I love me some kickball! My husband and I joined the Thursday night Capital league in 2012 after being in Austin for less than a year. This, in my opinion, is THE way to make friends in a new city. Many of our best friends are WAKA players. I love how the seasons are essentially year-round, and it gives us something to look forward to on Thursday nights after a long work week. It is a social league. Meaning, bring your beer on the field, shake your ass, and wear a costume. Go to the themed party (2-3 a season) and drink free beer and cocktails with teammates and rivals. Engage in some friendly competition. DO your best, but laugh at yourself when the ball bounces off your boobs. The organization of the league is well-run, in my opinion. Weekly e-mails keep everyone informed, and the community of players on any given night is friendly and inviting. Tourneys happen at the end of the season, and winners of each league are invited to Vegas for the mother-of-all-tounaments. Its such good fun. I just joined WAKA at the start of the 2010 summer season, and so far I have been having a great time. We are playing in the less competitive league (competitive kickball = oxymoron) and so far I've had a great experience with my teammates, the refs, and opposing teams. Everyone seems to be very drinking focused, and we've not had one team refuse to 'shotgun to decide home team,' although i think that may be in the kickball bylaws. I will that the games are pretty short. Sometimes you need more than 45 min or 5 innings (which usually translates to one or two at bats) to see who's the better team but that's how it goes i guess. A couple years ago i played ASSC kickball and i can tell you this league is a lot more fun, with much better people and you dont have to drive all the way to the airport to play. I definitely recommend this league, and if anyone wants to put together a Yelp team let me know, because I'm in. read more

Where do I begin? I am beyond disappointed in this league. If I could give zero stars, I would. I have reached out to them in every way possible to absolutely no avail. My team and I have been playing for Austin Sports and Social Club for a year now, but we registered too late this season and couldn't all get on the same team. One of our friends recommended WAKA since he had played for them before and he raved about the fun he had. Even though it was double the money, I sucked it up because I wanted to stay with our team. ...... We're half way through the season now and have yet to have a ref at any of our games. They are all "self-reffed", which means that both teams call the shots themselves- rendering our games completely meaningless. And yes, we all understand that it's "just kickball" but I PAID to at least be considered for play-offs or a bar tab or something. None of that exists in this league. This will surely go down the black hole with all my other messages, but thought I'd at least do the rest of the community a favor. read more

Let me just start off by saying that I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I signed up for kickball last spring. At first glance, it seemed like a bunch of semi-athletic, 20-somethings that were out at a park playing a child's game. After closer inspection, I came to realize that it was so much more than that. Over the last year my Thursdays have been filled with gas station beverages, dive bar karaoke, flip cup, jello shots, costumes and best of all, the craziest group of people ever. Oh yeah and in between all of that we play kickball. If any of this sounds appealing this is the league for you. I'm not a big sports person, I pride myself on not knowing the rules to the game and I have won the trophy for most uncoordinated in my family for the last 25 years, so I don't come out to the field every week to play kickball. I come out because I love the people and it is one big party every Thursday. I can't say enough great things about the league and the people that I have met through WAKA. read more

Before joining WAKA, a social sports club, you should check off this list first: -Are you new to Austin or Have you been in Austin but want to mix things up? -Do you want to make friends who are fun and active? -You don't take competition too seriously? -Are you reliable? -Do you like drinking games? If you answered most of these 'yes', then you should give WAKA a try. I was new to Austin a few years ago, and at the recommendation of a friend in Dallas (yes I know, boo Dallas), I sought out the local kickball leagues. Yelp said WAKA had the best rating. I also did some YouTube searching and you can find some good promo videos there for WAKA. Sign up online, and you will be contacted by a community manager who can either put you as a single on an established team, a small group into a team, or will create a new team. Part of the fun is coming up with an awesome name. The managers are really helpful and nice. They also don't tolerate any douche baggery so don't worry about any of that. You will have a "mixer night" before the season begins so you can get to know your teammates, and play a couple rounds just for funsies. I actually met a girl on the first night of kickball! The season is usually 6-7 weeks, always on the same night of the week. WAKA has multiple nights and leagues...so be sure you understand what you're getting into. Half of WAKA is kickball, the other half is social revelry. Each league has their go-to bar, where the competition continues with drinking games, karaoke, and drink specials! My last season our bar was Third Base on West 6th...it was a great time. Looking forward to starting up again! Oh! The end of season party! WAKA rented out an entire 2-floor bar, and made it 80's theme night. Great times all around. read more

I think the league is a good blend of caring equally about the competition and the drinking without going overboard on either. I joined WAKA this year and it's a ton of fun. Pretty much everyone on my team and on the teams I've met have all been extremely friendly and easy to talk to. This is 99% a social club and what's nice is that you have the choice to do whatever you want every Thursday; you can: get caught up with your friends, chat with a few people you've never met, or go back to your college roots and challenge strangers to a game of survivor flip-cup. Combine that with a sense of "how do we top the other team in ridiculous behavior" every week, and you're going to have a good time...guaranteed. -1 star for the small community of the WAKAnese who come only to win...at kickball. I'm thinking of setting up a musical chairs (WAMCA) or duck-duck-goose (WADDGA) league just to see how far these people will go. Crap, why do those leagues sound like a lot of fun to me? read more

I remember my first season of WAKA like it was just over a year ago. I remember thinking, "well, this is fun, but maybe I should do something a little bit better for my liver like join another indoor soccer team." Little did I know I'd be hooked, and now, just over a year later, I'm still going strong. At the start of season 5, I definitely consider myself a WAKA enthusiast. Things that are good to know: Bring booze. Bring cups. Bring a table. You will be extremely jealous of the teams that are playing flip cup before/during/after the game. But the best part? Everyone in WAKA is looking to meet fun, new people.. so those teams always welcome a challenge from a random team. I've made many a friend over flip cup table. Anyway, I don't know what else to say about WAKA except that I'm notorious within my Friday lunch crew as saying ridiculous things due to my epic WAKA-induced hangover. Epic. Awesome. Fun. Drunk. Good lord...let's just say I did not know what I was signing up for! I have been playing in WAKA for about 3 seasons now and the fun just never seems to end! Around lunch time on Thursdays I start getting excited about what new debauchery will be going on that night. The friends I have made through WAKA are amazing, fun that I quite possibly may have never met outside of here. From having a beer outside and pretending to workout to singing my lungs out and actually getting a workout from dance party at Egos afterward, and I definitely recommend it. I think WAKA is awesome and it is one of the best organizations that I have ever been involved with. The truth of it is, it's all about what you make of it. It is a great opportunity to meet new people (and decide if you want them to be your friends), have regular social interaction, get outdoors, kick balls, whatever. WAKA even has a regular charity activity going on. It is light hearted for those that want it to be and can be competitive for those that need that outlet. Either way, it is all in fun and you can see fun happening at all times at the fields. Kickball is just awesome and then add in costumes, games, fans, parties, etc and your mind = blown. It may start out as a weekly thing but for 90% of the people i know, your kickball friends end up being your good friends that you spend all your time with. I'm starting my third season with WAKA and I love it. I tried social sports with another league and the differences are night and day. I never played social kickball before but it was really easy to pick up the league rules. The refs are pretty consistent with their calls. The other teams are always fun to play. (And there are parties with open bar tabs included in the fee. Sweet!) Yeah, some people have a competitive streak but all in all everyone remembers we're playing a schoolyard game and doesn't take it too seriously. I would rate 5 stars however my experience was hugely different just based on the team I played on. My original team was cool, but not hugely friendly. They made me feel like I didn't quite belong despite my best effort to be outgoing. So my critique would be - if you start a team with friends or colleagues and you have some free agents added to your team be friendly and get to know them. It's social sports. We're all in it to have fun and meet new people. It was really off-putting to feel like the odd one out. But my new team is freaking awesome and I'm happy to be back on the team for a second season. :) read more

Has our first practice game the other day and I'm very excited to star the season! I did already notice how some commented on the sportsmanship, though my team is very fun, I already sensed the competitiveness from some other players. Amanda our least was great though! I do with they would have maybe locked another bar, Gordoughs just doesn't seem like it is going to work. After finishing out the league, I was not a fan of some of the other teams. My team never even won a game and we had more sportsmanship than anyone else. That was disappointing. read more

Kickball with WAKA is really, really fun. I've played a couple seasons and always had a great time. It's awesome that drinking is allowed (encouraged even) and it's a great way to meet new friends or hang out with old ones. I do have a couple minor complaints. One would be the lack of referees. It's weird when someone from another team in the same league is reffing your games. They don't always know the rules that well and I've seen some pretty bad calls that went in favor of the team that the ref was buddy-buddy with. My only other complaint is that some teams are surprisingly douchy (excessive trash talking, arguing with refs, etc.). read more

The owner pays no attention to your concerns and is nowhere to be found during the championship game incompetent and it cost 30 to 40% more than other kickball leagues in the area. Had 2 refs at today for the CG, One was totally ignored along with 5/6 player from the other team telling him he made a bad call. More then one team said something to Cindy Honickman Carris beforehand, and she should be around(ghost she was)! yes I've played other league also. And to call the game! Give me a break! The WAKA League has new leadership and has improved dramatically. There is solid reffing, a great group of people, better schedulign and the league the perfect size. Communications have been consolidated, the newsletter has been turned into a blog, and regular season parties are always fun. We've done things on the rooftop of blind pig, regular party boats, austin parks and pizza, amazing race like bar crawl adventures. Playoffs are an all day saturday fun affair with kickball and beer and grilling. I've played ASSC kickball as well and found that to be really far out (the airport) and the league too huge to do anything but socialize with your own group. The other fantastic thing with WAKA is when you lose to a team... you get to challenge them in flip cup at the bar afterwards! Jovitas has been more than generous in their HH and drink specials. I joined WAKA when i first moved here and found a lot of lasting friendships. There is a pickup game on July 18th at Jaycee Fields if you'd like to try before you buy. read more

I played one season of kickball and could not stand it. I like to win but I am there primarily to have fun and maybe get a bit of a workout. Forget that, as a girl you will be relegated to the worst positions and god forbid you miss a catch, you'll be yelled at all night. I couldn't even get to the plate without having every guy on my team try to give me instructions like I was playing in the world series. I started playing Waka less than a year ago. This is my second season. Everyone there welcomed me in and made me part of the crowd. Me and my team have met a lot of new people and always have a great time, even if we happen to lose by some miracle. The leadership is as open as they can be. I've played in Austin Sports and Social Club, and I must say that WAKA kills it. I've a ton of people not only on my team but on other teams. There's no better way to spend a Thursday night then playing kickball with a bunch of crazies on a field across the street from G&S Lounge. So bring all your friends or just get put on a team. I signed up for the league (TX Live League) on the request of a friend, because the team needed girls. It was $64 for a 6-week summer league, and I thought that was a bit pricey, but I was willing to pay it to meet new people and have a fun experience. It by far was the worst sporting and outdoor experience I have had since coming to Austin 5 years ago. $64 and all I got was a t-shirt. I probably spent even more if you count the wasted gas to get to the fields off Robert E. Lee. The Jaycee Fields (next to Barton Springs) are usually littered with trash, beer cans, and dog poo, plus there's usually a contingent of drunk, angry, drugged-out people at the benches to the south. I'm scared to walk to my car most nights, and the cops are usually in attendance. My specific complaints on the league are a ton of bad sportmanship, lack of referees (in the Tx Live League) which on a few nights lead to cheating, bad arguments, and people not following the league rules, or following them incorrectly. We also receive mailings from both leagues, which makes it confusing. Save your money and time and try another outdoor organization, such as via Meetup.com or Hill Country Outdoors. read more

If you are new to this city or have been here for years this is a great way to get out once a week and meet new and exciting people! I have been playing WAKA kickball now for 7 seasons or 4 years and it is an unbelievable experience. I just moved to Austin with my girlfriend and we had no trouble at all getting placed on a new team that excited to have us join and now we have hung out with them all the time! It is definitely the easiest way to build a great network of friends as well as brush up on some professional networking if you feel like. With most players being 24-45 years old there are a lot of untapped possibilities that kickball brings to the table. All in all JUST DO IT! read more

Played two seasons of WAKA and that was enough to see the trends that Hollywood(Whitney) has so eloquently elaborated on. It seemed that many of the more interesting people moved on after one or two seasons and the asshats increased percentage wise. Gillis field was not very good for kickball... the balls the first season were total crap... terribly distorted after several games and no decent ones left for the playoffs. Freddie's was an improvement over Jaime's and the Alligator Grill... which had one bill for all that showed up one night ... never goin back to that place ever or Jaime's either! Talk of all-star games was all talk... A very immature crowd dominated the after game scene as the seasons progressed... It is a difficult thing to organize and pull off successfully... kinda like herding cats somewhat... I played over 900 soccer games and experienced some weird stuff there as well but definitely not as much as the typical WAKA team/game. Kari did a nice job but disagree on the "exercise" aspect she mentioned... Very little exercise involved... No drinking at Gillis allowed! I'd recommend watching a game and checking out the "fun" at Freddie's before committing to this league... it may seem like a waste of your time after a few games... My favorite games are pick-up games around the neighborhoods... lots more fun, competitive, and fewer asshats read more

Shit's fun. Going on season 4 and I've met a lot of people and made some really great friends doing it. Generally, most people are pretty easy going and laid back. Sometimes people get a little too competitive for something as absurd as adult, beer-league kickball, but it's fun to point and laugh at them. Still, a six-pack, some red plastic cups, kickball and a few hundred people to hang out with make for a pretty awesome night. read more

I've played in three different sports leagues with WAKA for several seasons. They aren't kidding when they say "best parties. best games. best friends". Although they are a bit more expensive than other sports and social leagues in Austin, you definitely get what you pay for - great refs and league coordinators, t shirts, bar games each week, 2 parties each season with open bars, and fun theme night competitions. When I first signed up to play kickball I wasn't sure what to think. A childhood game for adults? Really? YES! WAKA makes kickball fun for the everyone, from the everyday drunks to the childhood athlete. It is the perfect balance of fun and competetiveness. The bar after the games is great as well, the league has a deck set up at Jovitas for teams to meet each other and make friends all over the place.
