I've shopped here for a few years now and I love this shop! I feel like it's one of the better priced resale shops. They have a large variety of clothing from vintage (the kind you actually want to buy) to new with tags Nordstrom and other higher end brands (also for a good price) I've brought most of my friends here to shop and even my best friends siblings! It's always a clean and welcoming environment! Plus they have special sale days/tags/events that you can be notified about just by becoming an insider! This place reeks like cheap perfume. Not a subtle bit in the background, but an overpowering, smell-it-outside kind of punch in the face. This store is filled with off brands, tired clothing, and cheapy, plastic jewelry, all crunched in together so tightly that you can't move the hangers around. When I didn't have 5 seasonal items for Moss, they sent me down here, and I honestly cannot figure out why. It's on par with a downscale Plato's Closet and several steps down from Buffalo Exchange, where you're much more likely to catch a mid-range designer brand here and there. I think Austin is really lacking a consignment store that is careful about what it accepts and is in between super high end and really shitty. I would classify this place as a thrift store, as far as what you can expect quality-wise, and it's not even all that inexpensive considering. read more

Fast service for sellers, great prices for buyers. I didn't feel cheated today after selling clothes, they took half my basket and gave me a very reasonable price for the items they took. I wish Uptown Cheapskate was less selective with their buying processes. It's obvious they focus more on brands, department store tags and well, personal preferences as opposed to objectively buying sellable clothes. If you're wondering whether or not you should drive down lamar and sell your clothes and you're a dude, skip it. It's not for you (unless you're selling a bomber jacket or some v-neck tanks or anything from GUESS you bought within the last month--that's all they stock). But I get it, their looking for vintage sh*t. Obviously, you gotta be selective. But is it worth the $50+ markup their selling it for when it's finally on the rack? I don't think so. Actually, HELL NO WTF! $50 for some washed up J's? I'm good. There are some really cool items, but few 'great finds' if any "finds" unless you know what you're looking for before you walk in. Most of the store for men is filled with a lot of the same items and too many size 12 shoes. You can find better deals at Kohl's, really. Couldn't say the same for the women's side of the store, I'm sure it's great. Back to selling for men--don't. I took one tote bag full of adequate clothes (i.e. a couple of dress shirts and some nike tees) to cheapskate last week to sell. I got nothing. No surprise. There weren't any concert tees or pants from everlane, of course! I took the same bag to Plato's closet and got $7.95 for three shirts (the same shirts I took to uptown). Sweet! In the end, don't get pissed if they don't buy your clothes, your last year's style just sucks so take them somewhere else. Bottom line, this is a boutique, vintage store. Rarely will you find anything actually vintage, but never will you find anything that's actually a good deal from what the price tag reads. It's always right on the edge of that tipping point from being too expensive/you could get it new for the same price. They probably forget these clothes are used! read more

This store has some very cool pieces of vintage clothes. I like to go there and grab some casual oversized tees, or something I can find last minute to wear to a concert or party. Great store overall. However, I wish they carry more high waisted mom jeans in my size (W24). I was never able to buy any jeans or shorts, unfortunately. read more

I actually like this place. It's definitely a step up from Savers. I'm not saying anything bad about Savers because it's one of my favorite thrift stores to go to in Austin. If I want to find something more high end on the thrift store ranks this would be it. Uptown would be on the same line as Buffalo Exchange. I like the selection they have and I ended up buying a bunch of nice clothes for work. I found 2 St. Johns blouses for just $25 each. It is nicely organized and the salespeople are nice and laid back too. The only thing I wish they had more plus size clothing. read more

First experience selling my clothes to resale shop today. I had one bag of dresses and tops and another with shoes. I went in early afternoon and it was not too busy-just one person with a bag of clothes to evaluate before mine. I was told it would be about 45 minutes and since it was my first time they recommended I wait in the store. The store has PLENTY of merchandise and it appears well organized. Primarily women's apparel but there is a men's section. (All apparel thoough, no home goods or anything). Price point was a bit higher than I expected but the quality was pretty good. I got bored wandering around after 5 minutes (I actually hate clothes shopping), wish they had some seating area if they prefer people stay. After a bit over an hour they called my name and called my number (glad they reached out once they were done, unlike other places) UC offered $25 cash (or ~$36 store credit) for about 4 brand new dresses and one pair of strappy heels. I was expecting slightly more, and they didnt actually explain how they arrived at their pricing or even why they picked certain items. So I'm not really sure why they wanted me to stay in the store (to entice me to shop, maybe)? Anyway, this place was okay as a seller. I took the rejected clothes back (left the shoes to donate) and will try another business for the rest. read more

Best re-sale shop I've ever been to. They have a wide selection of women's clothing. From designer Gucci, to Forever 21, to vintage you are bound to find something you like. They carry a good section of men's clothing and shoes. The customer service is exceptional, everyone there seems to love what they are doing and want to help you find something great. As far as trade-ins they will purchase items in good condition. If you take store credit vs cash you get 25% more back. Oh another great thing about Uptown Cheapskate is the location. This store has helped me get into thrift shopping. There are always lots of people working there who are helpful and friendly, which I appreciate. The layout is thoughtfully organized, and I love the color coding of shirts! I am not the type of person who loves to go through a million items, so I actually like the smaller size and inventory. You can manage going through the racks you like in a single visit without feeling overwhelmed. I usually manage to find something unique and appealing to me whenever I go. Price points are pretty fair. I typically spend between $5-15 per item (I don't shop the vintage or designer racks). Be prepared to wait if you're selling on the weekend. Better to go in on a week-day when there's less traffic. They are pretty particular on what they accept, but they do offer to donate whatever they don't buy to charity (Purple Heart Foundation). read more

Pretty good for a thrift store I've only sold here not shopped. I've looked around though they do have good items here for a thrift store! The store isn't as disorganized as other second hand places, which I like! They make the selling process easy you either can stay with the clothes or drop them off and come back the next day to get your pay out. Docked one star because their payout isn't super high. It's easier though then selling on Posh. I took in 20 items they only accepted 7, and I got paid $17. Most of the stuff I brought in were good brands too like loft or anthropologie so I was expected slightly higher payout. Friendly staff though! Much better experience selling here then other second hand stores in town! Whenever I talk to friends about uptown they always say "oh yeah I love that place"! read more

I think this place is in between a Buffalo Exchange and a GoodWill. In terms of clothes, there's a good amount of nicer brands like J Crew and brands from GAP and Forever 21. There's also a small vintage section in the back. When my friend and I walked in we asked if they were still buying clothes and they was, there was just a long line before us. We went to Half Price Books & Torchy's and then I got a call and email that my clothes are finished. All in all it took a very short amount of time and they took a majority of my items woo hoo. read more

Man, Uptown Cheapskate used to be my JAM. I came here all the time when I lived in Austin a year ago and always walked out with a great deal or a unique new piece to add to my closet. I liked it so much that when my fiance and I were back in town visiting his family for Easter, I made sure we hit up my favorite consignment shop. I don't know what Uptown Cheapskate is doing differently, but their stock has changed dramatically. Instead of brand names, there's a ton of Mossimo (Target's flagship brand) and more than a few items with the tags ripped out. Instead of loved but good condition clothing/shoes, I saw a few pairs of leather boots with very scuffed toes and some clothing with obvious holes. And the unique, retro style that I used to love has been replaced with a lot more club attire with holes in weird and uncomfortable places. I did find a few dresses there that I liked and the girl in the changing rooms was so helpful in bringing me new stuff to try on. Without her, I almost definitely would've walked out empty handed. I might be back next time I'm in town, but I think I'm ready to move on from my old love and find a new Austin thrifting favorite. read more

I must say I was definitely disappointed with the way my sale was handled. It was my first time bringing stuff here to sell. I had 5 huge trash bags of clothing, 90% name brand, and 2 large bags of shoes, and after about 15 minutes waiting in the store my name was called. Needless to say all they bought were 3 pairs of shoes. I know they didn't go through the bags of clothes. When I opened the bags, the clothing in the middle and at the bottom of the bag were still in tact the way I had folded them. I've never purchased clothing at this place so my rating is completely based off of my selling experience there. read more

What a great little store! I was extremely impressed with the "boutique" feel of this thrift shop which is definitely not your typical, stinky store. While you won't find $1 bargains here, you you'll also be spared the drudgery of digging through bins and the unpleasantness of foul odors. I'd recommend this store for Junior sizes in particular, as I saw numerous cute dresses in those sizes. I'll cruise by iccasionally, in the hopes of finding a designer bargain for $7-8 ! I love the selection, I love the location, and I love the prices, but I'm knocking off a star because I really don't know if the clothes get a wash between being purchased by the store and being put on the rack. Ordinarily I would wash any resale items but I was so excited about the pants I bought today I put them on right away. Then I started noticing a smell... a weird smell... an unwashed-vagina smell. I'm alone right now but I was mortified and I checked my own girl parts (which are as fresh as the spring time morning) and then I took the pants off and realized that they were the source of the 3rd day tuna stench. I just want to start off saying that I have been going here for years ever since I was in college (so around 4 years), and I have shopped here numerous times and sold my clothes here a good number as well. But yesterday's experience was incredibly rude and unlike anything I've experienced coming here. I'm usually not one to write negative reviews, but this was just uncalled for and inaccurate. Last night my fiancé and I were in a rush to dinner plans since we made reservations to celebrate my new job. Given we were in rush, I insisted we had enough time to just quickly drop off clothes and shoes I wanted to sell at Uptown since we were close by. The plan was always not to stick around, but do a drop off since their policy says you can drop off your items at ANY TIME. It was already around 5:50pm, and we were cutting it close. So I approach the counter to do my usual drop off, greeting a sales rep with colorful hair (didn't catch her name). I was told to wait around for 20 minutes, and I said "Unfortunately I can't. My fiancé and I have reservations". What then proceeded was unexpected and uncalled for. The sales rep said in a very annoyed tone "All you have to do is wait around here for 20 minutes. That is not a long time". She looked exasperated and stared at me with annoyance. I shook my head, confused by the frustration and passive aggressiveness, and said "No, we really can't wait here. We have dinner plans and will be late." The sales rep proceeded to say "Well then we usually don't do same day buys since it's so late." It was 5:50pm, and according to their website policy, they continue to buy UNTIL TWO HOURS BEFORE THEY CLOSE (which is 7pm on a Friday and it was only 5:50pm at this point). She continued to make passive aggressive comments, repeating twice "We don't do same day buys at this point since it's so late, so we will see if I can even get to yours." All I said quietly was "Okay" because I wanted this exchange to be over. Before I signed my receipt for drop off, she had to remind me as a turned to leave "We will see if I can even get to yours." Look, I was not expecting to have a same day buy. I really was not pushing for one at all, nor did I care. I just wanted to drop off my items and leave the store in peace since I was truly in a rush, and I have done drop off multiple times. But you do not need to be passive aggressive towards customers who are selling their items to you and have to drop off when they have plans. Either update your store policy if it has changed (because according to your site it says you buy until 7pm, and when I got there it was clearly way before that), or have your sales rep not expressive such passive aggressive attitude just because I "cannot wait only 20 minutes" in store. First of all, your policy says "We always accept drop offs (up to the equivalent of two 30-gallon trash bags) for next-day processing at any time", so what is with the attitude when I was just dropping off clothes and not pushing for a same day buy? I even said that it is okay I won't get a same day buy offer but I continued to get unnecessary passive aggressive attitude. I loved going here, but I am thoroughly disappointed in my experience. I was enjoying some insanely amazing queso at Torchy's on South Lamar with an adorable friend when I spied Uptown Cheapskate just across the parking lot. Hopped onto Yelp to see what it might be and hey! a new-to-me consignment shop. Well yippee! They had a wide selection, everything was well organized and pretty much on-trend, the clothes were clean, nothing smelled weird, the store was large and brightly lit, and the prices were good for the labels. My friend got a gorge wide-brimmed boho BCBG hat for $15. It's a three-season accessory and looks crazy good. I wish I didn't have a tiny little head or I would totally steal it from her. read more

Overall this is a really good second hand store but the reason for the lower stars is because their buying policies weren't particularly clear. I'm actually understanding more from the other reviews on Yelp than when I was in store. I believe the buyers have a set quota that they buy per day or a certain amount of money they payout? When i called to find out if they were buying, I was told there was a line and I should come in another day. I confirmed when they opened and brought in my clothes the next day. When I arrived at 11:15am, there were already several buys ahead of me and that it would be a 1-2 hour wait. I filled out the forms but still wasn't told about this unspoken "quota" I'm reading on Yelp. I decided I was going to shop around and get lunch. Unfortunately I didn't find any clothes that I thought were worth while but I did notice that most of the clothes were in fairly good condition (with lots of variety!), including the shoes. After about 3-3.5 hours later I got a call and I was able to pick up what they didn't buy. I would come back to browse and sell again but I would call ahead to find out if they are buying clothes OR arrive first this when they open. read more

I personally think they have a great selection of clothes, shoes, and accessories. All is fair priced and I love the markdowns they do on the tags. You have to search but you can find little gems here. It's very clean and organized and doesn't smell like a "used" store. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Only reason I have four stars Is because they only took 5 items out of my two huge bins and didn't give me a reason as to why. I have very trendy clothing so it was a little weird that they didn't take more items. Either way, it's one of those stores that you have to pick through the clothing but just might find something cute. read more

I frequently sell my clothes consignment to several shops around Austin, and have always done well in the money I get back for the quality that I sell to them. I'd been referred to Uptown Cheapskate by a few friends, and after my second attempt, it's safe to say I will never be buying/selling there ever again. After a dissatisfying first experience, I decided to give them one more shot. I dropped a bag of stuff off at 6pm on a Thursday (normally they stop buying at 7pm and close at 8pm that day), and was told that they had stopped buying for the day. I was a little bothered, but as someone who works in retail/customer service, I understand that sometimes these things occur and are beyond control of the associates. I asked when my items would be ready the next day and agreed to leave my items. I was told I was third in line for when buying began the next morning. By 2:30pm the next day, I'd still not received a call. I called to check in, and my items had yet to be assessed. Patiently, I asked if they could estimate when the items could be ready. I was working until after their store would be closed but was willing to drive out there on my work break. They said they'd call when it was ready. At 5pm, I'd still received no call, but was on my break and stopped by in hopes that maybe they'd forgotten to call me. I saw my items on the counter with a piece of paper attached and was relieved they were finally done. It took 15 minutes before an associate assisted me- no one even acknowledged me or said if they were busy and would get to me when they could- several associates stood around the registers talking. When I was finally helped, I was told my items had STILL not been assessed by the buyer... Nearly 24 hours after dropping them. The associate expressed a computer error that had been taking buys longer than normal throughout the day. They offered for the buyer to look at them as soon as she got back from break, but by this point I was fed up and asked for my items back. What put me over the edge was when the associate proceeded to roll up the articles of clothing, including designer silks and other sensitive materials that I'd taken the time and care to steam and dry clean prior to dropping them. Now, not only has it been two days without any sight of payment for my clothes, but now I'll have to take more time to iron/steam them yet again before they're ready to be taken to another consignment shop. I work in customer service, so again, I'm understanding to mishaps, or sometimes situations that are beyond the employees control, but my experiences were beyond disappointing. I won't be shopping/selling here again, and I've told my friends and coworkers they're better off doing the same. read more

I love this place! I stumbled upon this cute shop after I was having breakfast at Kerbey Lane. I have been back several times since and I always find something I just have to have. Staff is really nice and helpful, they always come by and ask if I want them to hold/start a dressing room. Great selection of items and reasonably priced! I recently sold stuff too, it was easy and quick. I am really happy I found this place. I'm a male and the male section is really small but it's like that in literally every single clothing store. I love how organized this place is. By size, then by color, then by cut it makes looking for things so easy. The people that work the front are pretty helpful, some of the girls that work there were trying on clothes and were giving advice and compliments out to the customers. It smelled clean and it was as tidy as you could expect a place like this to be. They only had one bathroom but the bathroom was clean and well lit. I haven't used to selling option so I can't speak to that but they have lots of deals, and lots of good clothes for girls. read more

Al the name brands at fair prices. The only reason I'm taking a star off is because their lighting is too dim. If your vision isn't 100% perfect you may struggle. Also the store is super tiny compared to other 2nd hand stores, so that means the clothes is all bundled together and you can't really examine each article without taking it off the rack. read more

Girlfriend and I went in to check out what this place had. We both actually really liked the spot, it had a good range of clothes at fair prices in our opinion. From the get-go she and I were grabbing some things and holding them to try on or just instantly buy. It snowed today... we both had coats on... so I get the need to maybe monitor people that come into the store (we were maybe 1 of 4 other shoppers in there), but I also know when Im being treated in a certain manner. Either way... kept shopping, made it to the back of the store where we were looking at boots and shorts. That's when an employee came over and asked if she could help us. "no thanks all good". But it was the way she asked and the way she looked at the clothes on my arm that made me question her motives - I dont want to jump to conclusions... all good, we kept shopping. Wait?... theres also another employee now sitting watching us in the back corner of the store as we shop? Nah... just a staff training day or something... Im being paranoid... Now I understand the need to protect your assets; as the business owner of a well-to-do technology company, I have to do this with my teams and clients as well... but you should also be aware of how offensive it can be to repeatedly be asked if you need help while the owner of the shop gives the same employee tips on how to prevent theft within earshot of you standing at the dressing rooms. Weather it was about me or not doesnt matter if I get the feeling it is, and then verify that feeling with my partner in the car. At one point while I was standing there I put my hands in my pockets while standing by our things while my girlfriend is trying on clothes and I am asked again by the same employee if everything is okay... "ya... fine." After spending $300 in used clothes I felt a bit stupid for not having said something about it, but figured I was just being paranoid. I left it alone... but as soon as we got in the car I brought it up to my girlfriend and she agreed that she felt the same way... we even had the same ideas of where she and I both felt like we were being watched more than helped. I really didn't want to leave this review but the more we talk about it the more we felt we were strongly being profiled. I didn't see any of the other hip kids in the building getting the same treatment... meanwhile my girlfriend and I (interracial couple) felt uncomfortable. Again, the clothes were actually a good buy, another employee who helped my girlfriend try on a fur coat (which we bought) was super friendly and helpful (we actually really liked her, she was sweet), and overall the experience would have been great... but that mutual feeling we got about these circumstances left us feeling dirty and disappointed in everything overall - hence the review. Saw a lot of staff complaints and figure I'd add one as well since it's obviously not a one-off, and through deductive reasoning have figured out this is not us being paranoid - it's us being treated in a manner that we don't care for. I LOVE THIS STORE!!! I wear large/extra large clothes and size 10 shoes and it can be hard to find a good selection sometimes. But this store had enough good selection for me that I actually had to put some stuff back by the end because I was spending too much money! Haha. I love the little vintage section in the back. They also have lots of accessories. Everyone who works there has been very nice and helpful to me. And the discount program is pretty cool! I've already gotten quite a few stamps, and I'm pretty excited for next month (my birthday month) when I get an extra 15% off my purchases for the whole month. Occasionally you'll pick up a pair of $85 shoes, but most stuff is pretty affordable. Everything seems to be priced fairly according to brand, quality, etc. This is definitely my new favorite store as I plan on going back ASAP :) read more

This is by far the best resale store in town! Others stock tons of junk and I have to pick through the racks. Uptown Cheapskate has quality clothing that is clean and well organized and the people who work there give me an honest opinion re: how things look on me, they're not just out to make another sale! A couple of months ago I lost some weight and traded in all my old clothes for great new ones and barely spent anything! I was back in last week looking for new workout clothes and they were having a buy one get one half price sale so I got six new to me (and no one would ever guess they were used) running shorts and exercise bras! I'm an avid resale shopper.. and i absolutely LOVE this store. the employees are really friendly and the store is CLEAN. They always have a great selection, and the prices are perfect for my budget.
