So much for the laid back vibe in Islamorada, FL! Apparently the employees at the Islamorada post…read moreoffice need a nap. Today I had the extremely unpleasant experience of visiting the Islamorada, Florida post office to renew my two young children's passports. (As my children both already had passports, I am calling it a renewal, though I completely understand that they treat it as a new passport application when the children are under sixteen.) After calling the two local post offices in the area that offer passport services the previous few days, and only getting a phone that just rings and rings with no answer, I decided to follow the instructions on the Islamorada post office website which stated that they offer walk-in passport applications from 3-4 pm Tuesday through Thursday. I then shuttled my whole family, husband and young kids, straight out of school, and arrived at circa 3:20 pm on 1/14/2025. Upon arrival at the post office, an employee met us in the front, and though he looked like he was just waking up from a nap, and did not seem to know that the website advertised walk-in appointments, he wasn't unpleasant. He went in the back to get a woman to assist me. A woman appeared and I informed her that I was there to renew my young children's passports. The woman snarkily responded that I cannot renew a child's passport, then barked at me asking if I had the forms filled out. I supplied everything needed, along with both children's passports. The woman then pulled out my son's birth certificate and said that it wasn't the original. I explained that the birth certificate was the one I received back from when I applied for his original passport, which was issued with no problem. Angry woman behind the counter then said, "She's a snippy one, isn't she?" Then another very disheveled man came out of the back and sneered at me, asking "Who sent that back to you?" as if I was a mentally deranged person. Then he proceeded to explain that they would have only sent me back what I had sent to them. I explained that when I applied for my son's first passport, we were in California, and that is what the U.S. State Department sent back to the Los Angeles processing center. Let me remind you here- the birth certificate was perfectly acceptable for my son's first passport application, and he has a passport issued based on this very same birth certificate. I then mentioned that I have worked for the U.S. government, so this is not my first rodeo, trying to lighten up the absurd situation in which I had suddenly found myself. The man then sneered angrily "If you know people in the State Department, then why don't you just call them to renew it?" I could feel his pure disgust for me practically coming off of his skin. Meanwhile the miserable woman behind the counter commented sarcastically, "We all know people in high places, don't we?" Completely baffled by this intense bitterness that I had somehow triggered by simply applying to renew my children's passports, I continued to hand over the paperwork needed to the angry woman, and she would then thrust the paperwork back at me and bark orders as to where to sign, rolling her eyes the entire time. My eleven-year-old son even noticed that she was rolling her eyes at me. Meanwhile, disheveled-management-guy skulked off to the back office again. You would have thought I was a child trafficker, the way I was treated. Actually, they probably treat child traffickers and shady people better than they treated me and my family. I went to the post office today to complete a bureaucratic paperwork exercise, of which I am very familiar. I did not deserve to be derided and disrespected. At the least, these two employees at the Islamorada, FL post office located at 82801 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, FL perhaps need to take a class or two in customer service. As someone who has served my country, these postal service workers may need to learn what 'service' means. We all have bad days, but this was completely uncalled for. I can honestly say that I have never been treated so badly or with so much disrespect, disdain and disgust than I was at the Islamorada, FL post office. This is unacceptable.

"A third party may apply for the child's passport with a Form DS-3053: "Statement of Consent" or a notarized statement from both parents/guardians giving that third party permission to apply for the child. The statement must include a photocopy of the parents/guardians' identification. When the statement is from only one parent/guardian, the third party must present evidence of sole custody of the consenting parent/guardian." I DID ALL THIS ^^^^ and the workers would not let me complete the application. Shame on them. From the get-go I was told that the passport agent was getting ready to leave. Did he not know he had an appointment? I drove 24 miles to the post office to complete this today. Then I was asked if I was the guardian. I explained how we followed all the directions on the government website. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/under-16.html They just didn't want to work. To start, this was my third attempt to return the package due to the store not being open during its posted hours, which aligns with what many others have already pointed out in publicly available reviews. Based on how I was treated, I can also understand why multiple reviewers have raised concerns about the way customers are treated here. If you want additional context, you can search the store on Google and review the lower-rated feedback, including the 1-star reviews, to see how others describe their experiences. While I was in line, the owner came out and started complaining to her employee because they were having trouble scanning the package for the customer ahead of me. The tone and attitude were already clear before I even got to the counter. When it was my turn, I said hello, placed my package on the scale, and showed her the Amazon return QR code on my phone. The item was in the same unopened box it came in. As she was putting the label on it, she started insisting it was not the original box and complaining that the original box was required. I told her it was the original box and that this was my third attempt to return it because the store had been closed during posted hours. She then used her back pain as an excuse for why the store is frequently closed during business hours. She then told me that if I didn't like her service, I could drive to Marathon to return my package. I took that to mean that if I didn't accept the way I was being spoken to and the claims about the packaging, she would refuse the return and make the situation more difficult than it needed to be. The interaction felt controlling and completely inappropriate for a basic Amazon return. At that point, I made it very clear how I felt about her and the way I was treated as I was leaving the store. I then contacted UPS support to file a complaint. The representative asked for her name, but since she was not wearing a name tag, I had no way of knowing it. I asked if they needed the name, and they told me it was up to me but that it would help, so I went back into the store to get it. When I went back in and asked for her name, she refused and then said she would call the police on me for trespassing, even though I was following the instructions given to me by UPS support. Between the repeated issues with the store being closed during posted hours, the behavior I experienced during this interaction, and being threatened with the police when trying to follow instructions from customer support, this was completely unacceptable.
