This is a segregation era cemetery that is believed to date to the 1950's. In 1957 is was platted…read moreby Brockway, Weber & Brockway, Engineers, of West Palm Beach. The City Commission asked the African-American community for input in naming the cemetery and they chose to name it after Sara Sims (1863-1958), a community activist who helped found the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in 1908. She is buried in this cemetery. The first recorded burial took place in 1958. This cemetery contains a mosiac grave marker which is an example of folk art. It is the only one in the city. The City of Boynton Beach designated this land as a cemetery in the early 1970's. It is a stop on the Historic Cemetery Trail. There is an interpretive sign posted explaining the history of the site. Few grave markers exist because many of the people buried here were indigent residents of Palm Beach County between 1988 and 1994. There aren't complete records of who is buried here. The last burial took place in 2004. When the city redeveloped Sara Sima Park next door in 2010 they also fixed up the cemetery and installed a new fence. It is nice to see that they city took care of this cemetery that is important to this community.

The Raulerson House is the oldest standing home in Boca Raton. It is a Boca Raton designated…read morehistoric site. The two story home is 1,911 square feet and it was built in 1905. It used to sit on Palmetto Park Blvd where a shopping center now sits and it was moved to it's current location. The house is named for Boca pioneers Bert and Annie Raulerson who came to the area in 1903. They built the home and grew oranges and worked in a fruit packing house. When they constructed the house a lot of windows added to keep it cool since there was no air conditioning. The house also sits on pilings to keep air moving underneath it and to prevent rot. Wood used to build homes in this time period were pecky cypress and Dade county pine. Another nice feature of the home is a beautiful front porch. Diane DeMarco restored it when she was the owner. Diane has served as president of the Delray Beach Historical Preservation Board and as a member of the Boca Raton Historical Preservation Board. In 2010 the Boca Raton children's museum had hoped to acquire the house from its owner Robert Muller to add next to their other historic buildings, Singing Pines and the Arvida Cottage. The deal fell through and the museum ended up building a replica of Boca Raton's oldest home, Thomas Moore Rickards house instead. This home is privately owned so you can not tour the inside but it is part of the tour on the geotourist app put together by the Boca Raton Historical Society.

I am one of those people who ends up dropping off my mail-in ballot at this main office of the…read moreSupervisor of Elections on Election Day by 7pm rather than in-person voting, and I've been doing this for years. In non-Presidential elections, there is sometimes a small line of people waiting outside of the office to drop off their ballot, but I've always found open parking spaces in front of the office. I actually give the ballot to a live person, thus it is not just dropping in a box or something. This year, the massive turnout meant this office was nicely organized to expect extra people. Signs telling me where to drive into were on nearly every corner around the building, and they had setup a convenient drive-through drop off station, with orange cones and more signs inside the parking lot, and 2 lanes with people on both lanes collecting ballots. I still got my 'I Voted' sticker! Good thing I had already filled out, sealed and signed my ballot ahead of time, because there was zero space to park and do this in the parking lot (not that I would ever do this, of course...)! All in all, I was impressed with the Supervisor's organization. Thanks for providing an easy, clear to understand, functional voting experience for me and my family.

The marker is next to a bus stop and reads, "Recorded in 1923, Del-Ida Park was one of Delray Beach's earliest planned neighborhoods. Del-Ida Park's unusual diagonal arrangement of streets, triangular lots, and public parks are unique when contrasted with the grid pattern layout of the remainder of the city. This imaginative street layout was designed to create a sense of space and maintain a park-like atmosphere. Architectural styles throughout the neighborhood reflect the popular culture of South Florida and the land boom and bust that occurred during the initial development of the 1920s through to the 1940s. Although dominated by the Mediterranean and Mission Revival styles, Minimal Traditional and Frame Vernacular styles are also prevalent and provide a predominantly one-story, low-scale streetscape. Additional development of the 1950s and 1960s provide prime examples of the Ranch and Contemporary styles typical of South Florida. Del-Ida Park lies between NE 4th and 8th Streets with North Swinton Avenue to the west and the Florida East Coast Railroad to the east. The City of Delray Beach locally designated the Del-Ida Park Historic District in 1988." The Del-Ida Park Historic District is the first subdivision created in Delray Beach. It was plated…read morein 1923 during the Florida land boom. It is 58 acres and the neighborhood boundary streets are Northeast Fourth St., Northeast Eighth St., North Swinton Ave., and Northeast Third Ave. There are 151 structures in the district. Houses in the neighborhood are from the 1920's. Architecture styles are Spanish Mission, craftsman bungalow, and the ornate Mediterranean Revival. There are also wood frame houses built in the 1930's and 1940's. An interesting feature that is unique to this neighborhood is the streets are on the diagonal creating triangular blocks. The community has three triangular shaped parks. The residents of this community are interested in preserving their historic homes. The district hopes to build off the momentum of the restoration of Old School Square and the Pineapple Grove Arts district. Committees have been created to improve landscaping and safety and to maintain the architectural details that make this historic district unique. This neighborhood was once advertised as "new blood for Delray" and residents hope to preserve the historic buildings that once made this the premier place to live in Delray Beach.

Although called a park it is not of a park in the traditional sense, it's a historical park. The…read morepark is located on the site where the first school was built in 1895, School No. 4 Colored. The African American citizens of Linton which was later changed it's name to Delray in 1901, petitioned for a school and teacher in 1894. In order to have their needs met officials required the community to supply a school building and to maintain the canal in a clean condition for the teacher to be able to travel. The school opened in a thatched hut on the east side of NW 5th Avenue, south of NW 1st Street. In 1907 the hut was replaced by a one room wooden school house which would later become Spady Elementary and Carver High Schools. BF James was a minister and the schools first principal. Frances Jane Bright was a teacher at the school. There is an educational display in the park that honors the history of this landmark. It provides historical background on Delray Beach. There is also a parking lot so that you can leave your vehicle while you tour historic 5th St. Across the street from the park is Donnies Place, a soul food restaurant and up the street is the Spady cultural museum.

You have to register for a tour, and they are only given at certain times... it's really well worth it if you have an interest in our elections in Florida. It's really well organized and very professional. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
