I had similarly terrible experiences on United Airlines on two occasions. Both were booked online through United and both were to be operated by Air Canada. I have been a very loyal United Customer since they purchased Continental AL many years ago. Approximately 20 hours before my round trip flight was to leave from Cleveland to Toronto, the flight was cancelled. Then about an hour later I received a new flight leaving from Chicago, with no flight to Chicago from Cleveland. Since it is closer to drive to Toronto than Chicago, I cancelled and then United refused to give me a refund, just a credit. On another flight, my wife and i left from Cleveland to Rome for a cruise. Again, booked through United operated by Air Canada. Two daye before that flight we received an email from United telling us to get ready for our flight to Columbus. I was on the phone from the cruise ship for over two hours with United trying to convince United that i booked my return to Cleveland, not Columbus. Even while i was holding a copy of my confirmation to Cleveland in my hand they insisted that I booked to Columbus. Finally after much arguing they changed my flight to go back to Cleveland, my origination point. And now, that i wish to never fly United again, i have an almost $600 credit from my first flight i have to use by the first of next year. read more

BEWARE OF UNITED AIRLINES, AND AIR CANADA On July 15, I hired Kathy Gill, Busy Time Travel, Avoya Network to become my agent regarding an upcoming trip to Churchill Manitoba. She arranged flights with United Airlines and Air Canada for November 1, 2022. Twice my flight were cancelled. Neither time my flight was rescheduled, nor did the airlines notify me. On October 11, I called Air Canada to ask which gate I should arrive at. They told me that my flight had been cancelled on Sept. 12. Had I not contacted Air Canada about departure information, I would not have known. I spent hours with both airlines in the next two days. I was charged another $163 from Air Canada. I had to purchase new flights to Winnipeg. United told me I was due a refund of $26, and refused to give it to me. I informed both United and Air Canada that only I be allowed to make any further changes. They both agreed that only I would be able to make any changes. On October 31, Gill emailed me. She stated my entire, original $805 United/Air Canada charge was disputed by me. It was not. Once again, I had to call the airlines to confirm that her allegations were incorrect. Once again, much more wasted time and stress. Again, on October 31, less than 13 hours before my departure, Gill cancelled my flights with United and Air Canada. The airlines never informed me. They allowed Gill to cancel the flights that I made on October 11, despite their assurances that Gill would noy be allowed to intervene. I spent hours again on the telephone hours before departure hoping that I would be allowed to depart. This new flight resulted in a three hour earlier departure, with an extra stop in Chicago. On November 1, I had to spend more of my vacation time trying to arrange another flight home. On October 12, I sent a letter to the Scott Kirby, the CEO of United. A copy is enclosed. I also emailed a letter to Michael Rousseau, the CEO of Air Canada. Of course, neither responded. These airlines have caused me many, many hours of work, stress and extra expenses. This has been a pitiful experience for me. They have nearly sabotaged my entire $8000 trip to Churchill, Manitoba. I believe that I am eligible for compensation and refunds. This email had a "do not respond" indicator. So, once again I called United. I was told someone would call me after 2 pm on October 18. Did I receive a call-course not. Instead, I get another complaint #16618958500017. This complaint appears to be just another waste of my time. I have since learned that you did not have any of my personal contact information. How can you make a reservation for a traveler without having any information, so they can be notified directly? How can you and/or Air Canada cancel a flight, and not provide a refund? How can you overcharge someone to make a new flight? I really resent the way I have been treated, and I hope that you will take measures to see others are not dealt with in such a manner. What can I add to others' troubles with this airline? The last flight I took, they kept us on the tarmac for over two hours before departure due to weather... the children and parents on the flight were going absolutely bonkers - there was almost a mutiny. Separately, it took them over a year to refund me for a ticket I purchased but could not use due to a medical emergency. Their outsourced support in the Philippines is difficult to use for all but the most basic requests. Plenty of people in Chicago needing jobs, Mr. Kirby. read more

I pay three to four times the amount for coach to fly first class. Main reason? I want to skip dinner when I fly home at night in this case From Vega$ at 4 PM to ORD. What a shock seeing what they served first class: a see through baggie containing one small bottle of water, a wet nap, a tiny bag of stale pretzels and that same damn caramel wafer. Back pre-COVID they used to give first class a needed drin when we were seated. No longer. Od course, like so many lightweight companies these days, they'll trot out the ol' familiar Covid Excuse. While there was no threat of "re-accommodation", you could tell that United PR fiasco was keeping employees on their toes. Meaning, flight attendants, CS reps, etc, were extra nice. Now remember, "extra nice" in the domestic flight business, pretty much means you are guaranteed humane treatment in any other business, but I digress. On my flight to PV, most of the seats in their "premium" economy section were empty. Now, pre "re-accommodation" United would have left those seats empty (with a smile) but this is the new and improved United so a few of us that asked, were allowed a free upgrade from cattle economy to "premium" economy. As a loyal customer and card holder of United, I can finally say that I have had enough. I have had way too many less than pleasing run ins with United within the past month alone and I am to the point where I am just done with the airline altogether. 1. No sense in enrolling in the credit card program. It is a scam and those Miles don't go towards your flight miles -- meaning you don't qualify for any of the perks based off of the reward miles 2. They cancelled the return trip of my flight without contacting me because I did not show up for my outbound flight. I had no idea I was responsible for answering to an airline about a ticket that I PAID FOR. It's none of their business how I got to my destination and most importantly, it isn't ethical at all to cancel someone's paid flight without 1., notifying them at all, 2. When it was ALREADY PAID FOR. No they didn't refund my tickets or offer me a credit. The only option was to pay for a new ticket or the change fee which was worth more than the ticket itself. 3. I ended up really sick (fever, cough, chills) and called to move my flight so that I could give my self a chance to feel better. Also, j figured they would have the best interest in their other customers in mind, wouldn't want a potentially contagious passenger on their flight right? Nope. Made it difficult as ever to change the flight. Again, $200 change fee and the difference in the flight cost. I have several other examples of how and why I am so disappointed with the airline but I will stop here. I figured they would treat their loyal customers with more loyalty but day after day I realize that is not the case. I have officially committed to parting ways with this airline. It truly is sad the destructive path they have chosen to partake in. If you want quality and customer service--- this is not the airline for you. You are better off flying spirit or frontier! United: Putting Profits before People since 1926. When other airlines are putting up extra precautions to address coronavirus, United is still treating passengers like cattle for slaughter with fully booked flights and no distancing. On a recent flight between Denver and Austin, they weren't even enforcing mask policies. So uncomfortable. Also note that their bottom tier Basic Economy doesn't permit carry ins - not even the option to pay more for it. They do offer checked luggage for extra charge, but that's super inconvenient for business travelers like myself. Anyway, I've been a regular SW user for years. I make a point of it not to fly United. I've had much better luck with other airlines. As with any airline, I've given them a fair shot on multiple occasions but there have been more misses than hits for them in my experience--especially in the ways of major flight delays due to planes not functioning properly. read more

I boarded an united airlines jet bound for Chicago O'Hare Flight was delayed because the pilot on board refused to fly because he did not train on this piece of equipment. The gate agent then stated the the other pilot that was scheduled to fly could not be located and may be lost. Finally boarded the plane. Our family bought airline tickets through United to fly across the country. The airline notified us less than 12 hours before our flight that it was canceled. They put us on a flight 36 hours later; putting us on a red eye with a child. They offered no explanation and no discount. On our return flight they changed our seats. We had originally paid extra so that we could choose seats together. They moved us 11 rows apart. No offer for an explanation or a discount. Do yourself a favor and NEVER fly on United Airlines again. I will use Delta from now on. United Airlines is the most inept and unprofessional company that I have ever used for a flight. read more

I'm joining a few friends on an international trip in a few months. My friend sent me a link to the United flight for our trip (which was a fabulous deal!), when I went through all of the steps to book it, the payment would not process. After trying twice, I decided to call United and see what was going on. The representative shared that one of the connecting flights returning to the States was operated by another airline and that the deal I saw was no longer being offered. After holding for a few minutes, she informed me that the new cost was $400 more than I anticipated. OUCH. I asked her if she could look and see what other options were available. After holding a second time, she told me she could get me on a different returning route that was $50 less than the original flight price I saw. Yes, please! She went through the process of booking my flight for me, and waived the $25 phone booking fee (keep in mind - we were on the phone for an hour!). After my payment was processed, I received a confirmation email with my itinerary. What was about to be a sour experience, turned sweet very quickly thanks to the lovely gal on the other end of the phone who was both extremely patient and willing to sincerely help me out by exploring every option available. read more

No complaints from me during my flight, but prior to my flight I did notice that the attendant set a few of our flights back, because there were issues at LAX. He may have done it in case of any problems that may occur later, and he may have done it to help someone else out. Part of me is fine with that, because I have no major plans once I get to my destination, but what if I did have plans? Sounds like a slight way to screw someone, if it were to help someone else out. I'm just happy that I will still arrive the same day, and do not have to pay any extra fees. That right there wouldn't be cool. With all of the headlines that United Airlines is making right now, it is good to not have any pressures of being somewhere by a certain time. As long as I don't have to pay any extra fees for anything I'm ok with a delayed flight. I prefer to fly United over other airlines, and for the past two years I have flown from Phoenix back home to Upstate NY (doing lay overs in Chicago most of the time). I have to say that my experiences have been A-OK aka "average". It is awesome that they have their own terminal at O'Hare, because it makes travel fairly simple...and you know you will find your gate eventually although this is a huuuuuge terminal. The check in process was smooth sailing (they also have separate check-in areas if you are flying premier or standard), similarly, if you are flying premier there is a separate area you go through to get pre-screened searched prior to boarding/entering the airline terminals, then finally before boarding the plane at your Gate their are roped off sections for boarding, depending on where your seat assignment is. Flight attendants on the plane were quite friendly and attentive, especially when flying premier. No complaints from me during my flight, the flight attendants came by routinely to ask if I need any additional refreshments... I LOVE the fact that United offers in flight meals, plus offers still offers first class/business class/economy plus etc. The only thing that I was not a huge fan of was that they no longer have any video monitors nor any audio/music offered old school style. It appears everything entertainment-wise on United flights has been moved soley onto their APP... which you have to download onto your cell phone or ipad/etc. This was a bummer, since I was not expecting to have to do this... and I don't really want to waste my own battery usage on watching movies/listening to music on my own devices. Overall, it was a good/average experience, and I have no major complaints. I have never had any issue flying United and I will continue to be a United consumer. read more

Do not fly with United Airlines!!! I flew from Chicago O'Hare to San Francisco International Airport on July 4th. Upon my arrival in San Francisco, I had no luggage!! They tell me my luggage was scanned upon arrival to the airport but my luggage never reached my hands. I filed a claim immediately. I called the airlines everyday to track my luggage. The airlines says "we're looking for your luggage". "I'm sorry this happened ". I want my luggage!!! I went to the San Francisco airport to physically look for my luggage and it wasn't there. The airlines told me the same thing over and over again, "well your luggage was scanned into the airport, I'm sorry this happened ". They told me to fill out a police airport. I filled out a police report and flew home to Chicago without my luggage. I'm so angry now! I call the San Francisco police department for updates snd I basically get the runaround, check back in a few weeks it'll take a while. I want my luggage that's all. I want to know if my luggage was stolen. I will never fly with United Airlines ever again! My vacation was absolutely ruined, I had to borrow clothes from my friend in which I will always be grateful to her for her hospitality and patience. read more

Last September (2021) I booked 2 first-class tickets from DC to San Francisco. I have back pain, which is one of the reasons I wanted the first-class seats. When we got to the airport, we were bumped to economy class despite our objections. We were promised a refund of the difference in price between the first-class and economy seats. After much hassle, I got them to give me a refund. However, they only gave me $299/seat, when I had paid $977/seat! Economy class seats do not cost $678! So, I feel like they cheated me. I probably wouldn't have much of a problem with United airlines if they'd let basic economy check-in online or through the app. Checking in at the kiosk or seeing an agent is time consuming. That's my only real gripe with them. The flights are fine, overall. I've left on time coming and going, and they kept me updated surrounding my flights. Going to Las Vegas from O'hare was fine, didn't ask about a carry-on/ luggage. However, leaving Vegas, an attendant checked for a carry-on even though, I checked in using the kiosk. She okayed my personal item. I'd fly with them if the price is right, have no checked bags, and if it's not a long flight. read more

United Airlines is the worst airline I've had interactions with. Our flight was cancelled coming from Jamaica, once we boarded the plane due to mechanical issues. The ticket agents didn't reschedule our flight. We had to go on the app and reschedule our flight for the next day. The original flight was non-stop. United didn't bother to bring an additional plane or reschedule us for a nonstop flight. The rescheduled flight that was available via the app was 9 hours long, with a 3-hour layover in New York. The route took us from Jamaica to New York to Houston. The nonstop flight was a total of 3 hours. Then the rescheduled flight was delayed and caused us to miss the connection in New York. The ticket agent instructed us to scan a QR code and reschedule the flight. He then walked off. There were numerous patrons on the rescheduled flight. United refuses to issue a refund. They stated the ticket was used. I am a disabled veteran and have medical issues and the flight exacerbated my medical issues. We were originally scheduled to return home on Tuesday. It was after midnight on Thursday when we returned home. This caused me to miss my injections. Some individuals were stuck in Jamaica for 2-3 days, due to there was no flight available. read more

Wanted to give a shot out to the amazing lead and staff who loaded the baggage on flight ua622 today, 11/29/19 gate b12 at 2pm. We're watched them load and have never seen them NOT throw the bags on to the conveyer. These 3 guys gently picked up and gently placed the bags on the belts. Oh. Em. Gee. I will NEVER fly United again. As I wrote a couple days ago, they left us sitting on the tarmac for almost an hour when we flew into Chicago, festering in their worn-down, old plane sprinkled with wobbly armrests, ripped seat covers, and peeling lettering. As I discovered on the way home, that was nothin'. After boarding our flight back to BWI at O'Hare, we sat waiting to take off... and sat... and sat... until about 15 minutes after our departure time (9:50pm) and well after we'd boarded, someone came on over the intercom. He had a heavy accent, but once he finally got to the point, we managed to catch the words "don't have a pilot." Don't have pilot?!? Seriously?!? You just realized this??? How do you board an entire plane without realizing you have no one in the cockpit?? Fantastic. Never felt safer. No worries though, he's just a hop, skip and a jump away... in San Francisco. All this meant that our departure time went from 9:50pm to 12:30am. They had us unload all our stuff from the overheads and go back out to the gate area, where most people laid down to try to sleep on the chairs and floor. Because now, instead of landing at the somewhat reasonable time of midnight, we would now be landing at almost 4am. Big thanks, by the way, for waiting to kick us off the plane AFTER 10pm, when all the restaurants and stores close. My husband had to go straight to work from the airport after landing. Lucky he had his toothbrush and some clean clothes with him. I'm amazed he didn't fall asleep at the wheel on the way home tonight. Meanwhile, what did United do for our troubles? Zip. Zero. Zilch. We didn't even get an apology until we re-boarded the plane, now with a pilot (yaaaaay, good job.), after midnight. Again, I have to ask, wtf, United. W. T. F. P.S. - Just realized, this gem of an airline is also the one who, a couple weeks ago, kicked a veteran's service dog (two different employees) and asked the veteran (who has traumatic brain injury and PTSD) if he was retarded. This after his flight, and subsequent rescheduled flights, got canceled three days in a row. If that doesn't call for Yelp to allow for 0 stars, I don't know what does. read more

I recently took United to Cancun from Chicago. I remember always thinking United was the way to fly. It used to mean luxury and comfort but now...it seems like it's turned into a budget airline just for people to get from point A to point B. This was the first flight in years I'd been on that the TV options sucked. I use the word options looselly since there really were no options. It wasn't until 30 minutes into the flight that their set TV programs started playing. It was horrible! This TV show called Mulaney which is some bad version of Seinfeld though I did chuckle one time. What's worse is 2 episodes of this show played....then it went on a loop and the same 2 epsiodes played again! What in the heck!? I'm a horrible flyer and love watching movies & shows to get my mind off the flight. This made me flight pretty miserable. The only way you could watch anything else was if you paid $8 for Direct TV service which streamed the news & other channels...plus channels that played movies like Tammy & Guardians Against the Galaxy. But even with that, the movies played at set times so if you missed the beginning or it started a little later, you might miss some of it. Lame-o when you're paying for the service. No peanuts or pretzels - is that no longer a thing on flights? We did have drink service twice though. I bought a Budweiser for $7. Accidently threw my credit card when I was buying it because I'm super clumsy (CCs only, no cash for purchases) but a couple of gents next to me got on the ground to help me find it. I also had a few guys offer to help with my luggage. Chivalry ain't dead, ladies. Though I'm disappointed with this domestic United flight, I've been happy with their international flights in the past. And I must say the flight attendants were lovely on my flight. read more

Not being from these fair American shores, I hadn't been aware of the merger of United and Continental. So, I was a bit surprised to see my United flight decorated with the word 'United' but with Continental's logo on its tail. I took 7 flights in 2 and half weeks on my recent trip to the USA and judging from some of the reviews I've read from fellow Yelpers, it might seem like a minor miracle that both my luggage and I weren't delayed at all and we arrived at our destinations together as planned. It was my first time on United and the check in staff were pleasant though the security line was long at O'Hare. In common with most American airlines, it cost $25 to check in luggage. The plane departed on time. I appreciated the on board entertainment but I actually slept on most of my journey due to an early start. I was disposed to give United 4 stars for 2 reasons. The first was for my recent flight when I had a unique experience - I checked in 3 hours before my flight and when I got to Seattle, I discovered that my bag had beaten me to Seattle - they had sent it on an earlier flight! The second is slightly historical. Any airline that chooses to name one of its subsidiaries Ted is cool. Of course, Teddy got lots of pictures! United got me and my suitcase from Chicago to Seattle with no drama. Worth 4 stars read more

Dude... so bad that they don't even have a phone number. You have to write in via e-mail or snail mail for them to hear from you because there are so many complaints. United lost our flight reservations, never issued us tickets, charged us twice for round trip European tickets PLUS a $50 fee to reissue their mistake, lost our special dietary requirements so there was no food for me on either 8 hour flight, and mishandled a crazy person on our flight. All this and I can't speak to an actual person. I can't wait to send my novel of a letter to United. read more

Here is the thing about United Airlines: all of the employees work like their boss isn't around. To continue with this illustration, they are like teenagers at an ice cream shop working their first job that KNOW their boss isn't going to come back for a few hours, but instead of giving free ice cream out to their friends and jamming to some tunes on the radio (this illustration has to come to a stop soon) they are just awful. Many employees just say what they want to say instead of what would be appropriate. For example: "Sir, you don't know where you are going. You figure that out and I will try to help you later." vs. "Sir, let me help you." I have seen it over and over again. I had several work flights with United and I experienced blatant age-discrimination, general rudeness, under performance, laziness, inability to problem solve and lack of attention to detail. There seem to be improvements to the planes, but none to their boarding process or customer service. I will never, ever, ever recommend United to anyone. read more

***I have experienced some long delays at O'Hare (to be expected given Chicago's weather and the many United flights coming and going); I experienced no delays on my last two trips though and the United Airlines terminal at O'Hare features several notable eateries and gift shops including Tortas Frontera (from Rick Bayless), Vosges Haut chocolates and Garrett popcorn; the one thing to keep in mind at this terminal if you are connecting--it can be a very long walk to get from one gate to another*** I am not sure what the parking situation is at O'Hare, but I imagine their parking is expensive like other airports. read more

Since 1996, I've pretty much been an Alaska Airlines gal, but this past winter vacation, I took a multi-city trip. This necessitated the use of both Orbitz and multiple carriers for the cheapest fare I could get. First, my United flight was scheduled to leave at 6:42p, and it was delayed until 7:30. (With this one, I'm just looking for things to complain about...I actually appreciated the extra hour I got to spend with the 1HMF). Then when we were already seated on the plane, it took *forever* to move from the gate. During that entire time, the very tired and cranky baby next to me was wailing his poor lungs out. (To his parents - you guys are real troopers.) It was hot in there too, which only contributed to his awful state of utter unhappiness. **and this is where the extra star comes in - the flight attendant offered to bring them anything they needed, and helped make light of the situation...I'm sure this family appreciated it. and while I'm at it with the accolades, the free entertainment was pretty good too (although where entertainment is concerned, JetBlue is where it's at).** THEN, when we finally arrived in SFO, we all make our way over to Baggage Carousel 3, where our flight has been posted. Then the flight comes back on the board, so we wait a little more, thoroughly confused. After what seems like an eternity (and after my ride has circled the airport an untold number of times), the loudspeaker comes on: "To all the passengers on United flight #### waiting for their bags, it will be a few more minutes because the baggage people are unable to open the aircraft door to get to your bags. Sorry for the inconvenience." United, I appreciate the fact that you keep my bag so secure - there are many valuable things the TSA people had to look at and go through. My wife's flight was canceled four minutes before boarding on May 31 for mechanical reasons. Today her flight was delayed because of weather which I understand but now they were told that there could be mechanical problems on the this flight and it would be canceled. Also, I'm a little concerned about United Airlines and mechanical problems. I can't believe what's happened to her on a trip that she's been planning for a year. Thank you United for, not changing my expectations of your service. Years ago I stopped using United Airlines for business purposes, because every flight I was on was always late delayed mechanical problems. My flight was on time - both times. I was super pissed that they charged me a bag fee, when they shouldn't because I have the United credit card, but since "I didn't make the reservations on my card," I had to pay the fee. Apparently that's a new policy... They made up for it having a baller ass plane: the 787 Dreamliner ...you know the new model with special LED mood lighting, a better oxygen system, FREE movies, FREE pillows and blankets - what what? read more

Thank you United Airlines for singlehandedly earning me the Maverick badge on the Yelp mobile application. For those of you that don't know what that is, this badge is for people who check into places despite their low reviews or negative ratings. Due to my routine yelp check-in at the airline at my departure and cities in addition to the standard bag drop and baggage claim, tadaa I've earned this badge. When Continental first announced plans to merge with United, I wasn't happy because I had felt that Continental was vastly superior to United with its amenities and services. However, I did not notice anything change before the airlines officially merged. However, the week of the merger it was almost like the culture changed completely overnight with service from the same employees. I chalked the experience up to the corporate excuse of "well it's spring break" even though no other airlines reported such difficulties. Several roundtrips after merger that include multiple mechanical delays and inexplicable waits on the tarmac that could have been avoided by better planning, I am sad to say that the service has permanently regressed since then. What I find amazing is that Chicago hub flyers are claiming that United's service has also regressed since the merger. So much for the notion that mergers bring about synergy. This review is about half and half for United Airlines and Chicago O'Hare Airport. For, in a lot of ways, they are one and the same. Their twisted personalities have melded into a single composite of nastiness and displeasure. Although I've switched to Delta for most travel (much better), I found myself in a bind coming back from Calgary tonight and had to take a United flight through O'Hare. The flight was originally supposed to depart for Indy at 9:40PM but it has now been pushed back twice to 10:50 PM. I have serious doubts that I will make it at all. My only solace is that I have time to write this review. I have no idea if this delay is a United thing or an O'Hare thing and I frankly don't care. As I was buying a bottle of water and trying to decide which I hated more - the airport (no electrical outlets, too little seating, over crowded, smelly everything and crappy concessions), or the airlines (read previous reviews), it struck me that I hate them exactly equal - like two sides of the same coin. As this realization was taking form, it was inexorably etched in my brain by the karmic request of the clerk behind the counter: "That's $2.85 for the water." read more

In the summer of 2018 I reserved a flight from Chicago, il to Aruba. The wait was always long at United Airlines check in and after a long wait my family and I got to the front desk. My family and I had only carry ons but the ticket agent lady insisted we check in our luggage because it was policy. I told her that we only have carry ons. After arguing with her she told me "you are not going to Aruba". I was astonished. I ask to speak to a supervisor because I didn't want to deal with her. The supervisor allowed us to have our luggage as carry because it was within the width and length as a carry ons. This was the last time I ever flew United Airlines again. read more

What happened to the saying, you break it, you just bought it? Guess UA baggage services is the exception. In gist, I thought I would be taken care of. In the end, I was played like a funky piano by baggage services. Do not trust United Airlines with your luggage. After it is destroyed by their handlers, you are forced to accept a cheaper replacement. UA tore up my Samsonite (the handle which is used to pull the bag was no longer there) and refused to reimburse me for a like kind and quality. I am shocked any department can get away with being unresponsive for weeks. After 3 weeks of unanswered messages and calls, I called the toll free customer service line and was told to head over to baggage services and it would be taken care of immediately. By taken care of, they meant a new bag to use. None of which were Samsonite or anything close to it. Never heard of any of the brands, except Kenneth Cole Reaction. read more

This airline constantly has issues with their planes. All the time. Constant delays in take offs, causing for missed connecting flights. Thing is, UNITED DOESNT CARE. This is the last time I am missing a connecting flight, because this is the last time I am flying United. What a horrible, trash, unprofessional airline. Such a fucking joke of a company. read more

Slowly warming to United. As I wrote in a previous review for United in Seattle, I said that I would only fly United if they have lower fares than everyone else or make the in-flight experience a little more pleasant. Well, United happened to be running a flash fare sale on flights to Chicago for less than $90 RT so I decided to give them another chance. I booked a birthday trip on United with a same day turnaround. United doesn't have a big presence in Seattle, but it is still sizable as it flies to 7 cities including Chicago. But it doesn't compare to the operation at O'Hare which takes up practically all of Terminal 1. Flights between Seattle and Chicago take about 4 hours. As I was taking a red eye flight to Chicago and then flying back the same evening, I decided to get a window seat. They use Boeing 737 planes on this route and I found the economy seating to be okay. Average legroom, but not good for sleeping. Though the lighting in the main cabin were shut off for most of the flights on both segments. I did get a blanket on the red eye to Chicago, but no pillow. As for food and entertainment, it is pretty typical. They serve a beverage with a snack mix most of the day. On their morning flights, they give out stroopwafels. As for entertainment, the flight had DirecTV like JetBlue. However, United charges for this service. If you are not using this service and want to turn off the screen, pressing on the brightness settings on the remote will do this. In regards to the Chicago United operations, flights are out of Terminal 1 which I disliked. There are long security lines and the airside terminal was underwhelming. There are some decent eateries, but there are not enough seats at some gates and free airport Wi-Fi is only for 30 minutes. At the United self check-in kiosk, I was offered the opportunity to volunteer to switch flights in exchange for a voucher as flights to Seattle were very full. Upon looking at options, I noticed that you can change flights for a $75 fee. There was an earlier flight that I could have taken, but I would have had to pay that fee. If I had been able to catch that flight without that fee, I would have taken up that offer to switch. This just seems indicative that the airline won't miss any opportunity to make a buck. Overall, I found my flights to and from Chicago on United to be adequate. The biggest reason being that both flights were on time with the flight to Seattle arriving earlier than the scheduled time. But things like charging for DirecTV when it is free on JetBlue is indicative that it is not on par yet with the best domestic airlines. Though this trip made me cautiously optimistic that United is making improvements to become a better airline. At least I hope so since I am flying United again on a long international flight (15 hours!) next week. read more

I can't believe these rickety ass planes are still in use. Their 757's still have Airfones installed, even though they don't work and probably haven't functioned in years. I was dumbstruck when I found out I couldn't connect to Gogo (or any other provider for that matter). What the hell am I supposed to do for 4 hours?! Certainly not try to watch the miserable in-flight entertainment. I saw the same episode of "Friday Night Lights" twice in the same day. Once from Atlanta to Chicago and then again from Chicago to Los Angeles. I ended up tuning to Channel 9 on my headset to listen to air traffic control. Yeah, it was like that... All of my experiences have been disappointing, although I will say their frequent flyer program has great rewards. Ticket prices are reasonable and I like their a-la cart options for leg room and other upgrades. I just wish they would upgrade their planes.
