It's been awhile since I've done what I consider a fighting sport. I did wrestling in high school, but ever since I graduated I've been falling behind on my physical fitness. Great gym. If you're looking for a place to box, Urban Boxing is the place for you. What I like best about the gym is that they have things to do for every level of boxer. It's an awesome workout and a good place to learn how to defend yourself. Another thing I really appreciate about Urban Boxing is the expert instructors. I started going to this gym back when it was the UFC Boxing gym and continued when Burak opened urban boxing up. I started as a boxer where I got some good training with Randolph. However, I spent the most time with the Brazilian jiu jitsu crew at Urban Boxing. The training I received under Isaac July was incredible, and the camaraderie was outstanding. This gym has a fun and intense atmosphere. I worked with Burak who was one of the most strategic teachers I've had. He breaks things down simply, meeting you at your skill level. He is very patient and makes you feel comfortable. He will push you and challenge you, never failing to make you work your hardest. Burak's encouragement is motivating and in a short time I saw more and more progress and results. Burak is personable and competent, preparing you to meet your goals. Burak has a versatile teaching style and he is very approachable. Be prepared to work your hardest at this gym and have a blast doing it. read more

While I've tried some group aerobic workouts like swimming and running before, I've always found my comfort zone and didn't push myself enough. Best part I like in Urbanboxing is coaches constantly encourage you to keep moving, develop your endurance and fitness level. For me, trying to get out of office or home on time or finding parking spot during busy weekend to show up weekend class is the most challenging. Once you show up and follow coaches' instruction, you don't regret and one hour flies. Coach Arturo's Tuesday and Thursday early morning class is great way to start a day. Not crowded in this time compared to evening or weekend classes. Coach Arturo is observant and his tips help you to think right form. Friday glow boxing coach Ricky is really fun. He teaches and workout with you. He's very passionate when he demonstrate right position, techniques and forms. You get easily motivated and want to sweat like him. Since I signed up September, I've tried not to miss most boxing 1 and all boxing weekend classes. I find coach Jeremy and Andrija's classes the most intensive ones. Jeremy always encourages you to bounce even during break or between interval workout. After workout, always feel stronger. Coach Andrija's class drives you to put serious effort during workout. Very charismatic coach and you'd rather hold when you hear his loud "don't give up" line Wanted to get out of my comfort zone, try something new and develop physical strength. So far I am very satisfied and glad I found this gym. read more

I didn't want to leave just one star because I did get a work out. I went to the 5:30pm class Boxing level 1 to try it out and I was very underwhelmed. Its basically a 30min workout and then you just stand there and hit the bag. No real combinations taught, they try to teach the philly shell defense technique, which is complicated to beginners and I had my sister with me who is a beginner. There was no structure. Just the instructer yelling out " we'll do a 1-1-2 and add 1-1-2-3 and then if there is an opponent you could do this or that." You are pretty much left on your own and its not really engaging. The lack of space is also a turn off. The bag behind me kept hitting me and there was barely any room to my left or right. Oh, and what the hell is "bombs away"? (he didn't elaborate on that either). The "coach" was Jeremy Shapiro. I am a member of an actual boxing gym on Mt. Ovilet and I was looking to change it up a bit, but it was a disappointment. read more

I could not live without Urban Boxing, and its boxing classes are always the highlight of my week. Since taking over from UFC, Urban Boxing has done a fantastic job keeping everything we loved about the old place and making it 100 times better. There are great instructors, who work us hard but keep it fun and try to help you improve every time no matter what your level is. The classes are at convenient times and include a fun range of people with different levels of experience and goals. The gym is also very responsive to its members and is always getting even better with new classes, equipment, and other improvements (towel service and free water bottles, awesome!). Let me start by saying Urban Boxing is a workout experience like no other! From the moment you walk in the door you are greeted by friendly faces and an energetic, upbeat environment. The facility is exceptionally clean. All of the staff and coaches are very knowledgable, and it is apparent they take pride in what they do. The classes are challenging and will push you mentally and physically. The experienced coaches genuinely care about your progress and are extremely helpful and motivating. The classes all give you a very good work out--at least 20 minutes of cardio in the beginning, then a half hour of boxing followed by 10 minutes of abs. Two instructors stand out: Andrija, because he is very good about teaching the proper form and technique to become a real fighter like him, and Arturo, as he is a lot of fun and can make you laugh even while you are doing pushups and sit-ups. The lunchtime classes are never as busy as the weekday so that is also a better time to try if you are unsure. read more

Awesome gym with a positive, encouraging vibe. Even as a beginner I felt supported and welcomed by everyone there (not just the instructors, but everyone). The instructors - I took most of my classes with Jason, Mike, and Arturo - are excellent and super attentive, even in a crowded class. The workout will kick your butt but you'll feel great afterwards. I went pretty consistently (3-5 times a week) last summer, and felt a huge improvement in my overall fitness level. After countless memberships at different gyms around town, I tried Urban Boxing through Classpass and immediately signed up for a membership! This place is amazing and the workouts will get you sweaty and make you hurt in all the right ways. The trainers are awesome and while they push you and yell words of encouragement, they also respect everyone's limits and sort of let you just lay there if you need to. Urban Boxing DC is by far the best gym and workout you could possibly do. I burned over 600 calories in an hour every time (I've been athletic and in decent shape my entire life). I brought a coworker of mine to a class that does cross fit every morning, and he said it was one of the best workouts he's ever done. He was soaked from head to toe in sweat - literally looked like he'd just jumped into a pool. If my law school classes didn't interfere with my schedule so much, I would be going every day. If you're traveling for work (like I do) and looking for some solid Jiu-Jitsu while in DC, hit up Urban Boxing! I come from and train in San Diego and have been fortunate enough to have visited BJJ academies in several states (Even as far as the U.K.) during my work travels, so I already have an idea of what I'm looking for in good cross training opportunities when I'm on the road. This trip...I found it at Urban Boxing. The staff was friendly when I first walked in to take a look and was consistently the same during every visit. Facility was clean and they made good use of the space they had. Dan took good care of me during my visit, thank bro. I met a lot of really cool training partners here and hope to see them all again too. And Professor Isaac July ran consistently solid Jiu-Jitsu classes the entire time. Urban Boxing is a great, no frills gym. As a woman who had never thrown a punch in her life (minus elementary school taekwondo), they made me feel extremely comfortable and gave me great instruction (without being overbearing). I'm not a particularly athletic person, but I feel more than welcome in the classes, which give you a great work out and are a good mix of ability/fitness levels, genders, and ages. The instructors know their stuff, but they're more than happy to help a newbie out. The gym also provides free water and gatorade, which you'll need! This is my first time I am posting a review on Yelp and was compelled to do so by the lovely, capable, fun and inspiring people at Urban Boxing DC. My sister and I (professional, petite, 30-40 somethings) went there on a whim after a particularly frustrating week feeling the urge to burn off some steam and get in a good sweat. We both do a variety of work outs and are not out of shape, but neither of us were at the top of our game when we came for a drop-in class. The environment was authentic and high energy, the class HARD but in a good way with cross-fit mixed in with true boxing instruction, the instructor (Justin) skilled, driving, funny and compassionate all at the same time and the reception team (Dan and colleagues) welcoming, accommodating and efficient.
