The ebikes were pedal assist not fully electric. No throttle. Our bike was pretty banged up and had various broken parts. We didn't get much education on how to use the bike. This review is in regard to road bike rentals at Unlimited Biking. I travel for work and sometimes rent road bikes to get training rides in while away. Based on Unlimited Biking's description of their road bike, which was in line with the price, I came to DC a day early to get a long ride in on the W&OD trail. I was told the bike would be a CAAD12 - a solid road bike and in-line with their pricing. Most road bike rentals are in the $100/day range for aluminum road bikes and $150 - $200 for carbon, so their price matched my expectations. When renting elsewhere, I've received a well-maintained bike from people who care about the quality of their rentals. This wasn't the case with Unlimited Biking. The bike was not a CAAD12, but rather a CAAD Optimo with poorly adjusted Claris componentry and terrible tires. It was the worst road bike I've ever received for that price and is actually no better than the hybrid bikes they also rent for $40. Charging $100 for the bike feels predatory. Still, I attempted my ride. The poor shifting adjustment meant some of the gears were unusable and the handlebars weren't quite straight. Ultimately, the poor quality of the bike lead me to abandon my ride an return the bike. Having packed helmet, pedals, shoes, computer, bottles, etc. as well as traveling to DC early, Unlimited Biking wasted a huge amount of my time and effort. I pointed all of this out to them via email with no response. My impression of Unlimited Biking is that they're a scuzzy company that relies on location and high volume. There aren't that many options for nicer road bike rentals in DC, but definitely try to look elsewhere. read more

We were due a refund which never came. We had an issue with the bike in the shop itself and didn't take it out at all. We were promised a refund which still hasn't come. For the refund the onus was on us to email their main office. The person managing the store was apparently only equipped to take our money and not return it. They should have checked whether their bike was in working condition before charging the customer. Or having charged and found they couldn't really give us a bike, they should have immediately returned the money. Instead they took the money, asked us to email them for it and still haven't returned it. read more

Bait and switch / dishonest / misrepresentation of services / non-accountable staff After showing up to check in ahead of our 10:30 AM tour time today, we were told what we booked is not what we would be receiving. When asked if we could receive what was represented on the websites, we were told no. No refund was offered - a classic bait-and-switch. On July 11, we booked the "Best of DC Electric Bike Tour" on the FatTireTours website for $79 each X 4. What was supposed to be a 3.5 hour tour, ended up being 2.5 hours. For this tour, the description says " Our electric bike tours operate in groups of a maximum of 8 people", however there were 14 people on our tour. The description indicates that we would be seeing the Library of Congress, Supreme Court, Union Station, The Jefferson Memorial, and the Tidal Basin. None of attractions were on our tour. The description also represents that we will be making a "Brief stop for lunch", however this did not happen either. Most importantly, the representation of this particular tour was that it would be an "Electric Bike Tour". In fact, the description of the tour boasts " No other tour on our menu covers as many sites as this one!". But instead, we were on a regular tour, with regular bike riders. We were given Electric Bikes, but since all the other riders on the tour had regular bikes, we could not take advantage of the benefits of the electric bikes. We spent the majority of the time, coasting, or braking while we waited for children on the rest of the tour on their non-electric bikes to keep up the pace. The tour was slow and we saw less. When I asked for the tour that we paid for, Emily M said "you are getting an "Electric Bike Tour....you are on a bike Tour and you have Electric Bikes", ignoring the fact that all other representations on both Fat Tire and Unlimited Biking websites clearly differentiate the Electric Bike Tours from all other tours. Subjectively adjusting the English language to defensively tell me, the customer, that I was incorrect, is a disgrace to customer service. At the end of the tour, Emily said "I understand there was a miscommunication on the Fat Tire Website that hasn't been updated" and offered us TO PAY MORE to take the 6:30 PM tour for half-price. When I asked for a refund, she refused, saying that it's a third-party mistake. When I told her the description on the Unlimited Biking website says all the same things in the description of the Electric Bike Tour, she said "oh, we'll have to look into that" and ended the conversation. I loved this experience, it really made the entire trip worthwhile just for this. Bill (our Segway guide) was great at keeping everyone safe and talking about all the major sites in the Mall. The beginning was great as we had time to get used to the Segways, learn the ropes and practice before we hit the cycle paths and walking paths. I felt very Safe. Getting to see Martin Luther King Jr II, the capital building, Lincoln memorial and many others was awesome. This is a great place to rent bikes to ride around downtown DC and through the national mall. The bikes are in good condition, they give you everything you need, and the service is very friendly. Guy was who helped us and he was super professional and courteous. He even had us pose and took out picture before we started. Picture taking is essential in this day and age and if it wasn't for Guy, we would have forgot! :) A member of our party had her own bike and he even helped her with some adjustments. Highly recommend! We just had an amazing night time monument tour with Joe as our guide. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and great with our kids. We wanted to see everything we could, but really wanted to avoid the bus tours. This was perfect! We got to see everything we wanted plus extras, got extra information, and got some fantastic pictures. Joe even brought a special light to help us take great night time shots as a family. I was nervous about taking the 3 kids on a bike tour and splurged a little to do a private tour (absolutely worth it!). While my kids can ride bikes, we don't do it often and I was worried about safety. Joe had everything under control. The pace was perfect, he knew a safe route, and communicated with the kids throughout. He even encouraged them during the couple small inclines we encountered. The kids loved him and he kept them and us entertained the whole time. I would absolutely do it again and recommend asking for Joe if you can. Kids rated this one 10/10! read more

I rented a tandem bike for my boyfriend and I. The rental process was easy and simple - i reserved online and pickup was easy. Unfortunately, we noticed the bike wasn't in the best shape once we started biking. The bike had low air on one tire and struggled to change gears and the gear shifter was broken so you couldn't see which gear you were in. The bike sears are also really hard so that's something to prepare yourself for. We mentioned these issues when we returned the bike and the person said that they gave us the best of the tandem bikes they had and that they just aren't well maintained. We had a really fun time riding around but was disappointed by the quality of the bike and wish they were better maintained so I could rent them more often. read more

Went on a Segaway tour and had the best tour guides EVER! Billy and Jennifer were very patient with us, even after we were late getting there. They taught us how to ride the Segways and made sure everyone was comfortable before we left; very informative about the sites. When they found out the college students in our group were all Gold Star children (their parents died in combat), they were even better and Billy even told them "we owe you all a debt of gratitude for your families' sacrifice ". Enjoyed touring DC on Electric Assist Bicycles. Could have been more enjoyable if we had been given the options of the bike seats. Not everyone in our party was an experienced cyclist and the seats we had were for far more experienced cyclist. Seat on our e-bikes was a spartan roadbike bum-buster. My wife is not used to riding This seat was a killer which she realized when we were 5 miles up the trail in a different part of DC. This was painful for her to the point we had to abandon the ride and she was forced to get off and walk for much of the way back to the shop. At the shop, on reviewing U B's other e-bikes, all but one had the butt buster road bike spartan saddle. The personnel are untrained and not knowledgeable enough to consider a rider's particular requirements, eg type of seat. Also her seat post would not set/ lock securely and repeatedly sank down to the lowest level. This is shabby. The bike was not fit to ride. I explained to the young attendant what had happened. He shrugged, mumbled some response and walked away. There was no one else in the shop. We'll be forced to find a different bike rental company next time read more
