The Montgomery Library System as a whole is pretty great and this branch in particular is amazing…read more It is a small library but they have a good selection of books, audiobooks, magazines, and movies. The staff is very helpful as well and anything that can't be found here can be reserved remotely at another branch. Not to mention the beautiful pond and trail outside of the library.

I recently moved to Texas to be closer to my parents and to start work being that I am graduating in June. I'm using the library as my second place of residence for the next 6 weeks so I can before for my board exams. The library is very new and is stock full of great books, magazines, movies, computers, and lots of comfy chairs and tables to use. There is plenty of help if you can't find what your looking for and there is a great section for children. Each day there are different classes you can take from computer 101 to art classes. My favorite part of the library is the view of Memory Lake. Memory Lake has been built in remembrance of loved ones who have since passed away. There are many flowers, trees, benches, and walkways dedicated to these special people who are now in Heaven. The wild life and habitats throughout the lake make this a great place to walk your dog, take your children for walks, and to learn about all the different animals, plants, and trees that make up the area. Each day I take my lunch break from studying to explore a new section. I would recommend stopping by here to check out a DVD, catch up on the morning paper and to take a stroll around the lake.

Welcome to The Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park…read more It is widely believed that Montgomery County is the birthplace of the Lone Star flag and this Park commemorates this very fact. On a lighter note, it commemorates my 500th review as well. It is like an extension of the Public Library and so it has plenty parking, and no gates, so open 7 days a week. There is a beautiful garden under construction. It was a really hot day so did not stroll the park or the other side where there were more flags, likely with more stories, just stuck to the main area. There are flags all around the main monument with elaborate details about the origin of the specific flag, when and where it was used, who created it etc. It made a pretty interesting read, even in the hot sun. If you are a history buff, or just want to know the roots of the Texas flag, this is the place to be. Its very neatly maintained. Like I mentioned before, when the park is fully done, it will be a much more appealing place to visit and maybe even rest under the trees while you contemplate. I did not check if it was a sunrise or sunset point, but this thought kept popping in my head, that with the sun in the background, it will make a great photo for every patriotic veteran. To me, who hardly has any connection to the war stories of this country, it was an interesting read. I can only imagine how much impact it would have on someone to whom all this really matters. Today, the 4th of July, am sure there is some independence day related event happening there.

The marker reads, "Legislated after the close of the Civil War, the Texas Constitution of 1866 provided for a public school system supported by funds derived from property taxes; monies collected from African Americans would go to schools for their children. Although the law continued to change during the next decades, the primary providers of African American education were the Freedmen's Bureau, churches, missionary associations and philanthropists." "Samuel W. Houston (1864-1945) was born in Huntsville to Joshua and Sylvester Houston. His father was a slave and personal bodyguard of former Texas President Sam Houston. His family believed strongly in education, and he earned degrees from the Hampton Institute in Virginia, Atlanta University in Georgia and Howard University in Washington, D.C. He returned to Huntsville in 1900 and established a newspaper. He then taught in Grimes County and at the Huntsville Community School before establishing a school circa 1906 near here in what was the Galilee community." "The Sam Houston Industrial and Training School began in the Galilee Methodist Church, which Houston rented for the classes. He soon added teachers and programs, offering vocational curriculum as well as the arts and humanities. Trustees built the first schoolhouse in 1914 and continued to add facilities, including dormitories and workshops." "By 1930, the school served hundreds of students from around the state. That year, the Sam Houston school merged into the Huntsville Colored School, which became Sam Houston High School. It closed in 1968 due to integration. Unique to entire Texas, there are supposed to be 13 benches in the Downtown area, as a free,…read moreoutdoorsy, functional, and when viewed in unification- a piece of chronological history . These artsy benches called, " Art you can sit on, and history you can reflect on" I was really curious, with a wide rim hat on my head, pinning down in my notes of all the places where the benches are located, I roamed around the almost empty downtown on a Sunday afternoon. Did I find all...no, ....did I love the ones I found, yes, .....would I sit on it....absolutely not, it was blazing hot and a lot of these benches are under direct sun ! Actually a lot of them, I passed right across and went in circles because they have been painted over to preserve them. So the art from a prominent local artist, as recently as 2009, is not all available anymore, almost unrecognizable in some places. Its just on the side of the road, for everyone to enjoy.
