My wife and I have been going to Urban Dental since we moved to San Diego in 2020. Dr. Kim and her staff are the best I've ever known. Dr. Kim has resolved dental issues that no other dentist I've seen was capable of addressing. Her skills are top-notch, and she and her staff are always caring, friendly, and effective. We both had Invisalign treatment here, and Dr. Kim made important adjustments along the way that ensured excellent results for each of us. In my case, she patiently worked through a stubborn lower tooth and suggested a permanent retainer for several of my lower teeth -- it's comfortable and very effective. After decades of struggling with jaw clenching that caused severe pain, headaches, and excessive wear on my teeth, Dr. Kim asked if I'd like to try Botox treatment for it. She clearly described what to expect, and I decided to give it a try. For over a year now, the clenching has been in complete remission. The pain relief has been life-changing, and the stress on my teeth has dropped to normal. The office itself is spotless, comfortable, and thoroughly modern. I found this place through my new insurance and based my selection of their good yelp reviews and they did not disappoint! I really appreciate how thorough Dr. Kim and her team are and always explain the procedure in detail. They have TVs with headphones at each seat and also offer blankets which hasn't been an option at other dentist's office I've been to. I went over 1.5 years without dental care so I had a lot of cavities to fill and they have made it a really smooth process and didn't make me feel bad about how long it had been. I also had an extraction done and it was super easy and pain free. Obviously with dental work you're still going to be getting a lot of noise and vibration which I find very overstimulating but this office has made it as otherwise as stress free as possible. The reception team is also very informative and lets you know what exactly you're paying for. I have been doing 8am appointments so street parking around the block is very easy to find. I had an accident NYE 2020, and damaged two front teeth and needing emergency dental services. I ended up getting a root canal and crown. The equipment that they used to create digital X-rays and images for making the crown were very modern and minimally invasive. The crown that I received matched perfectly with the rest of my teeth. The front desk, dentist, endodontist and technicians were all very friendly and explained everything very clearly. They made sure that I understood what the procedure entailed and what I was being charged for line by line including what insurance would/would not cover, and what I needed to pay. The sage words of my father, "You never leave a dentist office feeling better than when you went in." I've found that there is a range of unpleasantness that is directly tied to the competency and skill of the people who work on you. I had a root canal in my 20s from my dentist at the time, and it felt like medieval torture. Many years later, I had another root canal from a root canal specialist from China, a woman who barely spoke recognizable English but does nothing besides root canals all day, and I barely felt anything. This is why having a great dentist is important, but also a dentist that knows his or her capabilities and limitations and when to bring in help. I've found such a dentist in downtown San Diego. I've been going to Dr. Jessica Kim's office, Urban Dental, for the past 5 years. It started with the extraction of a 2nd Molar (a tooth way in the back next to the wisdom teeth), which happened so quickly I barely had time to experience much, if any, pain. After just one night of gauze and Vicodin, I was fine. Dr. Kim subsequently identified gum-related issues which could cause me additional tooth loss and put me on a cleaning program for a year which led to a little improvement but culminated in a referral to a periodontist. Public Service Announcement to Smokers: I was told by the periodontist that years of smoking cigarettes and cigars has caused serious harm to my gums. I haven't smoked in several years but the damage, as they say, is done. Another reason for you to quit! Public Service Announcement to Non-Flossers: The fact that I historically had been lazy with regards to flossing hasn't helped matters. Anyway, if not for the diagnoses, treatment, and referral by Dr. Kim and her team, I would be at much higher risk for tooth loss than I am today. Dr. Kim and her staff have also performed for me many cleanings, several re-fillings and fillings, as well as replacing a crown with one that fits and feels much better than the crown I previously had. The periodontist raved about the crown when examining me, and told me Dr. Kim did a great job with it. Perhaps just as important as the dental work, the people who work for Dr. Kim are friendly, competent, and warm -- the type of people you want around you when you're having unpleasant dental work done. Nichole, Dr. Kim's office manager, particularly has always gone above and beyond to work with me through insurance issues, accommodating scheduling preferences, and always letting me know exactly how much I will pay out-of-pocket for each visit before I go in. There are never any surprises, unlike my past experiences with dental offices. I give Dr. Kim's Urban Dental my highest recommendation. Dr Hong was great and she brought me homemade kimchi from time to time, but I have to say Dr. Kim has WIZARD level anaesthetisation skills. I have been going to dentists for I would assume to be about the last 40 years. The thought of deep cleaning and / or drills scares the hell out of me. I cringe at the thought of a slip and that drill hitting a nerve. I have been also been told that due to my "long chin" I need a little more juice to get me numb. I cringe at the anesthetic shot in the gum. My body tenses up and it is miserable. Well a few days ago I had the pleasure of Dr. Kim replacing a filling on my tooth. Not only did I not even feel the anesthetic needle, I never even flinched through the whole procedure. Dr. Kim is amazing. I could sit in those relaxation chairs all afternoon. 7 years later, Urban Dental is still my go to dentist. I can't express the trust I have in them to take care of me and everyone I refer to them. Their team is detailed and caring. Dr. Kim is compassionate, genuine, and a perfectionist - a great combination in a dentist! I have terrible jaw clenching and grinding problems (have destroyed 3 molars, 1 nightguard, debilitating regular migraines and neck spasms) and my primary health care has been a dead end for treatment (IYKYK). Okay, First of all I would like to say that Dr. Kim is extremely thorough and she has a great personality. After I read several Yelp reviews I was very excited and confident I had found a new dentist. Unfortunately that was not the case. When it came to the billing is where I started to have issues. I will try to keep this simple and to the point. When I started to question my bill their responses made no sense. I called my insurance company and confirmed that they are not allowed to charge me more than the contracted rate for any service. They were trying to charge me the difference between their rate and the contracted rate, this is not allowed per the contract they have with the insurance companies. Yes, in the end they tried to resolve this but this was their standard practice and I spoke with two people who tried to do the same thing, I also have it in writing. Once they tried to correct it at that point I no longer trusted the office so I didn't feel comfortable moving forward. Here are some tips if you are a client or thinking about becoming one. 1. I absolutely love going to this dentist. The staff is amazing, and so thoughtful. They make you feel comfortable, as much as they can. The staff brought me a nice soft and warm clean throw blanket, since I forgot my jacket. They go as far as putting vaseline on your lips, to keep them from getting chapped. I always have to get the nitrous, because I have anxiety, from my previous dental experience, at a different establishment. I highly reccomend this office! Dr. Kim is a very sweet and kind Dentist, who doesn't judge you, and gives great advice on your dental situation, without making you feel like an idiot.
