I had a decent experience. I caught my flight and made it to where I needed to go. I'd use this airline again.

My family and I were here an hour before our flight was scheduled to takeoff. It took us about five minutes to get to the check-in counter. When we got there, we had to get our bag tagged and since we're military, we have to have somebody come verify our status. Sandra, had us wait 15 minutes in line because no one was coming to the kiosk and by the time we got to the counter, she said it was too late to check our bags and we missed our flight. Before I begin let me start off by saying that this review is based solely upon my personal experiences and my personal experiences alone, so without further delay please let's begin!. This is my first time I booked a flight with United Airlines, and this was almost my last at the same time! Why you ask? Because: My wife and I arrived at the airport at least an hour and a half before our flight boards! We were standing in the checkout line at least an hour just to check our one suitcase in. It came to a point where they said it was too late to check in luggage, what? We were there for at least an hour in line, how can you say that? It's not our fault there was a delay in check in on their behalf... After more than an hour passed and one of the attendants ask who was traveling to Newark, about 10 or maybe more people shouted out! At this point my wife already headed towards the gate to advise them of the delay at check in! So they were able to radio each other about the people including myself that was waiting to check in with luggage!. Finally I get my luggage checked in and I sprint to TSA! ( Luckily I have TSA pre check so I was able to zip through and then sprint again to my boarding gate!. Let me say this is the first time that I have almost missed a flight and I have been flying as long as I can remember! Will I fly again with United Airlines you ask? The flight on the way home was a MUCH different story... there were storms in the area we were flying into. We were originally supposed to leave at 5:35 PM and ended up leaving well past 9 PM. The problem I had with this isn't that the flight was delayed because of storms (I understand it's a safety concern), but the way United dealt with communication. We received little to no communication or updates, which was beyond frustrating. As compensation, they provided a $15 dollar meal voucher to "make up" for the delay, only can be used on United flights. I will be avoiding this airline from now on. read more

Both the flight out to Virginia and the flight back to Denver were chaotic. First, there were 6 gate changes for the flight out of Denver. Then coming back, the early flight was delayed 2 hours because there was no flight crew. Really United? Thought you were a premier carrier, but reality proves differently . read more

This plane experience was god awful. This blonde hippo kept telling my family i couldn't be on my phone and then she whispered in my ear "you need to behave before you get kicked off the flight." which was disgusting her breath smelt like drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, cocaine, and so on. and i was very uncomfortable. plus she looked at least 60 she doesn't need to be smelling like that. very unhappy, do NOT recommend this experience!!! read more

I'm not a fan of United and I haven't been for some time now. It's rare that I don't have issues with their flights. The only exception is overseas travel which seems to be a bit more reliable. Today, flying to London from Norfolk going through Newark. Notified approx 15 minutes from departing for airport my flight is delayed for 57 minutes (I had a 1 hr 15 min layover in Newark) so now I'm missing my connection. When I get to the airport the gate agent tells me there's nothing she can do and it's weather related bc of the flight from Charlotte. I look up Charlotte and it's 66 degrees and sunny. They say everything is weather so they don't have to compensate people. My ticket was over $1700. And now I'm arriving three hours later and may miss two tours I paid $100 for. So, I'm not very happy. Finally rebooked after I had to argue despite the fact that they had many other carriers with flights leaving that would've gotten me there on time but said bc of weather they wouldn't do that. And there wasn't any weather bc it was perfect in Charlotte and I checked Newark and no issues there either. So they lie to get out of compensating people and it's infuriating. Everyone knows they do this - but it's so blatant that it's shameful at this point. I dislike their app because it's not as easy to use to rebook or track flights and bags and seats as Delta and it isn't as user friendly or appealing. They're def one of the airlines I only book if I have no other option and today is just one more reason why. I'm still sitting here on the tarmac for my rebooked, rerouted flight as we "burn fuel" bc we were too heavy and we're now 40 minutes late on the takeoff for this flight. Worst airline ever. They canceled the flight, didn't give any options to get me to destination close to time, then told me they wouldn't give a discount/refund/upgrade. Actually I got a down grade from economy plus to economy and my original seats were together but now separated. I was actually threatened with security because I was not going away with the rescheduling. I am now out the money for a hotel that is non refundable and two Uber fares to and from the airport. I had a travel nightmare a few weeks ago that essentially stemmed from east coast weather, and got worse with aircraft maintenance and crew rest complications resulting in cancelled flights. Stranded in Newark, I was stuck with Lyfting back and forth to a Staten Island hotel in the middle of the night, lost luggage...the whole bit. When I later requested reimbursement with supporting receipts, their compensation was more than fair, and luggage return to my home across state lines (I live in Nc and nearest airport is in VA) was as prompt and easy as possible! Your company was my go to. I had the app and preferred to fly with united. But this a trip we a nightmare. I booked first class seats for my birthday present to my self. I boarded the flight from Norfolk VA to LAX. On the flight from Norfolk to Houston which was my transfer flight I was given a coach seat. I approached the counter in Houston C4 to ask why my first class seats says 38C. I explained I payed 1168.00 for a one way first class ticket because I have an anxiety disorder and would never book coach. The people at the desk was beyond rude insisting I have a coach seat. As I boarded the flight I started to have a panic attack, the seat they assigned me to was not only in coach but a middle seat. I had an appointment with my Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon that I booked weeks in advance. I tried to tell myself that I better try to sit there and later file a complaint. All the time I have customer service on the phone. Every time I sat in the seat I felt dizzy, short of breath and nauseous, sweating profusely. I told the airline staff that I would never have booked a first class flight to Houston then coach from Houston to Lax. 1168$ one way is not what you would pay for coach. The desk supervisor, a Filipino woman came on the flight with abusive language and told me your getting off of this plane. I ran to my seat with passengers recording everything. And sat down. The Philippine woman said if I didn't get off the plane she would get all the other passengers off and force me off and I would be arrested. At first I was at such a heightened level of panic, I said I don't care and the captain got on the mic a told all passengers to get off the plane. A very compassionate flight attendant explained to me in a respectful tone that I should just get off because they wanted to get me arrested. Most of the passengers were taking videos and laughing. My grandson ended seeing the video and cried. read more

I'm not usually a United flier - I have Platinum status with Delta but they won't sell a ticket from ORF to any of the Washington-area airports - but this time I was on the regional jet from Norfolk to Dulles and then the turboprop for the flight back. I checked a suitcase at the counter and the folks up there did a fine job of taking care of it quickly and efficiently. I have no complaints there. At the gate, they also did a decent job of getting the flight boarded promptly, calling out preboards followed by 1K and Global Services and the rest of the boarding groups in order. Excellent. Our flight pushed back and departed on time. What more could you ask for? read more

Some young man comes At me with a wheelchair I swear he looks at me and he expects me to get out of his way and go around the other way! I am handicapped! Such rudeness is always expected at Norfolk international Airport! Did they get any training other than walking? I consider it your fault. Since side do you have a break and leg and I did not appreciate his staring me down we could've ended up in a very bad situation here! United Airlines continues to impress me with how exhaustingly poor their service is! I honestly wish I could give zero stars and have Yelp bankroll me some extra stars from other folks' reviews. Flying in to Raleigh earlier this week from New Jersey got us a cancelled flight notification only when I checked in to their self-help kiosks (which I am now calling their self-hell kiosks) to print my boarding pass. Helpful, United! I had originally had 90 minutes to board my flight, and now had 18. I had to schmooze my way through the TSA like a NYC subway panhandler ("I'm sorry but united has moved my flight and I only have 15 minutes to board, thank you, I'm sorry but united has..." etc) to make it through to my gate on time. Upon reaching the gate, I was greeted by a gate check attendant who seemed to operate under the assumption that I had chosen to come to her gate not to board my new flight, but to personally harass and antagonize her by swearing that United put me on this flight. "IM WORKING THIS FLIGHT" is the only thing she seemed to be able to say while furiously smashing her fingers into her touchscreen. As if by magic, her "IM WORKING THIS FLIGHT" chant brought to life my boarding pass in her system, which seemed to calm her down a little. I'll save you the details of sitting next to a Mr Walter who was born blessed with, apparently, one child-sized lung and one adult-sized lung made entirely of mucus, who sang to us all in the ass-end of the plane the song of his Phlegmfolk. Now I'm sitting in Norfolk's airport for a flight that was supposed to leave at 5:45. I didn't realize the departure screen I compulsively checked as I checked in to my returning flight was actually hexed and cursed me, once again, to another delayed flight. Pushed back not once, twice, but THREE. FUCKING. TIMES. From 5:45 to 6:30. From 6:30 to 7:18. And now from 7:18 to 8:10! All due to "Air Traffic Control Conditions", which apparently means "we don't know how to book flights". I think if I had stayed in Kitty Hawk, learned to channel the Wright Brothers, and built my own fucking plane, I'd be home faster. It's only 5:30, so who knows? It might get pushed back even further! Now intimately understanding United's complete and utter inadequacy and incompetence, not only will I refuse to fly with this airline EVER again (I'd rather pay double to another airline than deal with this shitshow), I'm expecting to get home around the same time that they finalize Trump's impeachment. A week in DC came up on the work calendar. Awesome, that is 4 segments on Delta and 2000 Medallion Miles. ORF-ATL-DCA-ATL-ORF. Probably upgraded on all segments. And James R. was smiling. Concur and airline regulations, however, had something else in mind. In short, you can't get thar from here, at least on Delta. Worse yet, the only option to DCA was USAir. Me and USAir, well, we have a bit of a past, and after a night of harsh words, it just wasn't going to work out, at least not without some sort of personality disguise. No, that bell could not be un-rung. (Editor's Note: Umm....isn't this a review of United Airlines? If so, don't you think it would be a good idea to at least mention them instead of two competing airlines?) When I got to ORF and checked my bag with USAir (which involves a long forgotten ritual of kissing those possessions goodbye because USAir hasn't met a bag they can't lose), off to the gate I went with the vim and vigor of a condemned criminal walking The Longest Mile. After an hour or so of watching The Follies, USAir decided that it wasn't possible to fly to DCA today. Maybe tomorrow? Or maybe I should talk to Hertz and get a rental car (that was their actual advice). No, wait.....we can get you to Dulles on United in 6 hours or so! Perfect, let's do it. Back to the United counter to get a boarding pass and see if my bag had any hope of surviving. The guy behind the counter was singularly uninterested in helping me out, probably those Continental Genes kicking in. After a certain amount of weeping and gnashing of teeth, he finally presented me with a boarding pass, so off to the departure gate I went, a man whose hopes had been thoroughly beaten to a pulp. So how is this a 4 star review? Easy enough. Her name is Dana and she is a United gate agent at ORF. Maybe it was the downtrodden look in my eyes, maybe she heard me slobbering uncontrollably to the Delta people about my day of travel....but...Dana listened. And cared. And (get this) actually called down to the baggage people to ask about my bag and to make sure that it got loaded on the plane! And apologized for what I had been through that day, not just because of anything United did, but for the entire day (she even wanted to take some responsibility for the weather but I wouldn't hear of it.). United People, listen up: Dana gets it. Watch her, learn from her. She is the epitome of what a gate agent can be and more. I watched her deal with difficult customers and never lose her cool and professional attitude while remaining empathetic and sympathetic. She restores confidence in the system. Sadly, she is not enough for me to toss away a few years of status with my go-to, but in the future if I must travel on another airline, it will be United. Probably. read more

I have yet to have a successful trip with United Airlines. United flights are too often delayed or canceled with no explanation or compensation. It was not the weather, it is due to United airlines consistently being behind schedule. This is also our second flight that they have lost our bags. Literally nothing goes right with United Airlines. Update: Our flight that was delayed last night to this morning was delayed again only 3 minutes before we were supposed to board the plane. I'm a United frequent flier, some years enough for premier status. Work doesn't always fly me United so I get to experience other airlines on a regular basis. Chose United for our honey moon. First flight is operationally delayed 45 min. night before. We have 2-3 hours built into our schedule at every stop, No problem. When we got to the airport we found out operationally meant Flight crew got in late night before and by FAA reg can't turn around and fly back without sleep. Bully for them for following regulation. Flight crew arrives starts plane (first flight of day for this plane), we get on-board pull away to find out one of the SPU's has fault light. 45 minutes of dicking with it out on tarmac, back to the gate we go. Plane back on airport power. Restart no problems. I used to work for a major aircraft manufacturer, whole thing sounded like pilot blew start procedure and had to try again (couldn't be tired could he?) Off we go. We land with enough time to OJ it to next flight with 10 min. to spare, or so we thought. They had just closed the door. We pleaded our case and after being chastised for not put the appropriate amount of time in our schedule. they opened the doors and let us in. Somehow this was our fault, WHAT? Need less to say we arrived at our port of debarkation (cruise), no bags. United treated us like we should had built more DAYS in our schedule so they could get around to completing the job we'd paid for. Carnival cruise line to save the day. United told us they could get our bags to us until our second stop (4 days). Carnival had them on the ship when we woke up first stop. Return trip. Left gate slightly late but fair winds find us 1 hour and 15 minutes ahead of schedule, this was a first for me. Upon landing we're told there's a plane at our gate. Guess who's running late. After sitting on tarmac for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Other plane leaves gate 1/2 hour late. Last flight of the day, somehow stayed in the air and arrived 15 minutes early. Moral, I've shredded my points card. This airline once the industry leader, can't make or follow a schedule and instead feels it's customers should plan days of buffer around them. Other airlines encounter problems. They apologize and promptly repair the damage as best they can. Stuff happens, shouldn't be 75% of the product, just apologize and fix it. read more

Granted this will be my second or third time with United Airlines but I had a not so smooth experience with them. My initial flight (from IAD to New Delhi) was canceled and I wasn't informed about it at all. Thankfully, I managed to check it online myself. But this was not the end, after reaching the IAD airport I realized that my premium economy ticket (that I paid for) was changed to regular seats. I managed to get the premium economy back but not the window seat that I had reserved earlier. I will wait to see if my experiences get better. read more

The absolute worst airlines and service! I received an email asking if I wanted to volunteer to give up my seat and travel on a later flight. I reported to the gate 90 minutes before departure and the gate attendant, Waldys, told me it was to early and to return just before boarding to give up my seat. I came back just before boarding and Devin Lovell told me I could not give up my seat. It was too late and I should have heard the announcement. He was quite curt and rude. read more

If I could give zero I would. I couldn't believe they would only let me take ONE personal item to put under the seat. They made me choose my handbag or my small tote which contained my meds and travel pillow. My purse would not fit in my tote and items in my tote would not fit in my purse. I would have had to pay to check my tote as well as the $30 I already paid for my checking my large suitcase. Luckily I had room in my large suitcase to stuff my purse to put in the large suitcase. I have never been told by any other airlines I could only take one carry on and a handbag counted as that one item. I will NEVER fly United again. Also they only self check and I had trouble printing my boarding pass and suitcase ticket. Luckily my son-in-law was there to help me. I was ready to have a meltdown from the stress! Was there 2 hours prior to flight and we still missed it. One person helping people check in baggage and personnel. Lady at front counter was arguing with people on phone trying to get the plane to hold for us but was unable to. Our baggage ended up on the flight but we got pushed to the next flight holding up our vacation. I'm normally not the one to complain but this started off our vacation on the wrong foot. read more

As I walked through the doors at Norfolk International Airport, I was immediately drawn to a man behind the United Airlines counter. His name, Billy. He checked me in, I checked him out. Memorized, I went into a day dream, imagining I was Rachel and he was Noah and we had just reconnected at his house he built and promised me. With my Notebook in my hand from TJ Maxx, it suddenly turned into a Nicholas Sparks book. I hugged the kiosk. Billy, (who is much better looking than Ryan Gosling by the way) brought me back to reality. I had to finish checking in. But Billy, I'll never stop checking you out. PS. I'm sorry about your kiosk. Third time this year on United only because of reward points. No seatback tv, some flights with wifi entertainment, some not. Not even in first class! SW has better entertainment. First class breakfast meal: cold cereal and yogurt. First class lunch meal: a banana. Late, late, late on every departure and arrival. Today, i had to literally RUN about a mile at ORD to make my connection. One positive is my checked bag actually got transferred in time to my last plane. I was pleasantly surprised. read more

I was stuck on the runway for 2 hours because someone at United did not get the proper paperwork. I missed my connecting flight into Buffalo, NY that night. I had to stay at a hotel in Newark, NJ and get a $20 cab ride. I tried to apply for reimbursement for the flight (or voucher for the inconvenience) and also for the hotel and cab right and it got denied. I tried to call customer service and the man was very rude and told me to go online. Never taking this flight AGAIN! read more
