EVAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DROOOOOOL Ahem...now that I've composed myself, I can tell you of my (at least) bi-weekly (2xs a week) love of Urban Chicken's Chattanooga Fried Chicken. Let me start off by saying that I live wayyyyy closer to Popeye's and can literally smell the fast food chain's southern scents when I have my windows open, or I walk outside my door. Once I discovered Urban Chicken, though? Those scents were no longer drool-worthy. If you want chicken that doesn't taste mass produced, that also has that perfect savory crunchy skin, you want Urban Chicken's Chattanooga Fried Chicken. If you want juicy, ingeniously flavorful tender bone-in chicken, you will call them right now and you will never look back. I haven't, and I come from the (northern) land of fried chicken: Jersey City. My boyfriend and I always order about 6-10 pieces of chicken and a side of fries. Their fries are 9/10 times fresh out of the frier, and are lightly salted for that crispy, warm potato-y goodness every side of fries should possess. And they give you a LOT! We crave UC fries even with our other meals; so even when re-heated (in a toaster oven, of course) they are a delicious left-over pairing to any meal. Here are some things I'm not so crazy about: the cornbread is too crumbly; the green beans are overcooked (but that's all take-out green beans); the gravy on the mashed potatoes looks too flour-y but I'm not huge on gravy anyway; they're not open on Mondays and don't deliver until 4 pm on days they are open, WTH? If you like your buffalo wings to pack some serious flavor, the Big Buffalo Wings are your likely choice. We ordered them with Nuclear sauce. I wish I could say I loved them, because they had a beautiful crunch, but they were a tad salty. I couldn't eat more than 2 at a time without a 10 minute break because their flavor was seeped so deeply into the breading that it was overwhelming. I'll order these again but only if I'm not super hungry and am in the mood for wings and their fries. Now, back to why I get Urban Chicken about twice a week: As a staunch lover of hot sauce, this place wins over the fiery depths of my mouth. In the past year of my UC discovery, I've spent a collective of about 4 hours dipping every tiny piece of torn-off UC chicken, and every golden UC fry in their hot sauce. It's worth the .69 cents and the light bicep workout. I think I've made it abundantly clear: This is must-try, must-be-addicted-to fried chicken place. Tried urban chicken instead of gone with the wings tonight when the craving struck. Used yelps online ordering system which was easy. Food arrived in the estimated time. Nice and hot. Big juicy wings. Got the radioactive sauce which is perfect for me cause i like spicy and flavorful. Which it accomplished nicely. The $2.99 side of fries is a big portion and worth it! Unfortunately they lost a star because on my order of 20 i wanted 10 radioactive and 10 teriyaki. The online system does not allow for multiple sauce requests on a single portion. But there is a discount for quantity so im not going to order 10 and 10 and pay more. I put this request in the special requests area and it was ignored. They lost another star for the fact that they dont provide the only side that can quench the fire of a wing with zing. Ice cold celery or carrots or both. Every wing joint ive ever been to always has this and it is a tasty and healthy interlude to the deep fried disaster you craved enough to order from your couch to not interrupt whatever you are binge watching that evening. I heart wings. Traditional... breaded.. exotic... jerked... mole'd.. baked, smoked or broiled... I do not descriminate... I prefer them breaded in a spicy BBQ or smoked then grilled, but as I said.. One love when it comes to the bird... when i ordered they told me they were breaded.. but, they are not. they are "purist wings"... that is... they are traditionally prepared, fried.. no breading.. with a butter/louisiana hot sauce. The wings are plump made to order from fresh, not frozen wings... (places that use frozen wings usually serve them way underdone for me).. as the outside cooks much faster than the center... The BEST fried chicken in the area. Not only is the food amazing, but Laura and Lars make you feel like family. I usually get the 2 piece dinner or 10 piece wings with mashed potatoes. My favorite sauces are teryaki and mild. Their chicken is fried with trans-fat free oil, so that's why it doesn't stink inside, and makes things (a little bit) healthier. And amazingly, they won a Community Health award from a fair I was at in Mountainside Hospital. A fried chicken spot beat out Mesob and some other well known healthy restaurants in Montclair - go figure! Just moved in across the street and this was the first place I went to eat after a long, strenuous day. Went with a friend who knows his food and we both agreed this was a great place for fried chicken. Don't let the exterior fool you, it's welcoming and bright inside.The brother and sister who run the place are super-friendly and earnest in their efforts to serve you. It just starts with the fried chicken though, their menu is very deep, just narrowly concentrated on the one meat, as expected due to the name. We both had the chicken sandwich, which was made from Grade A white breast meat, very fresh and juicy. No overcooked clucker here. The breading made its presence known but was not overwhelming at all like some of KFC's offerings. The greens were fresh, colorful, and crunchy. Came with big steak fries, if you like them that way, more than I could eat. As for the sides, the mac and cheese was OK, kind of bland, but far from watery, nothing special. The corn bread is sticky and fun to eat as it melts in your mouth. Very moist. I plan to try the wings and other menu items in the future, but my first couple meals there have been very satisfying. I absolutely love this local chicken joint! If you want FRESH, Home-cooked fried chicken, this is the place to go. I will never go to Popeyes and KFC again after tasting Urban Chicken. Not only do they having amazing fried chicken, they cook the Best Grilled chicken...it' so juicy and full of Smokey flavors, you don't even need sauce on it. Sooo much better than KFC or Popeye's! The fried chicken is so juicy, and was still hot and crispy even after the drive home. The only negative thing I can say about this place is that it's so small and only has two tiny tables if you want to try to sit and eat. The place itself is really clean, and somehow doesn't have the overwhelming aroma of fried food. You can even see into the kitchen area and the place is immaculate. The chicken is fried fresh for your order, so it doesn't dry out sitting under heating lamps for hours. Besides the chicken, we tried the pulled pork sandwich, which tasted great. They even grilled the bread a little, giving it a perfect texture. The cornbread, as other reviewers said, is a bit sweet (with a hint of vanilla extract) and I thought it complimented the chicken well. The coleslaw tastes fresh, and unique with the pineapple chunks in there. The mac and cheese is your generic fast food type, but I thought it still tasted better than KFC's. And their 24 karat gold sauce tasted like a variation of honey mustard, mixed with what I think is some vinegar, giving it a nice sweet and sour mix. Update: tried it again after years of avoiding, but they've worked out the salt levels in the batter and it's really good, now. Sides are pretty good, too. Got it delivered and the chicken and fries were still crispy. Old review: Tried it again after trying last year. There's probably some excellent chicken under all that salt. I think it's even saltier than last time. My insides are all desiccated now. Who can tell if the chicken is well seasoned if all you taste is salt? I'm guessing most people like that level of salt (or didn't get the fried chicken) but that seems hard to believe. Then again, most reviews don't mention it (but many do so I'm not alone). They need an option for a less salty batter. Maybe they have it. If you order from them find out and if they do let me know. I'll be getting more chicken right away. The bun was a little soggy for my taste but a minute in the toaster oven and it was perfect. The cole slaw had pineapple in it... mmmm it was sooo good. My brother had the chicken dinner with fries and it was very good. I KNOW friend chicken and this was the real deal. Now my boyfriend got the chicken tenders which were almost $10 and came with absolutley nothing! They were good but they were not worth $10 at all. Finally I had the ribs with mashed potatoes and gravy. The ribs were okay not winning any barbecue ribbons anytime soon that's for sure. And the cornbread!!!!!!!! YUCK it tasted like pound cake! I believe in putting sugar in cornbread but that was just too sweet I didn't like it at all. My biggest complaint with this place is that there really isn't anyplace to sit and eat. (Sure there is a table squished into the corner near the soda fridge, and one outside, but it's not really a comfy place to eat.) There is nothing worse than being excited about getting fried chicken or wings home only to find them soggy from the trip. If you go, get the fried chicken. It's perfect - the breading, the meat, everything! The wings were just meh - the first time I ordered, the wings were cooked perfectly, but there was too much "golden" sauce on it. And the sauce tasted like it had mustard in it - yuck. The second time, I ordered the buffalo wings. They were undercooked for my taste. I wish they had more sauce options for the wings! The mac and cheese was awful (elbow macaroni with cheese whiz on it) and the cheese fries were disappointing - the same yucky cheese over frozen steak fries. I can only vouch for the chicken and the delicious "24 karat" sauce. Um YUM! My husband and I love chicken tenders, and these rate closely to our favorite chicken joint in NYC. The chicken was plump and juicy! We got $20 worth of chicken which was a tad pricey for us but filling. The 24 karat sauce is amazing! As for the hot sauce it kind of tasted like generic Frank's red hot- which isn't bad but it didn't hold up to their 24 k. My boyfriend and I ordered through delivery.com not realizing how close to closing it was. When he went to get our order (maybe 10 minutes later) he was informed that they didn't take the order from the website because they were closing for the night. They were so nice and told us how to get a refund from the website since we had already paid online. They then sent him home with chicken, wings, and mashed potatoes with profuse apologies. Ordered from this place last night for my boyfriend and I. We shared 10 chicken tenders and we each had mashed potatoes and cornbread. We loved the mashed potatoes so much. Very flavorful and no need for gravy or anything extra. We actually ordered gravy but they forgot it. No biggie because it wasn't needed. The tenders were great and very filling. The breading was good but it was a little flaky and salty. Cornbread rocked; I wish I ordered another piece. We were very happy all around with our meal. A must order is the corn bread! Nice, sweet, almost cake like texture! At .59 a pop you can't go wrong here. The main event, the fried chicken was really good. Moist, juicy, and fresh. Breading was not overwhelming and overall well seasoned, although a tad salty. Pieces were nice and big. You definitely get good portions here with the exception of the sides. I consider myself a true lover of fried chicken, not to say that anyone else isn't. This place claims to be better than the franchise such as popeyes and kfc. After giant getting a chance to try it, I'll have to say that is better than kfc but about the same level with popeyes. I love me some popeyes so this is a good thing. They're different experiences for your taste buds but both are glorious delights to be had. I'd definitely come back here for another go but my love for popeyes still hasn't been tainted. The only thing that didn't make it 5 stars, though, was that my taste buds have been spoiled by the best chicken in america. If you ever find yourself in New Orleans, you have to try out Willy Mae's Whisky House. You won't regret it. Back to this place, though. Try it out because it's some great chicken.
