Staff is lazy and unfriendly, they knew that the staff was over on time but they wasted the time of the passengers and made us get on the plane then get off, and wait 2 more hours, after making us wait 4 hours before that while they fix the plane, instead of giving us an replacement plane! They said it was faster to fix it, it was not. They are an rundown airlines with old braking down old planes! Then they give us only $7.00 voucher for lunch, what a joke! Service is terrible. Flight delayed. Passengers waiting are only asking for United agents to tell them what is happening - finally they informed us about 15 minutes before new boarding time. When United employees pass tired and concerned passengers (customers), they should acknowledge them with eye contact and inform them they will assist in a moment. 6 hours late. No explanation at all. I travel quite a bit and I am pretty understanding when it comes to delays because of weather or mechanical issues. I am however, not understanding when you fail to run your business properly. For example, customer service should be the very bare minimum when you run a business, no customers no business. Pretty simple. Another example, how do you book flights without having any pilots or crew to man it? I get that things happen but I find that most of my flights on United are delayed because of this more often than any weather or mechanical delay. I recently experienced the worst trip home of my life and while United may not control the weather they certainly control their communication or lack of. I arrived in Bangor, Maine an hour before my departure to get a text that my flight was related 3 hours due to a plane obstructing a gate which made no sense and was the first of many miscommunications. Later the pilot said it was due to weather. My experience for the actual airport will be a separate review but we waited about an hour to get to the counter as the staff was completely unprepared for the long line of frustrated travelers. One counter girl was particularly frustrated and really stressed me out. She made the most sarcastic remarks, continually rolled her eyes and kept sighing out loud. Hey at least you get to go home after this! The girl with the glasses was calmer but took FOREVER getting people through the line. We were told our connecting flight was delayed BUT just in case they gave us a choice to book for a 8am or 10am flight. Figuring I rather sleep a little at a hotel since I anticipated being stuck in Chicago overnight I choose 10am. By the way, all monitors continued to show my flight as ON TIME! Before we got on the flight we were still being told we may still make the connecting flight. We get to Chicago and are handed vouchers for airport food and a $61 hotel voucher for an already chosen hotel and then our boarding passes for our morning flight AT 5:45PM!!! My flight home is now in the evening! The lady at the gate told me to go to customer service after I questioned her about the change. So at the counter I'm told my 10am flight did indeed get taken from me but they couldn't give me a reason as to why. Fantastic. So I did end up getting booked on a different flight BUT there was to be yet another connecting flight so I'm now headed to Denver in the morning at 9am. Now comes the cherry on the top, I'm told to go outside and there's a shuttle that will take me to the hotel on the voucher that is just 10minutes away. So I did and waited in the cold freezing rain for an hour and a half! Finally I get in this dinky van and we drive and drive and drive for 30 minutes and oh god, we stop at the worst dump next to a freeway. This place is so disgusting and had standing water next to the elevator, dirty towels, stains on the carpet, stains on the walls, disconnected shower head and cracks EVERYWHERE!! Why torture me further?!? The Howard Johnson in Addison should be condemned and shame on United for stuffing their passengers into this hellhole. We all gasped when we drove up but what awaited inside was the real horror. I have pictures that I'm posting to the hotel review. The driver then tells us that we will get picked up at 8am although the lady in the morning told me I should have been picked up at 6am. We'll I BARELY made my flight! United, give a voucher for a hotel of MY choice, don't throw me into a rat hole to save money. I much rather have a discount or voucher off of a hotel of my choosing. The last thing a frustrated traveler wants is to sleep in their clothes and shoes because their hotel is unsanitary!!! We need a good nights sleep! After arriving in San Diego I received a text saying my 6:20 flight changed gates... I NEVER had a 6:20 flight! The one star is for the flight attendants, they are very professional and friendly although almost all my seats were dirty, I think I have a pic of at least one of my trays. I'm so tired right now. I booked a day trip to Chicago to handle some business. Originally I was excited because I got an excellent deal on it. Almost too good to be true. Keyword: ALMOST. Since I'm rating United at the Chicago airport, I'm going to write about my experience specifically there. My flight leaving out of ORD was supposed to leave at 915 and arrive to my destination around 1145. My flight was delayed at least twice and now won't leave until 11:25 pm. Initially they claimed "operational issues" which customer service could not explain (I asked to give them the benefit of the doubt). Now the plane just arrived and they're claiming it's because of a late aircraft arrival. Once we arrive at the gate (traveling with the hubby), I go straight to the podium to see if we can upgrade our seats to economy plus. Mind you, I'm silver elite, however rinky dink it is... One of the perks is that I can upgrade to economy plus free of charge within 24 hours of my flight. For some reason at checkin I couldn't change it. So when I go to the podium I politely ask if I can check for an upgrade to the economy plus seating. This united employee automatically tells me that he would have to charge me for it. I tell him, nice assumption but I'm silver and last time I checked there was no fee for that. He starts clicking buttons as if he didn't believe me (although my paper ticket clearly says I'm silver). He then tells me that he couldn't charge me in the system (uh duh... I'm silver). I've been really disappointed with United customer service... "We're not happy until you're not happy!" That was the slogan one of their flight attendants boasted about the new United Airlines. We took a 13 hour flight to China direct from Chicago and boy was that a sorry ass flight! I felt like prisoners were treated even better than we were on that plane. We were only served 2 meals smaller than the size of your smallest frozen TV dinner portion and for snack we were given 1/3 of a sandwich. Yes, not 1 whole sandwich and not 1/2 of a sandwich but a measly 1/3 of a sandwich. Can you believe they cut it that small? I definitely couldn't! To make matters worse, the 1/3 slice of sandwich held 1 piece of razor thin turkey meat. The flight attendant even called it "the walmart special." I'm not even kidding you--their portions of their meals were the size of my cell phone. It was a joke! The Mcdonald's happy meals for little kids were even bigger than this! I felt sorry for my bro (who is a big guy) because he is used to eating the equivalent of 2 big macs for 1 meal, and now he had to succumb to a meal he could finish in one bite. The worst thing was they didn't offer any other options for you to purchase just in case you were still hungry or even starving. It was definitely a shock flying with UAL after having flown with those luxury airlines such as Cathay Pacific where they offer you free Haagan Daaz ice cream, Toblerone chocolate, unlimited noodle soup anytime during the flight, plus 4 gourmet meals. I like United and am terrified to fly any other airline. Yes there are delays but if you rather get on a plane that hasn't been thoroughly fueled, cleaned and properly checked than you are a moron. Every airline I have ever flown has had delays and United is not an exception. But based on performance of their aircraft's and amenities such as TVs on the back of every seat with an option to rent a movie of your choice is pretty cool. So I went on a mileage run at the end of the year and achieved status. I fly United because I'm 6' 7" and Economy Plus is a godsend. I normally have the worst luck with airlines but this experience was definitely worth mentioning. I needed to get out to DC for a family emergency & booked the cheapest ticket I could find to get me there the fastest, happened to be thru United. I got to the airport 4hrs early to drop the car off for another fam member that had returned from DC & decided to check earlier flights. I found flight #1190 out of ORD to IAD (4/28) and spoke with a United rep at the gate, David H. I explained to David that I just wanted to be added standby if I could - that I wanted to get to DC as quick as possible but understood if the flight was fully booked since they were in the middle of boarding. I didn't go into any detail but said that we had a family emergency, etc. Without hesitating David booked me on the flight, gave me an exit row and walked me to the front of the line not before telling me he hoped things were OK and wished my family the best. After a tough week for my family - this small gesture meant the world to the us. Please pass along my sincere gratitude to David and U.A. How 'bout them friendly skies? I'm sitting in Chicago's O'Hare Airport, waiting for a United flight that has been delayed by four hours for faulty equipment. It really sucks, especially because I know that I'm missing a glorious day at home. But... while I'm definitely pissy today, UAL doesn't earn two stars from this experience alone. In 2006, I flew nearly 100K miles on United, and I was a satisfied and largely loyal customer. Since those heady days of my youth, things have slowly but perceptbly gotten worse. Constant equipment issues, unexplained delays, surly flight crews, and generally lousy service have become pretty much commonplace. In the mean time, they've certainly seen fit to charge me for just about everything I do while I'm in their care. Weather delays are cool. The occasional equipment failure is totally understandable. On United flights, there are no personal tv monitors. You are expected to either use your own personal device for which you must download the United app ( and that means they get to grab your data) or use one of their crappy tablets for $15. My battery isn't going to hold up during the flight but no power outlets on these old, old planes. Rhanks, United. Not that I miss their food, but no more meals. I wish there was a "no stars" rating. United is the worst airline flying. I was 1K and premier executive from the early 1990s to 2007, and left United for another airline. I currently have no status, but over 700,000 miles flown with the airline. I came back to United this year because of the merger with Continental. I have left the airline as of this last train wreck of a flight last night. Flying into Louisville, the airplane had a malfunction and we diverted into Indianapolis. I don't fault the airline for the diversion, although I question the maintenance team's capabilities as not one, but two pumps broke, and we were down to the emergency pump. We passengers were deplaned in Indianapolis, and told there would be a bus to take us on the 2 hour ride to Louisville. We were to be in Louisville by 6:30 p.m., and I (as well as other passengers) had meetings, etc. that we were scheduled for. It was a full 2 hours before we heard anything else. After 2 hours, we tried to get some information. We were told at that time there was a part on the way (after 2 hours?) and that we would be taking off in 75 minutes. At 11:00, the passengers (some with small children, and notably 3 passengers who had traveled internationally and were extremely tired) were told that we could not have a bus because the maintenance workers would not release the plane. Ultimately, they flew us on the broken plane to Louisville, arriving after midnight. Over rated!!! I think I just experienced one of the worst traveling experiences for the money.... 1. Nonstop ticket to WV was $1600-ridiculous 2. The flight was delayed and we weren't notified. The display read the wrong time and the website had the wrong time- ridiculous! 3. Finally got on the plane and there is no water to wash your hands in the bathroom-ridiculous! 4. Less said the better. United cannot compare to other international airlines. The domestic competition is a bit weak at the moment. Virgin doesn't fly as many routes but has newer nicer planes. American has its own issues. We have some miles to use and were fortunate enough to be able to use them at fairly convenient times. Past experiences have been flights cancelled (stranded overnight) due to rain and wind. As weather related (it wasn't that bad at all) you don't get squat. This latest time, I have noticed that the boarding process on United flights are useless. It seems to be the worst of all. Very slow because of random haphazard boarding. It seems like first class (fair enough) and then almost from the front to back. Obviously this takes ages. If you arrive at the airport early, good luck trying to catch an earlier flight. Even if they had standby seats, if you don't check before you go through security then you are SOL. Some of the planes are old and nasty. But there isn't much choice... read more

I left Pittsburgh approximately at 7:17 am to go to Chicago. It's only an hour long flight. As the plane got closer to OHare Airport, the pilot suddenly announced that current weather conditions in Chicago would not allow us to land. Eventually the plane had to land in Indianapolis in order to refuel. That took about over an hour. By the time the plane arrived in Chicago I had missed my international flight, like two hours ago. The line to customer service was about two miles a long. Long story short, I've been waiting over 8 hours for my flight which was the only choice available. I was offered no apology nor any compensation. Not even a food voucher because "the weather is not in our control." Then why does United's website say otherwise? What type of business is this that inconveniences their customers? My entire day and the plans that I had made have been ruined! United Airlines! I can't stand you! Never again! read more

Toilet seat covers change themselves at the Chicago O HARE airport!!! Eeek! :-) While waiting for my flight from Chicago to LA I read reviews on Yelp about my perceived future experience with United Airlines. I was shaking in my boots- low stars and typically the stars do not lie. My flight with United was completely comfortable and fine. I was in the fifth group to board and was by myself. I thought surely there would be no room in the overhead bins for my ukulele carrying Jansport backpack-complete with crude pin of boobs covered by headphones on the front pocket. I assumed that when I boarded the plane I would have to frantically search for a promise of a space that I could shove my belongings in. No such thing happened. Yes, I was in the last group and found plenty of space for my things. Mind you, when they called my group I was one of the first to pop out of their chair and bolt for the lady checking boarding passes. The flight was 4 hours...so not too bad. It left Chicago O HARE at 7:12pm and arrived in LA ahead of schedule by about 15 minutes. The temperature on the plane was fantastic the whole time. All of my buttons and knobs worked properly. The flight attendants complimented my hair several times and were just super sweet and attentive. They have great respect for military and last minute moved a soldier in uniform up from the back of the plane towards the front of the plane since there was an empty seat. Even though it was a short flight, the beverage cart went by at least 3 times. Sound for the movie was excellent. read more

I flew united from VA to Vegas, going and coming back were both terrible. This company may have the worst customer service I have experienced traveling. Due to baggage fees there was only one flight out of our 4 that had room. They offered to check my backpack. I'm 6'4 and my feet barely fit. Being that there were some extra seats and people with three bags I found this frustrating. So my last flight there were four people in 4 exit rows. One was completely empty. One person was handicap, which I'm not even sure is allowed in exit row. Guaranteed only one door would have gotten open without someone else helping. But regardless unless you paid the expensive fee, that row was clearly remaining empty. Also sitting on the plane waiting to get off, two of my flights I watched the baggage guys just throwing luggage onto carts and some fell off the back side of the cart which they almost left on the tarmac. Ok last thing, my last flight coming home after 7 hour layover in Chicago. Got through waiting and went to scan my ticket and board the flight. The gate agent says we don't have seats, however we have tickets with seat assignments on them. So he says we can fix this and moves us 11 rows further back into the plane. Unreal service. UAL is consistently undependable. UAL's service at O'Hare is consistently rude and indifferent towards customers. Flights from O'Hare to MBS Saginaw are consistently delayed and cancelled. I have flown a lot over the world and have found ALL Asian airlines consistently superior to US airlines, especially UAL. I am writing this review regarding my husband's trip to California last month. He was traveling at a late night/early morning hour and the plane was absolutely freezing! He asked the flight attendant for a blanket & was rudely told "We don't have blankets for Coach." Really?!! My husband is a senior citizen, there were passengers with infants, etc, who NEEDED to get warm and NOT suffer on this flight! Perhaps United has a low budget (Don't believe it due to their sheer paying passenger numbers!!!) or they have gross insensitivity for their guest's suffering. This was indeed the case for my husband. If blankets are not readily available in Coach; your only alternative is to suffer I guess. Some terrific public relations, United Airlines! Downside: small (70 seat commuter craft) that was crampt with modest overhead storage bins (even for suitcase wheelies).....a beverage service ONLY that was served 1 hour into a 2.5 hour flight. No entertainment other than ones' own ipod or PC or iphone. A pleasant but no-smiley inflight crew. Welcome aboard? Hmmmm. I wish there was the ability to give zero stars, as that is what I would give United Airlines. For the most part I had had a mediocre time flying united but this last experience took the cake. (To preface - I fly every week for work and have seen a lot in airline incompetence but this takes the cake) Flying between Cedar Rapids, IA to Washington DC with a connection in Chicago, naturally we had to gate check our carryons with the standard green tags for the small shuttle airplane we took for the 40 minute flight from IA to Chicago. When arriving to Chicago I was left waiting on the jet bridge when they told me there were no more gate bags to come out. After having the bag guys check twice in the belly of the plane, they told me that I would need to go talk to Customer Service. CS then informed me that id need to file a claim in DC (even though there was nothing on my bag directing it to DC) or I could wait around and take a later flight out of Chicago (that they'd charge me to switch to). After taking 30 min to file my bag claim in DC, they informed me that my bag scanned into the flight to Chicago but not off and there was no record of where it would be. I stupidly elected to have text msg updates on my bag. I was woken up at ~midnight and ~5am respectively by txt alerts telling me that there was no news....it was definitely critical to wake me up and tell me that. By 4 pm the next day there was no news so I called CS where they manually entered my tracking info and found my bag in Kansas...was it being sent to DC? They don't know but sent a message to KS to direct my bag to DC and would call and confirm with the next hour. 4 hours later and no response. I call back, and my bag is now in Arkansas (no one can tell me why these updates aren't available on my online tracking link). Is it coming to DC? They don't know...they send another note...promise to call back and confirm. Next morning and still no confirmation, call and they can then confirm my bag is being sent to DC. My biggest issue with all of this is HOW IN THE WORLD is an UNACCOMPANIED BAG making it through security checks in so many airports without raising a red flag? Also, I'm fairly positive that I would never have seen my bag again if I hadn't been so aggressive and calling for updates. Complete fail on the part of united. read more

Due to a mechanical problem of one THEIR aircrafts, my flight from SMF to ORD was delayed by two hours. I thought I may have been able to catch my connecting flight to Buffalo but got to the gate TWO MINUTES after it had departed. You would think somebody in charge would have thought to have wait 5-10 minutes for the missing passenger who had been on THEIR DELAYED plane and had just arrived. Way to be diligent, whoever worked gate B2 on 11/26/2015. Mind you, this is on Thanksgiving; my 8 hour travel time quickly turned into 16 hours of travel, not to mention my commute to and from the airports! Your horrible company is now extending my travel time by 8 hours, where I will HOPEFULLY arrive in Buffalo at 10:30 pm. I will also mention that the United Airlines customer assistance desk DOES not assist customers. They will NOT comp you for their incompetence. The star "customer assistant" has to be Mike at the United Airlines customer assistance desk. He was RUDE and OFF PUTTING, just wanted to get you on another flight out of his face instead of offering any sympathy. He is most likely in his early 30's, white male with glasses and short hair. It's like he does not know how to handle people in these situations because he was not helpful at all and felt no remorse for his customer who his company managed to fuck over on Thanksgiving. Maybe you should be grateful that people spend money on this shit company so they don't have to downsize their staff and fire you for your ineptitude. I was very disappointed with United's install of directv. I flew from DC to OHARE last week on a 737-700 with Directv. The problem is the directv! 1) I don't want to watch constant commercials while in flight. I had an isle seat and could have gotten a seizure watching all of the adds to order their service on all visible displays down the isle (if I were epileptic). 2) The isle seat legroom is the BIG problem. They turned a preferred seat into the worst seat. The directv tuner box replaces the support pillar between the middle and isle seat. Then the support pillar was moved inboard (toward the center of the plane) stealing about 3" of my side to side legroom in the isle seat. Forced to remove a couple of items, I barely could squeeze my bag between the supports under the seat in front of me in this new configuration. THIS SUCKS UNITED! I hate this stupid directv when it steals isle legroom. YUCK! How can normal sized people fit in these seats? I will start doing more business by teleconference. Get rid of directv. This makes the middle seat look good (which it is NOT). I think I could get a better seat on Aeroflot. read more

Flight was suppose to be at 8:15pm and it was delayed for another hour. The reason for the delay was because the airplane was still in the airport hanger. So, 9:15pm comes around and it was delayed yet again and the check in staff at the counter told us that the pilot and co-pilot are just on there way to pick up the plane... Well, scrolling through United's page on Yelp, you do find some people who come just to say KUDOS, which you cannot find on AA, at all. I'm here to say the same, too. I like United Airlines. I always have, even before I got on their Mileage Plus Program. Even before I got their Mileage Plus Platinum Chase Card (double miles on gas and groceries, OMG). I am admittedly new to mileage awards, and have always opted for the cashback options for credit cards, but it's now an obsession for me. I buy everything on this card only to turn around and pay it off with money. I have gotten into debates about not wanting to take the cheaper and quicker flight on a different airline so that I can take the more expensive and longer flight on United - JUST to accrue the miles. (I know, I know... I am sometimes not the brightest bulb in the drawer.... and believe me if you knew some of the dumbass decisions I've made lately, you'd agree.) But getting back to United... Flights are usually on time, barring natural catastrophes, and even when those hit - - I find that United doesn't cancel the flight I was on, it simply delays until they can fly us out. Furthermore, while the staff is a hit or miss, they don't have these ridiculous "no discussion" policies if/when a passenger should arrive one minute later than the recommended time. They make - gasp - exceptions! On my latest trip - - I was even more impressed with United. Archie R, being the world traveler he is, is like a super-duper 1K Elite PREMIER WHATEVER member on United. It turns out that they, in turn, can give away a premier membership to ONE SPECIAL PERSON, per year. Well this year, I struck gold, because I was that recipient. I know, I'm a lucky girl.... you wouldn't believe how lucky if I told you! So - - on a roundtrip to and from Atlanta to SFO - - my luggage was tagged w/ 'PREMIER' and came out first, each time. In the future, when I buy a ticket, I am offered Economy Plus Seating automatically, free of charge (which can cost anywhere from 29-69 extra per leg - for four inches more legroom, yay) - - or if I am flying business - I accrue the same mile bonuses that only PREMIER members get. Not just that - but I fly ahead of the regular bozos on the upgrade list, because I am - gasp - PREMIER... even if only by gift. :-) How freakin' COOL is that?!?!! (Archie - thank you, you're the best!!) If/when there is a premier line for check-in or security - - there I go again, first! With enough accrued miles, I get 500 mile upgrade certificates, wooo hoo!! It's good to have friends in high places.... just when I think it wasn't possible to become any cooler than I already am, eh? (That's a joke, folks...) OK - now back to reality.... United has really never let me down. Perhaps it's just my luck - - but so far (knock on wood) all of their flights have been superb except for the occasional turbulence, which is out of the airline's control. The only thing that really counts against United is that Starwood points transfer over 1:2 instead of 1:1 which is a HUGE disadvantage to me. United, get workin' on fixing that!!!!! Ridiculous! This leaves me in a predicament - - use American (which I hate) to get 1:1 or stay w/ United and keep Starwood pts and United separate always? Me and UA recently had a one month relationship: - I visited 5 different airports within same month all via UA. - UA misplaced 2 bags but from two separate trips. - I had 1 canceled flight due to mechanical error (thankfully caught right before lift off). Luggage was eventually returned. I made it safe and sound to all my destinations. I don't really have much to complain. I missed Hurricane Sandy by a week and a half (still keeping everyone, friends included, affected in my thoughts). I mostly fly United for work; otherwise I would look at other airlines first. read more

This airline is about what you'd expect from any airline these days. Nothing special. Neither great, nor disappointing. The flight attendants are respectful and polite, helpful to answer questions while at the terminal. The flights are nothing like they used to be years ago with plenty of leg room, free food and drink, but its what you expect these days: non-alcoholic drinks mid flight, no snacks. Is it great? Yikes! So first off my wife and I needed to go to South Dakota for a family thing. We wanted to ask how to take a carseat. Like, do we check at the counter, or do we bring it to the gate and they take it from there? Well? I still haven't figured out. Their over the phone customer service was terrible! I know it's trendy to outsource, but fuck me, when I am droppoing over 1G, I want to understand the people I talk to! Shit, I had to ask every question three times before I just gave up undertanding them. So little Jeffy was pretty sick and we cancelled the flights. Can we keep the ticket value? Yes, -$150. Can we transfer? No. Dammit. Well I guess I get a free trip somwhere close. So I book a flight to SFO to see my brother. Hey! Look, the flights are well over $100 more expensive than Southwest! Alrighty... Come flight day. I'm waiting in the SkyWest waiting room at PDX, more like basement dungeon, and guess what? The flight's late! Their excuse? Weather. What was the Bay Area weather? Overcast. Overcast? OVERCAST!? What the hell?! Shit, I lived in both Portland and Seattle and if either of those cities' airports were delayed because of overcast EVERY FLIGHT, EVERY DAY would be delayed. I call Shennanigans! Too bad, the people at the counter were dumb as bricks, and the real problem was that in SFO when there's even slight fog, the big runway shuts down. Here's to adequate explanations. Clink! So two hours later, we're on the plane. I'm miffed, but at least SFO is my destination, several people on the flight were heading to places like Seoul and Frankfurt, and because of the delay missed their connecting flight. Things went well in the sky and we landed just fine. I thought to myself when I was there, "hmm, maybe this was just a one day thing." Hoho! Not a chance! I comeback to SFO to find one big clusterfuck. First we're at gate 70. Then 20 mintues before our plane is supposed to board we are sent to the other side of the terminal to 77B. On the way there I keep reading signs that say the flight is delayed, and you better believe it, these signs said the reason for the delay was "Aircraft delayed". Hmm, this board says "Now Boarding: Phoenix"... what the hell? After asking the people at the gate, and having to assure the rest fo the confused passengers that this was indeed the correct gate, cause the people at the gate couldn't give enough of a fuck to do the same over the PA. Turns out that so many flights are delayed that they don't have any gates for our plane. So I see a small plane go from the runway into the tarmac, past our gate, then back toward the runway, then back past our gate. Turns out that plane was ours waiting for a friggin' gate to open. 45 minutes later we are FINALLY in the air... Sadly, the in the air service was pretty darn good. 4 star good, but the shitty mess on the ground was just so bad that I have to give the entire organization 2 stars. read more

Apathy and total disregard for the passenger. Our gate agent on flight 417 ORD to PDX on Nov 8, 2011 required all passengers in boarding group 4 and the last half of group 3 to gate check their roller bags. We were told it was mandatory and, that the bins were full. We dutifully complied and found the exact opposite onboard: empty bins. When questioned, a flight attendant admitted it was to speed on-time departure. Shameful. I'd packed fragile items that shouldn't have been checked and yes, broken upon arrival at PDX. Even worse, as I was exiting the aircraft I commented to the flight attendant that the forced gate check was a really poor customer service idea......the captain, standing nearby yelled out "email jeff.smisek@united.com, the CEO. He'll care, we don't" = yup, just what I expected from United. An airline that doesn't care. Well, we passengers do have a choice and my choice will NOT be United when I need to book my next trip. read more

No one cares about these reviews but of course I needed to do something to share my experience of the 4hr delay from ORD to New Orleans. Completely started the trip on the wrong foot. Instead of landing in NOLA at 8 we landed after midnight, good luck trying to grab dinner at that time of night. Delayed due to late arriving aircraft, not weather, which I woulda understood. It's not that difficult to provide good customer service, have timely arrivals and departures, and smooth landings. United lacks each of these. Fly with another airline. Flight delayed 6 hours New plane didn't have the oil services when brought to the gate Sat on the plane for an hour after boarding when it was 90+ degrees out Plane wasn't loaded properly so one passenger was made to get off and they had to rearrange the luggage Began taxiing on runaway and were then told the plane was over fueled so we had to burn it off prior to take off This was all for one flight! No one will get reprimanded for not doing their job that could literally cost the lives of many individuals. United won't give customers back a dime for an entire day of suffering and of their time lost not being able to see family or friends or get to work on time. Absolutely unacceptable. Of course capitalism reigns supreme and they're not liable for any of this. Avoid this airline and O'Hare. read more

I fly United a lot and have found it to be a pretty good airline. That said the bar is not high for airlines. They typically fly everywhere I want to go and they definitely take care of the frequent fliers better than some of the other airlines do. The few times they don't fly where I want to go there has always been a Star Alliance airline that did and I had no issues. The biggest issue I have with them is some of their planes are OLD and look & feel their age. This tends to be with the mid sized jets. They are slowly replacing/modernizing the old planes, but when you get stuck on one it kind of sucks. If you fly to a lot of regional airports you will end up on their small planes which are some of their nicest. There is more legroom so basically every seat is like an Economy Plus which is pretty nice. The service is decent from the inflight crews, but I don't usually care about that since all they really do is bring you a drink and food. The service I care about is at the gate and the airport desks. Those are the people who actually get people on the plane quickly and help you out when weather or whatever other mysterious event causes cancellations. They almost always manage to find a replacement flight for me that isn't too bad and the couple times they haven't they refunded my tickets without question so I could just go rent a car and drive. Other airlines will not do this and will just tell you there is a flight the next day and hotel voucher you. I'm very glad United understands that people have schedules they have to keep. read more
