Wow, so hate doing this especially of a local business, but my experience here was so awful I'd give zero stars if possible! Booked what should have been a straight-forward blowdry and trim, and ended up literally walking out of Linda's chair 20 minutes into the service utterly frustrated at both her lack of ability and or lack of concern to even listen to what I was telling her I wanted! My hair's curly and long. All I wanted was her to blow it smooth and trim the ends afterwards. Many other stylists have done it well before and it should have been simple. But not for Linda! First, I asked her several times to use more smoothing/heat product to keep it from heat damage. But she used barely any. I asked repeatedly for her to use a big round brush for the blowout, but she kept insisting on using a flat paddle brush instead, which any stylist who's ever blown out curly hair well, knows will not get a good outcome, especially smooth roots. She also didn't work in small sections. Instead kept blowing the back all over the place while brushing and leaving the entire front part of my hair hanging in my face over my mask making it super hard to breathe and impossible to even read my magazine! She kept pushing my head down saying "keep still and keep your head down" so she could "get more control" which no stylist has ever done before. But if she'd been using the round brush she wouldn't have had that issue! And I was so uncomfortable with all that hair hanging in my face, and being forced to stare at a pretty dirty tile floor as well. When I just couldn't take it anymore, I asked her at the very least to section up the front out of my face so I could breathe better and read. But when I looked up to ask, i saw she didn't even have a nozzle attached to the blow-dryer! She was literally just blowing hot air over the back of my head brushing straight down with the flat brush creating a ton more frizz! I asked why she wasn't at least using a nozzle and she said it didn't matter caz she was gonna use the flat iron after! But it matters! And That's when I left! Literally got up and walked out! I'm super tolerant, but even I have my limits! A round brush, small sections, a freaking nozzle on the dryer so it doesn't just blow hot air all over my head creating more damage and frizz, product enough to deflect heat damage, and don't just rely on the flat iron to do all the work for u! But why the heck do I have to pay for the privilege of having to tell the professional how to do her job?? Shouldn't she already know these very basic things?? Don't know about u, but when I'm paying good money for a professional blowout that's what I want! Not some cheap, quick-dry method I could have done better, faster and for free myself at home! Update: my hair this morning is one giant frizz ball and I now have to start from scratch! But I needed it to look nice today and it's Sunday and all salons I know r closed so have to do it myself anyway! What an utter disappointment this whole experience was! read more

Pretty disappointed with the amount of money I spent, the amount of experience my stylist said she had and how bad my hair ended up looking. It wasn't a cut, it was highlights for my roots. once completed there was approx 3/4 inch before highlights began. I did contact my stylist and she offered to add more high lights, but if she was capable of doing a good job, she should've done it the first time. Highlights are a very time consuming deal and I wasn't willing to risk being let down again. Two stars cause I suppose stylists can have off days, but wouldn't recommend. read more

This is the best place to go to get your hair cut or colored. The Owner Matt always makes you feel pretty. He's great with color,he knows which looks best for you. Always friendly, coffee, cookies. I agree with Sierra H. Very disappointed for the amount of money and the color. The stylist changed my entire tone from light blonde to more of a "dirty dishwater" or strawberry blonde, not what I asked for. I just wanted a partial on the growth, highlights with a few lowlights for depth, not to go almost brown. I paid what she asked and tipped well based on my standard 20%. I didn't complain about the color but she could probably tell I was surprised. When I got the email receipt I saw that tax and a credit card service charge had been added. I questioned it (my understanding being that tax is only charged on product, not the service). She sent me a scathing text telling me never to come back. Not a problem. Now, I need to spend more money finding someone to help recover my color. read more

This is the worst experience I have ever had at a salon. I had an appointment with Don for a blowout and straightening. The shampoo bowl was dirty with hair and other items. When I mentioned it to him, he then cleaned it out. He could not get his blow dryer to work, tried several outlets and after several tries, had to borrow another one from another station. I have very curly hair but he tried to convince me that I did not need it straightened with an iron even though I told him I was attending a wedding by the ocean. Once he did use the iron, he only passed it by my stands of hair once and I had to show him how to iron it correctly. Then he pulled strands of my hair very hard from my scalp. I had an appointment with jerry for a haircut and when I arrived at 4 30 (app was at 4 30) he wasn't there. I called him and he said he was less than 15 min away. Well 45 min passed and he never showed up! Never going back there again. read more

Kris is absolutely amazing!!! I work at a public pool during the summers and the chlorine and constant exposure to sun really destroy my hair and skin. He trimmed off all the dead ends and added some beautiful bolyage highlights which blended perfectly with my already sun bleached hair. He was extremely professional and explained to me why he did everything that he was doing. He is extremely fun and friendly and makes you feel like his best friend while he's working! Kris also had so many amazing tips to help prevent further damage to my hair and skin. He is definitely the only one I will trust with my hair! I needed my hair trimmed so I went to main street and walked around to see the different salons in the strip. I went in to multiple just to see the salons and find a salon that I felt would fit me. I figured I would need to schedule an appointment at a later date which was my plan unless they said there was availability now. I went to one down the street and they told me they only took cash or checks and they were appointment only which I totally understand. I took their card and figured it was a possibility if I remember to bring cash for the appointment. The other salon I went to was very busy and instantly when I walked in I felt that place would up sale every product they carry. I asked about availability and they were very limited with my schedule and the lady wasn't very patient with me so I left. There was one other that I didn't go in based on how it looked from the outside. As I was getting into my car I saw a sign that said walk ins welcomed and the prices for this salon. So I went into to check availability. The 2 stylist were currently busy but then another stylists named Valerie said she just stopped in but she would take me. I told her what I wanted and explained that I am getting married soon so I just need my hair trimmed. She immediately knew exactly what I wanted and she never tried to sale me products like most salons do. She also didn't tell me what she wanted to do to my hair but instead asked what I wanted and followed that. The time it took to have my hair trimmed was like having coffee with a friend. I have been to places that barely talk to you which I do not like. The price was beyond reasonable!! I definitely will come back here with Valerie! We moved to the area in 2008 and found this place walking up Main Street one night about 8pm and saw Don in the window finishing up a cut. He stayed opened and gave me, a 40 something year old balding guy a great cut (according to my wife and our teenage daughters.) Since then we have been back regularly and he cuts everyone in the family - our 5 year old surfer dude, 7 year old aspiring actress, 18 year old daughter/athelete, 20 year old college student/actress and my wife. Before going to Upstairs Downstairs, I would cringe anytime one of the ladies in our family would get their hair done, never knowing if they would come back happy or upset - with Don they always come home smiling. We have spent a lot of hours there and except for one upset customer waiting a long time for Jerry (who is not there any more) we have seen nothing but happy people coming and going. The salon has gone through some great changes in the last two years, the new owner has done some great improvements, added stylists and the people there are all really nice to all of us. Every time we are on Main Street we stop by to say hi. BTW - I don't have a problem with Yelp - I have used it for about two years and found some great places. The problem with some businesses is that their clientele is not into posting on Yelp so one bad review really hurts. Just put one of those "Yelp" barcode signs in the window, perhaps more customers will Yelp about the salon. read more

I've never written a review before, but thought this random act of kindness deserved mention. I met Mathew one day as I was making my way down Main Street. I have a severe, terminal, heart-lung disease, and he and I started chatting when he noticed my PICC line. He was so kind, and listened to my story of triumph over adversity. Out of the blue, Matt offered that he would love to give me a little pampering on the house! It has been so long since I had a haircut, I felt like I had just won the lottery! :) Matt was true to his word. On Wednesday, as I was preparing to celebrate the Jewish New Year, Matt made time in his busy schedule to take care of me. I cannot quite express how much his kindness meant to me, but I can tell you this: he spent time, effort and took care of me in a way that no hair stylist I have ever paid for did. I had been searching for a new salon to go to, since I just moved back to the area. This salon is the best I've tried! They are so friendly. I brought in a picture of what I wanted and they actually listened and did a great job. Mason did my color. I'm blond and pretty picky and it was perfect. I got so many compliments. And jerry did my cut, which was just as good as the color. If you're looking for a salon to go to you should def. try them! And they have reasonable pricing too! read more

I go this salon every few weeks to get my hair done by Cathy. She always cuts and colors my hair perfectly (and my boyfriend pays plenty of attention to me when I get home! ).
