Update: Thank you Craig for giving me a call and understanding that good customer service is all it takes for people to have a good experience. It shouldn't have to be taken up by management to please their customers. You should always be cheerful and go out of your way to make sure your customers leave happy or at least pretend to care instead of just neglecting a solution upfront. Something so small shouldn't be a challenge to make sure of that. Anyways, I will continue to shop here because their inventory is awesome and their management made sure I continue to be a loyal shopper! Old post below: Cool place to shop. My reasoning for the two star review would be because two complaints. My first time shopping here was in March. They signed me up for a stamp program which they give you one stamp for every $10 you spend and once you get all the boxes stamped they give you a discount. I got my receipt with a total of $70 before tax and noticed when I got home I only got 6 stamps. No biggie, thought I could just let them know next time I went in. Well I went in this last Sunday and I let the cashier know that I was missing one stamp and showed them my receipt. They would not give me ONE stamp because it had been more than a month since the transaction and "we don't know if that's what happened" was their excuse. Don't know why I would lie about a stamp but ok... "If it had been yesterday we could of stamped it. I didn't know math had an expiration date. I mean I had the receipt as proof. Whatever I let it go and continued shopping. Second complaint is: they had a sale for "fitness apparel" buy one get one half off which was advertised in their fitting room with a picture of maybe a shirt or jogging track pants and a pair of shoes. When I got to the registered (I had a pair of addida pants and Nike shoes) they told me it's only for clothing. I've worked retail before, so my advise would be not to picture something that's not part of the deal. read more

I hope everyone reads this post. I have been in store plenty of times, and I feel like they have a little bit of everything for everyone. From cheaper brands to more exclusive labels at way reasonable prices, to items to you wear to themed parties or just to keep Austin weird. Now, I spent quite some time reading everyone's reviews and I just need to say, those negative reviews are solely expressing points of view and no real conflicts. I work retail as well and I understand that every retailer has different policies. Most of the reviews are either petty or personal opinions based on the fact that "you were offered too little for your designer items" (granted any designer collaboration is not real designer clothing ). People should inform theirselves on 1) the policies of the store and no they won't make an exception no matter who you think you are, and 2) as any other store, there is a market. What does this mean, they have a vision of what and who they sell to, and sometimes some clothing just doesn't fit the vision they have for their future clientele which is why they'll refuse to buy a lot of items that no longer fit what they are looking for, or if they're designer items , they're items that could possibly be out of the price range of their typical customer. So don't be offended if they don't take your $3,000 Louis Vuitton bag or your $15 forever 21 top. Also don't expect what you paid for, they clearly tell you their buying policy before you drop off any items, you'll never get what you paid for that's a given. So please before writing a negative review, step back and think before you end up looking like a fool. It's business and just like your closet (that you hand selected items for) they have to do the same for their store. read more

Update 2/1/2016- Today, Lurinda (the owner) edited her original response from being super scathing and rude, to being more pleasant. Good on her! My response below may be a little confusing, as it was a response to her ORIGINAL response, which she just changed today. Update 2/5/2016- She changed her response again. I'm not going to really address it, but it's different than what she edited her response to be on 2/1, and she spun the situation to make it seem like I made a scene, which I didn't at all. Seriously, I would never raise my voice in a store over something like this. Plus, she wasn't even physically there to witness what happened. This is 3 months after the fact, so to avoid anymore pointless conversation, I'll leave it at that. 2/7/16 She edited it again and I haven't read it. ---- (This is my response to the owner's response. Read my original review below for context) I'm not attacking you or your staff. I'm explaining a disappointing experience exactly as it happened - from my perspective - and leaving the reader to come to their own conclusions. First off - where in my Yelp review did I say that I was unaware that this was a charity event? I knew that the event was benefiting a charity, but was not aware that 100% of the proceeds would go straight the charity, and I was not aware that the money was not going through the store's hands first. To answer your question, I would NOT ask the American Red Cross for a refund if I agreed to make a donation. But I would ask Goodwill, a charitable organization, for a refund for clothes I did not like. Once again, I knew your event was tied in with a charity, but I did not know to what extent. I commend the store for holding an event like this, but to embarrass a person because they choose not to participate after receiving more details (i.e.: ratty clothes **in MY opinion**, and not within my current budget to just give), and then go back on your word that you'd give said customer a refund, is just rude. Once again, it is not your place to judge why I did not want to participate - you do not know my intentions, which charities I already donate to, or my financial situation. And I did not just "leave" the store and return days later randomly. I ASKED first if it was okay that I return with my receipt at a later date, because I was making my sister late for work. I even had an employee sign my receipt to say that I was approved to return at a later date. Alice explicitly told me that I would get my money back. This was all discussed before I stepped foot out of the store door, and my money could have been retrieved and set aside at that point before "the envelope was sealed". Yes, I returned to your shop last night to use the $5 coupons that Alice gave me - what other choice did I have? ONLY after I shopped for 30-45 minutes, tried on clothing, picked my items, and totally completed the transaction with the coupons, did Alice try to hand me $15 in cash! I politely declined. Why would I take the clothes PLUS the cash refund at that point? I already went through the hassle of getting over the incident and shopping. Once again, it's NOT all about the money. It's about the experience. I'm pretty sure your hope was that I WOULD take the money and the coupon-purchased clothes, so that you could attempt to demean my character on Yelp, more than you already have, of course. And I'm also pretty darn sure the money was only offered after you read my review.. Because you still don't see where you guys went wrong. Asking for a refund to not participate in a charity event, and then being upset after being lied to (and receiving no real apology for it.. which really rattled me).. that IS defensible. Even after reading my review and my side.. I'm not sure how you don't see the logic in this. The fact is, this could have been handled much better on many levels and at many moments by you and your staff. But this is what Yelp is for. At best, this is your average resale shop. If you removed the sign and renamed it Plato's Closet you wouldnt be able to tell the difference. I was originally attracted to this place because the commercials made it sound like it was a bit more upscale than other resale shops but, I was disappointed with the name brand selection. Also, the workers seemed uninterested in helping you, speaking to you, or even smiling. If I could give this business zero stars, I would. We arrived at 11:15am with a medium sized box of clothes, fifteen minutes after the store opens and we were told that our clothes would not be ready until closing at 9pm? We were made a promise by a woman that it WOULD be ready. So I drove 30 minutes to the location again, arrived at 8:30pm only to be given another "promise" that it would be ready tomorrow. I got a personal call from the business owner Lowell and he seemed really sincere and nice about wanting to do right. So I change my rating to 2 stars. I would have changed it to 3 stars but I don't go on YELP much and so I have not been on here in awhile-I come on here today and see the answer from Lurinda which is sort of a catty apology and insult mixed together. I see why Lowell mentioned that the not so nice girls who used to work there are gone, maybe Lurinda was one. Her answer was not as professional as desired. She mentions that my previous post was so inflammatory it was removed. An odd way to start an apology. I will be honest it was removed because it seemed threatening. It was a funny poem and sort of nonsensical, I am a creative person and so I don't always do things in the normal way. It was not actually at all threatening-but perceived that way. I was trying to have some fun with the situation. If I was going to give re-sale a chance after the nice call I might have gone to Uptown Cheapskate. However I have had those 3 bad experiences and I stand by my opinion that many times buyers have an ego like a doorman of a club. I experienced that in the 80's and I can feel the same thing, not by this place every time, but several others. I find the psychology of that interesting. A fragile ego gets a position of slight power and wants to feel even bigger so there are small slights which then make the fragile person feel stronger. I feel really good about myself-so I don't need that and won't put up with it and won't put myself in a position to experience it again. read more

I'm ok with this place. They seem to buy more than Buffalo Exchange. They are most definitely cheaper. Dead serious. My biggest complaint with re-sale shops is that those of use that started the resale craze back in the 80's have been a bit priced out of it. Yet, Uptown keeps their prices low...for now. I like this place. I've made some killer buys here. So, try it out. Especially if you are down south and you're starting to find the trek up north a pain in the ass. read more

I bought a groupon for a $10 for $20 deal, which sounded great. However, when I went shopping I was so disappointed in the selection. Every piece of clothing I liked was either ripped or stained. Seriously, everything I picked up was damaged in some way. I spent over an hour looking around and finally just gave up and my groupon expired, unused. If you are looking for a resale shop Plato's Closet has much stricter buy-back policies which results in a better selection of undamaged clothes. Don't waste your time here! read more

You will have better luck at Goodwill or name brand outlets for the quality of clothing to purchase. Lots of exotic dancer type clothing and shoes for women and loads of close out GAP men's shirts they were selling as new for $16. Selling was also hit or miss and not worth the time. Good for buying, not for selling. Took longer than they told me I would, which I understand, but I could see that they were done with my clothing for about 15 minutes before they called my name. Funnily enough, they did not even call my name. Someone else went up, asked if their clothes were ready, and they said yes. They did not ask their name, instead just handed them the cash. When they went to hand him the bag of remaining clothes, they handed him my bag of clothes instead. Everyone was confused. He was like "yeah this isn't mine", so they made him give the cash back. Then they called me up and hurriedly gave it to me instead, without even inquiring about the store credit option. I get that mixups happen, but my clothes were sitting there while the employees talked to each other and did things on the computer and made phone calls, and then they just handed off my clothes and cash to the first person that walked up without asking for a name. Got an anthropologie sweater for 15 bucks here: score! Most of the selection here leaves a little too be desired, it's more thrift store than high end consignment. But if you pick through the racks, there are some finds. I joined the loyalty program although I'm not local, just in case I'm ever shopping at one of these in March for the birthday month discount. read more

I love when the original tags are still on the clothes (which happens quite often) so I can see how much money I'm really saving. They have brands that you can find at places like Target and Forever 21, but also places like Banana Republic, Express, and Free People. Okay, I never write reviews, but I had to for this hidden gem! I came here to sell some of my clothes yesterday and was immediately greeted by one of their lovely ladies on staff! The girl told me that they were slammed from the weekend and unfortunately wouldn't be able to get to my clothes that day. She gave me a $5 coupon for the inconvenience, which is really no inconvenience to me since I live so close, but I'll take it :) I decided to still browse the store, and boy was I overwhelmed with the large selection! I had my hands full of clothes and the staff started me a fitting room. They continued to check in and add it to my fitting room for me - I expect this service at upscale stores, and was super excited to receive the same treatment here! I ended up finding an adorable seersucker Lilly Pulitzer dress (still retails online for $200) for $15!! I found a great pair of heels, and another cute black dress as well. I was so excited with my purchases and cannot wait to come back! TIP (although not sure I want to share): This place is jam packed with clothes, take the time to really dig, you WILL find great deals!! UPDATE: I came back today and sold my clothes- you can choose cash, or a store credit (more value than cash). I walked out with $55 in hand :) They have men's and women's fashions (clothes, outerwear, accessories, handbags, shoes, etc), and they even have some new retail items too. My friend told me about this store a few weeks ago so I started following them on fb. I gotta say, as a born and raised austinite, I've never seen anyone wear some of the outfits they put together. But anyway, I finally went in yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised! The store was so nice you wouldn't even think it was a second hand store. The clothes are gently used and the price was great. However, I didn't get greeted when I came in and no one asked if I needed a fitting room even thou two workers walked near me and just kept walking. I used to just see this place but never thought to ever go in and check it out. I wish I would have done so sooner rather than going to Goodwill or Savers. This place has the cutest clothes. The first time I went, I was not expecting so much fashionable clothing, I ended up leaving the store with basically a new wardrobe. I also did not know you could sell your clothes and belongings here! The place does not smell funky like other thrift stores do *cough*Plato'sCloset*cough*. Should have updated this a long time ago but I'm finally getting to it. I was contacted by management (or someone) they resolved the original issue I had with this place. I actually do recommend people to do trade ins here. They take a lot of your clothing as long as it's in style! I think my selling experience would have been better on a non-busy day. Fantastic prices in this place and quality merchandise. We were visiting Austin from California and decided to do some shopping and were very pleasantly surprised. I expected the "usual" thrift shop type of merchandise but the best way to describe this is akin to manufacturer repackaged for goods you'd get online that are not "new" (although they do have new as well). The only difference practically speaking is its not "new" but the quality is generally the same. And the selection was outstanding--every possible item you could expect to go there for is there. Further, the staff were very helpful as well as knowledgeable. And its not only great for purchasing but you can sell merchandise as well. But don't expect them to accept junk--its got to be quality to be accepted and that's what you'd expect to buy. read more
