University City Beverage - Beer distributor - Beer, Wine & Spirits Near Me - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is a controlled state, thus the alcohol is sold by "state stores." To complicate matters, one can (pretty much) only purchase beer from beer distributors. And even then, only by the case. University City Beverage is a bare bones shop: concrete floor, palettes filled with cases of beer, a freezer with bags of ice and not much else. We were on the hunt for local beer; University had plenty to choose from. Buying beer four cases at a time must offer one a more senior air - I managed not to get carded! Perhaps the sweetest part of the buying experience at University City Beverage came at the end when the bloke near the door piled our brews and ice on a handtruck and hauled it out to the car. read more

Here every week! Offer different kinds of beers, ciders and some drinking accessories. Just a block away is a fine wine and spirits as well. There is parking on the street right in front. I always get the same beer, every weekend but the service is exception and the staff is always willing to help. They offer a lot of options and also have a large fridge where they will put some beer in the fridge. Kegs are available too. read more

Pretty nice selections with really sweet workers. Right in the perfect area to shop for a party- between the wine and spirits, grocery store, a pizza place, and this, this 2 block zone is ideal for living and getting anything you need. Plus it's open late, they know everything about everything in the store, and it's not too highly priced for the area, though not cheaper than a suburb. There is a cold section that's nice for when you need something cold and in your mouth ASAP. It's a small store front, but they do an alright job of packing it in right and showcasing all of the options. I never over think going to this store, because I always come out with either something new or something super strong, which is all I ever need. read more

I just had my first experience at University City Beverage (and buying beer in PA as well) and it was relatively pleasant. I thought that the store had a reasonable selection for the size, and the employees were very pleasant and helpful. My only negative about the store is that they did not have a wide selection of micro brews, but I suppose you can't have high expectations when the store is tiny. I saw lots of run of the mill beers, along with some higher-quality beers: Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA, Bell's Oberon, Magic Hat variety pack are a few. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I recommend the place. read more

I love this place, and I can't really figure out why. The selection was never great. The prices are fair. I guess I just like the old school feel inside, no bells and whistles. Equally, I like the fact that they keep cases of swill on ice in the back for your party-to-go. read more

It's a beer store. Nothing special, nothing fancy, just concrete floors and piled-up cases all around. So why does it get four stars? First off, they know their neighborhood and because of that there is always something cheap on ice. Let's face it, if you can't wait for your beer to chill at home you're going to be OK with drinking Natty Light. Second, the guys working here are awesome. I used to tend bar, so I could deal with hauling two cases at a time back to the Supreme parking lot. But when they not only offer you a dolly but are pretty insistent about helping you, they win serious bonus points. I could carry all that beer, that doesn't mean that I really wanted to. read more

Although parking can be a problem, a good place to stop if you need a few cases of beer for a party. Staff is very helpful and if you can get your car near the store they'll help bring the cases to your car. If you want single bottles or a non-standard selection of beers you'll need to go somewhere else (e.g., Local 44). read more

Neat place. Great location on the corner right across from the supermarket and a parking lot. Since I'm from out of state the whole alcohol situation is foreign to me. They card at the door, I was just looking for a 40 or wine or something. They only have big ass cases of beer, good selection, some cold. Cigs here too. The staff are really friendly and helpful cool dudes. Sent me next door to a pizza place for 40s, so extra helpful. I will come back here when I have some money to spend on stocking up on beer for my one person hardcore parties. Most stuff looked around $20, so uh I'm not sure how that stacks up, but thats more than Michigan. Plain old cement floor shell kinda cool vibe, little beer warehouse aww. read more

Excellent shrimp korma and chicken tikka marsala. Even the garlic naan was exceptional.

It's okay. Nice selection of beer, including microbrews and such. But watch out for the dates on the packages. They don't keep a fresh selection of beers. Most were close to expiring within a couple of months. It's a bit dark and bare floor. The two employees were okay. read more

UCB is the best. The Asian guy who owns it is great, they deliver as many cases as you want for a $7 flat fee, and the refrigerated Natty Light in the back is so clutch. The prices are a little bit higher than a bigger distributor, but the guys are cool and I live super close. Think I'll head there now, actually. read more

UCB has a great variety of bulk quantities of beer. You can also rent a keg for as low as $60 + $7 a week for the pump. Our pump was broken when we got it which should not have happened but when we brought it back they gave us a new one no problem. Most of the beer is pretty cheap quality and price so if you are a college kid, this is probably a good place for you. read more

Without going into a dissertation about how messed up the PA LCB is and how ass backward the Pennsylvania Liquor laws are I am just going to say UCB does everything it can with what it has been given. Lots of stuff on ice, a big selection and helpful staff. One guy knows me and my g/f so well he grabs a cases of twisted tea and a case of hoegaarden before we can get from the car to the door of the place. EDIT: Also they deliver now. $8 added on to your order for the fee and then they drop it off to you. Order $30 or $100 bucks worth of stuff and it is still $8 bucks. read more

More times than not, the cooler is broken or not stocked, so room temp beer it is. One time the bouncer insisted on photocopying my ID, at which point I should have just left. The selection for your frat house brews is fine, but otherwise it's worth a trip to someplace better. read more
