothing that appealed to me. I spent about 1/2 an hour here, walked up and down every aisle and maybe picked up 3 things to look at in more detail. I love thrift stores and can have a wonderful time pouring through the finds there. But for a place this large to have so little to spark my interest was just sad. I will say however if you're a Beanie Baby collector or know one they have oodles of the little squishy friends on racks suspended above a couple of the aisles. Quite frankly, I was SHOCKED by Unique. My mother-in-law calls it her favorite store, and tonight I found out why. When you walk in it seems kind of like a Korean market, with the individual mini-shops lined up. But then you get into the thrift store area and you are greeted by aisles and aisles of STUFF! It's 75% clothes with the rest being a few electronics, many knick-knacks, and even an Xmas section. I went in on my way home to find red heels for a Halloween costume. I walked out with red heels, a bathing suit, and a robe! I will definitely be coming back to Unique when I have more time. This place is divine! read more

The only reason I'm not giving Unique 5 stars is because it's insanely crowded and it can be hard to navigate the aisles. There are so many things to see at this thrift store. The knick knacks are kitschy and cool - and I've found plates and bowls there that were easily worth ten times what they were charging for them, as well as missing pieces of sets. Happy they've switched from staples in the clothes to little plastic tags that can be cut off as well. Pro-tip - wear tight clothes. There are no dressing rooms but it's pretty easy to slip something on over leggings and a tank top. Everyone does it! read more

Apparently they don't check ANYTHING from the time it is donated to the time they put it on the shelf. I have found numerous items, i.e., a board game, that when opened had checkers in it (no, it was not a checker game box). I brought this to their attention and the next time I went there it was right back on the shelf. The worst example was recently they had about a dozen Lego sets behind the counter that I asked them to open. One of them was priced $24.xx and when opened had 4 Lego pieces in it! Unreal! So ANYTHING in a box OPEN it before buying! I HAVE found many nice items there priced very cheaply but it's hit or miss. I love wading through thrift stores, but despite the large selection at Unique, it's not my favorite. The place is enormous--practically a warehouse full of stuff, stuff, and more stuff. Besides the usual clothes and shoes, they have a lot of kitchenwares, curtains, pillows, linens, furniture, toys, and decorations, and plenty more random odds and ends. The first time I came, I was so intimidated that I skipped the clothing section entirely. There was just too much to look through. When I revisited recently, I was really hoping to find a big serving bowl, but after looking up and down two aisles of dishware, I found nothing. There were, however, at least three sets of punch bowls and glasses. I also tackled the clothes and shoes this time. The clothes are organized by garment type, e.g. winter outerwear, skirts, etc. You have to hunt through to find sizes. The prices are all over the place. A silk Ralph Lauren blazer in great condition was $5, but a synthetic, 90s slip dress was $20. I had picked out a couple of basic wool skirts, but found out that there wasn't a dressing room. I didn't really feel like being too acrobatic with the trying on under/over my clothes, so abandoned them. In the future, I'd probably stick with browsing the outerwear and jackets, because I wouldn't want to waste money on something that could be expensive and impossible to try on in store. Most of the shoes weren't anything special. There were some unattractive Manolos for $199, and a pair of beat up Giuseppe Zanottis were $150. Considering they were lumped in with random flip flops and really old Target shoes, I would have thought the shoes would be less. Someone clearly has an eye out for higher end labels and are assigning prices accordingly without taking into account the condition of the actual item. read more

I'm surprised no one has reviewed Unique Thrift Store. It's the *largest* thrift store in Northern Virginia. Yes, it's about the size of a grocery store and almost as organized! I rarely go to thrift stores, but this one really impressed me. Unfortunately, the one time I went I didn't buy much (I was just looking for ties, which they didn't have a nice selection of). I purchased barely used Pictionary game for $1.60 (25% off the sales price - read below). I did find replica designer items (Chanel, et cetera) and lots of furniture near the entrance. Hopefully they will still be there when I return (probably not though). Unique is seriously the king of thrift stores. I suggest a visit from thrift shoppers and non-thrift shoppers alike. The only downfall is that parking and getting out of lot and onto Gallows Road can be a total nightmare! Tip: Go on Mondays to save 25% off everything in the store! read more

Careful purchasing donated books! The woman doing my check out saw that my book was only $3.45 brand new. Still she tried to charge me $2.49, until I brought it to the attention of the manager. The manager insisted that it was $.99, the lowest price available. I'm just saying, don't be afraid to challenge what the cashier says. Having tried to insult my intelligence, she had a good laugh about it, but I don't really care about the $. It's the principle from one who tries to never purposely cheat anyone. I'm a bit scared to come in here, the smell is like a mixture of pee and stinky socks. I'm not a fan of shopping at a thrift store but my grandpa always insists on going. We usually take my baby sister here to see if there's old clothing for babies that we can use on her dolls. And my grandpa likes junk so...that's how I get stuck here with them. This place is huge and full of random things from furniture to houseware. The big thing for me is it's a total mess and stuff everywhere, which is where my mini OCD kicks in. I loved this place when we first started going. Staff now refuses to price items if found unmarked. Trying to sign up for the discount has become the never ending joke. You can sign up on sale days which seem to happen every weekend. They always say come back during the week to sign up...hello I work during the week! Pricing seems to be all over the place and not make sense. I've found items marked higher than the department store clearance tag that was still attached. This place was a huge disappointment, based on the stellar reviews, and a giant WTF in general. I was so excited to come here after reading other Yelp reviews. I rushed over after work and was giddy with anticipation as I walked into the giant warehouse-like building, with weird sketchy vendors lining the entrance way. That giddiness soon abated when I took a quick glance at the first items I encountered - single, threadbare kitchen towels hung on hangers and retailing for $1 each. I moved on and glanced at little plastic baggies of cutlery, since I could always use more forks. They were $3.99 for four or five forks. What?? Are you kidding me? As I ran up and down the aisles of the store I was greeted with more and more ripoffs. $15-$20 for ugly artwork with scratched frames and foggy glass. $20 for (non-designer!) women's blouses. Strange, archaic electronics in the back not even worth being sent out for scrap parts, going for $20. I could be shopping at REAL stores for BRAND NEW merchandise for these prices! TJ Maxx, Home Goods, Wal Mart, Target, Filene's Basement, etc. People rave about how Unique has sales and special VIP discount cards and such, but I feel like these sales and discounts make the merchandise cost what it normally should, when otherwise they are just committing highway robbery on every item that they sell. Perhaps Unique is good for the rare and difficult to find steal, like a cheap wedding dress or something, but I struggle to give it any sort of recommendation for any reason. read more

I don't want to keep this store to my own secret. But what the heck. This store is huge. You might be overwhelmed by the volume. And, you'll notice you need to pay closer attention as both crappies & treasure are next to each other, and there're hits & miss. I have never bought any clothes as they don't have changing room, but I bought quirky kitchen wares & purse. Most of the items are cheap, but some are overpriced so you need to ask yourself how much you're willing to pay. So far my best find is Kate Spade leather purse (almost new). Happy hunting! read more
