Dr. Tyagi is the FIRST doctor who was able to accurately assess what was going on, and develop a comprehensive treatment plan. Part of that plan is "trigger point injections" which are effective but very painful. Dr. Tyagi's compassion during this painful procedure was more than evident. Her encouragement, patience, and kindness really helped me get through it. If you are having issues from a delivery, I would highly highly recommend seeing Dr. Tyagi.

As I've been packing to move in with my partner, I've been taking stock of my life, and of my gratitude, in particular to Dr. Abbott for both saving my life and making my life a joy to live. I was surprised to see Kay W.'s review and actually laughed when I read it because she couldn't possibly have described a person more opposite of Dr. Abbott. Although we didn't know this nine years ago, my drug metabolization is downright wacky, and I was fortunate that Dr. Abbott was conservative and precise with her prescribing. I have a physical disability for which doctors always try to prescribe muscle relaxants and narcotics, and I've been deeply lucky to have Dr. Abbott advocate for other solutions on my behalf, like physical therapy and non-narcotic pain killers. Dr. Abbott was also the first psychiatrist I encountered who didn't treat me as if I had a behavioral problem. When I first started seeing her in my early twenties, I was really stunted and benefited from her expertise as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She was able to communicate with me about my issues in a clear, insightful way, and handled my reactivity without taking it personally. In fact, each time I freaked out on her she took the opportunity to be a stable force in my life who would not give up on me even when I wanted to drive everyone away. When I was a teen, my parents were told that I would probably have to be institutionalized for life. I think that or death really would have been my fate if I hadn't been referred to Dr. Abbott. Because of Dr. Abbott's care, I finished college; I have a job I love; supportive, loving relationships; a healthy sense of self worth; and I serve on boards for two nonprofits in my community. Dr. Abbott essentially took a feral child with complex trauma and a familial lineage of mental illness, and turned out an adult with actual coping skills and beautifully managed mental health. It's funny to write a "review" of someone who has given you the chance to live a rich life, but here it is: There's no one like Dr. Abbott. Every year for Open House New York Weekend I try to go to Tom Otterness studio, and every year the tours sell out instantly. So, instead of Tom Otterness, this year for Open House New York Weekend 2010 I got to visit a poop plant. Newtown Creek is the largest of NYC's 14 wastewater treatment plants, with a capacity of a whopping 310 million gallons of poop water a day[1]. What attracted me to this sewage treatment plant is the look of it: if Frank Gehry were to design a sewage treatment plant, he would have created the Newtown Creek plant. Affectionately known as the Shit Tits by the locals, the plant has 8 gigantic steel "digester eggs". Each massive egg is clad with low reflectivity stainless steel, is 145 feet high and 80 feet in diameter, and holds 3 million gallons of sludge. Overall, they look like a gigantic space ship out of the movie Dune. During our visit[2], we had the opportunity to climb on top of the eggs, which are connected by a bridge. From the top of the egg there is a magnificent, unobstructed view of Brooklyn and the skyline of Manhattan. The plant is illuminated by a diaphanous blue light by night[3], creating a rather odd, if beautiful, effect that can be seen pretty well from the BQE. A sight that is sure to take your breath away... for many reasons. Which other sewage treatment plant has a sleek design, a visitor center, and a nature walk? This is most likely the coolest poop plant on Earth. ------------------------------------------------------------ [1] During the wastewater treatment process, organic material called sludge is removed from sewage. Much of the sludge is converted into water, carbon dioxide and methane gas. The remaining digested sludge is then dewatered to form a cake, which can be used as a fertilizer. The word 'cake" will never have the same meaning for me... [2] The visitor center is open Friday and Saturday, 12 noon to 4 pm. Groups by appointment only. I feel it necessary to write about it and tell all of you to sign up to visit if you can*. So what is NCWTP? It's a 'poop plant' - and that's how it is lovingly referred to by the staff that works there. You see - all of that stuff from your toilet makes its way to the campus where it's broken down, separated out, and converted into fertilizer, and (I think) back into clean water to be used again in your toilets. How is it broken down? Via the humongous and gorgeous stainless steel Digester Eggs on the campus. During the tour DEP staffers took us about 150 ft. to the top of the eggs where we took in the lovely views of Brooklyn and Manhattan while getting a more in-depth understanding of how the eggs work. As we stood there nearly 3 million gallons of water churned below us - and if you looked close enough you could actually see it! - kind of gross and totally amazing at the same time. What's even more amazing - the place doesn't smell. ANYWHERE on the campus! You'd think a 'poop plant' would hold some of the worst smells imaginable. Nope, not at Newtown. I'm not saying it smelled like roses...but it did not smell like poop either. I feel like our tour guide told us why but I can't remember. So I don't know how they limit the stench but I applaud them for doing so. Gosh, NYC is amazing. The way this place operates on a daily basis amazes me. I'll admit - I tend to be focused more on whether or not my train is 'running with residual delays' than wondering about where the entire city's poop goes but I'm glad I experienced the tour and got a better understanding of how the city works. Don't be scared of the poop plant, people! It's actually a really beautiful and interesting place to spend the day. *According to the website the DEP hosts tours 3x a year - Feb (Valentine's Day), April and Oct (Open House NY).
