Man this placed lived up to the hype! Popped in close to closing on Sunday night and were warmly greeted by Matt. He didn't rush us and was very quick to help with any questions we had. Friend and I grabbed some shirts, book and patches while enjoying all the great art around the shop. You can definitely (and easily) drop a penny here but absolutely worth it!

I come from a family of creativity so I've always appreciated art, music, and hella cool t-shirts. And if you know me, you know I have more unique t-shirts than underwear. Seriously I could choose a different tee for everyday of the month. Upper Playground to the rescue! Upper Playground near Haight in San Francisco is the mother of all. It's the original location, founded in 1998. This location is convenient for anyone as street parking is usually available within a couple blocks - remember it's in "not as busy" lower Haight. The company highlights the work of local and international artists such as Sam Flores, Alex Padre, Jeremy Fish, David Choe, and Estevan Oriol. UP has also partnered with Adidas for past collections. Upper Playground has more than just t-shirts, but also long sleeve, hoodies, headwear, caps aka lids, books, dvds, original art, and other "street art" inspired goods. Just note that although the merchandise is popular with the next generation it is not cheap, as t-shirts average nearly $30 each, tho sales are always going on too. One of my fav t-shirts from UP is a San Francisco Giants Baseball inspired of a large walrus styling a SF Giants lid tilted to the side. Haha! Okay you either get where I'm coming from or you don't. It's relaxed wear, so no one should be stressing it, playa! Just be who we want to be. I guess working in corporate America and forced to wear suits on the daily made me appreciate the relax wear of today. Just note there's a difference between being lazy and tossing on last Tuesday's t-shirt and actually choosing an artistic inspired creation for the day. I still have to "dress up" for work nowadays, but every chance I get I'm in t-shirt & jeans. Yes, the t-shirts are hella expensive at Upper Playground, but you have to admit it's hella dope! It's all about self expression & freedom...

    Cute stationary and maps.

From funky, modern cookbooks to cute stuffed animals, purses, youthful and quirky women's clothes, beautiful silk scarves, and feminine jewelry (including real gold earrings!), to lots of fun cards for any occasion (including Jewish holidays, which is important to me!), socks with funny sayings on them, hipster aprons, soaps, candles, fun tchotchkes of all sorts, there's a LOT to delight in inside this wonderful store! I would call it WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE, because the entry is definitely accessible, and if anything isn't, the employees go out of their way to move things and make it accessible! Their attitudes in general are very friendly and helpful, as is that of the owner (it's a woman-owned store!). Therapy doesn't close until 7:30 pm, which gives you plenty of time to run in for a birthday card and gift after you leave work and are on your way to a friend's birthday party! Overall, Therapy is a fun, quirky, happy-feeling store, and I love that it's managed to survive the last few decades on Valencia St.!

I was correct and also so glad I took the time to stop in. Firstly, the store employees: Tiara and Janielle were immediately and incredibly helpful, knowing that I'd likely want quarters for the vending machines and accepting my silly $2 bills (which my father put in my stocking at Christmas because he's a prankster like that) and handing me a cup full of $6 worth of quarters while explaining the vending machine limit of 3 prints per person very kindly. I asked if it was ok if I filmed and they assured me it was totally fine! This was really cool later on, as the shop's account commented on the video that I posted and that felt very interactive! After I had used up my last quarter and gotten my 6th mini mystery print from the vending machines, I started my search for a birthday card for the previously mentioned prankster-father of mine. The selection was delightful! Perhaps not massive, but still delightful as every option was by a local artist and priced really fairly for that privilege (about $6-6.50 per greeting card, which is actually a great value). I found four birthday cards for various people in my life and two "get well" cards for a friend and my mom who are both about to have surgery. After that I started to search through the other items in the shop, of which there were MANY and the options were so incredibly cute and kitschy as well as being very usable. I didn't end up getting anything other than the greeting cards, mostly because of the pricing, but I can respect a high price-tag when it's on a locally made artisanal item. I just couldn't personally afford any of it on that particular day! My six greeting cards totaled out to $46 including tax, and I'm ok with that! I've already used one and it was appreciated greatly! I have to say that the highlight of this visit wasn't the items or the super cool mystery art vending machines, although all of that was incredibly fun and exactly what I was looking for going in.. but the staff really made me feel welcomed and hyped up and I think that the soul of a store is sometimes made or broken by it's employees and how obviously they like or dislike their jobs. These individuals obviously enjoy working here and I felt welcomed by their energetic and thoughtful interactions with me. I will absolutely return!

The staff is friendly and the variety of bags and accessories is always exciting to browse through. I ended up getting the Black Medium Cargo Crossbody. It can fit a water bottle, my sunglass case, phone, wallet, keys, and more! It's a really good size and I was impressed at how much can fit in it. I also like that it was made our of recycled material. It was around $56, so the price point isn't that bad esp cause I know the quality is good. My only small complaint is that there aren't enough mirrors in the store--it can be tricky to see how a bag looks when you're wearing it. A few more mirrors would make the shopping experience even better. Still, a great store and I'll definitely be back!

I also adore their baby reusables, which are perfect for takeout food. I own several packing cubes and dopp kits--one for skincare and the other for makeup. While Baggu bags are on the pricier side, they're definitely worth it and last a long time. I'd say the prices are comparable to Cath Kidston, Vera Bradley, LeSportsac, and Kipling, but Baggu offers better designs at possibly a lower cost. I recently visited the store for my birthday, which was exciting since I've always purchased online through Facebook, Mercari, Depop, and Poshmark. I'm thrilled with my purchase! The staff were very helpful in applying my 10% off coupon for first-time email subscribers, and they assisted me in selecting the perfect placement for my bag--a detail I really appreciated.
