It had a full kitchen, big bathroom, nice closet, and a smart TV -- super convenient and comfy. The rooftop deck was a great bonus too, with two grills and plenty of space to hang out. The hotel also has laundry facilities and gym. The location is perfect -- right across from Balboa Park, a quick drive to restaurants, and there's even a 7-eleven across the street for last-minute snacks. Parking is valet-only at $30 a night. We were fortunate enough to find free street parking every day in front of the hotel. Just a heads-up: this is a timeshare property, so be prepared for staff trying to get you to attend a 90-minute presentation. If you're not interested, just politely decline. Other than that, it was a great stay for the price and location -- I'd definitely come back!

But then I walked into this giant, grand, old school San Diego hotel and fell even more in love. Ulysses S. Grant Jr., son of the president, built it as a monument to his father. This place is HUGE. Literally an entire city block. It opened in 1910 with 437 rooms, because apparently people in 1910 were not interested in subtlety. The history is everywhere, but it doesn't feel like you're sleeping inside a museum. It feels grand and dramatic. Exactly what a historic hotel should be. And breakfast was FAB. I'll review the Grant Grill separately. The U.S. Grant understood luxury before luxury needed an Instagram strategy.

Staff has always been friendly and responsive, and the keypad entry makes everything easy. It just works.

Our view was overlooking the old parking lot. Don't come here expecting some really cute boutique hotel. Come here realizing you spent around $200 for decent lodging with a great location. The room was clean. The bed was comfortable. The AC did the job. My only real complaint was the water pressure in the shower. Decent, but not great. Still, completely understandable considering its a converted apartment building. The office is really cute. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The rooftop sauna/pool is a great touch. Our stay included breakfast which was solid and the restaurant has a great view. So, if you are looking for some fancy cute boutique hotel, you may be a little disappointed, but if you are going to have to pay a lot more to find that in Downtown San Diego. If you are looking for solid lodging, with a perfect location for a little Italy getaway, this place is perfect. Don't be fooled by the rooftop restaurant photos - its tiny and much less epic than it looks. The pool is Itty bitty. It looked like if two people stood inside with arms outstretched, that was the length of the pool. The rooftop sitting area could be so cool with that view - but there's no shade. In short: The whole place just felt undeveloped, barebones, and as cheap as possible. In a wonderful part of the city so close to Little Italy. And it was clean enough. But it didnt feel luxurious or nice at all. And I know, it was 200$ a night during a holiday weekend, normally 130$ or so on a normal weekend. So luxury is maybe not something you can expect. But still. I was expecting something better than this. I haven't even mentioned the 55$ per night valet, maybe thats just what it costs in the area. And the real kicker, the reason I was annoyed enough to leave this review? A random charge for $17.02 at 3 am the morning I was set to leave. I was asleep, I didn't authorize this. I talked to the front desk, they had no answer. Called two more times, still nothing. So I finally just disputed it on my credit card. Will not be staying here again.
