The airline I've flown, by far, the most miles on is United. This started well before I moved to Atlanta in 2000. I built up hundreds of thousands of miles with United, mainly from trips to Asia. We all know Delta is the big dog in town. They have more direct flights in to and out of Atlanta than any other airline. So why, after 18+ years, have I stuck with United? The answer is simple: I get more for my miles flying with United than I do with Delta (and there are some other reasons too, outlined later below). Here's a recent example which makes it clear: A round-trip ticket to San Francisco from Atlanta cost only 25,000 miles on United. On Delta, it cost 35,000 miles. As a regular traveler between ATL and SFO, I've noticed that these "fares" have stayed the same for many years. There's an unsurprising kicker though -- Delta offers more non-stop flights than United. Most of United's routes from Atlanta to San Francisco require a stop at one of their hubs in Chicago or Houston. Those stops add, I estimate, about 2-3 hours in total trip time. While United's flights are cheaper in terms of miles, the trips can potentially take longer. I prefer direct flights of course, but I also don't mind connecting in Chicago or Houston and saving 10,000 miles. Just a personal preference. Delta is the airline I've flown second-most. In terms of frequency of flight delays and quality of customer service and the planes/flights themselves, it's been pretty much a wash for me between Delta and United. They're about the same. They've both had their problems (what airline or airport hasn't?) and overall, they've both been fine. However, there are a few other nuances where United wins when it comes to redeeming miles: 1. When it comes to the lowest fares, you can still choose your seats with United when purchasing your ticket. With Delta, you can't - your seats are assigned after check in. 2. You can easily use your United miles to book hotel stays, rental cars, and more without needing to have any sort of status with United. With Delta, booking hotel stays, rental cars, and more requires you to be a Medallion member or a select Delta SkyMiles credit card member. With United, you don't have to deal with Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs), Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs), or any of that other confusing stuff. United is straightforward. They make redeeming miles simpler and easier, and simply offer you more rewards for less miles. 3. United's credit cards are through Visa. Delta's credit cards are through American Express. United's Visa credit cards are accepted at more businesses and have lower annual fees with comparable benefits compared to Delta's Amex cards. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, you can find United in the North Terminal. Ticketing and check-in kiosks are located near door N6. I've usually flown into and out of Concourse T, Gates T14 and T15, for my west coast trips. This review wasn't intended to disparage Delta. I like Delta. It's more to explain why flying with United has its benefits. And in a city ruled by Delta, United is doing more than a decent job. read more

I don't really give two star reviews. If I've truly had a poor experience with a business it's usually bad enough that I will put them down for one star. But I'd say in this case the two star rating is on point. It's not an absolutely terrible experience to fly with United compared to other airlines but it's far from awesome. For example, I get on planes knowing full well to expect a lower quality of food than a good restaurant might provide, but I've generally been disappointed with the food even by industry standards. Case in point: My tea was not hot or even really warm on my short flight to Chicago. The time before that, when I was headed from Atlanta to California, the breakfast choices were the type of food: pancakes and eggs that need to be fresh. The entrees were noticeably stale! The other piece that's annoying is that they offer in-flight entertainment from your mobile device, but my experience has been that the signal was barely strong enough to stream music, not strong enough to even initiate the movies or tv shows offered. So basically, you'll just be sitting there for the duration of your flight. I really want to give United a three star review but they just don't make it to average in my opinion. Yes I'll probably fly with them at some point again but I definitely won't go out of my way to choose them, because in my opinion, basically all they do is get ya there haha read more

The. Worst. Airline. They send me an email as I arrived at the airport sharing that my flight had been cancelled. I went to the customer service desk at the airport and had my full trip cancelled as there was no alternative for my weekend trip (don't worry, not the bad part). After taking a $100 Uber home, missing my original trip, and rebooking for another weekend at a higher price, I found out that the flight was not canceled after all. Rather than making this error on their part right in my initial outreach to customer service (literally even an apology for misinforming me), I had to reach out four different times to customer service (including once when I was transferred to a closed department) to receive any kind of credit. Please spend the extra $50 to fly another airline, this is never worth it. read more

Absolutely the worst airlines out there!! I purchased an economy seat.....when I checked in at the kiosks there was an agent there who offered to help, then she charged me for a small carry on $35. Had she not been there I could have gone about my business checked and carried my small bag on without anyone knowing....that being said if you fly any economy seat on United you are not allowed a carry on. Stay far away from this airline! NEVER again!!! read more

I was going thru pre- check at terminal 1 united airlines- Chicago O'hare I saw the precheck line and I followed the directions, one of the ticket/ desk services employee- [older woman, black, short (pixie cut) hair] she yelled at me for passing through, she told me I was supposed to close the rope behind me. I mentioned to her that I was trying my best and I had been struggling with reattaching the rope to it's proper set up. She told me "You need to learn than" I ignored her rude comment. I am not sure if it's her job or not- BUT her rude interaction and her rude comments were unnessary. This needs to be taken up with management. read more

Checked in at the United Airlines ticket counter at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. I had already checked into my flight using the United app on my iPhone, but I needed to drop off my bag. There was no one in front of me in the Premier line, used the kiosk to enter my information and the United agent immediately checked my ID, tagged my bag, and I was done! At the Gate Area (Gate T14), we walked up just as boarding was starting. Was in Group 1, boarding was as orderly as it could be, considering many travelers are inconsiderate and clueless. Horrible experience. Where do I begin. There are several places where I had an unsavory experience flying United. First, the website lists inaccurate covid reqs for a trip to Guam. The site says no neg test or vaccine required for US citizens which is false. Also, a call rep gave incorrect guidance. Next, I had to pay for my bag on my Hawaiian air connection. This should have been included in my United flight purchase or I should have been notified of potential additional fees. Also, I purchased a seat but my seat purchase was not honored. I tried to upgrade my seat at the gate but was told it was a full flight (which it wasn't) and the seat map showed that, also I could see empty seats on the plane. Additionally, I couldn't add a credit card to purchase snacks because the system had glitches. Lastly, the airline did not provide a hotel for my 10hr layover in Oahu. I haven't flown on a plane in a very long while. I've grown accustomed to driving across the country. Everything is constantly changing, especially technology. I flew from Atlanta, Georgia to San Francisco, California. Flight 790 on July 10, 2024. In the past when I've flown the temperature in the cabin has always been freezing cold. Well, it was hot with a chance of more heat today. I don't know what's happenings to the air inside and up in the sky but it was so hot on that plane, my shirt was soaking wet. Some of the staff were okay. The Asian flight attendant behaved like a racist. She didn't tend to us at all. She sent other staffers our way. She needs to find another form of employment. I don't know her name but it's so not hard to find out the manifest of workers. We didn't expect any politeness from her. Everyone else greeted "US" and attended to us with a smile. I was so dehydrated when I arrived. I needed water. Miss Griffin saw to it that I did not pass out and cared enough to bring me 2 cups of water one with ice immediately. After which I fell off to sleep. The flight was smooth. We sat on the left side behind the wing. They served a meal but we slept through it. I'd been up an entire 25 hours at that point. UA sent a lil survey to my phone. Unfortunately, by the time I was rested enough to respond, they'd closed the survey. People are traveling give them time to rest before bombarding them with a survey. read more

I flew on United Airlines for a flight from Atlanta to Bozeman, MT and back. My experience was more good than bad, but the worst part of it was a big deal to me as a first time United passenger. Originally, I was supposed to catch a flight from Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport on the afternoon of Saturday, 12/15/2018 to Denver, where I would then catch a connecting flight to Bozeman. Then on Friday, 12/21/2018, I was scheduled to catch an afternoon flight from Bozeman to Denver and from there catch a flight back to Atlanta. I paid for my ticket months ahead of time on 07/13/2018. The total cost for my round trip ticket was $690.20. Out of the major airlines that fly to Bozeman, United was cheaper than Delta and similar to American Airlines in price. The day before my flight, I tried to do my online check-in and was unable to. No worries: I'd just wait until the morning of my flight to do it. On the morning of my flight, I tried again several times and was still unable to check-in. Now I was worried. I thought about just waiting until I arrive at the airport to check-in there but instead called their 800 number. It was a good thing I did because I found out my flight to Bozeman had been canceled. That was odd because the weather in Atlanta wasn't bad at all. They didn't give me a reason why it was canceled other than to say, "Those things happen sometimes." They also said I should've received a text message advising me of the cancellation, but I didn't get one. The next available flight was for Sunday, 12/16/2018 at 6 am, this time flying to Chicago's O'Hare Airport instead of Denver, where I'd then catch the connecting flight to Bozeman. Everything about my return flight back to Atlanta stayed the same as previously scheduled. I took the 6 am flight but having to call and rearrange hotel reservations was an inconvenience. It's a good thing the hotel in Montana was understanding. It's also a good thing I didn't go to the airport on Saturday afternoon only to find out I couldn't leave until the next scheduled flight on Sunday. I brought two pieces of luggage with me. My first bag flew for $25 and the second cost $35. And of course, when it was time for me to fly back home I had to pay those charges again. Also, make sure your luggage weight isn't over 50 pounds per suitcase or there will be additional charges. The flight itself was much better than I expected. The seats were comfortable and I've never had so much leg room on a plane before. The connecting flight from Chicago to Bozeman was a smaller plane though that had less leg room. But overall, I have no real complaints about the flights and the customer service on them. I left Atlanta at 6 am (eastern standard time) and touched down in Bozeman around 12:40 pm (mountain standard time). The layovers going both to and from my destination were short too. I would've rated United higher had it not been for the canceled flight and the way it was handled. Yes, I would fly with them in the future depending on where I'm going and the other airline options available. read more

With the recent United and Continental merger, most of United Airlines has started to fail, miserably. Their declining customer service, their long wait holds on the phone (even for Elites), their mediocre food for purchase options, and their rude customer service agents at their main hubs (namely SFO & EWR). Alas, when I was rerouted to Atlanta due to an unfortunate late flight coming in (and therefore missing my connecting flight), I had the pleasure of laying over in Atlanta. Many of the angry customers on my SFO-EWR flight were rerouted, upset, tired, and hungry, and were offered meal vouchers in EWR. Since United had rebooked my friend and I on a flight to ATL that would leave soon after we landed in EWR, we were not offered any sort of "we're sorry" tokens of goodwill. So when my friend and I got off the plane in Atlanta, I spoke with the gate agent there who was super helpful and sweet. I asked her if we could be offered meal vouchers due to the delay and rerouting, and she obliged and offered my friend and I meal vouchers--two of them per person -- for lunch and dinner. She even offered suggestions on where to eat too. She was a really sweet lady, and this is the customer service that I miss from the old, pre-merger United. While my overall United flight experience that night/day was ruined from the delays in SFO, this gate agent definitely made my travel experience a little bit better. One of the best airlines the seats was comfortable and spacious overall it was a very good experience for us.

Flying First Class really helps with the whole experience. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport is a bit daunting for a small town girl. The United Staff here were helpful and very professional. We have learned how to use the Kiosks for checking in and since we were "Premier" customers, we were able to walk right over to the counter so the baggage check was quick and easy. The agent told us to go to the smaller security area as that would take us directly to our terminal. The lines were really long, but they were worse in the other security area. We were PreChecked for TSA so security was relatively painless - except they were short staffed and did not have someone to man the large scaring machine - I set off the other scanner with my metal hips. The waiting areas were OK. The seats were hard plastic so were not terribly comfortable, but there were plenty of electrical outlets to keep our electronics charged. The T concourse looks a bit old and is smaller than the other ones, but it was relatively clean and the gates were well marked. I like United and the perks are worth the extra price. read more

We arrived in the T gates and walked over to baggage carousel 1 north terminal. After arriving and spending 5 minutes searching for a monitor to confirm this waa the right carousel, we were told #1 was broke, it would arrive on 3. Stood another 15 minutes at #3 and everyone shared a flustered look. #3 moved for several minutes but nothing came out. A few minutes later, #4 starts moving and other passengers noticed their bags were there. read more

United at Atlanta needs some help. While they do have a Club, it's in the D concourse and that's where the "old" Continental flights go to Houston and Newark. In the T concourse, there is no United Club and these flights go to the old "United" hubs in Chicago and Washington Dulles. It's been how long since these two airlines merged, and they still operate separately? Last Friday, my Washington flight went off without a hitch but I watched the airline cancel two of three afternoon flights to Chicago. There were some really unhappy people who were left behind because the one remaining flight couldn't accommodate all of the stand by passengers. And because it was weather related (even though it was nice in Atlanta), they wouldn't endorse people over to American or another carrier to get them to Chicago. Very unhappy people. The gates in T are crowded and there are very few power outlets available. While this is less a "United Airlines" problem and more a "Alanta airport" problem, it still needs to be corrected. read more

Not only did my bags get lost on my connecting flight but my bags were also handled extremely carelessly. I'll never fly with united again. The plain did not have any food or beverage available, baggage claim relocated several times because of a failing ramp and my expensive suitcases were damaged. I am very disappointed and will not use this airline again! I called into customer care this past Sunday morning because I hadn't received specific seating information for my family's upcoming trip. I was transferred to hotels.com because I hadn't secured a hotel room yet. Once on the line, I spoke with a representative named Elms. This representative LIED to me about the charges and about the room I booked!!! Firstly, he told me the rate was $120 each night but when I questioned the grand total, he said it was luxury taxes and fees. I wasn't given an itinerary yet, so I didn't know he lied about the nightly rate! The rates fluctuated and he NEVER made me aware. Secondly, he told me I was booking a suite with a separate sitting area. However, when I called the hotel (today) I learned this too was a lie! I am NEVER USING United ever again because they deal with crooked companies that swindle unaware consumers! I'm so disgusted and disappointed that this has totally damped my excitement!!! read more

***Arriving at Atlanta on United Airlines was not good--the gate I arrived at was a long walk (or long in-airport train ride) to get to ground transportation/baggage claim; departing Atlanta was easier; United gates are right next to the North terminal security checkpoint; several other airlines are in concourses that are much farther away from the security check; boarding was quick and efficient and we left early and arrived at our destination early as well*** I am not sure what the parking situation is at Atlanta's airport, but I imagine parking here is expensive like other airports. read more

After 10 minutes of inane back and forth (which included me showing my email from United indicating the purchase) I was let in...as if it were a favor. Inside, 2 of the 3 beer taps were kicked. Very limited selection of snacks (wasn't expecting much). As a former Global Services member my bar was low. I can definitively say United dramatically underperformed this bar. Hey....it's an airline. I am a 1 million mile / Gold member for United. I used to fly them a ton both domestic and international. I now fly another carrier most of the time, but still fly United about 20% of the time. What I notice about United is they charge you 11 bucks for internet and 8 bucks for TV on board, but with the other team, it's free. The price of the air fare is about the same. The only extra I get on United is 3 inches of leg room in economy and the chance to win the lottery (odds are about the same) and sit where they treat their customers better. I will still fly them international, but for my domestic dollar, their product is no better than the other carriers. Just trying to rack up points once I hit my goal on the other guys. read more

My four flights on this date were not the worst ever. I did pay a few hundred extra to get into economy plus. The drink cups were the smallest possible size. Why even bother serving drinks? Two swallows are all that you get. 1000.00 in air fare and they give you one ounce of Coke per flight. These must be sad days for airlines. I am glad I fly Delta. Traveling on another airline makes me see that Delta really is a better airline. read more

How do I begin ? Flight delayed one hour then told that it was cancelled without notice . No help was offered to rebook flights. Passengers were left to figure it out and fend for themselves . No apologies given. 50% of flights that I have flown though united have either been cancelled or delayed without apologies or offers to rebook . I would spend the extra money and fly with delta . The worst airline ever! I thought spirit airlines was bad, this one takes the cake. I had to check in a bag that I travel with as a carry-on all the time. It was either that or pay $30 plus an additional $25 fee for checking at the gate if the gate crew deemed it to large to take on. I guess I had no choice in the matter, so I checked my bag in at ticketing. I had reservations on doing so because it was a nice bag and carried some important items. Long story short, I retrieved my bag after the flight, went home to unpack, only to find that my $500 Alexander McQueen sneakers, $60 vans sneakers, and $170 AirPods had been stolen from me. The thief had the nerve to take my Alexander McQueen sneakers out of its dust bag and leave the bag behind. I'm in the claim process to try to get my items back or the value of those items, but I urge you to think twice before flying United Airlines. read more
