I became involved with the Prison Entrepreneurship Program after reading a b-school friends blog…read moreentry of his experience with the program working as an Executive Mentor. I was moved by the concept of providing inmates the means to view their release from prison as a true second chance and a way to positively re-enter society. As the program explains, two-thirds of released inmates will return to prison within three years. However, those inmates that graduate from this program have a recidivism rate below three percent. From those numbers it is clear that PEP changes people's lives for the better. These statistics are more easily understood when one attempts to take a look at the world from an inmates' point of view. Most everyone in the outside world understands that these men committed terrible crimes and deserved to be punished. Yet much fewer probably realize how very scary it is for the inmates to leave prison and re-enter society. Inmates are released with the clothes on their backs, up to $100, a bus ticket and a criminal record. In reality, these men will be repeatedly rejected from their families, potential employers, public housing facilities and even churches. They face a difficult road. PEP provides these men a real opportunity to reintegrate them back into society and to never return to prison. For many of these men, graduating from this program is the greatest accomplishment of their lives. I have worked with PEP as an Executive Mentor over the last two programs. My duties in this role aren't many, mainly they are to revise an inmates' business plan, resume and personal statement as well as perform some online research for his business idea. All told I have done less than 15 hours of work each time, so it is not a huge time commitment. There are many optional events one can participate in also but usually they require you to be in the Dallas- Fort Worth area and I have been unable able to participate so far. I believe this is a worthwhile program which I plan to continue to work with and I would recommend to anyone to join in. However lately the moral…read moreseems down or maybe they just have employees who are providing poor customer service, but I've gotten where I dislike this location but still come here because they carry the best variety of stamps, opened longer than my local office and this is gonna sound horrible, the customer service here is still better than my local post office. On this evening, I overheard one employee talking to a customer in a very snarky tone. Yes I realize that times have changed however you don't have to make someone feel little by saying things to make them feel stupid. Another lady asked a question and was told that she would need to Google the answer to that. I hope I've just come at a bad time (although it was NOT busy, there were three employees and like four/five customers) and that this isn't the norm to be expected.

While it was empty inside when I stopped by on Friday evening, it was still a little unprofessional for the employee to be on a phone call during my entire transaction (before I got there, during and after I left was the same continuous phone conversation)

The cops in Highland Park are seriously the worse. They…read morepull you over for no reason of course. Looking for all the citations you break, Earning you multiple tickets, oh great! They are usually older, out of shape and a bother. Probably miserable, poor husbands and fathers. They have no problem being rude to innocent civilians, They pass out tickets in hundreds of millions. I've been pulled over wrongly twice now this year, Without a simple "I'm sorry" or "my bad", how weird?! So I may or may not have been in this building thrice times, This has been the easiest review to have rhymed.

If you ever get a ticket in Highland Park and want to pay it, for the love of all that is holy,…read moredon't do it online. Take the time to show up in person and pay with a check. Here's why: ~You'll be charged $6 for the online convenience. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Wrong. Read on. ~Your credit card will be charged multiple times. If you were foolish enough to use a debit card, you'll have multiple charges coming out of your bank account until you can get the mess straightened out. ~You now have to chase the money that is owed back to you. How long will that take? I have no clue as I've only begun the chase. I have to wait for the charges to actually clear my bank account then take a printout to the court proving that I was charged multiple times. Then they'll cut me a check. *blink* I'm thinking if I have this cleared up in a month it'll be a miracle. Take it from me, if you wish to be a law abiding citizen in Highland Park, make it as easy on yourself as possible. Pay your ticket in person, with a check (leave a paper trail). Then I'd suggest keeping a record of your payment in your car for a couple of years. If they can't even process a simple online payment, who's to say they'll be able to record your payment properly and won't issue a warrant? Way to go, Highland Park. Even Dallas has you beat on this one.

I lost despite the fact that I presented clear evidence that my appraisal was inaccurate. What bothers me is that the panel was unprofessional and rude. They had their mind made up in the first few seconds, without considering my evidence. I presented a comp from a house on my street. Similar to ours, it was a new build in the same year and sold in the same year. It is on the same street, one block down. That house is 1,000 sq feet larger than ours but has an appraisal from DCAD that is $100,000 less. How is it possible? The smaller house has a higher appraisal. The panel dismissed this comp and started talking about houses on streets I never heard of rather than considering the relevant comp on the same street. The ideal comp is from a house on your own street. For the panel to dismiss this comp is beyond belief. The panel appeared angry that I protested last year. Well, DCAD valued my house at more than the purchase price, so I would have been a fool not to protest. I won last year. It is my legal right to protest every single year if I so choose and do so without prejudice against me. This was not done. I don't know who the panel members are. If they are DCAD employees then that is a conflict of interest. If they are someone else, they need to find people who can act professionally and who understand how comparables work. This entire episode leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. The process is corrupt, rigged, and unfair.
