I hired a road bike from Urban two weekends in a row and they were fantastic both times. The bike was ready when I arrived and the check in process was quick and straightforward. I got my bike from the bike shop side and found the guys there very knowledgeable and professional. They helped me with routes and gave me some good tips that come from proper local knowledge. The most impressive aspect about the whole set up is that everyone seems to like what they do and so they do it very well. If you have some time on your hands in Boston and want to see the sights and get some exercise, then there can't be many better options than here. read more

Had the best time!!! I had only 1.5 days to enjoy Boston but was limping from a plantar fasciitis injury. Biking was the perfect way to be up close and personal with all the beauty and history of Boston. I felt totally safe with three guides riding with us through streets and watching traffic. There were even young boys with their mom on this tour. We did the City View Tour which was 11 miles and had the best views of the Charles River. We biked through Beacon Hill, Fenway Park, South End, Boston Common, Downtown Crossing, and much more. Thanks, Mike, Gary, and Bob! All nice guys! They had great stories and up to date history of Bean Town along with great recommendations for restaurants afterwards with reasonable prices. After our tour, we were able to rent our bikes for an extra $20 for the day. I love how they supplied helmets, water bottles, locks, and even flat tire kit, just in case. Glad we were able to bike to one of their restaurant recommendations so my foot did not have to be in pain. Oh, another great convenience: they are also a BagBnB site so we could have our luggage stored there while we biked before our 6 pm flight home. After we were done biking, it was a quick 4 minute walk to the blue train line to Logan Airport, which is two stops away. Caught our plane without problems. Great memories! read more

We had an awesome time and would highly recommend this as a way to see the city over any other tour. We had the pleasure of meeting Glen our tour guide on what was supposed to be a group outing but thanks to Hurrican Irene it ended up being a private tour. He was extremely informative, kind, personable and all around great guy! He would make an ecellent tour guide, actor, cycling partner or drinking buddy. Did this a couple times over the summer. The bikes feel cheap but hold up. The staff is extremely friendly and knows what they are doing. Tour is pretty fun but lacks that "Humor/adventerous" feeling that will make you remember it forever. Just a typical tour. nothing that sets it apart from anyone else. Overall 4 stars read more

I am STUNNED that this place has such a high rating. I love bike tours when I travel, so it seemed like a great idea to do one when I moved to the area. We waited until some friends came to visit, then bought 6 tickets for the City Tour. I strongly discourage you from doing the same, since this company does not operate their tours in a safe manner and they will require you to break traffic laws and endanger yourself and your fellow riders. (Note: this reflects a tour we did in August 2012, I just noticed that their rating is not reflective of the service and decided to review them.) Strike 1: We were given standard adjustable helmets, and I have a small head so I knew it wouldn't work. I made it as small as possible, tried it, and then asked for something else. I explained that my personal helmet was a women's specific design and maybe they had a smaller or children's option that I could try? Three times, the female employee (I didn't get any names) told me it was fine. It was clearly NOT fine, I could fit my entire hand under it! I had to argue with her to get something that fit properly. It was even more frustrating because I had called when I made the reservation and asked if I should just bring my own helmet, and was specifically told that they had lots of options and there was no need to do that. (At least I know how it should fit, I wonder how many tourists didn't know better.) Strike 2: We had 2 female tour guides. One was older and the younger (college aged?) one was very enthusiastic and what you would expect from a tour guide. As we moved around the city, we found that you could not hear the older woman at all. She would stop us in a busy area (right by the Garden) and then turn away from the group to face the landmark and talk. So, we paid for a tour of Boston but only got half of it. Strike 3: I can get over the other two strikes, but this one is unacceptable. The concern for safety was completely lacking. Immediately after getting our bikes and helmets, we were sent to an area under a trellis and instructed to ride around there to get a feel for the bikes. We did this-- and after a few minutes, I noticed the huge "no bikes" sign. Great, way to follow posted city guidelines. While biking on the Esplanade, one guy was having a hard time keeping up, and eventually he fell completely off his bike trying to go over a bridge. Since both tour guides were in the front of the group, they didn't notice. We all had to yell to get them to stop, they were just biking right along. This is a TOUR, you cater to TOURISTS, and many in the group obviously weren't experienced cyclists or even in good physical shape! But even that isn't the worst part. We spent the entire tour doing things like running red lights, or not stopping at stop signs, or biking 2-3 cyclists across in the car lanes when we should have been in single file. We were flagrantly breaking traffic laws. We even ran a red light going into the crazy intersection at the MGH stop, which is confusing and dangerous if you follow the laws! I was horrified-- I said no, I'm not running the light, and the tour guide yelled at me! As a bike commuter, I know how important it is, for my safety and the reputation of cyclists, for us to follow traffic laws. I could not believe this company was operating in such an unsafe manner. I just went to their website and they know have a big ad dissing Hubway. This company CLEARLY does not encourage safe cycling or even cycling at all. Please do not give them your money or risk your safety with them. read more

Great way to see Boston! My married daughter and I took the bike tour to hit the highlights of Boston while on vacation here. The bikes were in great condition and the operator made sure everyone was safe the whole time. He was knowledgable of Boston's history and gave us an interesting education about the landmarks. Not good memeber a of the Boston cycling community. Stranded in the Esplanade with a flat I was overjoyed to see these guys walking a tour toward me! They were all walking their bikes, not cycling. I needed 30 seconds max with a pump to get me home. "We don't have a pump," the first staff member says after my polite inquiry. "I have one but don't have time to help you," the second staff member says. I'd always though these guys were cool - they park their giant van on my street in Cambridge. I'd suggested their tours to visitors before, believing they we're responsible members of the bike community in Boston. Not anymore - turns out they're only interested in helping the community if you're paying them. Go to HubWay.com and get a day pass, a map, and make your own tour. Much cheaper and you won't have to support these folks who don't "have time" for their hometown community. read more

Hands down. Best. Bike. Shop...Ever. If you want a solid, local and friendly place to buy your next bike or biking accessories, by all means buy it here. I've walked in a few times before seriously looking into buying my next bike and out of all the Boston-area shops I walked into, this place had by far the best customer service I've seen at ANY bike shop. Upon first glance, you would be quick to assume (as I was) that their selection is limited to what is in the main shop and the adjacent show room and therefore, their prices are heavily up-charged. FALSE! I purchased a Kona mountain bike from them last week and compared to other bike shops in the area, I got a pretty sweet deal. They also throw in a 10 percent discount on accessories with your bike purchase and then some depending on make, model, etc. Another aspect of my experience that I really appreciated is that the owner (Andrew?) was always there helping out everyday customers and walk-ins. I'd probably compare it to walking into a bar and having the owner serving you drinks (A non-existent scenario). The owner and this other guy named Jim were the main people helping me out with this purchase. The City Tour I really wanted to do was full. In their defense this was a last minute decision on our part, so I wasn't surprised. My friend was in town only for the day so we agreed to go on the Cambridge tour instead. It was ok, there just aren't as many sights or points of interest as I imagine there are on the city tour and I'm not as interested in Cambridge as I am in Boston. We had a guide and then (I think) the owner along with us and they were kind of competing for who would give the information at each stop, so there was a lack of continuity there. Toward the end we rode for about 15 minutes without a stop. I thought it was a bit much, and would have liked to stop at least once and hear some more information about the city. It felt like more of a bike ride with a big group than a bike tour. I have taken lots of bike tours and there's usually a big "here's where you can take a picture" moment, but that never came. We snuck in some photos while listening to the guides, but didn't get a good group shot with a cool skyline background or anything like I am usually able to get. I did love the bikes they used, they felt great. The guides themselves were very friendly and nice and did a great job of getting us through traffic and crossing at lights and such, I never felt unsafe. I would recommend the company but for what we saw on the Cambridge tour I would definitely not pay $50. Thought about going on the City Tour in a few weeks, but not sure I can justify another $50 each if it will be a similar experience. read more

I stopped by last weekend to use their air pump outside the shop. It was my first time riding this year, and my bike was acting funny. The air helped, but my bike was still sounding strange. I went into the bike shop, to see if there was someone who could do a quick assessment of how bad my problem was. Parker and Maddie were working, and they took the next 15 minutes to play around with my bike, and eventually fix the problem (my fenders were hitting the wheels)! All out of the goodness of their hearts! What a wonferful experience for me, and I will go back there for all my bicycle servicing needs. read more

Hands down one of the best tours I've ever taken while visiting any destination! My husband and I came up to Boston on a last minute business trip.. We stayed an extra day to tour the city. Just the evening before I came across an advertisement for the bike tours. The next morning we went by the shop to see if we could take a tour. We were met by personable and friendly staff, and decided on the Emerald tour .....16 miles thru the city, local neighborhoods, shopping areas and beautiful parks. There is no way you could see what we saw, on a bus, in a car, or on a walk. If I were here longer, without any doubt, I would be taking the other tours offered. If I'm every visiting this city again, I will be on a bike tour read more

I did the City Views of Boston, what seems like their most standard ride. The pace was nice for just about anyone, and I feel like we got to see a wide range of places in Boston. The tidbits of history the guides gave at each stop were really interesting, and we didn't stop anywhere for too long. I'd definitely look into other rides next time I'm in Boston. read more

The "City View" tour was great time. Our guides, Craig and Moe, were very knowledgable about the area, very helpful with the equipment, and all around friendly guys. The tour was done in a very comfortable pace, got to see many aspects of the city, and learned a lot about the area. The rental bikes were very comfortable, in good condition, and the staff was very helpful in adjusting them for each individual. I was in town for a business trip and decided to rent a bike for a couple of days. The one negative I have to say about this place is that they won't store the bike for you overnight. I rented the bike at 4:00 pm and the rental period is 24 hours. The store seems to have plenty of room to hold the bike, but they refused. They said I would have to pay for another rental day if I returned the bike that night and picked it up the next day. So I had to beg my hotel to let me keep the bike at the hotel. They ended up putting it in a closet, which I'm sure wasn't secure. read more

As an inexperienced rider, I was a little nervous that I had signed up for a 150 mile bike ride weekend event. I had gone to Urban Adventours to rent a bike for both my training and the actual event. I found the staff to be knowledgeable and friendly; they were very patient and willing to answer my many questions. If you need a road bike for a tri or a long distance ride, I would highly recommended renting from Urban Adventours. They have a great selection of high quality bikes, their prices are reasonable, the pick up/drop off was easy, and they even offer package deals if you plan to rent multiple times. I have visited Boston about 15 times in my lifetime. However, it wasn't until this tour that I realized I have never really EXPERIENCED Boston. This was HANDS DOWN the MOST fun I have ever had in Boston. I saw more in 2 hours than I had in my previous 15 visits COMBINED. Our tour guide, Charles was extremely knowledgable. You could sense his excitement and passion for every spot visited. He even had some great personal stories to tell. Plus, you have the bonus of fab guides (try to go with Bill, Katherine and Tara) who not only share interesting tidbits about the history and color of the city but also help navigate the serpentine streets. First time to Boston and signed up for the city tour online before arriving. Seemed like a great way to see the city and I was not disappointed. Well planned route with a well paced group of 20 riders and 3 guides including, as it turned out, the owner. Perfect semi-upright and good rolling bikes for the city, with lots of amenities ready to go. This seems like ground zero for everything that is right about inclusive urban biking in Boston. Do not hesitate to take a risk on their bike tour. You'll have a great time! read more

A fun way to see Boston. I have a bad back so would not survive the all the walking to see all the sights. Boston drivers can be aggressive jerks, but luckily the tour stuck mainly to bike paths, bike lanes, and side streets. read more

Not a good experience. I rented 2 bikes the day before the Boston Marathon so my friend and I could follow my wife as she ran. The only problem is that the bike I was issued was not mechanically sound and turned my plan into a real pain in the butt, literally. After riding for about 2 miles I noticed the seat was wobbly, I did a quick assessment and the bolt that holds it in place was loose so I tightened with my fingers and continued. Needless to say the seat came loose again and for the rest of the ride I had a seat that was not stable. I practically stood and rode the bike most of the day (about 30 miles). Upon returning the bike to the shop I explained the situation to the clerk who went to the manager and explained my dissatisfaction with their bike. He returned and offered me a free rental for the following day.. as if I wanted to go for a bike ride after that experience, not to mention I was flying out the next morning which I told him. He looked at me and said sorry and that was it. now I am No customer service guru, but the way I see it a discounted rate or even not charging for the broken bike would have been a more appropriate course of action. Not to mention the manager should have spoken with me directly. Needless to say I do not recommend these guys for you bicycle needs. read more

I was so disappointed with this tour. I'm originally from MA, but wanted to show my boyfriend the city while we were in town. We did the City View Tour on a Saturday afternoon. The weather was relatively nice and the route took us on some nice trails with great views of the Charles River, but we could have rented bikes for a lot less and saw these views on our own. Our tour guide was not very engaging and it was clear our small group of 3 was extremely bored. In fact she ended the tour saying "sorry if I bored you". Would only return again to rent the bikes. We took the Tour de Cambridge. Our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Boston and its environs and kept us safe in traffic. The routes were good and I am glad I didn't try to rent a bike without the tour. I booked a private tour for our sales meeting, with people coming from the UK, Finland, Germany, Singapore, and all over the US - 20 people in total. Many had not been to the Boston area and a bike tour seemed like a great way to learn about the history. I had been on bike tours in London, Paris, Sydney, and Melbourne and loved all of them - usually the highlight of our trips. This was a colossal disappointment. We booked for 6:00 p.m., but I had warned the company that we might run a bit late which we did due to worse than expected traffic. At a few minutes before 6, I got a call on my cell phone with a friendly voice threatening to cancel the tour if we weren't there by 6:15. Some of our group of 20 did manage to make it there by then, so the tour began at around 6:35 after bike and helmet fittings. And we would have been there sooner, but the parking is in a garage a few minutes away, and more challenging if you are not familiar with the area. The 1.5 hour tour was over at 7:40, and we just really did not ride or see that much. I felt like we were just being "processed" through. In fact, the guide was a nice enough fellow, my sense was that he was told to be back at a certain time - tough to say. In any case, I raised my concern via e-mail the next day using the same e-mail that I had used in prior communications. Now, 6 days later and no response of any kind. Possibly for a tour during normal hours you may be quite happy, especially if you have no other experience to compare to. But I remain disappointed, especially for those that traveled so far who hoped to see a bit more of the Boston history. The Red Sox were in town - should have done that instead! Buyer beware is my advice. read more

Renting bikes to see Boston or Cambridge sounded like such a great way to go. The staff who rented us the bikes were very friendly and helpful. Except for noticing wear on the tires, we were excited. We signed and paid. Just be advised that if anything goes wrong like a flat tire, you are on your own and the helpfulness ends. If you're a tourist, it can be a challenge to find a bike shop or you can lock and leave but it'll cost ya. It's still a great way to see the sights...if all goes well and you're not in the middle of a heat wave. read more

This is one of the better bike tours I've ever been on! My boyfriend and I were only in town for a few hours, but this tour let us see tons of things in the city--we truly felt like we "did" Boston. Our guide, Keith, was really knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor; he seemed like a pro even though he admitted after the tour was over that it was his first time leading a tour alone! Also, Keith did a fabulous job diffusing a really awkward moment when a Christian Scientist tried to proselytize us as we looked on at their gorgeous cathedral (don't worry, we hear this isn't a regular thing!). Definitely worth the money! Our favorite part was chuckling at the duck tours/segway tours that intersected our path--if only they knew how much fun it is to ride a bike in Boston! read more
