Signed up a group of 3 for a team-bonding event and we had a blast!!! Our tour guide Chester was a hoot, and ensured we had a fun but safe time. I called a couple times to confirm some questions, even though the FAQ online was very thorough. They suggest walk-in for groups under 6 although since it was for an "event" I wanted to make a reservation. They confirmed it was okay but that the 2.5 hour time slot may be a long time to be throwing for for 3 people. We were going to have to come a little later into the time slot anyway and I asked if a late show was okay and they confirmed that for us as well. We came in with 1.5hrs left in our reservation and it was very easy to check in and grab drinks and a charcuterie platter before heading over to throw. We were in the back area that was a lot quieter than the front and it was basically like having a private space! Chester taught us the basics and safety rules and we were throwing in no time. Throughout the session he coached us through good and bad throws and really tried to set us up for successful a successful session. We ended with an abridged round robin session for 3 for a fun mini competition. read more

I was fortunate in that a professional association I belong to sponsored an event at the Somerville Urban Axes location. I am a city kid, I thought axes belonged in the woods or in a horror movie. Turned out to be a great time, I found out that I was actually pretty good at throwing axes. I ended up booking a group for 18 people and ended up having to change the plans. I spoke to Jessica, she went way above and beyond what should have been expected of her. I sent her an email as instructed but the auto-correct adjusted the axes to aces in the email, so she never got it. All of a sudden an I get an email from her saying she never received my email. Remembering that I called, combined with not seeing my email, she took the initiative to track me down so that I could finish rescheduling the date. She has been great from start to finish. Professional organization, that is professionally run, and it is a clean and fun venue. Great place to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. All instructors were great and everyone left with all their fingers and toes. read more

What an awesome place! I admit I was not very excited at the idea of throwing axes for fun (I was actually pretty worried I'd end up hurting myself.) I joined the rest of my work team for a year-end team event and it was a great surprise. The food was good, the drinks too, (excellent virgin Seabreeze) but the biggest surprise was the axe-throwing fun and the atmosphere. Our coach was fantastic. Unfortunately I can't remember his name. He was patient, explained everything clearly, very attentive (he stayed next to whoever was throwing at all times), and encouraging. Thanks to him, I went from being completely useless with an axe to hitting a bullseye. (OK, I still had the worse score of the team. He's good, but he can't perform miracles). All the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Another thing I liked is that they do group pictures so you can have a souvenir of your axe throwing adventure. I will definitely be back with a smaller group of friends to practice. I understand how this can become addictive--you want to keep at it until you get better. My only comment is that the music was a bit loud and made it hard to speak to each other--which is not ideal for a team-building event. read more

This was a super fun and unique way to celebrate my friend's birthday. There's just something extremely satisfying about hurling an axe towards a target and sinking it into the bullseye. We weren't great at it, despite our coach's best efforts, but we still had a blast. They also had really great cider. read more

This place is so much fun! Came in with more people than were on our reservation but management was more than happy to accommodate us. One of the people in our party was also intending to ask his girlfriend to marry him but hadn't made arrangements with management beforehand. The manager was super accommodating and even offered to make us a quick wooden sign to help with the proposal. Amazing customer service! Axe throwing itself was much more fun than I anticipated and our coach was awesome! Helped bring out the inner lumberjack in even our shyest co-worker. Great event for a corporate group to have some effective team bonding! Trying to schedule something that all ages and abilities could enjoy wasn't easy but axe throwing turned out to be perfect! (Maybe that says something about us lol?) We all had alot of fun, from our most competitive members, to those of us looking to relax and have some and enjoy some refreshments. The only challenge we had was transportation issues due to construction in the area which isn't something Urban Axes has any control over. Had a really fun time here with some coworkers in December at a work social event. Our instructor was fun, engaging, helpful, and informative while making sure we all practiced safe throwing and good technique. We ordered a meat and cheese and veggie dip platter and the portions were very generous -- we were about 10 people and there was plenty leftover. They had a solid selection of beer and wine and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Overall, would definitely recommend this for a fun night out with a group of friends or for a work event! read more

Very poor experience at the Somerville location. Not only did we have to wait 20 mins to actually start our session, we were the abruptly moved to another section when they realized they were over booked. We didn't even receive an apology. We went from 2 throwers to 6. This place is clearly a cash grab don't waste your time coming here. Staff was also very rude/dismissive. read more

I brought a small group from my office to Urban Axes. It was an amazing time! We got great instruction from our coach to start out the night, and then began playing. While my personal skills were not awesome, even I agreed that it was a ton of fun. The tournament was a really cool feature (even as a spectator!). We got one of their catering packages for groups and found the food to be really good - fresh, high-quality ingredients and HUGE portions! We also thought that the selection of beers was top notch. A group of us went to celebrate Anti-Valentine's Day. Everyone was spaced out and the check in process was easy. Masks stay on the whole time, lanes were separated and clean. However, the mailing said the bar would be open for drinks before and after the sessions. However that was misinformation. When we arrived, there was a sign on the bar that said closed and we were discouraged from ordering anything by the person who checked us in. We were told we would have had to order food in order to get drinks and that would probably make us late for our reservation ( we were there 20 minutes early). Will (I believe) was our instructor and he was great. Would definitely go again, just wish there was more clarification about available beverage/food service. read more

A large group of us celebrated my brother's 30th at Urban Axes. We had our own private room in the back. The employees were all wicked friendly and did a great job explaining the process and helping out wherever necessary. The bar has a good selection of beer. The whole experience was a lot of fun. Very fun spot. Cool idea perfect date spot. Chill atmosphere and you get to toss axes! But there is no parking anywhere nearby. The place has a parking lot that's full and small and a public lot that's full across the street, we waited for a spot and nobody left. The rest is residential so good luck. Tried this with a group of 3 friends today and all of us loved it. None of the 4 of us had thrown axes before, but we all had success hitting the targets, thanks largely to our awesome instructor Emily, who taught us the basics then gave individual tips when one of us was struggling that worked every time. The bartender was both knowledgeable and friendly, with a strong selection of drinks, which added to the great experience. We also had a cheese board, which was a great mid-afternoon snack and had a nice assortment of meats, cheeses, crackers, and bread. read more

This was so disappointing :( we went for a walk in appointment and we're rushed through only to find out that instead of getting the 60 minutes we paid for we only got 20 minutes and still paid the full $30 per person. When we asked to talk to the manager about a partial refund or more time we were told that we pay for the teaching and not the time- even though we barely got teaching because we were only given a 20 minute slot. The manager was very rude. My take away is do not go to this location. And definitely make an appointment. We will not be coming back. read more
