Worst hospital experience. EVER. Between my parents, children and us, I have been to almost every hospital in the metro area. Multiple times. First time at United and would never go back. My husband's surgery was scheduled and then changed 3 days before surgery to a new day. The afternoon before surgery, the time was pushed back. Upon arrival it was pushed back. Then the surgery was still another hour later. It had to do with surgery room availability. If you are on My Chart, they send a lot of text messages. Most with very little information. One of them said to take normal meds on the morning of surgery with 2 sips of water. When we arrived, the nurse was upset that my husband took a particular med. He never received a pre-op phone call to discuss. Very strange. The surgery started late so I was left waiting in the surgical area for hours. They have an electronic board with color coding to tell you where the patient is in the process. They will also text you very brief messages that are generic. The board finally showed that my husband was out of surgery and so I packed up my laptop and waited for the doctor. I wasn't sure if they have a consult room or just come to you. No consult room. No one came. The person at the desk disappeared and never came back so no help there. I had to use the restroom but held it because no one had contacted me and I didn't want to miss the doctor. By now it was 4 hours post-surgery. I flagged down an employee walking down the hall and explained the situation. They said they would go to the surgery center and have someone contact me. 45 minutes later the center called and said my husband had been having some issues and they were waiting for a room to keep him overnight. The doctor finally came more than 5 hours post-surgery and apologized. It still was another hour for the room. By now it is after 7pm. My husband hasn't eaten in over 24 hours and is hungry. But the kitchen is closed. No one cared to ask if he was hungry while waiting for the room. He didn't have any dietary restrictions. The nurse finally brought him a cup of ice cream after 8pm. They also don't provide Kleenex, a toothbrush or toothpaste. Huh??? The next morning, the PA said he could go home soon. We waited, and waited and waited. The nursing staff disappeared. We finally buzzed them. We sat for 3 hours. Apparently they decided to fill the meds and were waiting. Here is the crazy part of that ... 3 of the meds were Tylenol, Advil and a stool softener. All of which we have at home in brand names vs. generic and they charged a lot. But the strangest part is when he was finally ready to go, they said he could leave. Did he want a transport downstairs? It could take another hour. Every hospital has always made us ride in a wheelchair due to liability issues. So we walked across the street to the parking ramp after surgery in the abdominal region. What??? The cafe is open shorter hours and the chicken enchilada special was very poor. The parking ramp (blue) is undergoing repair and is somewhat scary from a structural standpoint NOT recommended. read more

Staff was great! They took the time to personalize and talk to me about they're discoveries from my CT Scan- I didn't have a terrible time, although the vagrants that were there were a bit sickening for making they're own business an entire ER waiting rooms business- it seemed!?- everyone is already going through they're own-ITS THE ER- so why not just show some class more than broadcasting your issues for the world to hear- in the ER? My dad (84 year old who has suffered from severe nerve pain in his feet for over 15 years) was admitted urgently to the ER from Hasting's hospital due to an infected boil on his scrotum. The surgery went well, however, within 24 hours he was sent from the 2nd floor to the 3rd floor because of Carbon Dioxide poisoning. This was the fault of the 2nd floor even though they had my mom and brother convinced otherwise. With so much pain for years, a history of COPD, a terrible infection, surgery, a painful wound, and a variety of medications as well as the Carbon Dioxide poisoning it was clearly going to be a difficult road to recovery. After a few days on the 3rd floor, they moved him to a 24 hour watch room because he was displaying aggressive behavior on and off and also pulling at his IV and oxygen. I was able to speak with him from out of state coherently until he was under the 24 hour watch. I decided to get home to MN (from Texas) and not only relieve my mom and brother from being there for him for many hours a day, but also, of course, to be with and stay with my dad. We have been to too, too many hospitals and transitional cares over the years of him doctoring for me to be comfortable not being with him 24/7. Especially since he has already been through so much suffering and now there would be an awful wound to tend to. My two stars are for people like Natalie, the palliative care person who came and spoke so compassionately with me. Kristen, the social worker who did the same. Kim, his respiratory doctor who explained everything thoroughly to me and Ari and Pa his nurses for one of the 11pm shifts. Ari and Pa came in calmly and looked at both my dad and I while visiting with us before doing all of the things on their checklist and scrambling on the key board. They were the first nurses ALONG WITH the evening aide Lysander who took some moments of compassion and listening. Every other nurse and aide I experienced prior to Ari, Pa, and Ly were in a mad rush, click clacked on their screens, were difficult to understand, spoke too fast without articulation or consideration of my dad's hearing, whipped through care especially where my dad's very sore wound was concerned. On Thursday my dad asked me for water multiple times and I patiently waited for Aurora, his nurse, to comply. She kept telling me he needed the big mask and that she was worried about water going into his lungs. All day long he lay there listless with that mask on periodically asking me for water. By 9pm I told them all I was going to lose my shit if someone didn't give him a mask break and some water. That of course made them do what I asked after MORE WAITiNG!! I still didn't remove his mask and give him water myself even though tempted. No other nurses were worried about his lungs filling with water. There was no consistency to knowing the patient between shifts. They all just rely on those damn computers!!! What about patients? What about loved ones? What about compassion! Aurora sat my dad up, replaced the mask with the nasal oxygen tube, completed her drink test, and in minutes my dad was upright, lucid, took his pills, water and answered all of her questions with savvy and sass!! I explained to all of them that my dad is likely going home for comfort care and that comfort care would begin now! If we're about to watch our dad let go and pass on, we want nothing more than to give him as much comfort as possible. I am kind, compassionate, a 30 year high poverty public educator. I was very patient all day and it wasn't until I put my foot down before I got my dad what he needed. I even put him on the phone with my mom because he was doing so great for the first time in days. He had a sore on his nose and when I asked for a bandaid Aurora told the aide no because she was putting the mask back on. UM, the night before his Resp doc specifically chose a mask that wouldn't rub on the cut on his nose. I went out and said, "I am asking for a bandaid not morphine! Please give me a bandaid!" Around 10:30pm we got him all ready for bed. The bandaid, the mask, his meds - then Aurora's shift was over at 11pm so she stormed in with, flipped on the bright lights and announced a shift change. Margaret and Irene were also nurses who worked very quickly and Margaret lacked compassion with me as the daughter who just flew in. She didn't talk to me about anything or acknowledge me and then told me I couldn't stay over. Well I did! Thank goodness my dad will rest well tonight with Ari, Pa, and Ly here. They have made both my dad and me comfortable within minutes of meeting them. Tomorrow I will take my dad out of here and let him be comfortable at home. Google gives United a 2.8 rating for a reason. Could be way worse, but also could be way better!!! Public Service employees/systems MUST improve or we all lose!! Hospitals are filled with people on a device trying to check all of their boxes and clock out. read more

I had an emergency appendectomy at United Hospital. From the moment I walked in the door to the moment I walked out, everyone I dealt with was outstanding. I cannot say enough good things about United Hospital. At a very vulnerable time in my life, they made the process seamless. United Hospital will continue to be my first choice of any hospital. read more

Elderly parent taken by ambulance to the ER and ultimately stayed in the hospital 5 days. We've been to United many times in past years. It's changed substantially and not for the better. For one thing, the patient areas in the facility were not clean and in poor repair. The bathroom inside of the ER was worse than a rest stop toilet. The room itself there was fairly clean. The ER docs and nurses were great and worked hard to diagnose what was going on. Once we got to a room, this was hit and miss. Some really outstanding nurses and kind aides, but also a lot of examples of what one would have expected to be done better - urine was left unemptied for almost 2 days. Wick on Pure Wick system was reused multiple times. Blood on curtain in patient room. Trash left around and cans overflowing. Room not cleaned at all for almost 3 days. My parent developed odd sores on multiple places after their stay. We were there for an infection, which was treated with multiple antibiotics, but the source never really identified and no info as to whether this would recur after meds were stopped. Call button took ages to answer on most occasions. I would be unlikely to go here again in an emergency and wouldn't book a surgery here. This is sadly fallen a lot from the United of even 5 years ago. Only giving this 3 stars instead of 1 as there really were some wonderful nurses that were helpful and skilled, but otherwise I'd give it 1 star. read more

My wife was a patient at United Hospital in 2023, she was enrolled in the United Hospital Spine Center Program, to undergo anterior/posterior cervical surgery. This program states "At United Hospital, doctors and nurses with special training in the treatment and management of spine conditions collaborate with other dedicated professionals to ensure you have the most positive outcome possible." As a post op patient the day after her surgery, the surgeon's assigned PA-C elevated her pain medication oxycodone to the highest dosage and time interval allowed for administration. My wife was "Opiate Naïve" (not presently on opiates), geriatric age, and had a pertinent medical history. Without regard to these facts and contradictory to CDC (Opiate Naïve) and other medical literature for patients such as my wife, she was authorized the new dosage. After receiving several of the increased dosages into the evening my wife threw up and aspirated vomitus causing her to go into cardiac arrest. The first medication of three given by the hospital resuscitation team was Narcan (medication to reverse opiate overdose). My wife regained a spontaneous pulse within 4 minutes of administration, but had to be intubated for breathing. In spite of the claim for collaboration with other professionals such as the surgeon and PA, neither the attending nurses or in-house floor physician questioned the oxycodone dosage and time frequency my wife was newly prescribed. But when my wife was found in cardiac arrest they instinctively knew to give Narcan as the first medication of choice. The "Code 99" cardiac arrest resuscitation form had only one of four pages filled out with nearly illegible documentation on the one and only page. The hospital did not know where the other 3 pages were or if they had even been filled out. My wife was transferred to the ICU as a rule out opiate toxicity and possible aspiration pneumonia. Upon review of additional patient records there were other noted discrepancies of care and documentation. My wife spent 7 days in the ICU and due to the aspiration and subsequent sepsis her organs started shutting down in addition to a small stroke and neurological changes. Our family was left with little hope for a recovery and we subsequently made the most difficult decision any family would ever have to make. To terminate life support!! There is no need to ask me to call a patient liaison representative. One of my wife's caregivers had approached me and advised that I should request a copy of my wife's patient medical records as "she received an overdose of oxycodone" and then to contact the hospital patient care liaison to request a meeting. I did that and subsequently my family members and I met with Dr. Jose Bernard Jr., Vice President Medical Affairs; Dr. Stephan Sinicropi, surgeon; and a lead nurse. We found the meeting to not be very productive and we feel it basically provided us with incomplete and vague information. Tip: Be sure to review the selection of hospitals and their ratings for elective care and specialized programs! read more

Don't try to get in the main entrance with a vehicle. People can't figure out how to follow the rules of no parking. The remodeled sections are really nice, but the old sections are kinda gross tbh... that being said, 99% of the staff I interacted with were stellar. I was sent here by my VA pulmonary team for COPD rehab. The eight week therapy (two sessions a week of two hours each), I am stronger and more educated about my conditions. I also learned about techniques for daily living with COPD. The therapists are all knowledgeable, friendly and professional. On top of that, they helped me get the supplementary oxygen prescription I've been hoping for for several years. It has changed my life. read more

If you're going to have to spend a holiday in the hospital and don't work there, I highly recommend United. Unexpected Covid complications, I was brought by ambulance. The nurses were attentive, emergency room doctor listened and didn't take too long to talk to me about test results. Worked with me to find a solution to manage symptoms. He was able to access past labs and see exactly what I told him about kidney function, what happened and why at another of their hospitals. Great patient experience all around. Most important, he truly focused on wanting best outcome for me. "I could keep you but I don't want to risk you getting a third infection. You're already fighting two bad ones. I think you're better off managing this at home" I agreed. read more

The lack of professionalism and cultural humility and competence was appalling. My best friend and her big family of 20+ went to United to visit their dying great grandmother. They are a predominantly Brown and Catholic family paying their last respects and wishes to their grandmother and the staff was insanely rude and showing no sort of empathy or understanding of cultural and religious differences. They were met with a lack of sense of urgency and the staff made many micro aggressive comments along with making security walk by them a few times "just in case for safety." The staff had condescending and insolent attitudes towards the family. They were being extremely unhelpful when trying to receive a priest for their grandmother. I understand the stress the nurses feel with a huge party coming to visit a loved one, but this was a final moment of a very important head figure and family member. There were no solutions given or good communication to find a way to productively help the family out. It wasn't until they had no choice but to request a patient advocacy support person to have a voice on their concerns. Even then, it was still a struggle to advocate for the family. One of the staff also asked an extremely inappropriate question regarding to the legal residency status of their grandmother as if depending on the answer, that was going to be the outcome of the care. Everyone deserves healthcare and treatment and to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of any status or color or religion. This is insane behavior, and I would hope that United would do better and teach their staff about the importance of dealing with cultural AND religious differences of patients and care, especially towards a dying patient. Whether there was mal intent or not, given the political climate and fear within our communities, there is a lot of grief, and I would hope that United would treat their patients and families with a little more cultural sensitivity and compassion. read more

The nurses were the best, first of all. I went in for a chronic mouth sore issue that was going on for almost 3 weeks!! I finally couldn't take the pain any more and went in for HELP,!! No help was given to me the ER doctor barely looked at me!! No swabs or any tests of any kind...then he prescribed a mouth rinse, it was peppermint!!! The pain when using this product almost floored me ..and when I was in ER I asked for pain meds for a day or two and he looked at me like I was crazy,!! I've never been on pain meds and haven't had any since my surgery 6 years ago...but he said no and now I am at home crying in pain...Thanks United!! You aren't worth my co pay!! read more

How can our Healthcare System be so messed up? I am sure everyone has encountered their moments and until you do it is a fight you have to be prepared to make. The sad part is in the end whether you get what you need or not the Hospital still wins some how. We spent the last few weeks pushing back against the Hospital to fight for what was right and in the end still denied along with pointing the finger at the insurance company, along with inadequate Language Interpreter Services and it's everyone else's fault. What the heck?! Maybe you have your coding or wording wrong, we proved that to be true and in the end still denied care at places that are on the approval list of the insurance company? I call bull****! I am so sick, disgusted, disappointed and more! We did everything that was asked of us and there was always someone else to blame and we were given a different answer and the hospital said we were wrong still! We spoke to probably about 10-15 different people, no one was helpful, staff members broke their own laws at this hospital. At the end of the time at this hospital we still left with an uneasy feeling and I feel horrible for the current and future patients especially if they need extra assistance for a voice or if they are alone! The staff and higher ups are unprofessional, rude, have no compassion, manipulative and so much more! I would do it all over again no matter what to stand up for EQUAL RIGHTS. Keep fighting, don't back down! Because of your determination and perseverance hopefully you have made some sort of change or impact. I just wish there was a support team to help make things just, right and fair. I will never return to this hospital again, laws were broken, the higher staff (above the nurses) were horrible and the lies they told to cover things up! Just disgusting- how can you sleep at night? Knowing you have denied the care to many people who needed it and probably ended up worse off or even dead?! The only thanks I have for all of this- To the interpreters that showed up everyday willing to be ready and help! You truly are an important piece for communication, to be a patients voice and ears! It took ONE nurse to never make me want to step foot in this building again. The malpractice was unbelievable. I was verbally and emotionally abused by this woman. People go to the hospital for many different reasons but they always deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Never, ever will I be admitted to another hospital. United is my hospital of choice and always will be! The care I have received here has literally saved and changed my life. In January of 2018, I became critically ill. A fever of 106 degrees F, a 'junky' cough, vomiting, and low blood pressure were some of the first symptoms. I ended up developing aspiration pneumonia and going into acute respiratory failure following my contraction of a "normal" flu-like virus (directly related to the immunosuppression used to treat rheumatoid arthritis + Crohn's disease). I was placed into a medically induced coma for the better part of a week. I was in the ICU for 5 days... intubated and on a ventilator... I vaguely remember brief moments and interactions, but there is so much confusion when I try to place it all on a timeline. Following my graduation from the ICU, I was moved to an inpatient floor for further monitoring and recovery. The 15+ breathing treatments I had to complete each day coupled with physical, occupational, and speech therapy made for long, hard days and restless sleep at night. They were some of the hardest days I've ever lived. But, I made it through! My journey to a fully and complete recovery is still in the works. The nurses I had during the duration of my stay at United were ALL phenomenal. My attending physician was also excellent; other specialists on my team (i.e. pulmonologist, pain management doc, social worker, etc.) were so comforting. I love this place and the values they promote. I hope that once I am fully recovered, I will be able to practice social work + eventually land a job at United. :) I graduated with my bachelors degree in May and look forward to all that lies ahead! read more

I brought my wife her the night of Dec. 8 everything up front was good but we ended up with a cocky bastard by the name of Dr. Roy made us feel like we were wasting his time smug,arrogant and rude to my wife then they had us stick around for a hour and a half to televising to another Dr. then there internet went out. My wife and I came back for lactation consultation. Julie was the nurse we saw when we were in post-partum as well as for our consultation. She was very helpful for my wife and provided a lot of advice. The same was true for Ronda who visited us at our home with a scale to weigh our baby. Even after the consultation and at-home visit by RN nurse, we also took advantage of Baby Café at St. Luke's church in St. Paul which is organized by United Hospital. Kim was great to provide additional support as well to new mom. Also, dads are welcome to join along with a small snack as well. Overall, my wife and I were very pleased that United Hospital provided so many opportunities for mothers even post-partum and after returning home/work. read more

My father was admitted over a week ago for kidney failure. Despite being vaccinated against the virus, he contracted the virus during his stay. The hospital then refused to allow him any visitors, which was heartbreaking for our family. All twelve us have been vaccinated and all of us have been careful. He then received a very grim diagnosis and still the hospital would not allow him any visitors for comfort and prayers. I appealed to so many staff members, including the social workers. They were apathetic to my pleas. I finally managed to convince one of the nurses to facetime with my father, who of course has no clue what that even means considering he is in his 90's. I organized siblings and we waited patiently for her call. And waited. And waited. After an hour I contacted the nurse and she said that their Ipads were broken. THROW ME A BONE United. No humanity. No comfort. Just blindly following political agendas without thoughts and concerns for their patients. If you have a choice, AVOID UNITED. read more

I'm so glad I live close to United Hospital. Its reassuring to know that there is a great team of health providers a stones throw from me. I have been here several times for several different reason ranging from visiting patients, being a patient, delivering supplies for patients etc. This hospital holds a lot of memories. The entrances are inviting and they have really tried to spruce up the aesthetics of the hospital not making it so institutional and drab looking which I think puts people at ease. Most people don't like going to the hospital anyway, but its always better when the place looks a little more inviting. Several parking ramps available. Coffee shops- serving Ginko Gift Shop Friendly and very helpful staff Cafeteria The only issue I had was the cafeteria food which was just unfortunate and not good food, but I rarely ever expect it to be when sysco systems food seems to be the norm. My spouse received post-op pain relief in the ER but only after waiting for 2 hours to be seen at 2 AM. She then had to endure another 3 hours of waiting for an exam, blood draw, CBC result and wound dressing before she was given a prescription for an antibiotic and a "few more" pain pills and discharged. Of course the prescription could not be filled until 9AM leaving her in the same predicament she arrived in. Nothing available to adequately control the pain! The ER did not seem very busy which doesn't explain the delay. Everyone was professionally pleasant but the constant laughing and banter from the staff at the station that was caring for my wife for hours made it seem as if she was the last thing on their mind. Do not under any circumstances go to or bring anyone you love to Allina United Hospital. Our family member was critically injured at United (as an in-patient) including a misdiagnosis. The patient should have been discharged in 2-3 days from a minor surgery. Instead the patient needed a long term stay and will not be able to return home for quite some time. Allina & United leadership hide behind their assistants and emails, refusing to help. There are a number of employees (not all, there are some great nurses) who are the most crass, uncaring, lack compassion people you could have the displeasure of dealing with. I had wonderful service at United Hospital. It was noisy and could be a little scary sometimes but mostly because you are sick and hooked up to monitors and the walls are a little thin and you hear only one side of conversations. The most important aspects of my stay were great. I had to have a nurse with me every time I used the bathroom because I was hooked up to things and they were always prompt and cheerful and caring. They all helped each other whether RN or Aide with this. They treat you as if you are an intelligent person. They were prompt about coming in and turning off the beepers from my lines. I had good doctors and despite major surgery, very little pain. read more

Dr. Horras goes beyond helping and truly cares about his patients and their needs. His nurses and staff are phenomenal, too! Dedication is the name of the game with his clinic. I finally have my daughter back feeling better about herself and wanting to make the most of her life. This is a loud "shoutout" to give credit where credit is deserved. This hospital is the worse place to send your love ones to, especially if they are old and have English as a second language. They are not culture sensitive. The charge nurse at the Nero ICU said my mother who had a stroke was not being honest when she gave the nursing staff about her pain when she described her pain as "I feel like my head going to explode." This unit also like to gossip about their patients and their family. The next day I called the day charge nurse took the phone from another nurse while I was talking and told me I cannot talk to my mother or her nurse. If my mother needs anything she can call the interpreter. Not just the ICU that failed us, but unit 4900 also failed us badly. They hide my mother's cell phone so she couldn't call me and I couldn't call her. They even changed her cell phone to "emergency call" only. The nurse supervisor accused me of calling a dozen times a day and had to put a limit to my calls to just only one call per shift. When I told him I didn't had that much time to call a dozen times a day, he made me go through my phone log and told me they tracked all my daily calls. Is this normal? Have you heard of this? How many times can a family members call to talk to their love ones or to ask the nurse about the condition of their love ones? How about this? The social worker failed to do her job and because she had to be off the next day she tried to push my mom out for her own sake. She called to make threat me that if I didn't allow the ambulance to take my mother home that day Medicare was not going to pay and I have to pay for her hospital fee. The fact is, she failed to coordinate with the medical supply company to get a hospital bed into my house before the ambulance bring my mother home on a strecher. When I told her that would not be safe, she called me "disrespectful" because I don't listen to her. She threat me and challenge me to call Medicare. I did. In four hours she called back and said we need to wait for the hospital bed before mom can be home but she will be out the next day and her coworker will help me. What a mess at the United Hospital. With this experience, I have decided that, when I am old I will not go to any hospital because I am Asian and old. These people scared me. There terrible experience we got here is opposite to the mission statement of the United Hospital on their page. The saddest part is that on the last two days I didn't go see my mother at all because I don't want to see any of the nursing staff there. They all looked at me like I am an "eyesore." read more

Wouldn't wish this place on a dead dog. I was sent there by another hospital to see a cardiac specialist and got nothing but a pat on the head, double talk and a lot of run around. I arrived by ambulance at 5:00 am and didn't see the cardiac guy until a full day later and only because I raised the roof about not seeing him. Even so, he had no plan in place, and "maybe" would do some tests the following day. I said there would be no tomorrow because I was leaving if I couldn't get what I came for done that day. Lots of people came out of the woodwork to do things as a last ditch attempt for more billing, but there was nothing that explains why it took them a whole day to even acknowledge I was there. The biggest joke was when they wanted me to sign a form saying I was refusing treatment. I couldn't refuse anything because I wasn't offered anything and couldn't get a straight answer for when anything would be offered. I made sure I wrote that on the form. It's also a teaching hospital, so the other 10-12 people who were in and out of my room for various things had various levels of competencies and never had the same story twice about what was or wasn't happening. read more

Brought husband to the ER at recommendation from his PCP. There was a guy in the waiting room in excruciating pain, he told the staff he had been there for 6 1/2 hours without someone even looking at him. It took over 3 hours to get back to a room to even be seen. My husband was admitted and it took another couple hours to get him up to a room. The doctor is taking his sweet time making his rounds. Was told he would see a dr by 10 am and it's almost 2 pm now. Had to get the patient care rep in order to get an answer from the dr who said he would be in within the hour. We will see. Husband hadn't eaten in over 24 hours and the staff was shocked that items off the liquid diet list wasn't sufficient. He was told that the dr was concerned about throat swelling, but after he started complaining they were able to miraculously change his diet to unrestricted. Never coming back to this hospital again. read more

I was in the United Hospital almost 2 weeks ago now. I want to say that I had a pretty good experience considering with the E/R crew. Chelsey was very nice and helpful. Dr. Connely was very thorough. I also had a very good nurse on Sunday when I was checked out. Thank You to the helpful crew. read more

Updating this ticket to let you all know what kind of horrible leeches they are. I was reached out to, not publicly, but in private, by one of their people, and she said that she would look into this issue further for me and get to the bottom of this. (What a joke, as if they'd keep record of any of the blatant lies they told me). I was very frank with her, and I told her that she can either void the bill because of their error in ensuring me of coverage, and for telling me I was on a hold without one ever being placed, or take me to court. Did either of those things happen? No. They refinanced it, sent it to insurance again in order to create a new bill, and handed that bill to yet another debt collector who is now hassling me. Im now receiving a fresh, unacceptable bill, for an amount that I am not going to pay, for services that I was tricked into thinking we're not optional over five years ago. Stay far far away from this establishment, and never trust anything that any of their providers, admissions staff, and now owners tell you. This hospital will openly lie to you to take your money even if your insurance doesn't cover them, and they will send debt collectors after suicidal patients to get the money. Literal devils. Sue me, United. You won't see a dime out of me otherwise, and placing stress and credit damage on a suicidal patient is accomplishing nothing for you. read more

I was in United hospital from January 24 to February 6. I was on three floors, had 2 surgeries, 2 litters of blood, and needed personal care at times. My post surgery time was in the 2400 unit. All of the staff - housekeepers, food tray deliverers, doctors, R.N., other nurses & aids - were both compassionate and professional in their care of me. They freely answered and invited questions. They are a blessing to patients and a credit to United Hospital. Do not over work them!!! However, on two floors, when I tried to take a shower, the shower heads needed repair, making it difficult to shower. The shower heads would not stay where they were moved - so they sprayed the wall rather than who ever was showering. The aid had to hold the shower head in order for me to get wet so I could bath!!! ASAP Tighten the set screws on the shower heads or get commercial shower heads that can take repeated use, adjustment & stay where they are adjusted. Also, next time you renovate or build patient rooms, ask the nurses for their input, first!. Then put in all the electronic equipment required or that might be used into the suggested space before determining room size. And, put banks of electrical outlets, rather than spreading them the length of the wall. Outlets behind the bed are very hard for Nurses or aids to reach. Set some cameras up to record how the electronic & other equipment is moved about in order for patient daily functions & nursing to take place in the room. In my case, additional electronic equipment was brought in, and I had a 4 wheeled folding walker for mobility, and 2 flower/plants. Lastly, the United Hospital ER space needs to be overhauled!!! It is very confusing. Three big counters without large clear signs. Poor signage as to where the restroom was. I had to pass through an area where there were lots of adults & children sneezing, coughing & snuffing in order to get to it!!!. Another route or a second restroom at the other end of the space would have been appreciated. I suggest you subdivide folks by condition and ask them to sit is specific sections of the ER space, with glass partitions. Some quiet soothing music would have been nice, too. My baby was delivered safe and loud and I was provided with the gentle care of Dr. Dennis Hartung and the many nurses of L&D and the Birth Center. First off, I don't like hospitals to begin with. My birth began at a free standing birth center with a big jacuzzi tub just waiting for me and my baby. I was admitted to United because my birth was not progressing and we followed Dr. Hartung. The rooms in both L&D and the birth center are VERY small. Upon arrival I was hooked up to an IV stand with Pitocin and monitors so pushing that thing around my bed to get to the bathroom every few minutes was hellish! My lovely doula explained to a nurse that I wanted to at least labor in the tub and asked if there was one available. The nurse brought us to a bathroom in the recovery room right off the nurse's station. My doula set up her fake candles but my big contracting belly just wasn't feeling the cramped bathtub across from a toilet. The nurses were all so helpful and friendly in L&D. No complaints there. The nurses in the birth center were also mostly helpful and friendly except for a couple on my last few hours at the hospital. One nurse kept leaving the computer in my room open (while all the other nurses put it away on the wall where it belonged after they entered my stats). When it was opened it was directly in the way of the bathroom door. She made a big fuss out of it when I asked her to put it away. She also would come in and wake my baby to listen to her heartbeat then complain that she couldn't hear it over the crying. The nurse moved my bed up and down while I was laying in it without my consent. She moved pillows all over me without my consent... and even when I objected! What a crazy! She also wanted to take my baby to the nursery so they could give her a pacifier. WHAT?! No no no, my baby stays with me on the boob. THEN a custodian came into the room. I had two trash cans total. One in the bathroom and the other in the main room. She took 15 MINUTES to change these bags! I just had to stand there holding my baby watching her whip a bag in the air so it would open. Rumor has it the birth center is getting updated next year. Larger rooms are a must. My poor husband had to sleep in the cramped fold out chair in the "corner", AKA 4 feet of open space in the room. Having visitors was a claustrophobic nightmare. And I swear there was a knock on the door every 15 minutes whether it was a nurse to take my blood pressure or a staff member asking for my food tray or a photographer. I just gave birth! Let the woman rest!!! read more

Horrible experience. Staff is unprofessional and rude!!! Was there for 3 nights never offered me a shower or changed my bedding.!!!! I was there for pain management and the nurses acted like it was a burden to give me my meds. Would NEVER go back!!@ read more

This is both a review of the Birth Center and the inpatient hospital, as I've had the luck(?) of staying in both recently. We'll start with the birth center: Let's just say it- the place could use some updating. Staff say there are rumors of an update in the works- so hopefully that can happen soon. The place is clean, and has the appropriate equipment and technology, it just looks a bit small and shabby when compared with other birth centers (Specifically Woodwinds and Abbott-the other 2 that I've toured.) However, United is reasonably close to my house, my doctors are all affiliated with Allina, and they have a great NICU run by Children's just a few feet down the hall- the NICU was especially important to me since I was having twins, which are always high risk. Environment aside, the care is outstanding! Each person introduced themselves, explained exactly what they were going to do, and made sure to answer my questions. I had a c-section, and everyone in the OR outdid themselves in making sure I was comfortable and informed. Once we got over to the postpartum area, the great care continued. The nurses were so helpful in taking care of me, my husband and our two little boys. They made sure we were kept up to date with the medical stuff and also made sure we had what we needed to be comfortable and take care of our kiddos. Now, the inpatient side: Went in through the emergency room- unfortunately can't tell you much about the ER as I don't remember much, but I do know that they were able to see me quickly, make a diagnosis, rule out a few other things, and get me up to a room within a couple hours. I went up to the 4th floor. The room was large, recently remodeled, and had a nice bathroom, but no shower. The great care that I'd come to expect from my stay in the birth center continued. Every nurse, nursing assistant, doctor, housekeeping, dietary, lab, etc staff that I encountered was so kind. I'd never hesitate to go back for any medical need! But I might have a family member or friend bring some take-out; the food isn't bad, only a little bland and the menu (although pretty large) does not change from day to day. Since my two recent stays ended up being a week long, combined, I got kind of bored with the menu. read more
