Returning to The Urban Grill was wonderful and brought back memories, especially after five years of not traveling to Branson, MO. Memories of conversations with the owners, memories of the excellent dishes and good wines. Going back felt like time stood still, but believe me, time does. We sat at the bar, and the bartender was incredibly sweet and attentive - though wow, she was busy on a Saturday evening at 6 p.m.! Her great attitude made our experience even better. The place was packed (which is why we chose the bar), but we weren't disappointed. The restaurant/bar was well maintained and decorated - with a nicer type of vibe. People were dressed in anything from jeans to dress pants, to dresses, to suits. It fit all types of attire, but could certainly be the perfect date night spot. The food looked and tasted amazing. I didn't even get a chance to take any photos! We shared the chicken and Brussels sprouts, opting for extra Brussels instead of rice, and I have to say, these were the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had. Perfectly cooked, coated in sauce, not raw or charred. We also had the French dip with sweet potato fries and some of the sauces the bartender recommended. It was fantastic, not greasy or heavy, and the bread was perfectly soft. One of our sides was the chicken tortilla soup, which was also delicious. No complaints from start to finish. We were greeted immediately by a nice young gentleman. The atmosphere was pleasant, it reminded me of a good old supper club. The music was a bit loud and not the songs usually played in a restaurant. Our waiter, Henri, was right on top of this by bringing us our beverages right away and knowing the soup of the day (surprised at how many people don't know that!). Our lunch was so scrumptious! All of the salad dressing are home made and there are veggies in the side salad other than just lettuce. I wish I could have taken the left overs with me because it was so good, but we are traveling 6 more hours. Nice place! Recommended it to my friend that just moved to Des Moines. It has been a while since I've been to The Urban Grill so I had to go. I usually get the Pecan Crusted Chicken Salad but decided to try something new so I went with the Chicken De Burgo with a side Cesar salad and mashed potatoes. The salad dressing wasn't my favorite, it had a strong lemon flavor. The garlic butter sauce on the Chicken De Burgo lacked good flavor but I enjoyed the mushrooms. The bread was tasty as well. The service was great. The server was very attentive which I appreciate. And the prices are reasonable all things considered. I was there in the evening during the week and it was busy. The tables/booths are pretty close and at times it can be pretty loud inside. Next time, I'll stick with the salad. read more

What a great ambiance! A great place for dinner and there was definitely enough to take some home for later!

It had been a while since we'd been here, so we decided to stop in after a late afternoon meeting. It was a nice summer day, and we were willing to sit inside, so seating was pretty wide open. We opted for a bar table. I think they're used to being more full, so it was a bit chilly, but we'd brought long sleeves in anticipation of that. Drinks came fast and we got in our food order, which also arrived quickly. My wife got the Chicken Brussels. Very good, maybe a bit heavy of paprika, but it's a nice mound of tender brussels and tasty chicken. She even liked the bacon, which is not one of her favorite foods. I got the Cobb Salad. A pretty good mix of greens, but a bit heavy on yellow parts, which are not my favorite. The blue cheese was VERY good, and I also enjoyed the bacon, and most of the other toppings. Tomatoes were typical for the Midwest this time of year (not all that good), but that's pretty much everywhere. Our server was very friendly and upbeat, but didn't check back on us much, and then brought the bill without asking if we wanted another drink or dessert (we didn't, but hey, he doesn't have ESP...or does he?). Wine list is good, and drink prices are reasonable. It's a long time staple for the area, and while this experience wasn't our best, we'd still try them again. read more

This is such a great place to come for lunch. It was lively and busy and the service was really fantastic. I don't live in Iowa any longer, but the service had a nice "Iowa" vibe that I enjoyed, which maybe can't be understood by everyone, but did factor in my experience and rating. The portions were very large, and this was the first time I actually have ever in my life ordered steak rare and received rare steak. Everyone is so scared of rare! It wasn't the highest quality steak, and I don't think they cut it all the way, AND it wasn't seasoned, but hey, the cook knows how to get the temperature right so I was impressed. If you are in Des Moines, I think you will like this place. Get it while it lasts! read more

Bacon wrapped filet 6 oz was chewy for being a filet. Another ordered a bowl of sausage soup and got clam chowder soup. The waiter never ordered it wrong as he admitted it and never checked it when it was served. One cocktail was ordered but the waiter never asked if we would like a second one. Loved this place. Had the ribs and they were fall off the bone tender. They even reduced the amount of sauce for me. The great part was the separate dining areas they had in the building. Made every table very cozy. Service also was great. Even brought me a wet towel with the ribs. read more

The pasta was well proportioned, I could see many people getting a second meal from it. Service was very quick, they paid good attention and were quick with refills and the bill when finished. We visited over the weekend and really enjoyed the overall experience. The setting was intimate and inviting--perfect for a relaxed night out. The pasta was a bit on the watery side for my taste, but the service more than made up for it--attentive, friendly, and perfectly timed. The mules were dangerously good (in the best way), and we ended the night with a crème brûlée that was both perfectly crisp on top and beautifully cream underneath. I came here for a family dinner on a weeknight. It was completely packed when we arrived, but only had to wait 10 minutes for a table. They have lots of nooks and booths tucked away. The lighting is very dim so it has an upscale feeling. Our server was nice and to the point. I ordered the sirloin steak and mashed potatoes, the steak was very good. I ordered an Angus Burger which was served medium with traditional toppings of tomato (not fresh), onions, pickles and a lettuce leaf The Angus Beef was a thick slice, but did not taste as highly seasoned as I like -- yet it was still good. I asked the server the type of bun -- he gave me a lack luster response of " Kaiser, I think." Low mellow music played in the background of this very quiet atmosphere while some chatted about their business of the day. The $$ prices are average for high quality meat, loads of room inside with your choice of tables high or low, booth or choice sides of where to sit in the room. There was plenty of parking. Wait service was great. Food is slightly more expensive but makes up for it in quality, flavor, and quantity. I got the black and bleu burger and was able to eat half and half of the fries and easily had enough for a second meal later. Fried calamari with king pap sauce was great. This is the best restaurant in urbandale. It's my go-to lunch spot whether it's lunch with an old friend, family visiting from out of town, etc Owner is often on site and the staff is on point. Great service and perfect preparation every time. You can't lose. The menu is rock solid top to bottom. Realistically I should change most of my other reviews to 4 stars. And the best bang for your buck in Des Moines is the sandwich-soup combo, $11. I get the roast beef on sourdough, it's huge - full sandwich. Soups are excellent. They keep it very dark inside and sometimes the fine print on the menu is hard to see. But this is definitely my favorite restaurant in urbandale so I highly recommend it. read more
