I hired Universal twice in the last year. I found Jonathon (JD) a pleasure to work with. He was very responsive and communicated frequently regarding his arrival time on the days of the installations. I needed to raise the opener on one side of my garage to accommodate a car lift installation. I was told by one of his competitors, that it couldn't be done with the existing opener, but JD figured it out and saved me a big expense. It wasn't as easy as he expected , and he ended up spending extra time to get it done over two days. I had to tell him in the evening to go home to his family. This was hands down the worst experience I've ever had with a contractor. Jonathon was hired to install a 3x3 piece of shower glass. He requested 50% cash up front. After he got my venmo transfer he disappeared. He couldn't be reached by his work text or email. Finally after two months he shows up to install the glass. The glass was the wrong size. The first thing he says is "it's not my fault". He then asked if I could change the dimension of my wall. I'm not kidding. And to top it all off...Jonathon proceeds to break a piece of tile with the glass as he's trying to adjust it. I fired Jonathon on the spot and asked for a refund. As expected this was a train wreck as well. I should have done more homework. I was in a rush to get this done and he was the first guy to call me back. Did a check on the BBB afterwards and he is not licensed. Avoid using this business. First, the good: Jonathan was very friendly, and did a great job with installation. He was polite and left everything clean. The quote was reasonable, as far as I can tell. The main problem was communication. Our first appointment, I got a call the day before, they thought it was that day. No biggie. He arrived within the window on the right day, though it was right at the end. I was asked to put down a 50% deposit that day- only cash, or venmo I believe. I was disappointed I couldn't pay with credit card. I was told I'd be contacted within 7 days. 15 days later I still hadn't heard from anyone, so I messaged and got a text back, scheduling the installation for 8 days later (23 days after the initial meeting). I was not given a time. That afternoon I texted to see what time I could expect them, as I had been waiting at home all day. The response was that they wouldn't be able to make it out that day. They rescheduled for 2 days later in the afternoon. I asked for an eta, but did not get a response. I got a text the promised afternoon saying that the glass pane had broken while loading it. They reordered it rushed and would be by one week later to install it. He graciously offered a discount, which was nice. He did not give me a time or day (I said I was available both Fri and sat). I texted again the next Fri afternoon to ask when they would be out to install it. The response was that it was delayed and wouldn't be ready until Tues, he would be out on weds to install. He did not respond when I asked for a time. Weds morning I texted again, was given a time. He showed up a little late, but got it installed, and did a great job. It was done 5 weeks after the initial meeting. So, if you aren't worried about time or communication, I recommend them. Unfortunately, it caused me a great deal of stress, wasted several days of time waiting around, and was done way later that I needed it, so my rating reflects that. read more

I needed a repair to my garage door track and contacted Universal Door & Gate on Yelp - it was all of 13 minutes until I received a response from Jonathan with available appointment times! The available slots were fairly quick and I was able to schedule a technician to come out right away. The tech was personable and professional; after looking over the issue, he explained my options clearly and what was involved. He repaired the broken track bracket plate and re-secured it with additional fasteners and checked out the entire door cables and operation to make sure everything operates smoothly. JD is nice. He is a hard worker.... when he actually kept his own appointments. I should have done my homework and researched this company who is not even licensed since November of 2016. In June of 2021 I hired JD to fix a solar-powered gate that had stopped opening/closing. JD replaced parts on the gate, replaced the chain and installed a "new" motor/unit and solar panel. The gate worked fine and opened automatically (yay!) for two months before it stopped working (BOO!). To this date i have not been able to get JD to return my calls, texts or emails. I asked JD for the warranty information on the unit/motor. He has not provided me any information on the unit/motor. I can't even contact the manufacturer as I have NO information on the unit/motor. It's probably not even a new unit is why. How would I even know?? I'm embarrassed to say this has been ongoing for 7 months. JD/Universal Door and Gate is unreliable, unprofessional, makes excuse after excuse (oh, the excuses), no call/no-show to appointments he sets. I paid JD a deposit and the balance. I have used Jonathan multiple times for all kinds of projects and installations and just generally to "fix things" as he is an extremely multi-talented, capable and resourceful guy. I know first-hand that his knowledge of windows, doors, sliding glass doors and garage doors is second to none as I have used him for ALL of these things in my house. I know he also does other much bigger, more commercial-type jobs along these lines... and much more...as the owner of Universal Door & Gate, and I'm quite sure he must be just as skilled at all of that because this guy knows what he's doing. Not only has Jonathan worked on, fixed or installed all kinds of the above-mentioned items for me, he is also a VERY skilled carpenter. I found THAT out when he began to work on my very old and frankly crickety big huge mahogany dining room table I inherited from my grandmother, and also when he told me what he could do to fix a failing leg on the also- inherited old and HEAVY mahogany Steinway piano. Fixing both the table and the piano leg would be a challenge to anyone, believe me, but Jonathan is so good at working with WOOD especially that even these two challenging jobs are literally just "kid-stuff" to him. "No problem"...and he does this stuff with EASE... just like anything else he works on. And also Jonathan is very SMART....did I mention that yet? I couldn't believe at first how he figured out how to "deal with" some of the quite old and finicky big windows in my house which needed BIGTIME work. I think it also helps a lot that Jonathan is big and strong enough to even physically DEAL with big windows/sliding glass doors like that. Anybody else I called tried to force me into buying new windows, which frankly a lot of people including myself just can't afford at the moment. Jonathan has amazing "old time" skills which he applies to fixing big windows etc....(and I THINK he learned some of these types of skills from his father who he inherited the business from). I really don't think there is anything Jonathan can't fix or install around the house!!..... as one day late in our acquaintance he just happened to mention to me that he has a bunch of plumbing and electrical experience also. Lol. And of course Jonathan is also extremely pleasant to deal with.. or I wouldn't even hire him.....and also interesting and fun to talk to. I think the only little flaw I can think of is that he gets BUSY...and he can be a little absent-minded because of this....but that's IT. I hired UD&G in April of 2022. Jonathan Somogyi (owner) came to my residence and gave me an estimate to build and install a door in my basement. He required half down And balance upon completion. I was good with that, he was very professional and knowledgeable about doing the job on time & on budget. I paid him 50% down. Two months go by without hearing from him. I called & he was very responsive and told me when he would be out to start the framing. He did come out a couple time and do some work. It is now August and I have been able to reach him. I went to the address that is listed on the invoice and it is a UPS store with rented mailboxes. I have left him several messages telling him that I would like to have the door and I will pay him for some of the framing that he did and have not received any calls back. At this point I would like to have my job completed or get the door that I paid for and have somebody else install it. Absolutely terrible! No one in Tucson should be doing business with this atrocious company. This is probably the worst business I've seen in my 18 years here. Through Universal, we hired an unlicensed contractor, Jonathan, to install a sliding glass with two sunlights along the side. That was on June 4th. It's August 24th now and the job is still unfinished. And to be honest, it looks awful. The wood is unfinished. There are cracks that you can see through all over. He installed plexiglass as the sunlights despite the law requiring them to use tempered glass. The door isn't even installed the way we requested. Additionally, the company cannot seem to keep a single scheduled installation appointment. On one occasion Jonathan (who apparently works alone) was here working until 11:30 at night! Who does that?! So this must just be a side gig for him. My wife and I have taken countless days off of work and scheduled child care and doggie daycare just to learn (on the day of) that Jonathan won't be able to make it...yet again. It's incredibly disrespectful, inconsiderate, and unprofessional. In fact, since we hired him more than 2.5 months ago Universal Door and Gate has not made our project a priority for even a single day. In my view, Universal Door and Gate is a universal scam. Universally trashy products. Universally poor customer service. Universally unprofessional. We regret paying them the remaining sum of money (totalling $4,000) and now they won't even return a call. To make matters worse they've taken the original estimate and won't give us another one. We are trying desperately to be reimbursed to hire another company to do a decent job. At this point, we won't even give them another chance to fix this. There are other ways to waste your money. No need to also waste your time with Universal Door and Gate. read more

My garage didn't go up all the way and the roof rack on my truck caught on it and pulled the door off it's track and bent it. I got a handful of quotes for it, but Jonathan's was the best of the bunch on both cost and timeline. As in, he quoted me at 8PM on a Tuesday and my door was repaired by 10PM. There was still some cosmetic damage to the door, but from a distance, it's tough to notice and the garage actually opens and closes now. He was also willing to replace the individual panel should I choose to later, but honestly, I barely notice the damage.
