I went into Uptown Cheapskate on a whim a few months ago and I fell in love. It was an extremely pleasant surprise to walk into a "second hand" store and not FEEL like I was in a second hand store. You can tell immediately that the staff pay close attention to the ambiance and general appearance of the store, down to the dressing rooms. Everything is very reasonably priced and I always walk out with a few new gems to add to my wardrobe. I haven't tried selling any clothes yet, so I can't comment on that side of things, but as a seasoned second hand shopper this place is hard to beat. I showed up apparently after hours and am thankful to the girl who let me in anyways to try to shop. Didn't like hearing one of the girs say "omg who cares we've been closed for an hour and five mins". Not polite on her part. I was just going by the times that show up when you search for a place on maps it showed I had an hour to shop. No negative things though. Immediately after my original post, I was contacted by not one but two managers offering to personally provide me with a better experience. I was impressed that they were so concerned with customer satisfaction and, always a believer in 2nd chances (sometimes more), decided to go back for a 3rd time that week. They definitely made up for the hassle I went through earlier...Christina looked at my buy right away and offered me an additional credit. I'll most definitely be back again. read more

I like this place for a few reasons: -they are relatively friendly and offer solid customer service -I think their buy prices are fair -they take walk-ins, no appointment needed What they need to address: -they publish their buy times on the website but it is not consistent with when they actually take buys. I've walked in multiple times within the published window and they "are no longer taking buys." One time they shut down the whole weekend (tax free weekend) without communication. I understand that sometimes you get an influx of inventory, but if that's going to impact whether you take walk-in buys y'all need to post that somewhere. Facebook? Something. It's happened to me too many times and I'd assume I'm not the only one. read more

This store has the most amazing clothes ever! I am a little addicted. I would absolutely give them 5 stars if it weren't for having had issues with the staff, some of whom are apathetic and seemingly inexperienced in customer service. I was here today and they have a system where you have to enter your phone number into a computer in order for your rewards and points to register. Apparently, if you enter your number and click "redeem now" the discount doesn't automatically go through, you have to tell the cashier. They do not make this clear at all so just in case you go make sure you let them know! I put in my discount on the computer but it didn't go through. They told me that the rewards I had earned were gone as a result and there was nothing they could do about it because it was my fault that I didn't tell them. I pressed them and they eventually gave me a coupon for my next visit but they absolutely wouldn't have done this if I hadn't been assertive with them. I could tell the cashier felt inconvenienced because there was only one register open and when the cashier asked another girl to start ringing people out on the other one because the line was backed up she rolled her eyes and proceeded to do nothing. They should be more organized and clear with customers regarding how their system works. If a customer earns money through rewards you can't just tell them it's gone and there is nothing you can do about it. I will be back though because of the unique styles and good prices! I came in today to sell some things to the store. I came in with over 100 items and they only took 14. That's fine I suppose, however, they gave me back things from name brands and some really nice, new winter clothing. They told me "We only accept things we know will sell well in our store." So leather jackets and expensive jeans don't sell well? On top of all that, they paid me $35 for 14 items. Thats $2.50 an item, which I know they will sell for 5-10x what they paid for them, plus the items they took were $20+. I've sold to them before and been paid reasonable amounts but this isn't acceptable. I absolutely will Never sell to Uptown again, and I'm honestly so turned off by this experience that I probably won't be shopping there again. Don't worry though! I'll make sure all of my friends are aware that they rip off their sellers so that they can make exponential profits :) read more

I gave up writing negative reviews a while ago. I would review myself a bit negatively for continuing to write reviews on Yelp, which is a depressing habit, even if you've resolved to write exclusively positive reviews. But I just visited this place for the first time, and then I read the reviews here and think that Melissa B. and Jerry S. and Larry and Terence and whoever else who wrote so negatively should perhaps take a NyQuil at noontime before they return: this place is perfectly pleasant. Let me say briefly that I hate shopping for clothes. I don't know why, but I can't get in & out quickly enough. I suppose I'd be a candidate for one of those mailorder Blue Apron For Clothing services that save pathetic people from having to dress themselves, but I haven't fallen off that far yet, I mean from having any self-respect. ....Sorry: this isn't a diary entry. But for some reason I felt like going clothes shopping today ... it was raining out, I'd had a nice dinner, etc. which is just swell, and good for me. So I went in and found a summer jacket which is a nice jacket but on my shoulders looks like something you'd get at Tommy Bahama, but so what? I might actually wear it. --I did find a truly nice ( I still think so ) shirt, too. Anyhow, enough of this. The staff are friendly and funny. The girl behind the counter seemed like the kind of person who probably never reads Yelp and if she doesn't like a place of business doesn't get offended by it, and what I am saying is that today I was genuinely glad I went clothes shopping for once. That's pretty good. What observations are you supposed to make? Nothing smelled like old clothes, even though there were a lot of clothes behind the counter, etc. Now to the real meat of my so-called review. You need to pay Jackson K. more. He's the staff person who responds to your withering assessments of his place of business. Having worked in smb management and hospitality and customer service myself, he is a master of the Business Yelp Reply. He numbers his points, and not for show or to intimidate, but to honestly and clearly delineate his counter-arguments. He covers every aspect of a customer's evaluation but without being garrulous or boorish or overly defensive. This is someone who could teach a class to others in his role elsewhere, at local seminars or touring. If you're a casual reviewer who like William Barr says (current events nod) gets easily "snitty" in your judgment of local businesses like this one who clearly have a staff that work hard keeping the place clean and welcoming you should prepare yourself not to be "ripped apart" by an insane business owner but cooly dissected or rather have your perspective deconstructed in a fair but firm fashion, -- which Yelp could use more of. --And which leaves my surprise doubled in that I was happy to have visited a clothing store and then glad to have visited these Yelp opinions. Unfortunately, having written this idiotic nonsense I will, like so many crappy-attitude-having reviewers but for opposite reasons "never come back here again." read more

Only been one time but it was a 5 star experience. Needed a blazer for a wedding and had zero luck at a couple of department stores. Came here and the first one I tried on fit. And was 6 dollars as opposed to minimum 60 at various other places. Looked new. They were super nice and helpful and it looked like they had a bunch of mens options. Will be back soon. read more

This place is terrible! I took my clothes there yesterday to sell some of them. I knew they wouldn't take them all, but I figured they would take at least a couple items. They told me that they weren't their "style" and not what "they were looking for". I know for a fact there were "spring" items. I look in the box I brought, THEY DIDN'T EVEN LOOK IN IT! People are so nice here. The clothing is more fashionable than the buffalo exchange. Everyone is so welcoming and found the things I needed. Plus I got to sell some items, which was nice. Didn't once feel uncomfortable. You get a 10% discount when you first come in. You also get free hangers with a purchase. Would recommend! read more

I actually went out of my way to go to this store because of the reviews. What a disappointment. You ever feel like you enter a place and are immediately judged? This place. After about a 30 minute wait, they only chose my dirty old converse shoes. Didn't offer any options for the rest of my basket, not even a donation option. I took my basket to a different consignment store and they bought many of my items. Will never return to this store. It's almost a try too hard vibe going into the store. I find that Uptown Cheapskate is a wonderful place to shop! I recently walked around downtown Austin naked, screaming from the top of my lungs about God and lightning to anybody who would listen about this awesome store. Hehe, jk. A couple respectable reasons why I like shopping here: 1. Its next to the dog-drop off, Torchy's, & Kerbey Lane!! 2. I think its wonderful that I can drop off clothes that I was already going to goodwill, and they will give me cash/credit for it! Then I can exchange things and try new things. They even take perfumes and accessories! (Pretty cool) The selection is very fun to go through and prices are reasonable-- the clearance mark-downs are awesome. I buy everything at clearance markdown :-) 2. Its awesome that I get to leave all the rest of the unwanted merchandise. I don't have to make a second stop at goodwill. I feel good that it's hopefully going to a great cause. Thanks for making my life so easy! 3. I've told everyone where I've gotten my cool new items, or gently used (new to me) items. And everyone wants to come visit. I think the customer service is great, I like how they ask me if I need a room so I don't have to tote around 16 heavy hangers. (Very boutique-like). 4. I came here about 3 times and the clothes are really intresting and different I like them a lot , but what makes me sad is that sometimes it's really pricy I mean for a thrift store I would expect it to be cheaper u know? But like 15$ on a shirt ? I might as well buy it New . Or like 20$ on pants, same thing . The yelp dollar signs say 1 as in , not expensive but trust me it is , I looked under some shoes and they were like 80$ ! I might as well go buy a new pair . This is such a great shop! I first started going there a few years ago when I came to visit Austin and brought the wrong season clothes, and It was too early for the stores to carry what I needed. I found everything! My favorite shirt (which I'm wearing now) was $1.60!! Every time I visit, one of my first stops is Uptown Cheapskate! I went there today and got a perfect dress for a wedding ($9) . Arianna was fantastic! She helped me and went way beyond the call of duty! She was so professional and really helped! Everyone there is so wonderful! My only issue is that they have to take "young adult" off of their website as their customer. So the first time I went into Uptown Cheapskate, a woman brought in 10 suitcases full of clothing! The grace and professionalism of buyer's Chad and Inez was outstanding. I was quite impressed was not only the quality of the items that were in the store for sale but the excellent prices I got for the items that I brought into the store. I specifically want to call out Chad as an exceptional buyer as well as Charming and professional young man with an absolutely fantastic eye for fashion and what is trendy in in style. I'm no stranger to consignment shopping and shopping at this Uptown location is a must anytime I'm in the area. All consignment stores can be hit or miss when it comes to their ever-changing inventory, but I hit at this store more often than I miss. Simply put, I look forward to shopping here. When it comes to their buying process, I find it to be very fair. To sellers dissatisfied with their experience, let me say that having name brand merchandise does not mean the items are fashionable, currently trending or cater to this store's particular shopping demographic. I prefer stores that are more discerning when selecting inventory, which usually translates into a fulfilling shopping experience for me. When it comes to the staff, I'm on a first name basis with a few folks and they always welcome me with a smile! I've also chatted with the owner of this location. When I recently mentioned that I may be moving, he generously offered me some shopping options to ensure that I could still enjoy the UC experience since I'm a well established client. Lots to choose from, great place for "retail therapy". I have bought and sold here. Both experiences were great. I had lots of help from friendly staff. I love the way the way it is arranged by size so this is soooooo much better than a thrift store that is organized by color/style. Best part about selling here is that you get your money right away or you can take a credit (which is what I usually do and you get even more that way!) If they are busy, you can drop it off and come back later. If they don't take it, they will donate it for you to a reputable charity (not like Goodwil, which throws unsold items in landfills!!). Best part about shopping here is the organization, lots of dressing rooms, lots of current styles to choose from and of course the affordable prices! It's not nearly as crowded as some of the other resale stores in ATX either, so you aren't bumping into other shoppers or accidentally dropping clothes off the hangers because it's too tight on the racks. I LOVE this place and go sell your clothes here, so I can come buy them cheap! hehehe read more

My response below may be a little confusing, as it was a response to her ORIGINAL response, which she just changed today. Update 2/5/2016- She changed her response again. I'm not going to really address it, but it's different than what she edited her response to be on 2/1, and she spun the situation to make it seem like I made a scene, which I didn't at all. Seriously, I would never raise my voice in a store over something like this. Plus, she wasn't even physically there to witness what happened. This is 3 months after the fact, so to avoid anymore pointless conversation, I'll leave it at that. 2/7/16 She edited it again and I haven't read it. ---- (This is my response to the owner's response. Read my original review below for context) I'm not attacking you or your staff. I'm explaining a disappointing experience exactly as it happened - from my perspective - and leaving the reader to come to their own conclusions. First off - where in my Yelp review did I say that I was unaware that this was a charity event? I knew that the event was benefiting a charity, but was not aware that 100% of the proceeds would go straight the charity, and I was not aware that the money was not going through the store's hands first. To answer your question, I would NOT ask the American Red Cross for a refund if I agreed to make a donation. But I would ask Goodwill, a charitable organization, for a refund for clothes I did not like. Once again, I knew your event was tied in with a charity, but I did not know to what extent. I commend the store for holding an event like this, but to embarrass a person because they choose not to participate after receiving more details (i.e.: ratty clothes **in MY opinion**, and not within my current budget to just give), and then go back on your word that you'd give said customer a refund, is just rude. Once again, it is not your place to judge why I did not want to participate - you do not know my intentions, which charities I already donate to, or my financial situation. And I did not just "leave" the store and return days later randomly. I ASKED first if it was okay that I return with my receipt at a later date, because I was making my sister late for work. I even had an employee sign my receipt to say that I was approved to return at a later date. Alice explicitly told me that I would get my money back. This was all discussed before I stepped foot out of the store door, and my money could have been retrieved and set aside at that point before "the envelope was sealed". Yes, I returned to your shop last night to use the $5 coupons that Alice gave me - what other choice did I have? ONLY after I shopped for 30-45 minutes, tried on clothing, picked my items, and totally completed the transaction with the coupons, did Alice try to hand me $15 in cash! I politely declined. Why would I take the clothes PLUS the cash refund at that point? I already went through the hassle of getting over the incident and shopping. Once again, it's NOT all about the money. It's about the experience. I'm pretty sure your hope was that I WOULD take the money and the coupon-purchased clothes, so that you could attempt to demean my character on Yelp, more than you already have, of course. And I'm also pretty darn sure the money was only offered after you read my review.. Because you still don't see where you guys went wrong. Asking for a refund to not participate in a charity event, and then being upset after being lied to (and receiving no real apology for it.. which really rattled me).. that IS defensible. Even after reading my review and my side.. I'm not sure how you don't see the logic in this. The fact is, this could have been handled much better on many levels and at many moments by you and your staff. But this is what Yelp is for.
