I also ordered the 12pc smoked chicken ($12.99) to share w/a friend. This all arrived w/in 5 minutes, with the owner bringing out the food. I didn't expect there'd be some table service - a pleasant surprise. He was nice too, pointing out the various sauces available by the utensils. The brisket was a bit uneven. The point was tender, but the flat was a bit tough. The smoked chicken seemed juicy throughout with a taut skin. The 12-pc smoked chicken had that and also a slight heat to its rub. The sides were satisfactory. The cucumber salad was light and not over-acidified, and the garlic corn tasted like corn tossed in oil with seasoning (aka delicious). Portion sizes seemed generous. Our server was a nice girl but didn't exude intelligence or personality. I don't say those things as insults, I know a lot of people like that but I don't think that was what we or most people hope for when going to pay an arm and leg for a specialty cuisine like BBQ. We ordered the BBQ sampler for $63 (1/4 lb brisket, 1/4 lb pulled pork, 1/2 rack ribs, potato chips and 2 sides) we added an extra 1/4 lb of brisket and for the sides we chose baked beans and cornbread waffles. The menu said "out of ribs" so in lieu of ribs we ordered Burnt ends which I have been in the mood for and in search of for a while (a lot of bbq places in this area of NH don't have burnt ends) but wait! They had ribs! They didn't have burnt ends... so good job keeping up to date on that menu! So, we got the ribs. The food looked okay when it came out until you looked closer. The whole meal was heavily drizzled with bbq sauce in what I assume was a last ditch effort to make it look appetizing. Usually the moist smoked meats should speak for themselves. They very likely seemed to serve us the leftover Father's Day Brisket and if not, they have really awful, dry, jerky like brisket the entirety of which literally broke apart into dry flakes the second a fork touched it. The pulled pork was also pretty bad. It was charred as if after they pulled it they threw it over an open flame or back on the smoker which isn't commonplace in bbq as it's supposed to be smoked, pulled and served nice and juicy so I assume this was also leftovers. There were sections of it that were charred so bad it was like a burnt chunk of wood that was inedible but a little more than half of the serving was edible with bbq sauce. The Ribs were actually quite good! They were juicy and fell off the bone which is key for good BBQ but they did not redeem the meal yet only added an extra star to this would-have-been 1 star review. The cornbread waffles were floppy and cold, seemed more like an undercooked eggo than a modified cornbread from a good BBQ spot. The beans were fine, nothing to write home about but not disappointing in any notable way. The chips were very good and seemed like they could have been made in house but didn't see or hear anything to confirm this and I wasn't there for chips anyway. My Wife and her Mother both ordered cocktails at $16 a piece, when my wife tried to modify the type of liquor in her cocktail she was told they were batched (pre made In large quantities) with a certain brand of liquor which is not awesome but I guess acceptable for a brewery as it's specialty is supposed to be beer, I did not try any beer as I don't drink much especially on a Wednesday so unfortunately I can't judge the place's brewery ability which also lends itself to the 2nd star. When my wife's cocktail was served the server came out with a shaker and did the performance which I thought was also weird as we had just been told the cocktails are batched so we know you just poured pre batched cocktail in a shaker and shook it. We made our feelings known about the brisket and they were nice enough to refund the extra 1/4 lb we ordered which we did not ingest. The whole meal came out to $147 and we tipped fairly as we really held nothing against the server. They take your card at the door and put a $1 hold on the card which I don't love. After the meal the whole transaction turned into 2 separate transactions for the full amount of close to $200 one of which was taken right out of my bank the other pended for THREE DAYS while my bank held the funds. They should just charge you once the meal is complete. I really question the owners ability to run a business and make smart business decisions including hiring a good Chef. I will not go here ever again and I advise others to stay away unless a change is made. I hope the owner re evaluates his business model and his seriousness to be good because as the only actual bbq place within a high traffic big retail market they really have all the reason to be great. 2 stars. If you read this and say "food costs are high so they can't afford to throw away the leftovers from Father's Day and it's hard to run a small business!" Then maybe should volunteer to be their holiday leftover eater, as the only BBQ place in Salem I'm sure they are not struggling to make it as a small business and it's absolutely unacceptable to serve 3 day old meats. Brisket should be an absolute shining staple of a BBQ restaurant and they should take it very seriously. If these meats weren't leftovers and were in fact prepared the day we dined there then this place really is 1 star and needs to fire its kitchen and get someone serious in there.

It feels like a roadhouse where you can get some relief from a hot day while coming in and having a few beers with friends. Good music on the playlist. Negatives: The food is, at best, average ... despite shockingly high prices, even in the hyper inflationary 2020's. You'll notice in the parking lot ... Lots of jacked up pick-up trucks, classic muscle cars, etc. The crowd here is as you'd expect for the border of NH and blue collar MA. The best way to describe the average clientele would be hard drinking, loud laughing 'Live Free or Die Massholes'. Upon entering, this place felt like a classic roadhouse ... dark and cave-like in places but with a large row of windows letting the sun flood into that particular area. It felt a little like a Texas desert Roadhouse in a shabby chic kind of way. The bar area is where I sat and right away, I was hot with the foul and pungent odor of years worth of spilled beer. You know that sour 'vinegar' smell that one would expect from a fraternity house carpet? It's here ... and it's bad. As John Taffer or Gordon Ramsay would scream ... This place needs a good cleaning! The beers here are $7 - $12 each, depending on what you get. They have some Michelob Light-esque draft specials. You are given the choice of 16 or 22 oz. beers and the glasses are chilled. Props for that. The bartender was a little frosty. He seemed more cordial to regulars ... but he was kind of short and matter of fact with me, at one point losing patience as I debated the menu and walked away mid-order without saying anything, only to return a few minutes later. The television situation was odd. The World Cup was on ... Every bar in the US was showing the games. Every television above the bar was broadcasting Keno numbers. Only one television, which was mounted on a side wall broadcasted the soccer game and to see it, everyone had to turn their head and look at a spot 6 inches above the bar top, so you were essentially staring right into the eyes of the people sitting next to you. Creepy. The food here was unfortunate. I think of places like Franklin BBQ in Texas and using 'Texas BBQ' to describe this place, after trying the food, is akin to the most egregious online dating exaggeration ever made. Imagine seeing a photo of a modelesque, jacked person with a full head of hair online ... and the person who showed up was a paunchy, middle-aged balding dude using pictures from 20 years ago. That's how expecting Texas BBQ ends up vs. what you actually get. There's nothing wrong with the food. It's edible ... which is more than some BBQ places can claim. However* it's all dry AF, probably smoked overnight ... taken out in the early morning ... and your brisket or pulled pork has been sitting for 6 - 8 hours under a heat lamp. The sides are made quickly ... the $7 Mac and cheese was basically spiral pasta with a white cheese sauce poured over it. Edible but I'd rather get freshly made Kraft Mac and Cheese. The $7 loaded tots ... a small cup of tater tots with a similar white cheese sauce drizzled over them and a couple of bacon bits on top. The $20 pulled pork was dry ... some big pieces, some chopped pieces. Based on other reviews I decided to avoid the more expensive brisket, which was probably a good move, given the dry pulled pork. I tasted (or smelled in the parking lot) no smokiness. As someone who lived in the South and often ate real BBQ ... You know it when you get the authentic stuff because you burp up smokey taste for the better part of the night after eating true roadside BBQ. This was more like Trader Joe's reheated BBQ. Food and restaurant costs are rising so fast these days, I have absolutely no idea what is normal and what is high. Based on other interactions with menus ... I believe these to be on the high side. $20 for a burger ... $20 - $30 for a single BBQ meat ... $15 - $25 for a BBQ sandwich ... $6 - $7 for a side. I had the pulled pork single meat, which came with two sides and a beer. My total, before tip, was $35. The bartender got a 20% tip, because that's my minimum. But he deserved maybe 10%. Beyond the somewhat dickish attitude ....he didn't ask or bring me any BBQ sauce (a necessity for the dry, bland meat) or Ketchup.. I had to walk over to a table and get some. He never checked in to see how my food was. No small talk ... no 'Can I get you anything else?'. Tipping culture in the US sucks because if you leave any less than 20% for bad service, you get chased into the parking lot. So that's my review in a nutshell. Would I return? Probably not ... unless I was meeting friends for beers. The food value just wasn't there for me. There seemed to be a lot of regulars, so it can't be all bad (although majority of other 3-star reviews seem accurate) The bottom line is that this is a better bar than a restaurant. It's cool and feels like a good recreation of a fun roadhouse.
