I normally love this place. The baked goods, even though somewhat pricey, are always top notch. That is until I purchased two of the cakes in the display case this afternoon, a vanilla and chocolate expresso. Both were decorated very well, but things went down hill after that. Second visit for us - last time was a month ago and everything was outstanding. (Apricot croissant, vanilla scone, several other laminated pastries.). Today's purchases included a blueberry chausson, apricot croissant, ham and onion quiche, and a sourdough boule. I am in town to help my Gator pack and the quiche will easily suffice for breakfast and lunch so we don't have to leave her hovel (um, I mean, apartment) whilst packing. Good god(ess) I love this place. Walk in and leave the guilt behind because the beautiful, buttery goodness they create inside is far more important than worrying about calories. Think of it as filling your body with happy, fluffy love. Bread, croissants, and all the things I couldn't spell here if I tried are worth tasting. Buy a small amount and eat it fresh, because it's just not quite so delicious the next day. If you are really lucky, there will be something still warm in their selection. Whatever it is, get THAT. We heard about the Saturday afternoon wine tasting so we decided to check it out. We were taken aback by the price of the tasting for two ($30) but then we were handed each a $15 gift certificate with the tasting. The tasting was wonderful! We tried eight wines, and the person running the tasting was very friendly and informative. They also had cheese and olive oil samples to try with the wine. After the tasting we decided to use the gift certificates to buy some bread and cookies since we were entertaining that evening. When we were checking out I mentioned we had never been in the shop before and we just loved it! The women behind the counter then proceeded to give us a free cinnamon roll and chocolate pastry so we could try some of her favorites. They were wonderfully delicious! I cannot wait to come back not only for the delicious selections, but for the customer service! read more

I really don't think you can go wrong at Uppercrust. We've been here several times over the years and the pastries have always been amazing and the staff has always been friendly. I have a friend who is obsessed with their French press coffee here as well. Recently, I went to get some pastries for a friend and we all shared an assortment. A couple recommendations based off of that: - The Peach Chausson (which tbh I don't know how to pronounce so I just say 'the peach' and let them fill in the blank) is so good. We've purchased this at some local coffee shops before and it's by husband's favorite. You really can't go wrong with it. - The Almond Rose. Omg. I'm absolutely the farthest thing from a pastry chef but I like my almond croissants buttery + almondy + rich + doughy. The best one we have had before was at a random cafe in the Florida Keys, but this one just beat it out. It's rich and doughy and the amount of almond is everything I could want on an almond croissant. We had other pastries as well, but none that I loved as much as these. This store is cute and quaint and has such a large selection and staff that is both kind and knowledgable. (The staff member who helped me most recently kept congratulating me on my taste with every selection I made, as if I did something special + praiseworthy. Clearly they know how to boost up their customer population.) They also have a wide variety of wine (and wine tasting nights too!). Have I reviewed them before? It doesn't matter. I love this place. The service is always friendly, efficient and the food is divine! All their baked products that I have tried are delish. My current fave is this mushroom rose that my one year old and I devoured last Saturday. Don't sleep on their savory items. They're just as amazing as the sweets. My toddler always loves their butter rolls and selection of stuffed toys. Almond croissant and butter croissant were/are a staple of my pregnancy and post pregnancy life Rosemary and traditional baguette are always a hit at dinner or for snack time for my family. There is definitely some weird stuff going on with the baker here these days. Before things got weird, ALL of the bread and baked goods would be there in cases ready when they opened at 7:00 AM sharp. Now when you go there, you are lucky if there is anything baked yet, even at 9:00 AM. Is everything cool, or did something terrible happen? This Belgian bakery has amazing baked good when they are available. The bread always as a crisp, salty, and eggy exterior with a soft flavorful inside. You can buy an entire loaf and have it pre-sliced if you desire, but it will dry out faster. I highly recommend their baguettes and ficelle, with the rosemary kind being my favorite. All of the pastries are light, crisp, and scrumptious with fillings like pistachio cream cheese. There items are never too sweet either. I am knocking off 2 stars for the below paragraph. Keep in mind once again that these breads are good when you can get them. The bakery would be much more profitable and have more happy customers if they were open during their posted hours with baked goods available during those open hours. People are really starting to talk trash about this place these days and just getting fed up with it. That is really too bad, because I remember how great it used to be. read more

I spent a summer in Brussels and this is about as close as you'll get to pâtisserie or a boulangerie in Gainesville. Some of comments below are true and very funny. I'd really love to see those people go into an authentic French bakery in Paris and demand to know why every item listed on the menu or the website isn't available. It'd be a scream to watch. Anyway, their freshly baked breads and croissants are all delicious and at a reasonable price. I highly recommend the pains au chocolat. My favorite though, are the "roses", which are savory pastries. I've had goat cheese, onion, tomatoes & basil as well as turkey and chevre. All delicious. Another nice touch is that they serve drinks you'd find in a real French shop, like orangina and carbonated water. This place is one of my favorite bakery/cafés to go to in Gainesville. Located far away from the crazy traffic and hustle of Archer Road, this place is a nice break from all the noise while providing some delicious bread, pastries, and soup. While I've been here several times before in the past to have their baked pastries and bread, such as their dessert tarts or croissants, I've never had lunch here or tried their more savory options. I am so glad I did this time around. For lunch, I got the ham and cheese puff pastry with a bowl of vegetable soup. The puff pastry was nice and flaky and was a decent size with a good sized piece of ham and cheese baked into the pastry with herbs and a dollop of Dijon mustard. The vegetable soup was also really good. Usually when you think about vegetable soup, you think of some watery soup with a few chunks of carrots or potatoes here and there. Not this soup. This soup was actually very hearty, with lots of white beans and tomatoes that really gave this soup body and volume. All in all, this place is fantastic and has lots of options. We are entirely unapologetic for our gushing praise of Uppercrust baked goods. This small shop in the Fresh Market Plaza carries a lovely assortment of wines, pastas, olive oils and other gourmet goods, but it's the baked goods that we dream about. There are two items in particular that we're pretty sure make the world a better place: Uppercrust's Rosemary Bread, which is offered as a bâtard, boule, baguette or dinner rolls and their Cheddar and Chive Scones ($3.75). We're partial to the bâtard ($5). This fragrant loaf is perfectly crunchy on the outside and warm and doughy on the inside. While the rosemary pairs particularly well with roasted meats and stews, we eat it slice after thick slice with absolutely everything. The addictiveness of the bread may be rivaled only by the scones. The cheddar and chive scones (available with or without ham) are moist and savory with a slight peppery bite. They remind us that butter can be dangerously fantastic. Granted, for many of us the prices at Uppercrust make these items special occasion treats rather than everyday fare, but for the sake of our waistlines that's exactly what they should be. Still, we stop in whenever we're in Gainesville and we implore the Uppercrust crew to consider opening a branch here in Orlando. read more

If you know me, you know that even though I like to eat healthy, my number one vice is bread. Well, uppercrust is bread heaven. I wish they could bottle up the smell of bread, croissants, and pastries baking because it's probably one of my favorite smells in the world. Uppercrust is a chic little bakery located on the more residential side of Gainesville also known as Millhopper. They focus on Provençal baking and really outdo themselves with the amount of pastries they make and the amount of wines they carry. You should definitely make a trip out of coming here to allow yourself time to peruse through all of the cool trinkets, imported foods, wines, and cheeses. Many of their pastas are very special and straight form Italy so be sure to ask a lot of questions!! My pièce de résistance when I come is the apricot croissant. Although I'm not a fan of apricot flavored foods, this one definitely takes the cake. I can eat this flaky little pastry forever. The filling is not too sweet and the pastry is just overall heavenly. I wish that these pastries were a bit lighter and less flaky, but I still enjoy every single fragment. The potato leek rolls, chocolate croissant, and variety of savory roses are some of my favorites as well. A new cool thing about uppercrust is their wine and food tasting every Saturday. They choose a region, choose 8-10 wines, and showcase it all for a few hours every weekend. They have an incredible staff of very knowledgeable wine experts (Marjorie, Brennan, and John) who will teach you everything you need to know about each wine. All wines are usually discounted here and so it's the perfect time to invest! After you have some delicious sips, they also offer a wide array of regional dishes and cheese to try! Marjorie will also be holding some wine seminars at different restaurants around Gainesville with higher end wines, so you should ask about joining her e-mail list! If you're looking to treat yourself, this is the place to go. For a student budget, it's a little pricy (be prepared to spend around $4 per pastry,) but it is worth it for the quality and happiness you will obtain from each divine delectable. Ever get a craving for a really good (and not made Cinnabon (seriously, do they have a monopoly on all things cinnamon (why, yes, I do like my parenthesis!) now?)) cinnamon pastry? I get them all the time. And shortly before I moved from Gainesville to Texas, I found a place that could really satisfy that craving. I know that I am a huge snob in many areas: marijuana, pizza, doughnuts. Well, I am not ashamed to add cinnamon pastries to that list. People seem to think that they can just mix cinnamon and some form of sugar together and slap it on any sort of dough and it's a cinnamon pastry. Okay, maybe... I guess... that is sort of the definition, but it doesn't make it a good cinnamon pastry! It doesn't even make it an adequate one. If you are a cinnamon pastry snob, like myself, you need to go to Uppercrust. The cinnamon sugar is so good. Very cinnamon-y and sweet. But the star of the show is the part that is usually an afterthought to everyone else. The pastry is a little crispy on the outside (but not so crispy that it will cover you in tiny pastry flakes that you will be picking off your shirt all morning) and soft and gooey on the inside. Usually pastry is a simply a bland vehicle for the cinnamon sugar. Not this time. The pastry is sweet and has a wonderfully complimentary flavor to the cinnamon. The rolls some covered in either your traditional sugar icing or a cream cheese frosting. I don't really like cream cheese, but I hear from those that do that this frosting is amazing. And I would assume that their other pastries are also incredible. The Kid gets pastries there. Am I bad step-mother because I have no idea what he gets there, even though I know he's told me several times? Yeah, I thought so. Anyway... go to Uppercrust and find your favorite. read more

The perfect patissiere'! I have walked by this establishment several times not knowing what it was. I saw "productions" and just assumed it was some sort of video production company;-) Surprise! All things French and more can be found here. The pastries: so many delightful treats to choose from. I had a choc. mousse in a small choc. rose cup. That one bite was so luscious! The mousse was smooth and silky and it wasn't over sweet. I also filled my belly w/a mini pear tarte tartin. The crust was spectacular....slightly crunchy and not soggy a bit. The glaze and the pear slices were heaven. I also ordered a rosemary baguette. Sad that I didn't get to try it. The next day for breakfast, it was hard as a rock. I guess I should know better than to buy fresh bread at the end of the day. All the other goodies: shelves are stocked with pate', sauces, dressings, and every other type of jarred foods you can think of. They also have a refrigerated section with all types of cheese, homemade dips and so many other delights that I cannot remember. Uppercrust is my favorite bakery in Gainesville. It is not particularly close to where I live, but it is worth going out of my way to enjoy their flaky pastries. To start, they offer both sweet and savory pastries. I love the savory French rose with artichoke, cheese and tomato. It is so good. The chocolate and raspberry croissant and peach and cheese danishes are also wonderful. They have beautiful cookies that will delight children or adults. We had them at a meeting I went to, and everyone loved them. On Fridays, they stock challah bread, which is delicious. They also do a wine and cheese tasting on Saturdays, which is really fun. They need a slightly bigger space because it gets crowded really quickly. The prices are a bit high, but the items are homemade, delicious and, of course, the money supports our local economy and a great business. I have heard they do cooking classes and hope to do one soon. It is a great spot to take visitors when they visit or for a personal treat in the midst of errands (or, you know, any time). read more

Uppercrust is another Gainesville institution that's been around since the mid-1980s. They probably have the best dessert and savory baked goods in town, plus wine, tea, honey, and various other imported food items. The sugar cookies, flourless chocolate cakes, and mini rustic pizzas are great high-lights of their offerings. Also, the wine selection is supposed to be impressive though I've not yet purchases any wine from them. They are a bit expensive. Were the baked goods over at Fresh Market a bit better, I think they would not be able to charge what they do. Still, they are the best in the business. read more

Fellow Yelpers, I think when reading my review, written by myself but speaking for most of Gainesville. Especially from what is heard around the town about UpperCrust. Have you ever walked inside a business and felt so unwanted in a place? If not come here! The looks on the faces with literally make you afraid to even ask a question. (Totally hipster snobby staff ) that about sums up UpperCrust, oh wait let me not forget the "Productions" I think I would be willing to take the abuse and unfriendliness of the staff the pastries and bread were were French and authentic. However it's a sad reality that it's not. It's definitely not the worse I ever had but far from the best. Prices are ridiculously high for the quality of the items. The stuffed pastries barely have any filling inside them. The "French" roses are good. But not worth $6.00 plus tax for something smaller then the palm of your hand. The store is very cluttered. From the window it looks like an old antique shop with cards etc all over. It's very dated inside. I think this place relies on all the regular locals that have been here for years. Once something opens with competition, I can not see this place staying around. Yelp has had a check In Coupon on the app. But be careful using it. You will get horrible looks like your crazy. I would actually stop by every now and then if they were not so stuck up. Maybe learned a little bit about customer service. But I'm like all the others that stopped going here because they are ridiculous I think giving two stars is generous for just the food. Service is less then 1 star. this 5 star review was hard earned as my visit had some big ups but a few downs so this 5 is earned. I ordered a special loaf of Challah for Rosh Hashannah. I ordered on Wednesday and was told to please pay in advance because it was a special order. So on Thursday I came in to pay and the ticket was at the register and ready to go when I arrived. It was very affordable. On Sunday I came in to pick up the bread and the store was PACKED. Probably because there isn't a lot of space to stand when you walk in. Everyone was packed in and no one knew who was next to be helped. Because I had paid in advance and was just picking up my order, and i wasn't getting anything else, I mentioned to a woman working further back in the store ,by the wine that I was picking up. She said I would need to wait until it was my turn but a few other people mentioned that they were also picking up and prepaid. I don't think she realized the store was packed and getting fussy. She brought out our orders quickly. While all of this was going down, a woman who I assume was the owner was assisting a very upset pair of women. I'm not sure what the issue really was but it seemed like the customers fault and the owner went above and beyond to try to remedy the problem and make the people happy (which wasnt going to happen no matter what). I was truly impressed. You're probably asking at this point how was the bread? I was very good. A dense crumb and glistening crust were impeccable. I WILL be back to try some of their other goodies and will definitely be ordering from them next year. read more

My favorites are their almond croissants, ham & Gruyere rose, and their artichoke tomato onion rose. The roses mentioned are savory and packed with flavor. Their almond croissant is flaky on the outside and soft inside with sweet almond paste. Their breads and baked goods makes me miss Paris. It is difficult not to stop in when I am in Fresh Market.
