What a wonderful experience and David was the best coach for both someone like me, who had never done anything in this vein and my son who in his near 30s was really great at this endeavor! We popped in on a Sunday and had alot of fun in a whole new way. I would highly recommend it and although the large groups of weekly league members were loud and a bit distracting, alot could be learned just from watching them. I had always heard of axe throwing but never actually got a chance to do it until I went to Urban Axes. When you walk in, you fill out a waiver, and then you're led to your bay with a coach. If you've never thrown an axe, your coach will walk you through every step and teach you how to throw one properly. Their tips and tricks definitely helped me start throwing one with great efficiency! There's no better feeling that hearing that "thunk" on the board and seeing it on a bullseye. There are games you can play with your friends where you can score points and make bets. The coach can better explain the rules to you. All in all, great place to have some fun with friends. read more

This place is awesome. Great staff, BYOB, and just an overall fun vibe. I came here with my wife for a fun activity as part of her birthday celebration, and we were not disappointed. The biggest thing that stood out to us was their emphasis on safety, both for the facility and other axe throwers. Once we went through all the safety protocols with our designated staff member, we were free to start throwing. The person working with us taught us the standard way to throw the axe and also taught us different variations based on how well we progressed. When I got cocky, thinking I was doing well, and challenged him to a throw off, he easily wiped the floor with me but was extremely fun to play against. We recently had a company event here, and it as a huge hit. I personally was worried that it would be super hard or there would be a lot of downtime standing around, but we had about 30 people there and they opened up three throwing lanes. We had three coaches, and all were awesome (sorry I can only remember Thad and Jake's names). Everything was set up to be a big tournament, so between rounds and practicing, there was a lot of throwing time for everyone and the coaches do a great job of giving tips without being overbearing. Everyone had the best time and the competition was really fun! The atmosphere is awesome, rustic warehouse vibes and I like that they allow you to BYOB and food, There is a big table to set up the food and they have fridges around the space to keep the drinks cool. We had plenty of space for our company, even with a couple of other big groups in there. I would absolutely recommend for private parties or company events, and want to come back on my own! read more

Quick Summary I had very low expectations when coming here, but boy was I surprised. I came here for an event tonight and I had so much fun! My group was instructed on how to throw properly and even taught ways to improve our technique based upon our throws. I will admit that I had watched youtube videos prior to coming here to try to gain an upper hand on others. I quickly learned it was not easy and youtube doesn't teach me everything. Now I will say, I could easily spend hours here trying to improve my technique. I am one of those people, haha. That being competitive and a perfectionist. I love axe throwing. I've been coming to this Urban Axes location since Nov. of 2017. Leagues: We have 8 leagues, two Sunday brunch, two Sunday night, Two Tuesday night and two Wednesday night. I personally throw in two of these leagues. I've been in leagues for a year and a half. I don't know how but we have seemingly gathered all of the nicest, most fun loving, beer loving, and competitive folks in Austin for this. There is something to be said for how great this group of people is. I have made so many great friends through this sport and look forward to putting Austin at the top. There's a handful of people who are going to be traveling to Canada next year to compete in the NATF world championship tournament. Hoping to be one of them. Walk ins: You can go throw for 1 hour, learn the ropes and get hands on experience throwing an axe. It's not like throwing a baseball or football, the technique is pretty easy to pick up but that really just depends on the person and how much control of their upper body they have. If you're built like an wacky inflatable waving arm guy this might not be for you. Drinking: it's BYOB and the entire facility is 21+. Beer and wine only, they usually got cups in case you forget yours but try to come prepared. Booking ahead: go to Urban Axes website to book your walk in or group ahead of time. Groups: You can book a group at least two days in advance. Requires at least 6 people Sunday through Thursday and 8 people Friday and Saturday. It's about $55 a person after tip for the coaches. You learn how to throw, throw for points to get a seating in a tournament, then usually top 12 get the throw for the bracket. It's so much fun. The staff: They are incredible people who really give a shit about this sport, community and the safety of the people in their groups. They will train you, encourage you and make sure you're following the rules for your protection. Don't be an axehole! read more

I have wanted to go here for awhile and when I saw that we had a yelp elite event here I quickly reserved my spot. This was far more fun that I would have ever imagined. I got to relieve some stress and had so much fun. The staff was awesome and super helpful. Each trainer catered to each individual and would give specific tips after each throw to help you hit the target and it did work! I was impressed that even though they were super busy with such a large yelp group, they found the time to be patient and give proper techniques and tips to each individual person. They were very patient with me and let me use a lighter ax and let me stand above the line because I am very short and petite. They have ample parking but on a busy evening you will need to park on the grass or in a muddy area(if it's rained recently) but I didn't have a problem with that and it was a very short walk to the side entrance. Again the entrance does NOT have airport road it's to the corner. You sign in and fill in the paperwork EXACTLY as it is on your drivers license and then check in and get started. It is BYOB so bring some beer and or wine and pizza or whatever snacks you would like. I would recommend a group of 8 or just go in as a walk in and join a group and make some new friends. Everyone is usually very friendly and welcoming. I can't wait to have organize an event here with a group of friends. read more

I went here recently with a group of 12 coworkers. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but do not be fooled. This place is fantastic. The staff are very good. They are very friendly and work hard to make sure your experience is the best. Our "coach" did a great job of teaching us the art of throwing axes but also was good at encouraging us and keeping us entertained the entire time we were there. I love to see places that run an excellent business and this is one of them. They clearly take pride in what they do and it shows in their customer service. It was every bit as much fun as you'd imagine it to be! On a rainy Tuesday night we made our way to Urban Axes. It's in a large warehouse that vibrates with with noise as you approach the door. When you walk inside you notice it's clean, wide open and full of people having fun. We had a full time instructor with us during the session. I was with a group of 4 and had a blast learning how to throw axes with one or two hands. When the axes just weren't hitting the mark he'd offer his helpful advice. Came here for a bachelor weekend in Austin visiting from Los angeles and would highly recommend coming back. He would give us tips on how to throw the ax and I definitely became a lot better than my first throw (my first throw I got my ax stuck in the fence above the target haha). Very positive and was made this a memorable experience. Played round Robin then had a single elimination tournament. Dick would keep score and make the game more competitive and enjoyable. Since Urban Axes opened, I've wanted to come try it. While I was in Austin, I knew this would be a great decision. When you walk in, you are immediately greeted by the sounds of axes hitting wood and sometimes cages. You can choose to be a walk-in. But, be careful with this option. There are a limited number of spots each day, so you are not guaranteed a chance to throw if you show up without a reservation. I showed up without one and was able to get the two remaining walk in spots for the day. You can also reserve your spot. This would be the best option because you are guaranteed a chance to throw. Also, there are whole leagues happening. I don't know anything about this to talk in detail, but if that's of interest to you, know they have that option. Whenever you show up, make sure to first sign your waiver. This has to be done each time you visit urban axe. Because we were walk-ins, we were put in an area to learn with a coach. Our coach was great and really gave us awesome directions. The first few times I missed getting the ax stuck in the wood, but once I got the feel for it, I hit bulls-eye. Definitely a great experience... and did I mention, it's BYOB, and they have fridges?! read more

A few buddies suggested axe throwing on a Sunday afternoon so we decided to go check it out. We go there about 1pm and were told that it would be about 2 hours for our group of 5. We put our name down and then went to get some lunch. We arrived at our assigned time and were directly sent to our lane. Each lane has two axe throwing pits and an employee to teach/direct you on what to do. Next thing you know, we are throwing axes at a wall. After an hour, your body will be hurting and you will be pumped up beyond belief. I definitely want to come back and do it again! read more

My friends and I went here on Saturday looking for something new and fun to do. We made sure to book a spot online, which I believe is what you would need to do, in order to reserve a spot. Super easy to do online. Plenty of parking which is always a plus. Everyone was super friendly and checking in was easy. They recommend getting there at least 15 minutes early, to ensure you get the full hour. That way you can sign your waiver and and hangout. Love that it is BYOB, but we didn't do this, not sure how I feel with drinking and throwing an ax. Our instructor was so nice and very patient. She made the whole experience great for us. I wish we were able to add more time to our session, or have the option online to do that. But overall, this is a must to do. They do have leagues that you can join, if you think this is something that you would want to do. We will be coming back for sure! read more
