avoid. I have to say that I am pretty particular with my hair, It's dyed and I have had what is called a curtain cut, where my hair drapes around my head all the way. I went in to Uptown on a saturday looking for a walk in, but they rudely told me they don't do walk ins anymore because of covid. They kept telling me to make an appointment but then out of the blue said they take walk ins mondays and tuesdays. CONFUSING I walked in on tuesday like they said and it was empty, all the barbers sitting around and 1 said he was open and could give me a cut. Since I don't get the usual fade or taper I didn't really know what to ask for so I described what I wanted, LONG on top and short on the sides because that's how the haircut is supposed to be done. He then asked me how long on the sides 0,1.... but I said a 4 because, like I said, my hair is LONG and it's been intentionally grown out for 1 year to the point. At first once the cutting began on the sides I was excited to have my first hair cut in a year because it's been so hard to maintain. We were chatting it up and I was confident he'd do me right and give me a nice cut, but he kept hacking away. Every minute that passed was excruciating and I saw how much hair he was cutting off. He kept using to sharp edge trimmer on the edges so much that I thought I was bleeding and it stung when he put the after shave on at the end. The expression on my face went from a smile to full on upset and the guy didn't even bother to say a word. He didn't ask me if I liked my hair, all he did was take my money. I don't know what this was about. I went in looking for a cleanup and a trim on my hair that was bleach, pink and 7" long but I left with the shortest hair I've had in 10 years and seemingly intentionally cut all of the bleached hair off of my head without asking me how long I even wanted it. I'm guessing they're homophobic and assumed I'm gay or oriented some different way than they are because of my hair and my alternative style, but I was literally going with my girlfriend (who was next door getting her hair dyed pink too) so that we could have long matching hair for our business together and photography projects we work on together. I asked for a refund after all was said and done and he was upset because he said I asked for the top of my hair to blend in with the sides, which is false. I don't know his name, and I really don't think it matters. The barbers here are rude and glared at me for a while and none of them wear any kinds of masks or face coverings while they work. I heard one of them coughing in the back and they said their dealing with a short staff, probably because they're too sick to work. I am not satisfied with a full refund or a free hour of the guys time, I just want my hair back on my head and there's no way that can be done now. I am genuine in my recommendation to avoid this place. For your own physical and mental health just stay away from this place, a short bad haircut is probably the worst bad service someone can provide, and that's what I received. read more

Review is based on my nephews experience. Not the job done. Hair cut was very clean and exactly what was wanted. Originally heavy metal was playing which didn't bother us because my nephew actually likes that music. His dad previously being in a metal band. However after my sis stepped out for a few minutes to take a call she heard some vile talk. yes it's a barbershop, places are known for guys to be guys & be open with one another in a male environment. But that talk could have waited till a 6 year old was done with his 35 min haircut. His birthday is going to be a big production tomorrow, two parties so my sister has a lot of party planning to do, but made time to swing by straight after school to a place in Whittier we always pass. She walks in to hear talk about blowjobs & masturbation. I'm 31, overhearing those conversations doesn't bother me. But it's not for kids to hear. I'm sure it's a great place for grown males. I brought my boy in for Father's Day weekend and the barber John was Super dry when my 6 yr old was trying to hold a conversation which was kinda annoying to watch. The haircut alone was terrible. It wasn't what I was expecting and when he tried to correct me on how to ask for what I wanted (lol) which is fine if the haircut at least looked decent. His lineup wasn't even straight and it looked no different than when he walked in. Literally looks like he just snipped the ends and called it a day. When I asked him if he could fix it he said he didn't have time lol. I still left a tip but really shouldn't have. If you're a parent trying to bring your lil one, I don't recommend. My son(Lucas) and boyfriend (Anthony) get their cuts here. They have tried i believe every barber and so far no complaints. Lately, Justin has cut both of their hairs and I've yet to hear complaints! I don't know why it took so long for me to give them a review, but better late than never! I have been taking my 2 sons here for over 6 years now. Todd is the absolute BEST. I starting bringing my now 9 year old to him just shy of being 3. At that age, my son was a tough toddler to buckle down for a haircut but it didn't phase Todd the slightest. He treats them like little men, converses, cracks jokes and asks for updates on their school/extra curricular's. My sons see him as a friend and enjoy going to get their haircuts. Had to get a fresh cut and since I was already in uptown Whittier I thought I would give this place a shot. I liked the cool vibe at this place. There's a vintage neon barber shop sign inside and lots of half full/empty liquor bottles on top of the cabinets. There are two long wooden benches inside to sit on that look like they came out of a church. I liked the checkered black and white floor in there. Very retro looking. All the guys in here seem cool and I could tell there is a good camaraderie between them. I didn't get the name of the guy who buzzed me up but he was cool and did a great job. I will definitely come back. The only thing keeping this place from being a 5-star was because they were playing some hip hop music with F-bomb after F-bomb. I personally listen to this music myself but I felt that this wasn't the place for it. There was an older gentleman sitting on the bench who didn't seem to be enjoying it. Also, what if someone walked in with their kids as those lyrics were blasting? I felt uncomfortable and it's not even my business. read more

After reading other yelp reviews, I was a little hesitant to try out this barber shop. But I figured what the hell, I'll give them a try. As I entered the barber shop, the two stylists looked at me, kind of "can we help you?", but not in a welcoming way. I asked if they took walk ins. They said yes, within 5 minutes I was in the chair. I explained how I wanted my cut. The same way I've explained to many other cutters. I didn't get what I expected. But I put the onus on me...maybe I didn't explain it right. The problem with my cut is one side is shorter than the other. That's just a sign of a bad cut and that's on them. During the cross chatter, one of the stylist was talking to the other one. He was commenting on the Yelp reviews about them been asses. He was proud about the perception of their bad attitudes towards customers. So, if you are looking a decent barber shop, I would avoid this place. I don't plan on coming back. read more

Uptown Barbers, a gentlemen's barbershop in an alley in uptown Whittier, is a relaxed, casual establishment with every inch of professionalism required to design, in my three-trip experience, flawless haircuts. With slow, meticulous service punctuated by lively conversation, these barbers satisfy needs and wants with ease and friendship, for a fairly indulgent price range that is worth the investment. I came here for haircuts with fairly complicated line designs, and I was very pleased. Each barber's station is fully equipped, and so is each barber. Not every one of them is capable of line designs, and they will readily admit it so that you can get the best haircut. Manny and Justin, the two barbers I've had, are very precise in every aspect of the cut. This makes them fairly slow, and a haircut can take up to an hour, but each second of care is worth it. There are up to seven barbers working at any given moment, but some of them take appointments and some of them take walk-ins. On account of their protracted diligence, one walking in must wait a while unless he arrives before they open up--people start lining up at 7:45! Appointments, however, are very easy to make by phone, as long as you make them at least a couple days before. Plan your time with this place--whether days beforehand or with up to three or four hours set aside in your day. The long waits are made completely bearable by the friendly atmosphere. They are happy to talk (and probably want to in order to reduce their own monotony), and both barbers and customers will talk across the medium-sized room. Unfortunately, their music is unfiltered and occasionally bawdy, and their mouths are casually foul but never risque (in my experience). If you're going for a line-up, Justin and Manny are your best bets. Manny is good if you don't want something very complicated, but for the most complex designs you'll want to schedule with Justin, who goes all-out. He spent over an hour on me for my last haircut, even though I was a walk-in, and the resulting design (which I'll post with pictures) was filled with subtleties that he casually, almost passingly described but contributed heavily to the final product. He went above and beyond what I asked, but always checked with me before he did so. read more

Someone else comes in to the shop, which I can assume had an appointment since they take him ahead of me even though it was mentioned only one was ahead of me. There's about 3 barbers and 2 of them get a new client. I'm waiting there for the one that told me I was next to finish up his since he was the one to tell me I was next. When the hour was up and he was done with "the one ahead of me," he took another person.
