It wasn't a terrible experience but it also wasn't great. I have ALOT of hair and know it requires extra TLC even in its best condition. Now I needed my hair done BAD. I was 1 week post partum with an old month old blow out. I went in knowing I 100% needed a protein treatment and later on some detangling and a trim, but only went for the protein treatment for my curls and a wash n go. I appreciate stylist that do what's best for the health of the hair and never walk in with an ego bc who doesn't want healthy hair. I let them trick me into doing a regular moisturizing treatment which was dumb When it came to the wash and go - as sweet as the stylist was, she did not properly apply the product to my hair. Basically slapped it on and left me looking busted. I had to tell her to add water to my hair before adding the mousse/gel combo. She didn't bother smoothing or raking the product properly. She said to diffusing would be better even after I told her my hair won't dry with that....it didn't even matter bc she diffused with no curls in site. I wish I took pictures of what my head looked like leaving the salon vs my wash n gos at home or at my other salon. Almost $200 later - I found myself at home redoing my wash n go which looks perfect after having to wash my hair all over again. I loved how relatable she was and also gave me really good advice about my hair and how to take care of it. Black Salons are always Elite My hair has improved tremendously after self relaxing and I have Shanice to thank for that. I have a really sensitive scalp and I am proned to burn easily when I get relaxer touch ups. I left that salon in awe after Shanice was finished with me! Very unprofessional salon. Entire staff arrived 30 minutes after opening with 3 clients waiting outside in the cold. Once inside I was told the stylist I booked wouldn't be doing my weave. I then waited 2hrs to get the weave started. 6hrs later I left with a closure that was sliding off my head by the next day. I returned to have it fixed and the thread popped on the closure 2 days later. I paid $600 with a $360 deposit to look mid and be treated like they were doing me a favor. read more

While the stylist did come late the receptionist ensured I was comfortable and seen until the stylist arrived. Once the stylist arrived she ensured my hair got a deep-conditioned treatment and informed me that it would need to be trimmed in order for any additional growth to go forward. I knew there would be a strong possibility of that occurring. She went on to inform the style that I selected would be limited due to the current heat. I took the chance and allowed her to do her thang. She also gave me additional tips to maintain my hair. I was given a bag to place my "hair" and growth treatment. I was able to wear my hairstyle to the Lion-King later on that evening. Still following her advice of avoiding heat and being hydrated while I enjoy my silk-press. read more

Waited 20 minutes with three young children (my daughter was scheduled for an appointment) in that tiny waiting area and they weren't even halfway through with the client ahead of her. I got an Uber and left. When I was in the Uber they called to tell me they would still charge me for the full appointment -- even though they were the ones who would have been starting (I'm guessing) close to an hour after the appointment time. And yes I did come in the day before my appointment for a consultation and to set a time, so it's not like I was early or anything. Will never come here again. read more

Although I scheduled an appointment, I never had the chance to see the hair stylist here. Typically, at other salons I would get a phone call to confirm my appointment a couple of days ahead of schedule. Since I did not get that, I called the day prior to confirm. Then they told me that I have to give my credit card to confirm the appointment. I was also told that they do not charge my card unless I am a no show. My question is, what would have happened if I never called? No one told me this when I initially scheduled the appointment. I cancelled because I had to give my card right then and there and I was on the subway train with a bunch of people and it really wasn't a convenient time for me to do that right then and there. Anyway, I called back around 30 minutes later to reschedule for the same time and explained that I was not at a comfortable place at the time to give out my credit card information. I will say that I was at fault for cancelling and I should have simply stated that I will call back in a while to give my card information. The receptionist stated that she has to call me back because she doesn't want to say yes and someone else may now have that spot. I said fine. I never got that call back. They do not conduct themselves professionally for that is something that should have been stated when I was scheduling the appointment and not something that I am told as an afterthought after I personally call them to confirm my appointment. Honestly, I had a great experience. I walked in from having a pretty horrendous start to the day and was greeted by a very friendly staff. My cosmetologist's name was Kae and she was fantastic. She gently combed through my tragic coif, washed, deep conditioned, cut, and finally, braided my hair, all for around $100.00. And the icing on the cake: new clients receive a 10% discount! I FINALLY feel like I have someone that I can go to who understand how to gently take care of natural hair on a very tender scalp. I've already booked my next appointment and encourage anyone with natural hair in need of some monthly TLC to do the same. read more

I should have written this review 10 months ago when I actually went to the salon so apologies that this is a delayed review. On Oct 14, 2014 (on my birthday), I went to this salon to get my hair straightened and add some beachy waves. I stopped by the salon a few days prior to consult about what I wanted and the price (I read the other review that said they were surprised about how much they were charged and I didn't want that to happen) and also wanted to make sure they understood what I wanted. I spoke to the owner who understood the simple style I wanted and she gave me a quote and told me who would be doing my hair when I came back (I believe my stylist's name was Anna). A bit about my hair: I've been natural for 8 years, but the past two years I have stopped straightening my hair in the winter. So I'm curly/natural for 95% of the year. I usually only straighten once or twice a year max now. So straightening my hair at this time for my birthday last year was like a treat for me. The day of the appointment, I was running late and they accommodated a change in my appointment time and everything. Salon was a little slow that day so I got almost full attention. Everything seemed to go pretty well the whole time until it was time to style. Now I was really excited about coming to this salon because I'd walked past it several times as I was always in the neighborhood and I had a friend who frequented the salon and had good things to say (note: she is not natural). So when the stylist began styling, she blew my hair out (heat contact #1), then flat ironed it (heat contact #2). She then proceeded to style (remember I wanted easy beach waves and had shown numerous pictures of what I thought was a simple style). She used a rod curling iron (heat contact #3) to make the curls. As she was doing them, it didn't look like what I wanted but I assumed there was something other step to style it that I didn't know of (like finger style, etc to get what I want). After she finishes styling my whole head, I look like Shirley Temple. NOTHING like what I asked for. So I tell her, this is completely not what I wanted. Showed the pics again and she was kinda confused at how to fix it. Now I'm annoyed because I went through all the right steps to ensure this did not happen (stopped in before my appointment to ensure they could do what I wanted and brought pictures). At that point, the owner tells the stylist, oh you did her curls wrong, you were supposed to do them like this (and demonstrates for her). Mind you, the owner was sitting there the whole time as the stylist did my hair and never told the stylist she was doing it wrong. I'm like if you saw her doing it wrong the whole time, why didn't you say something before she finished my whole head! They asked me if I wanted them to do it over, and although in my gut I was hesitant (because of all the heat), I also did NOT want to go out to my birthday party looking crazy. So she re-curled my whole head (heat contact #4). It came out better, but it still wasn't what I asked for. I was annoyed by the time I left because of the whole process and now I was late for my party. The price was decent because they had some weekday deals going on, but at this point it didn't matter because I was just completely annoyed, esp since I thought I was going to a place that was a leader in hair care. Fast forward 6 weeks, when I start wearing my hair natural (curly) again. I see that where my roots/new growth was is COMPLETELY STRAIGHT AND WON'T CURL AT ALL. My hair looked crazy! I was hoping it would revert back after while, but here we are 10 months later and it hasn't. (SEE PICS ATTACHED). She burned my hair so bad from all of that heat contact that where my roots where last Oct is a perpetually straight section now. It's not like I can cut that out bc it's at the roots and middle of my hair. Catastrophe! This is the worst issue I've ever had since being natural and I'm upset it happened at what was supposed to be an upscale salon. I was actually hoping that my appt went well because I was looking for a replacement salon to go to, but clearly I am never going back here. Moral of the story is, when you feel like something is not going right, speak up. Regardless tho, I would assume that this salon is not just about styling, but about health of your hair too and it would have been nice if when the issue happened someone told me well we don't recommend we keep putting heat on your hair to fix the problem so let's think of something else to do. They totally didn't. In addition to the fact that the owner watched her do my whole head wrong and didn't say anything until it was too late. They put so much heat on my hair it was insane. No one was concerned about the natural state of my hair. This salon is in the dead center of Ft. Greene, Brooklyn so I would assume 70% of the women who go there would be natural. I came to this salon twice, the first time was to see if they accept walk ins and their prices they told me they were about to close. So I tried back on a Tuesday I called and they said they don't except walkins. So I wrote them on Instagram they said they did, they acted as if they were only able to deal with more than one client at a a time. if you accept walkins and are in this business to make money, A potential client should not have to come back twice and be told well call you, when The customer can sit and wait until their done with the one and only client that have. I'm sure she must be related to the owner because that is the only reason someone would have that beat up looking receptionist representing their establishment. The actual stylist who did my hair was nice, but the job she did really wasn't worth the price, as my hair didn't even last 2 days. My whole visit entailed my stylist explaining how letting Dominicans do your hair is very harmful. Meanwhile they are doing the same techniques the Dominicans do, but just charging $150 more. I wonder why they don't take their own "grew by me" product & fix their own hair, instead of wearing those terrible wigs & weaves. Oh & FYI, a silk press is just using the damn flat iron. I'm sad to leave this review because my stylist is so sweet but I have to. I scheduled my second visit to Ursula Stephens Salon hoping for a pro cut. I'd been cutting my hair for years and desired a professional to help relaunch me into my natural stage. They offered a consultation over the phone and a 10:30 appointment. Despite an early arrival, my first visit started quite late so I decided to arrive on time instead of early. At 10:27, I received a call from the salon asking if I'd still be coming. . I arrived at 10:32 with my stylist Kae ready to start consulting. On the first visit, I didn't quite get what I wanted but appreciated her skill and the quality of her service so I decided to try again. She gave great feedback although I hadn't received a price quote but remembered their listed prices and thought I'd be ok since I washed my hair the night before and she said she wouldn't need to wash me. In the very same breath of stating she would only be wrapping my hair, she asked me to sit back in the chair only to wash my hair. . I sat under the dryer for an hour only to have my hair blown out again. The wrap came out fairly well although she combed it out which caused it to puff out a bit. I hadn't worn contacts or glasses that day but liked what I saw for the most part. Until I got home and had a closer look. My bill was $170. Roots were not laid, ends were not clipped. She offered great recommendations for transitioning but I'm truly hurt to see my hair looks undone. In only 2 days, I'll have to redo my hair in time to look at least decent for my birthday. The salon has so much potential but a little more training may be needed. read more

It's a very small salon. The dryers are in the middle of the hallway so you have to constantly readjust your legs to let people pass. My hair was done by Andrew. I went in asking for a a weave removal, hair cut, relaxer, and color but he convinced me to keep the weave. He did a good job but I had to provide a good amount of direction. Overall, I walked away satisfied but I wasn't blown away. Also, he talked ALOT. I appreciated his effort in trying to make me comfortable but sometimes it was overwhelming. For the most part, everyone was really friendly but the co-owner/receptionist was a bit standoffish. Lastly, I noticed that some of the stylists used off the counter products like Axe and Motions which was shocking for a salon that's supposed to be "high end". I doubt it becomes my main salon but I would use it in a pinch. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because they were able to squeeze me in the same day and they allowed me to have food delivered to the salon because I was starving. I am a current client at this salon. I feel the need to write a review because there seems to always be some issue. I also reached out to the owner via Instagram and she has not gotten back to me in almost a week. My experience last week was horrible. Last Sunday, after traveling 1 hour to Brooklyn, I arrived to my scheduled and confirmed appointment to find out the stylist was not there and that she had been given the day off. There was some kind of miscommunication and they did not have my confirmation documented in the system. I had to show my call log evidencing I spoke with someone at the salon. I'm highly disappointed and expect way more from a salon of this caliber. So i traveled all the way back home with my hair not done. The two times before last weeks mishap, the stylist was sick and I had to "try" a new stylist on the spot. When I pay top dollars, I expect top service in return. I love this salon! The vibe, the people, but most importantly the cut and color. I used to trek up to Fifth Ave in Manhattan and pay three times as much but no more. I can get the same or better services in my neighborhood. For years I walked past the salon assuming they specialized only in African American hair types. But they truly can handle all hair. Pros-they can really do hair and make it look professional Cons- won't give you a quote or estimate over the phone,so when I went and got a wash/press and 3 tracks sewn in I ended up spending $300 and wasn't given price until I was done. Stylist (not Ursula) also had a MAJOR attitude problem and kept heavily suggesting services to up the price. I must say this salon is terrible the beautician who did my hair name is nita she has no knowledge of natural black hair. She wash and blow it out fine, then she oil her hands and rubbed it on my hair and start flat ironing my hair yes a flat iron that was bought from the beauty supply store. So she flat iron my its puffs up because there no oil sheen, no grease, no oils nothing I'm a true natural never have any chemicals in my hair I tell her for my hair you need some type of grease or oil sheen she said they don't have that there. By the way it was supposed to be a silk press, she finish in 30mins it puff right up she notice it did nothing and became to wrap my hair it look like she just blew it out then wrapped it with small size pin because they didn't have the big one. I'm a long time Fort Greene resident who enjoys supporting businesses of color. That said, I will NEVER give this place my business. I walked by while walking from lunch and decided to walk in. Before I could make my way all the way into the salon, the manager rudely asked what exactly she could help me with. I said I wasn't sure (because I wasn't, I was just checking out the services and price list). As I was looking, I kindly asked if she was new to the neighborhood which she was clearly offended by and nastily answered, "Six years. I've been here six years." I asked because I'd apparently been overlooking the establishment, but it was clear she was put on defense by a simple question. Deciding it were perhaps better to speak to someone else, I turned my attention to one of the stylists and said that I was thinking about doing some slight layering to the front of my hair. She stared me down and then nastily told me to "speak to the manager" who would tell me who to deal with. The manager said something snarky that I couldn't completely make out, but basically it was along the lines of "You still have to talk to me." I guess what none of them realized was that I, in fact, didn't have to speak to any of them and I would gladly wait until my next regular hair appointment for a bang trim. As an award winning journalist with a huge network, they may want to think more wisely next time about being rude AF. A small room of sour faced, nasty women with a negative vibration so thick you could cut it with a butter knife. Terrible customer service! I started going to this salon because a stylist I used to like from another salon had moved here. My first few visits went smoothly. My visit today was likely the worst salon experience I've ever had! Having reconfirmed my appointment yesterday, I arrived at the salon right on time. When I walked in, I could see that my stylist was just starting someone else. I sat down and waited for an update but nobody seem to bother. 45 minutes into my wait, they decided I should get a wash, which I never do before my trim, but I guess they wanted me to feel like things were moving along... probably because they knew they'd have me wait for another hour for the actual service I came in for. After waiting for 1 hour 45 minutes after my appointment time, and still not having received an update or an apology, I decided to leave when my stylist started servicing the 3rd person since I had arrived. I understand stylists can get backed up and even double book every now and then, but the worst part of the experience for me was the way the receptionist (who's also a stylist), handled the whole situation. When I was checking out, she still hadn't remarked on my experience so I decided to point it out to her, quite calmly. Someone with basic customer service and the slightest respect for clients would take this opportunity to make things right, by simply acknowledging the situation and offering an apology, but no, not at Ursula, where basic customer service seems to be lacking from the receptionist's skill set. Her brief and arrogant response ended with her quickly moving her attention to someone who had just walked in even though I was still standing in front of her, clearly waiting for a better explanation or God forbid, an apology... I think most of the stylists here do a really good job, but be aware that every now and then you may also be subject to the horrible customer service I and others here have experienced! read more

I thought I would support a local business but was extremely surprised when payment was requested at the end of my services and it was almost 50% more than what I was quoted earlier in the day. The services were fair, but should you get a consultation as I did and make an appointment make certain that you ask them to write the total fee as proof of price. There are certainly other places in NYC and the Fort Greene neighborhood that can do hair equally as well and for much more reasonable price. If I could rate the stylist separately I would. She deserves a 5 star rating. However, the salon itself leaves a lot to be desired. From the lack of efficiency with time, to the double booking appointments, to the misrepresentation of prices, to the lack of high end experience you would expect from a salon with a celebrity stylist as an owner. There is a water dispenser and you are offered water in a small plastic cup. Enough said! Plus the blatant disregard for transparency with pricing. The fact that the receptionist writes it down in a pad behind you and discusses it with your stylist indicates there is no set price point and they gage what to charge according to what they think you can afford. From my experience, this seems to be a customary practice at African American establishments but this is supposed to be a high end salon. Do better! read more

A lack of customer relations and customer service expertise. always an or air of secrecy and competitiveness. Called in to be quoted a price range before making an appointment. I work in the beauty industry therefore I understand the importance of a consultation but not being able to give a range over the phone or have a webpage where your potential clients can gather information is absurd at this day and age.
