I won't comment much on the ambience. The booth was cozy. That's all I'm going to say! The food though was delicious! We started off with Kashke Bademjan which was a grilled eggplant dip. It was like an exercise for my taste buds with the crispy onions, soft eggplant, and goat cheese like taste of the kashk (Wikipedia says it's like sour cream but this was beyond sour cream) served with lavash. I ordered the chicken and ground beef/lamb kebabs. They were cooked perfectly and juicy. There was so much food! The rice was cooked perfectly and was flavourful. My only disappointment was the bakery portion of the restaurant. I bought a number of cookies and they charged by weight. A bunch of cookies cost me $9.50. The chickpea cookies were not my favorite. The texture was good but I wasn't digging the flavour. Overall, I would definitely come back. There weren't many people there, but my friend says it's a popular place for takeout. This place sounds like a modern sports bar, but its a persian restaurant in disguise, which isnt a problem since I do like persian food. I usually order the chicken joojeh kabab lunch with lavaash or rice and its very satisfying. I wish I could give this place negative stars! Not only was the food DISGUSTING, but it made my husband, myself, and our ONE YEAR OLD, all sick. I called and complained and they told me "all I can do is gift you a certificate to get 1 free meal (of the same thing i got only) " even though i paid $80 Service was barely mediocre, manager was absolute garbage, after arguing back and forth for 30 mins he agreed to refund all of what made us all sick, so we go in, AND HE SAYS HE ONLY AGREED TO REFUND THE ONE THING! It's a hit or miss for the resturaunt. Koobideh is too dry and not juicy but is semi okay on other days. They have had decent wings on wings night in the past when I've been. Servers are good and the bar atmosphere is nice for a date night, especially out on the patio. We both decided to go for the AAA NY Steak because we felt like having a meat-heavy meal (as usual). :P We both ordered it medium but it came out more like medium well. The steak itself was moist and not too tough but it was kind of bland. It definitely needed a lot more seasoning. The mashed potatoes were fine. I usually like the veggies on the side but I found these ones to be a bit too oily. The food wasn't really impressive and the prices are on the high end here. The actual interior is pretty nice though and the service wasn't bad. There's also seating outside (if you want to enjoy the nonexistent sun). read more

The overall service and standard of food is not great. I order the same pasta dish every time and more often than not I get the wrong order. The severs are not the friendliest. Sometimes I have to argue with them, as half the time I am charged for veggies and the other half I am not. After getting my meal wrong for the last time I had to ask for me meal to be compensated at which point he sever just looked at me and left, the manager finally showed up and gave me a gift card for not even the full amount of my order. That is beyond insulting and overall business practice. Now that I have used my gift card. I will NEVER purchase take out from this establishment again. Very disappointing. read more

The interior in here is nice. I've been in here twice. The first time was a couple years ago. I went in here recently and the server was really nice. The only thing was the wait was forever, and I just wanted take out. It was really busy this day though. I had to wait half an hour to get take out since the tables were all full. Another lady asked if she could sit at the bar with her party and there was a wait for that too, huh? The food was filling. I had the barg, I've had tastier though. Our visit was late night on a Thurs for a party of ten. It wasn't too busy so we were seated and seen to immediately. Our server saw to our needs with decent speed and care. The parking was convenient as there's a parade behind the restaurant which leads directly into a small grocer attached to Urban Gate. There's also some parallel street parking. Cuisine wise everything tasted very good! I split a Bellini with my partner since it was on special, and I had a traditional Persian Eggplant dip appetizer. For $11 it was actually quite large. My partner got the kebab sampler. Out of the kebabs, our favourite was the pork variation. This place has a modern lounge-like vibe with many regulars. Went here with a group of friends for lunch because we wanted persian food. Came to see it was half restaurant and half grocery store.. Odd mix but I guess it's cool. They also are a mix of white&persian food. It was a slow period at the restaurant but it still took 5 minutes to be seated... There were a million other places they could have seated us right away but we still had to wait. The food was good but the service was horrible. It took me choking on a piece of rice coughing loudly to get a refill because they sat us in a corner and couldn't see us.. Probably too busy eating in the back where all the customers could see them (first thing I noticed walking into the place). Grocery store was nice.. The restaurant has got a single server and he seemed too busy with all else going on in the restaurant to realize my food was sitting on the kitchen counter for 10 min. Once they finally came, they were cold and I returned them. The new order only came in after another 10 min. But they were done just perfectly and no arguments there. The shishlik was essentially 4 pieces of very small T-bone steak, very dry and tasted nothing like a shishlik. The lamb chops were good but the meat was still a little dry. Im from Los Angeles, home of the biggest Persian community outside of Iran. This place was a fusion of American & Persian set up. Waitresses, were a bit clueless about traditional Persian cuisine ! We ordered the eggplant dip with sour yuogart and got super sick and felt a bloat shortly thereafter, to the point that we could not eat our main courses. I urge the management to pay better attention to the freshness of their appetizers and further educate their staff whom are dressed as cocktail waitresses at a night club. Awesome food and great service! Ate here 3 times in the past 4 days. The first time I had the lamb chops, which were excellent, it was a bit on the small side if you don't want to eat a bunch of rice. The second time I had chicken wings (excellent) and the tahchin (I think that's how it's spelled). The tachin was interesting, it was the first time I've had it so I have nothing to compare it to, but it was tasty and a large portion. Lastly, I had the lamb neck. Wow was that HUGE!! It was half full with kids blocking the ways playing and snobbish people eating. We arrived and we were told that we can sit but we have to wait for at least 1 hour as they are busy in the kitchen. Even they cant offer appetizers. We reserved came after one hour and we were told that they are still busy. And we have to wait for another 1 hour. Actually we only wanted to be there because there was nothing else in the area but pizza! The restaurant was not busy but has a very awkward seating. Very uncomfortable. This used to be my favorite place to eat in Coquitlam. Their signature dish Koobideh (ground beef and lamb, mixed with onions and saffron rice) is still really tasty, but the other items on the menu I've tried were not very good at all (dry, salty and inedible). I would rate this place 3 stars for their one good dish that everyone orders. It's the service that is awful, unless you happen to go when it's not busy-you wait so long for food at lunch and dinner time, and they practically ignore you because they are so busy. read more

They have daily specials which seem to be good, the day I was there they had $14 pitchers which for Vancouver is decent. I want to begin by saying that the food was very good. However, the service i received here was some of the most aggressive and sarcastic I have ever witnessed. I came here with my family to celebrate my uncle's birthday and it was clearly peak time when we arrived.The restaurant were understaffed which can be a stressful situation for the staff on shift. Our waitress, however, seemed to decide to take this out on us. We began by ordering drinks and water. She returned with the water and then the aggression began. It started slowly; When taking our orders, she rushed us and was very annoyed and pushy, rolling her eyes if someone hesitated for a moment.We tried to order starters. She interrupted us on each one, not letting us order them until we answered her as she demanded "Starter? Starter?" to which we replied "yes, as a starter". We then also ordered the main courses. After a long wait (half an hour to 40 minutes), the waitress returned with our main courses. We asked where our starters were but she did not seem to care. She took great offense when she tried to shove the main courses down on the table and we explained that we didn't want them before the starters. Puzzling, as this was after she had insisted on making a big point of needing to know that they were specifically starters. She exasperatedly stormed off with the food. When the bar drinks that we had initially ordered finally came, they were thrust randomly in front of people at the table. One of the drinks was wrong. There was no chance the waitress, who ignored my father as she walked off, was going to help. Instead, we went to the bar and a helpful chap behind the bar assisted us and took the time to explain that they were understaffed and apologized about the delay. This was the first bit of customer service we had received all night. When the starters did come, they were great! We had the Kashkeh Bademjan and the Shalot yogurt with flatbread. Very tasty, would recommend giving them a try for something unique instead of more usual choices. The hostility resumed again when the waitress returned with the main courses and sarcastically demanded "Is this OKAY now? Are you READY for them NOW?". The main courses were excellent; distinctive and unique. We had an assortment of barg, soltani, and koobideh kabobs. Some people tried the rice with dill and fava beans which added another level of character to the food. In spite of having been sitting under a heatlamp for so long, everyone complimented their food, which shows just how tasty it was. The meat was succulent and the portions were very generous. Each kabob had it's own quality. Part way through the meal, after finishing his drink, my father asked for the wine list. The wine list never came. I would have assumed this was simply a mistake because of the rush but the crowd had died down at this point and, at the end of the meal, the waitress did return. She made a point of ignoring my dad and asking my aunt if she wanted another drink. We opted not to stay for coffee or desert at this point and my father paid the bill. It is hard to fully convey in a text description of the sequence of events, but apart from all of the above-described behaviour the waitress demonstrated aggression and annoyance throughout the night through her body language, tone, and disposition. The fact that there were delays due to short staffing is understandable. We did not actually complain about this at any point. The waitress's attitude was unacceptable I have served as a waiter for many years in the past and I know what it's like. We were undemanding, polite and, frankly, quite patient with the treatment we received. We didn't want to escalate things because we were there to celebrate my uncles birthday birthday in spite of everything. I do understand how stressful things can get when it's busy, but part of any job is to maintain professionalism. This is especially true when one works in the hospitality industry. People are able to prepare food at home or simply order take out. Part of the appeal of going out, especially to a place with a nice interior like Urban Gate, is to enjoy the ambience. Being treated impolitely as if you are a loathsome nuisance totally ruins that and is not something anyone wants to pay money for. This experience undermined what is, I must reiterate, great food. I suggest that if an individual working as a server finds the existence of customers irritating or does not have the ability to treat them in a courteous manner, that they should seek employment that does not require much interpersonal interaction. Unfortunately they not only ruin the customer's experience, but will also affect the reputation of the establishment at which they work. read more

The food here is good and so is the atmosphere. But the most interesting experience we had here was related to their management staff returning my lost wedding ring! Around a month ago we ate at Urban Gate and returned home. A few days later I realized that I have lost my ring and when we traced it back, we concluded that I have left it on the counter of the men's room at Urban gate. We went to the restaurant and asked around but no one had found anything, we left our number with the manager. Then a couple of days ago, when I lost all hope, I got a call back from the manager saying that a customer had returned my lost ring to them. We rushed there and there it was safe and sound :-). Have eaten there a couple of times, most recently lunch. Seems to be a a nice neighborhood place trying to find it's identity. Menu is 1/2 Persian & 1/2 pub fare. Could offer more selection, but I understand that is a growing area & am sure they will expand menu as neighborhood becomes more populated. Everything that we have tried has been quite good & service friendly. Most recently had the 'Urban Gate Burger', calamari, and prawn appetizer. The prawns & calamari were both fresh & home battered - cooked perfectly & very tasty. The burger was one of the best I've had in a while. Hand made patty, fried onions, and fresh bun - excellent! So I'm just visiting canada and decided I wanted persian food and my family recommended this place. Parking in the garage was a little difficult because the spaces were so close to each other and it was very busy for just a Wednesday night. We walked through a persian grocery mart first which led us to the persian restaurant (they Are attached to each other). The food was great---the service could have been better since I was without water for so long and had to remind the waitress twice ---but to be honest everything else was solid. They had American and Persian food there. American club music plays and the setting is very classy. Black booths and decorations and all. They also have a bar area too. The owner of this restaurant is so cheap! They dont even give you an onion to go with you chelo kabab!! The other day i got some meat from the deli section and they wouldnt supply me with some ice to keep my meat cold in This hot weather and they charged me $2 for a tiny bag of ice for the $50 worth of meat i bought! Horrible customer service. The owner is super rude and kicks customers out if they complain about anything and asks them to not return there anymore. I wouldnt recommend this place to anyone. I have wanted to try this restaurant for awhile, as I have tasted a lot of other Persian restaurants around town. I was disappointed from the get go. Poor service, with waitresses walking around only helping the guys at the bar with multiple beer purchases. I was there for 30 mins waiting for menu. Finally a waitress came to the table and gave me some story about how the restaurant was so busy and they had staff call in sick. They had 5 tables including mine, that's busy????? And about the staff, they had 2 waitresses and a Manager. So I let it go, I was hungry. I ordered a shirazy salad and was surprised to find that their interpretation of this was, 45% red onion, 45% cucumber and 10% tomato. Maybe the grocery store that I could see through the wall was overstocked with those 2 items. Then after that, I was served the wrong beer, and the waitress telling me that they were sorry and it was on the house, did I get the right one. I was not happy already and asked for my bill. I looked at it and I was charged for both drinks. This has to be the worst service I have ever received, unless maybe if I was a single guy looking to drink beer and tip according to how my waitress dressed and flirted. read more

This place is located very near my building and I've only just tried it recently ! I have never tried Persian food before and I was blown away! The menu is amazing with many options to satisfy anyone. It is a good mix of dishes and the Cajun pasta .... WOW. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed 6 dishes and dessert! The server was so friendly and when the appetizers didn't arrive on time, she comped one of them for the mistake! For a first time experience, I must say it was a great one. We had dinner at the restaurant today. The service was very good, friendly and fast. We ordered the koobideh and Jujeh, and it was dry, the rice was ok minus. Nothing tasted bad, just not memorable and we won't be back. It's too bad because I really wanted to like this place, I normally love Persian food. We also went to the grocery store to get pita.
